Moulin Rouge - August 27 - Free Viewing Under the Stars at OC Performing Arts
The Concert Hall and Community Plaza next to Orange County Performing Arts Center and South Coast Repertory are finally complete. To celebrate, they are having a FREE summer series with movies under the stars and dance parties. It was proposed by some LoTers that we make an August Swanking of:

It's a Monday night, but totally local for us....we're in, because we CAN CAN CAN! :D
|
Monday is Funday. I'll be there!
It may be a school night ... but The Show Must Go On! |
Awwwwww man I would love to do this but I have a trial starting that day. Bloody poo. Mebbe I can get it settled before then. Though I am not sure how I can use seeing Moulin Rouge as leverage ;)

I went to West Side Story event here last week (Xanadu and roller disco party is tonight). It was fun and everyone clapped after each music number. The venue may not seem quite as swanky as the cemetery, but still nice, and in the OC for FREE. You can bring any sized chairs, blankets, air mattresses, etc. to sit/lie on. Up front they put down a felt dance-floor type matrial, and in the back they have a dozen or so tables with 4 chairs each. We arrived about 6:30 and plenty of room was available for our chairs.
Picnic is the way to go. The Patina snack bar is so-so: candy, cookies, popcorn, sandwiches (reported to be yuck). There is also a bar in the new concert hall. It is open for cocktails and you can see the movie through the big windows. Many people put down chairs to reserve a spot and returned with food from nearby restaurants (Jerry's Deli, Corner Bakery, pizza, etc.) We partook in wine and other adult beverages we brought ourselves with no problems. They show the movie on the side of Seagerstrom Hall in the brick courtyard (no grass) next to the new Concert Hall, the screen is not huge. One nice thing about the bricks was it stayed warmer when the sun went down and there was not a lot of dew like the cemetery. There were cartoon shorts at 8:00 and the feature began at 8:30. Music before the movie was fitting to the era of the movie (50s-60s). Who knows, maybe they will play 90s-00 stuff for Moulin Rouge. We parked in the Seagerstrom Hall garage. It advertised something like $1.50 every 20 minutes, but the gates were up by the time the movie was over and we left for free. If they wise up and start charging like they do for performing arts events, just park at South Coast Plaza near Sears and walk over. |
I'd really like to do this, but it would be a time-squeeze for me to make it. I'd like to take zapppop, but that would add even more travel time to an already tight schedule.
Ugh, I have the Gogol Bordello concert the very next night. I loves me some fun ... but the specter of starting off the workweek with two late-night funfests is daunting. Hmmmmm. Lemme ask zapp if he's interested. Edited to add: If Ghoulish Delight and Cadaverous Pallor are still in, that's a big motivator for me. I haven't seen them in like 2 weeks, and I'm Jonesing. Not to mention that it's been hours and hours since I last saw Babette! |
Seeing as this is 5 minutes from work, I don't have much excuse to miss it.
|
Bump
Quick head count - who will be there tomorrow? (so I know how much space to hold) |
I'm a maybe. Can't do better than that right now. Me and Not Afraid and €uroMeinke and Eliza Hodgins 1812 are seeing Gogol Bordello in Hollywood Tuesday night. Starting the school week with two nights out is a little iffy.
I'm leaning toward Moulin Rouge only if it turns out that an equal number of Swankers are attending. ;) in other words, if Ghoulish Delight and Cadaverous Pallor and Babette are all going, i'm likely to be a "Yes." But I simply can't commit till tomorrow. |
Oui.
|
I would like to go (though it will be solo - Susan is out house sitting in beautiful downtown Yucaipa), but will not know for sure until Monday late. I'll try to give you a call when I know.
The chances are good because I too work very close to the screening. |
I think I will get there around 6-6:30. They do not "close the gates" so getting there late is not a problem. Come on Kevy & iSm, it'll be fun!
|
I'm in :)
|
I get off work at 5. I'll probably make a Trader Joe's run and meet you there at around that same time. CP should be able to make it down from work around then too.
|
I get off at 6 and have to run home to walk Barnum first, so I'll probably be there a little before the cartoons.

Though promises of booby flash work quite well as well. |

Jesus Christ! |
Actually, my status has become questionable. I have not slept well the past two nights and I an not sure that my body is up for anything other than crashing at an unreasonably early hour this evening.
I'll see how I feel later today. |
Sorry folks, I won't be able to make it. It's a dreadfully long and trafficky drive to Costa Mesa from Century City in rush hour.
Have fun! |
On my way!
|
I hope those who went enjoyed themselves. I wanted to go but I didn't leave work until close to 7:30 and was dead tired.
|
Wheeeee!
Good times. |
Twas good. I forgot how good that film was. Baz Luhrmann's a freaking genius, I don't know how he manages to make things so bizarre and yet WORK. Pity this was the last of the season, I would've loved to continue attending.
Next year, I guess. Speaking of which, has anyone checked out the upcoming season for that center? Looks like a really good one! |
![]() *swoon* I love that movie so much. Fun evening :snap: |
That was so cool how Ewen and Nicole came out and spoke to the crowd before the movie. Oh wait, it was just some adorable bald guy who works for OCPAC.
I have not seen MR since it first came out on DVD, and never saw in the theater. I loved it! Good times, god times. |
It's funny, as much as I love the movie, I found myself wishing this time through that there was more original music. I totally get and appreciate the effect he was going for with the whole popular song thing, but for some reason watching it last night I felt it would have been even better if it had produced some new music that matched the artistic caliber that the look of the film had.

When I saw the big "L'Amour" sign on his building in the movie, I knew I'd seen it before somewhere, and then it hit me: http://www.e-reinhardts.com/archives/stage/closeup.jpg
That's a scene from Baz Luhrmann's production of La Boheme! So that begs the question: is that sign a real fixture? |
