Bacon Not Included

Last night we made Elvis Presley's favorite before dinner snack, fried peanut butter, jelly, banana and bacon sammiches. And it was good. Real good. Though I cheated some and used soy bacon. That was a mistake. If you're going to go for the gold (or Fool's Gold, as it were) then for heaven's sake do not skimp on the crispy fried latch-key to the whole culinary experience. But for me it was less a calorie thing then a I-just-don't-want-to-fry-bacon-thing.

But I am not the only one who feels this way ...

... the Reese's brand ... is coming out with a peanut butter and banana creme cup, starring Elvis Presley. Yes, they'll be using the songs and images of the king of rock and roll to sell candy ...

But no bacon. To read about the new Reese's Elvis Candy, with photo, click here

If you don't want the fry mess, try the precooked stuff. It crisps up quick & clean in the toaster oven or microwave. While not quite the total fried effect, it is way better than the soy.

Ghoulish Delight 07-18-2007 12:34 PM

We sampled a similar concoction (deep fried banana, honey, peanutbutter sandwich) at the OC Fair. It had a lot going for it. I particularly liked the honey aspect, added an interesting layer to the flavor medley.

Stan4dSteph 07-18-2007 01:40 PM

I've done PB, banana and honey sandwiches in a pan at home, not deep fried. That's my favorite sandwich to order at Peanut Butter & Co. in NYC. The bacon is optional.

Snowflake 07-18-2007 01:46 PM

Reese's Peanut Butter cups, hold the bacon, hold the bananas and bread.
I tasted the Elvis version, it did not appeal, too greasy and messy for me.

I like my bacon as the star on it's own or in a BLAT

Prudence 07-18-2007 01:50 PM

I put peanut butter on my BLT sandwiches. Does that count?

Ponine 07-18-2007 02:50 PM

I had a Hamburger at Bowl Weevil that was PB and bacon.... but no banana.

And walgreens has the LARGE PB cups. They were/are a point of sale item at the register.

Cadaverous Pallor 07-18-2007 03:20 PM

I didn't know the Elvis version had bacon in it.

He used to keep bowl of bacon on his piano (according to legend at least).

He also kept an extra slice of bacon in his wallet.

Which was lovingly wrapped around a quaalude, I have no doubt!

€uroMeinke 07-18-2007 08:58 PM

Hmmm - Bacon and Peanut Butter, before I try it, does anyone know if there's a 12-step program for that?

Ghoulish Delight 07-18-2007 09:11 PM

Step 1: Open package of bacon
Step 2: Cook bacon
Step 3: Drain bacon (optional: save drippings for German potato salad)
Step 4: Open peanut butter
Step 5: Stop eating peanut butter with your finger
Step 6: spread even layer of peanut butter onto bread
Step 7: apply even layer of bacon
Step 8: apply even layer of bacon
Step 9: apply even layer of bacon
Step 10: Marvel
Step 11: eat
Step 12: repeat.

That'd be Step Blue Suede Shoes

I love peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Mom was a huge Elvis fan (in spirit, not in size) and indoctrinated me into these tasty treats at a young age. Apparently, she wasn't aware of the bacon part, and that is probably for the best. I'm thinking I might have expired by now had each of those sandwiches also contained a few slices of heavenly bacon.

And yet, my curiosity is peaking and I'm this close to picking up all the ingredients to give it a whirl.

Morrigoon 07-18-2007 10:29 PM

I used to put peanut butter cookie dough and sliced banana in the snackmaster with white bread.

Mmmmm... hot banana and undercooked cookie dough.

I tried this once, but it was real hard to get out of the blender.

:D

I ate peanut butter & banana sandwiches as a kid. Grossed out my mom.

What? It's good. I haven't eaten them in years but I sure loved 'em as a kid.

Stan4dSteph 07-19-2007 10:30 AM

I just bought some "Monkey Boy" peanut butter that has the banana already added. It's from a local company called Saratoga Peanut Butter Co.

Not Afraid 07-19-2007 10:53 AM

My Dad used to make peanut butter, banana and potato chip sandwiches.

Ponine 07-19-2007 11:40 AM

I cannot fathom why you would need the potato chips once you had the bacon.
Was the bread toasted?

AllyOops! 07-19-2007 03:58 PM

Holy cow, if I'm going to put my heart at risk, I'm going to skip the sandwich and do massive amounts of pills. It's just less clean-up & still has a touch of Elvis to it, God rest his Soul.

Okay, I totally kid. :D

My stepdad used to eat peanut butter & banana sandwiches when I was little. I remember trying it and definitely not liking it.

I'm pretty boring. PB straight out of the jar is my dealie. Although I once dipped my spoonful into plain ol' Kellogg's cornflakes and the result was pretty tasty. :)

Not Afraid 07-19-2007 04:08 PM

I like peanut butter and pickle sandwiches too. PB&J, not so much.

JWBear 07-19-2007 05:04 PM

PB on Saltines…. Them’s good eatin!

€uroMeinke 07-19-2007 05:23 PM

I'm craving peanut butter now

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 07-19-2007 06:10 PM

How about Peanutbutter and Honey on Hawiian Sweetbread?
That is super yummy!

Come on over! I have organic natural crunchy, dark chocolate, cinnamon raisin and banana raisin in the fridge. You can take your pick. :)

lashbear 07-19-2007 07:38 PM

I always thought the "Elvis Death Sandwich" was just a Peanut Butter and Banana sandwich, fried in a pan with Bacon Dripping/Grease/Fat (whichever you call it), but not the actual rashers.

Yummy - also Saltines with just plain butter.

I used to mix sugar into my peanut butter and then eat it. Works best with chunky.

   Isn't there enough already? (or maybe aussie PB's sweeter?)

€uroMeinke 07-20-2007 06:40 PM

I prefer Jiff - the sugar's already mixed in

Could this be the key to Eau du Bacon?

Morrigoon 07-23-2007 01:49 PM

Hey, that same page had instructions on making Strombolis! (Which could be made with bacon...)
