Koop at the El Rey August 15

Just checking out the new El Rey Theater website and I noticed this:

Quote:

Aug 15. | bossa:nova & 89.9FM KCRW Presents: Koop (live band performance)

Doors @ 8pm | $24.50
Magnus Zingmark and Oscar Simonsson are responsible for the groundbreaking music that appears under the name Koop. Inspired mainly by jazz musicians, but also learning from the work of hip-hop and dance artists, they formed the group in the midst of the fertile Swedish jazz scene. In 1997, Sons of Koop inaugurated a new sound for Swedish jazz and gained the recognition of fellow European jazz/electronica fusion figures Jazzanova and Kruder & Dorfmeister. – allmusic.com

Sounds interesting. Although just like in the Monroe thread, I must admit my first thought was why would this guy play the El Rey?

Not Afraid 07-16-2007 06:27 PM

Did you buy tickets? (I'd ask him directly, but he's sleeping.)

innerSpaceman 07-16-2007 06:58 PM

Are tix on sale already? Mr. "Some" would kill me if we didn't go to this.

€uroMeinke 07-16-2007 07:23 PM

Yes - I just bought two

innerSpaceman 07-18-2007 11:53 AM

zapppop and I are in!

Um, who's getting there early to snag good spots? I can't get there till after work (6:30 or so).

I have zero idea how zapppop is getting there on a Wednesday night, but he says he'll find a way. He's been waiting for this show for years!

C. Everett Koop! Kooop koooop-y-doooooooooooop!

Hahah that was my first thought too. I have never heard of the "real" Koop.

€uroMeinke 07-18-2007 09:22 PM

The Theater is tiny, so most spots are good, but prepare for a lot of standing

Not Afraid 07-18-2007 09:24 PM

Yes, there is NO sitting allowed.

Anyone opening for them?

Isaac 07-20-2007 09:38 PM

Yay!

€uroMeinke 08-15-2007 11:58 PM

Now that was a swanking - transported in the red velvet folds of the El Rey Theater to a space-age speakeasy. Tastes of swing, bossa nova, and contemporary sophistication still cling to my pallet. I love it when a well produced band can sound even better live.

Not Afraid 08-16-2007 12:10 AM

Sultry, hot, sexy - and that was just the singer. What a great band to see live!

nice "whore train" avatar, iZappy ;)

€uroMeinke 08-16-2007 07:32 AM

Heh - Zap beat me to it, but I think his pics are better than mine. But I did get a pic from "the ballad"

innerSpaceman 08-16-2007 08:09 AM

I don't know what's more amazing: zapppop getting his pictures up within an hour of the show .... or SuPeR K! zoning in to the whore train avatar within an hour of that.

zapppop: if that skirt were any higher, it would be her belt.

Not Afraid 08-16-2007 10:39 AM

I was sort of feel sorry for ISM and all of the girlie exposure he was treated to. ;)

zapppop: if that skirt were any higher, it would be her belt.
Lisa: At least she's got the legs to pull it off.
Zapppop: No, that's her boyfriend's job.

There are some great pictures of Helgavondingleberry.

I think what I dug most about experiencing Koop Live was that the music hearkens back to the 30's and 40's ... in my mind the last era when music was primarily experienced live.

From the dawn of human history to the 1920's, you had to be in the presence of musicians and singers to experience music. From the 20's through the 40's, more and more people experienced music via radio, but it was still live performances they were hearing.

Since then, I daresay the vast majority of human music experience is via recorded sound.

So it was supremely swell to dig the Koop sound and vibe LIVE ... it just seemed so right.

It was nice to have Magnus and Oscar up there on keyboards and laptop, but Hilga, the chanteuse, really made the night something special. I loved her. Classy and vampy.

Not Afraid: She was like a cross between Marilyn Monroe and Courtney Love.

€uroMeinke 08-16-2007 07:01 PM

That would be Hilde Louise Asbjørnsen

innerSpaceman 08-16-2007 07:21 PM

Ah, I thought he said "Hilda," but I over-norwegicized it as "Hilga" ... or perhaps that was over Bavarianizing it.

Anyway, it was odd he finally introduced her when she was off-stage.

innerSpaceman 08-16-2007 07:44 PM

Those are swell, zapppop!

I love the xylophone solo on Summer Sun ... look's like he's magic vibrophoning on air!

Not Afraid 08-16-2007 07:55 PM

The vibe player was incredible - so was their drummer. I'll miss him and I don't even know him.
