New word of the day (and other delightful linguistic discoveries)

I was reading an article a little bit ago and came across this gem of a word, which I intend to sock away for future use: sangfroid

In context:
Quote:

Cool, calm, and collected, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke is driving Wall Street batty. When traders scream about a recessionary "credit crunch," the former professor acknowledges their concerns but predicts continued economic growth. When they plead for easier money, Bernanke and his fellow rate-setters firmly hold the line. "Scandalous," sputtered one North Carolina market strategist. Jim Cramer, the TV stockpicker, nearly melted in a pool of his own sweat on a recent program, saying Bernanke must flood the system with money to stop financial Armageddon. Shouted Cramer: "He has no idea how bad it is out there!"

The Street may be dismayed by Bernanke's sangfroid, but it shouldn't be surprised. This is exactly the kind of policy that Bernanke has spent his entire career arguing for.
What a delightful way to say cold-blooded or cool-headed. :snap:

Morrigoon 08-17-2007 01:19 PM

It's not my stomach that makes that sound....

Oooh, I just love twatwaffle!

lizziebith 08-17-2007 01:28 PM

A favorite: jejune -- lacking significance; dull.

I think we can improve on this and have shamabolical - the wicked desire to make things a shambles and Shagabolical - a systematic plot to seduce someone

Not Afraid 09-26-2007 08:02 PM

What about Shamabolicious?

I think I brought that one in from the library_mofo lj group, which in turn got it from somewhere Survivor related, I think.

My new favorite word is
Schadenfreude: pleasure taken from someone else's misfortune.

CoasterMatt 09-26-2007 10:06 PM

Avenue Q has a great song for you, frodo :D

lugubrious

that's my word of the day, I just read it in a movie review! :)

it is an adjective that means: mournful, dismal, or gloomy, esp. in an affected, exaggerated, or unrelieved manner: lugubrious songs of lost love.

I thought it had something do do with lubrication, but alas... it's still a cool word tho!!!

Just FYI something funny about LoT - I tried doing a search for this thread under "word of the day" and it said "of" "the" and "day" were too common and/or short to do a search for. So it just gave me every thread with the word "word" in it.. grrrr :P

That'll teach you to memorize the word linguistic ;)

Urban Dictionary

A friend sent me this and I though it was too funny not to post

Upon hearing about our latest receptionist issue at work (the one thing we can count on in my office), my husband coined a great new term that I will now integrate into my daily parlance.

"Drama Leave"

I have submitted the term to Urban Dictionary under the name of ***** as follows---

Drama Leave:

Time off work to address---or more likely revel in---the train wreck of your life. You're not sick, it's not a vacation, and it's not really an emergency except in your own head.

Example:

"I heard the receptionist arguing with someone on her cell last night, and she's a no show, no call today. I guess she's taking drama leave."

Strangler Lewis 07-01-2008 10:21 AM

You people with your fancy words. You must all think you're the Pope's mustard maker.

Cadaverous Pallor 07-01-2008 03:56 PM

Bwahaha!

Did I mention I took a sick day today? Synchronicity indeed.
