... And we never ate it again.
Do you miss any particular foods (or products) that have long been discontinued? I can think of many, actually, but a single one often comes to mind --- five words
McDonalds Deep Fried Cherry Pie. Hmm hmm, now that was good. I liked their cold pun'kin pie, too, but that's gone, as well. |
I miss the white fudge pretzels that DLR used to carry. They came in a gold foil bag. The ones they have now are not the same.
|
I remember a sweet snack that Planters used to have out when I was a kid, little peanut butter filled peanut shaped cookies. Not like Nutter Butter. They were actually filled peanuts but the shells were made of graham cracker or something. I can't remember their name. They were so good!
|

I miss Flaky Flicks. :( |
Pioneer Chicken. Popeye's just doesn't cut it. :(

Fois Gras is on the verge of being banned - I suggest those who like it, get it while you can

But if you do try it, the only acceptable accompanying drink is an Orange Bang. |
Today was be a good day to have fois gras.

Nabisco Bacon Crackers! I miss those too!
|
I want Flakey Flix.
|
I've posted this in many a Disneyland thread, but I terribly miss the Astronaut-food-style Ham&Cheese sandwiches that used to be sold at Sunkist IPresume. Also the Carnation Ice Cream Sandwiches that were everywhere before Nestle came on the ODV scene. (Hehehe, soon afterwards, Laurie smuggled Carnation Ice Cream Sandwiches into the Park in an insulated bag ... but, alas, they were a melty mess when she attempted to reveal them triumphantly.)
|
If Susan were posting, she would say that she misses the hand-spun cotton candy that you used to get from the cart (where it was made) in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle.
I miss Ghirardelli Flicks. As I understand, the machine that made them broke in the mid eighties and they were unable to get it fixed so Ghirardelli just stopped production. Some other company bought the name and makes "Flicks" but they just aren't the same. |

I am now obsessing about Fois Gras
|
I was watching Iron Chef America last night and they did a foie gras with Kobe beef. Mmmm..
|
I miss the ability to eat endless amounts of candy.
|
Those cherry pies from McDonald's were awesome, as long as you let let the lava inside cool down a couple hundred degrees beforehand.
I'm probably the only person who remembers these but Carl's Jr. used to have something called a California Roast Beef sandwich. It was roast beef, swiss cheese, and an ortega chili on (I believe) an onion roll. They were to die for and I have emulated them many times since then. Also, I probably wouldn't eat one today but I just did some research on Libbyland TV dinners and it sure brought back a lot of memories. They were geared towards kids with names like "Safari Supper," "Sundown Supper" and "Pirate Picnic" and I remember adoring these when I was a tyke. They were only around for about five or six years in the 70s. |
Quote:
Were the Ghiradelli flicks the ones in the tube? If so I loved those. I haven't thought of those in ages! |
Chilly Gingerbread Men - they were sold around Christmas time. Like ice cream sandwiches, except the outer part was shaped like a gingerbread man and was gingerbread flavor.
|
oh yeah. drank enough Tang to float a ship around.
as far as Quisp, yeah. Ive seen the latest boxes with the character on it, but somehow, I highly doubt it would be the same. hence Ive not tried it. thanks for saving me the disappointment. |

Oooooo.... McRib....... :)
|
I've tried fois gras a few times, but it's just never been my thing. I don't hate it, I just don't love it.
Caviar, on the other hand....yum! Of course, that could be on the way out, too. |
Oooooo.... McRib.......
|

The McD's cherry pie was awesome. The McRib is....I don't know what it is, or was- total mystery meat going on there.
Safeways used to make orange juice frozen bars, made with real orange juice, not that crappy fake stuff Popsicle uses. (Same with grape). I loved those when I was a kid. |
Quote:
I miss the Denny's Deluxe. Roast beef, cheddar cheese, and tomato slices on grilled sourdough. I make a faux version on a Garlic Cheddar ThinKrisp that's to die for. Another "repast from the past" I miss are the Kentucky Fried Chicken ribs. OMG they were good. I remember picking them up on the way to the drive-in movies. My most missed Disneyland foods are actually drinks. In Adventureland, Sunkist I Presume had a Tropical Punch concoction. On Main Street you could get freshly made OJ at Sunkist's storefront, and in Fantasyland, you could stop at the Welch's stand and get a (plastic) glass of grape juice. This was a necessary part of viewing the fireworks from Captain Hook's Galley, after you ran like a maniac from the Train Station Steps where you just watched the Main Street Electrical Parade. |

I used to be able to regularly eat the best chicken lasagna I've ever had. Unfortunately it became unavailable to me in 1995 when I got divorced. Really, the only bad thing about the divorce.
Do any Portland area people know if Burgerville is still doing Tillamook cheese turkey burgers? If not then the is a slightly darker place for me. I know this one is lame but Safeway's deli counter used to sell chicken strips that I really liked but they changed them at some point and now they're as gross as all the other food in the hot case. |
Oh McRibs....mystery meat or not ...yum...but they aren't really 'gone' they keep reappearing each year for a limited engagement.

Growing up in Hilmar was hard, everything good was located elsewhere. Whenever my sister had an Honor Band concert in Modesto we would go out to icecream. it was the only way my parents could get me to go. I miss Penguin icecream. They had a sundae called Crop Duster. It was mint icecream with malt powder sprinkled on it. When we moved here there was a Penguin, but it was not the same.

What I miss, is a real, old-fashioned A&W stand. Drive up, park the car, car hop, order your Mama Burger and fresh cut onion rings and a root beer float in a real frosty mug. Man, nothing like it....drool
|
how can it be possible that I just climbed out of bed, have barely had coffee...and that sounds freakin awesome???
|
A&W Root Beer has that frosty good taste.
My "treats" as a kid were space food sticks, fiddle faddle, bugles and tang. |
I like A&W root beer, but all the restaurants in my area growing up had closed and we never ate there (there was one but it was out of the way and we had Burgerville so why bother). So all I ever knew was the canned version.
So it was quite a shock when I moved to California and had a couple conveniently located on my long drive routes (Vacaville outlet mall; Patterson on way to Disneyland) and I stopped and ordered a large root beer from the tap only to find that it is absolutely vile. Way too much vanilla in it and way too carbonated for my preferences. So sad for this root beer lover that the only wide scale "on tap" root beer is gross. Fortunately our local beer-couch-and-pizza theater has a good root beer on tap but that is only a twice-a-year destination. |
I miss this delicious maple walnut ice cream that we used to get in Nova Scotia at a walk-up ice cream stand that was next to this restaurant that I really miss (it's still there but it's a bit far to go to for dinner). Their DQ carries similar ice cream, but it's still to far to go for ice cream ;)
I also miss that dang 4-flavored candy bar. Miss E is going to bring a few home from UT but they aren't the same brand. Hopefully I can trick my brain though. |
Does Fantasia ice cream count in this thread? I miss it.
|
any items that you used to eat/love that can no longer be had in its original form counts here.
like Picnic-n-chicken 'chick-itos'. chicken rolled tacos. my first exposure to rolled tacos of anykind. looking back, they kinda sucked compared to whats commonly available now, but back then they were da bomb |
Space food stix - have a box of em at home. The new version. They come in smaller pieces than the original stix but they taste about the same.
A&W drive up. Teen burger please. When I was a kid it was my dream job to work at A&W. Lofty expectations I know. Arctic Circle fry sauce - our only other fast food in town. McDonalds cherry pie - my absolute favorite but I'm sure I've still got burn marks from eating them before they cooled down. Jack in the Box pizza pockets. Egg Roll Fantasy - it was on Saratoga/Sunnyvale road in Cupertino. They had every kind of filling - pizza, cheeseburger, gosh they were good. Hippo Kiss from the Hippo resturant in San Francisco. Doggie Diner |
We have an old fashioned A & W in the tiny town next door. The boy and I drove up there last week. We sat in the car and had frosty mugs of root beer, it was wonderful. The one in our town sucks and is a combination KFC and A &W.
|
Bugles, yes, NA, I loved those too.
Hey, can you still get Bosco chocolate syrup? I loved that. |
Quote:

Ok, now I need to go to Newport and have Arctic Circle. The last time we went I bought two bottles of fry sauce. I've tried to make my own or eat the junk from BK but it's just not the same!

Ohh, Jack in the Box fried tacos. They were gross and yet so good! I know I ate at Doggie Diner in SF, I am sure I did, but danged if I can remember anything but the huge dachshound head. |

I still eat those nasty but somehow really good tacos from Jacks'. Two for a buck, helps stave off the need for a bunch of their other crap. I haven't had a 'Monster Taco' in ages, though.
Do they still make those scrambled egg pockets? We used to buy them and then I figured to just make them at home. The kids loved them, they were easy, I could do it. :D |

shipping and handling $12.00 I'm nostalgic, but not that curious! Nobody apparently sells in N. California. I guess I will stick with Trader Joe's Midnight Moo when the mood strikes. |
I liked the cherry pies, but even better was the Lemon Creme Pies from Jack in the Crack. Especially good at 2 am after a night of partying.

With all the A & W talk the boy and I got in the car and headed to Sweet Home. I decided on good old chilli cheese fries instead of the burger or coney dog but boy was the frosty mug delicious! Zach didn't want to go in and order by phone from the table, I love that, so we stayed in the car. He thinks it's great that the tray goes on the window and they come pick it up when you're done.
After that we went to the local thrift store and he bought 19 books, I got 2 cookbooks, all for the low, low price of $5.40. I think we need to stop there more often for that price. Especially with Zachs voracious appetite for books. |

Fun Thread! :snap:
Hmm..things that I miss? iSm mentioned Sunkist. I miss Sunkist! My first job was working at Disneyland, and I worked at Coke Corner & The Cone Shoppe. Sunkist was right next door, with their bitchin' orange and white striped costumes. *Those Sunkist lemon & orange citrus swirly sorbet dealies. *Cherry Turnovers that we used to sell at Coke Corner *Peanut Butter Boppers. They were these little logs of peanut butter rolled in rice krispies that were made for brown bag lunches in grade school. *Ripple wine (I'm totally kidding :D ) Bugles totally remind me of waterskiing at the lake when I was a teenager.Oh golly, do they still make Zima? Remember how hip Zima was back in the day? Ooh! Or remember clear Pepsi? ( or as Homer would say, "mmmm ..invisible cola"). :D |
I can't think of too many packaged products or specific menu items I miss. Mostly restaurants that have closed down that I used to go to regularly.
|
Yes, they make Zima though I'm not sure who is drinking it. Even the drunkards in my dorm wouldn't touch the stuff.
|
Quote:
|
Heehee..Zima just reminds me so much of the early 90's. Yuppies with patterned shoulder-padded blazers lookin' all bougie. That's so totally Zima to me.
I thought the original clear Pepsi was yummy! Didn't they then change the formula or taste shortly before it disappeared?? Also, I keep thinking of that SNL commercial for Pepsi clear gravy. Does anybody remember that?? YUCK!! I had a flashback to Lawry's beef jerkey. It came in a can, each piece of jerkey wrapped in clear plastic. It was just...so dog treat. And as kids, we loved it. :) |
Did anyone actually drink Zima? I remember people showing up at parties with wine coolers. Mind you, I guzzled a lot of bad wine in college, but with the only wine cooler I ever tried I had to put out a cigarette in it to make it palatable.
|
If PBR somehow became trendy I have no doubt that Zima could have been. But it was excessively mocked in my college dorm, and these people were practically drinking cough syrup on the weekends if money got tight.
|
I had a zima once. it didnt taste like anything...at all. nothing whatsoever remarkable about it.
water actually has more character |
I, too, tried Zima once in my early twenties. I rarely, if ever, drank in my twenties, so I thought Zima was way tasty and novel. Haha!
Strangler Lewis!! Bad wine!! Heehee! I tried Thunderbird once (I HAD to after hearing how low dollar it was) and thought I would luge my lungs out. I couldn't even drink more then two sips of what was in my styrofoam cup (yes, foam cup. I'm way swank & bougie like that :p ). Did you ever try MD 20/20 (Mad Dog)? Ooh! How's about Cisco? I hear people go wonky off that stuff. I never had the pleasure of trying either. Or Night Train. I did, however, once heave after a night of enjoying martinis topped off by Franzia. Yep, BOX WINE. :D Now I'm totally derailing & laughing over cheap hobo wines. :D |
Susan calls the boxed wines "Velveeta Wines"
|
I've had Thunderbird. Never had the Mad Dog. Never heard of Cisco. However, for cheap drinks (drunks?), nothing in my experience compared to Bertola's, which is/was on the Oakland Berkeley border. In the early '80s, it was .50/.75/1.00 for a single/double/triple out of the well. Cheap even for the standards of the day. Lively place, too, as I dimly recall.
For in room dining, my classy punch of choice was a sangria made with cheap wine that I would liberally season with Canadian Club. |

capris...yup. still around. one of the folks I used to go out to the curb to smoke with is still smoking them.

Pall Mall no filters? Those were nasty.

But I can't remember what they were called! For some reason Orbit gum keeps coming to mind, so it must have been a similar name. Anyway, when people would come to bum them off me, and I said what they were, I always enjoyed the hand-retraction action, and the look of revulsion on their faces!
