I wasn’t able to find out the details of this, but…. WOW!

More pictures here.

OMG!!

I love old classic cars, that is incredible! I hope they can follow up as cars are ID'd and cleaned up.

Great find JW! :snap:

DreadPirateRoberts 07-20-2007 12:50 PM

wow

here's more of the story

BarTopDancer 07-20-2007 12:59 PM

wow.

Kevy Baby 07-20-2007 01:00 PM

If this is not a hoax, it is an INCREDIBLE find.

Apparently, this was first discovered (or at least talked about) in February.

And it is apparently not a hoax.

Thanks for the links Kevy. My question is, in reading the comments, what the heck does "fap fap fap" mean?

innerSpaceman 07-20-2007 01:23 PM

Ok, the LoT Commune search now proceeds to old estates in Portugal.

Thanks DPR (and Kevy). I thought the story was a little too good to be true.

But, it's still and incredible collection. Too bad the owner has just left them to deteriorate.

Capt Jack 07-20-2007 02:45 PM

agreed. at the very least they werent outdoors.

a lot of those cars Ive never even heard of the company, let alone the car itself. wouldnt mind window shopping in there for awhile.

I don't think the new/current owner is leaving them to deteriorate - at least that is how I read the article.

Then there is shik-shik (or shikking), which leads one to beef drapes, velvet wallet, and a whole bunch of other things I didn't want to know.

It sounds like the original collector is still alive. The stash was not found by a new owner who didn't know what was in the barn.

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY

Manuel Menezes Morais shot the photos, but he was sworn to secrecy about the cars' location and the owner's name. However, he was able to obtain permission from the elusive owner to give me the following information:

The owner of the cars was a car dealer in the 1970s and 1980s, and decided to save the more interesting cars that came through his doors. When the barn was full, he padlocked and "soldered" the doors shut. (Perhaps welding was too permanent.)

Web sites varied on the number of cars: 58, 100, and 180 were speculated. According to Morais, there are 180 cars in the barn.

And, aw shucks, none of the cars is for sale.

Clara was able to determine that the cars are located somewhere in the area of Sintra, near Lisbon.

I asked Morais if he could ask the owner if he had a favorite car. "He has lots of good cars in very good condition," he says, "but he loves the Lancia Aurelia B24. He has two."

I'll take one or two of those........

Babette 07-21-2007 12:54 PM

I remember linking Nirvanaman to these photos months ago but never heard any more about it. How cool would it have been to open that barn. It sounds like some legend has been added to the real story, but the barn does exist.
