We're hosting a small get together tonight. Should be fun. I'll be watching. I'm gonna skip Joan and daughter, though. Bleh. :D

According to the Gay O Meter! I'm only 16% gay. That's not enough that I feel the need to watch the Oscars.

So it's early to bed for me.

As for predictions, I'll say the political one (hotel rwanda) wins best picture.

Yeah, we'll be watching and probably playing some trivial pursuit during the commercial breaks, which I assume will be plentiful.

I would like to see "Finding Neverland" win BP but there is definitely some competition this year. I'm hoping it will be a good show.

I just want Leo to win for best actor :D

I'll be checking in online, and then watching the delayed coverage tonight (until I get tired or bored or both). Looking forward to checking out the red carpet action!:)

We're watching it projected on a movie screen, literally next to The Spruce Goose. :) Very cool......

Definitely on my to-do list, but no big to-do. :) Just hanging at home in pjs. No predicitons, as I'm terrible at that. I just want to see Johnny dressed up. :D

I'm not big on the predictions either this year. Although I'd love to see Morgan Freeman finally win.

It's funny, they have the pre-pre-pre shows on now. It's funny. Just a bunch of models standing around with their predictions. :D

My predictions: there will be a lot of really well known people in really expensive outfits being oogled by half the country. Followed by various parties around Hollywood.

I don't really care who is going to win, because it won't be anyone I know personally this year.

Morgan Freeman just won. I am one happy, happy cricket.

So it might only be me, but I really didn't care about most of what she had to say...

However, the Oscars are actually quite good this year. Chris Rock elicited a number of laughs from me, so I figure that's a good sign.. Hehehe.. :) Plus Morgan Freeman won. That's always a good thing.

OK -- anyone else think that it's really weird what they're doing with the non-acting awards? For art direction, they had them lined up on stage.. For make-up, the acceptances were done in the aisle....

I hate the "go to them in the audience" awards. Bleh. They should have them all on stage like the art direction noms if they don't want to wait for them to walk to the stage.

I noticed the empty seats - at the end of the "Accidentally in love" song. Everyone went to the bathroom. That song was absolutely pathetic. A nod for THAT??

I only was interested in seeing two things: the opening monologue and Morgan Freeman's win. Typical of me I got the time wrong and went out to eat at the Sushi restaurant next door to my building! About half way through my meal the waittress made a comment about the oscars and I said, "Oh oh!"

Ahhhhhh, Idon'tcare. My friend said that the monologue wasn't all that good. On the other hand, my dinner was pretty tasty, so that's OK. (Philadelphia roll -- so good!!)

I'll watch the hi-lights later.

I have to say I have no problem with having the noms on stage, and giving an award in the aisle. It gives the winners more time to talk. Did you know that the time they are allotted doesn't start when they get to the mike - it starts when the winner is announced? I'm sure they're happy they don't have to run down the aisle so they have time to thank their deceased mother.

There were some great speeches. I can't believe they tried to play off the second producer from Million Dollar Baby! WTF? The show is over, give him an extra 2 minutes for God's sake! :rolleyes:

Josh Groban is cute. I had no idea who he was. Voice was a bit much.

I loved all the "mermaid dresses", GC. So ultra Hollywood swank! :snap: I'd die if I owned something that glamorous.

Dang, I was sure Scorcese would take home a statue. That was mostly all I cared about. (Oh well, Kubrick never won either.)

But, butt crack. Didi you are about that?

Not a bad show. Not spectacular, but I was entertained. I'm really happy that Eternal Sunshine got something. That's two years in a row where they did right with the screenplay category (Lost in Translation).

Early in the show, while we were listening to one of the songs from the suck-fest that was the song category, CP mentioned that, of course, nothing from Ray could be nominated since they weren't original songs for the movie. So when I saw Ray nominated for Sound Mixing, I said, "They're going to give it to Ray since they can't give it for the music." Sure enough...

I like Chris Rock a lot, especially in his HBO concerts, but I get a feeling this will probably be his only outing at the Oscars. The folks in the theater just weren't laughing much. (And I guess he really ticked off Sean Penn. I wish Jude Law had been there to say, "Hey, take it easy, Sean. Chris was just joking, sheesh.")

Also, the endless bit with Chris Rock reading Catherine Zeta Jones' lines was godawful.

I wasn't very impressed with any of the musical numbers. It was like they threw Carlos Santana up there at the last moment for some legitimacy. Actually, I take that back. I always enjoy Yo Yo Ma.

I was rooting for Don Cheatle (sp?). I've loved him in everything I've seen him in. Likewise with Johnny Depp. I think I'm happy for Jamie Foxx but I haven't seen "Ray" yet.

I wanted to see "Finding Neverland" get something, just because I really adored it. I was glad to see that "The Aviator" didn't take much though. It wa a cool movie but not spectacular, IMO. Well, except for Cate Blanchet, who was wonderful and deserved the Best Supporting Actress award.

All in all, pretty boring but it had some nice moments.

I was also rooting for Johnny (I said "just give it to him for the accent!") but I was very happy for Foxx. He must have really deserved it. It is tough for a less-than-heavyweight to win in that category. Makes me want to see "Ray".

It got 4 Oscars. I think that counts as a lot. After the first hour I was sure it had the Best Pic wrapped up.

Definitely a bummer about Finding Neverland. But I'm still glowing over the Eternal Sunshine win. :)

Indeed, and they were well-deserved in those catagories. I just didn't think it it was worthy of some of the others it was nominated for.

Although, who knows? I may have had too many high expectations when I went to see it. I was expecting more though. I've always been a Scorsese fan for a long time and just didn't think this was his best.

I haven't seen Ray, but I have seen Jamie Foxx perform as the Ray character on other shows(talk shows, etc) and they were all spectacular performances. Definitely has come a long way since the in living color days.

Sean Penn seems eternally pissed off. For God's sake, it was a comedic monologue. :rolleyes: Does he think Jude is going to call him tomorrow and say "thank you for upholding my honor"?

It's a context thing. Would I purchase an album of the Oscar song performances? No. Are they better than the actor’s speeches? Absolutely.

I see. Can't agree though. I watch it mostly for the results, and secondly because I think the excitement they feel in their speech is infectious. I'm so happy for all of them when they're totally blissed out in front of the mike. Total vicariousness on my part. I know I'll never win one, so this is as close as I'll get. ;)

I loved when the Spanish film won for best song, and the guy simply sang a few lines from the song and said "Ciao! Thank you!" Awesome moment. :snap:

I like Rock's comeback about his accountant. I think Penn owns him $80! HAHAHAHAHAH!

I had my traditions for Oscar night. Sat at home, by myself, taping the show, eating Mint Chip IceCream and tabulating my score of what I think will win. I go 11 right this year.

As for the Oscars, I think I watched five minutes. Mr Foxx looked great in that suit. And his speech was quite touching. Grandmothers, beat your grandbabies and tell them to act like they've got some sense. Does them good, apparently.

Selma Hayek looked amazing. Seemed a rather drab year in the glamour/swank department. A lot of dark hair, dark dresses, and dark make-up. On Selma it worked.

Yay Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind win. And boo to Clive Owen's loss, yes? Morgan Freeman got that? Nothing against Freeman; he's always grand. But Owen's was one of the finest performances I've seen in a good long while.

My .02: Just like the Grammys, the Oscars this year was a mildly entertaining tv show. The pool of films from which the academy members chose was exceedingly narrow and predictable (with the major exception of the nominated Actress movies). Bummer about Scorsese. Bummer about Johnny Depp. ...and why has no one here mentioned Brad Bird? Yay for him. (ps. if you don't already own it, buy The Incredibles soundtrack CD. It is easily the swankiest score of the year - John Barry meets Henry Mancini).

Oh totally! But it wasn't as if there was any competition for that category. I didnt' know The Incredibles had so many noms - it was rather impressive for an animated film.

I did see him smile and such but still, so uptight. And I have to admit that I really don't like the facial hair and the jacket looks like he's going to prom! :eek: Bummer all around.

Oh, that is a bit disappointing. I could deal with the facial hair. Kinda reminds me of Edgar Allan Poe. But that's not a very flattering suit. On anyone. Yeesh.

I'm going to go against popular opinion and give two snaps for having the technical awards folks on stage. For the most part, these aren't big name people recognizable on sight and if they get a few more seconds of honor by standing up on that stage, yay for them.

My husband noticed that Miss Zellweger looked better with her Bridget Jones weight.

And why does Natalie Portman always wear dresses that accentuate her lack of cleavage?

Well, I just finished watching my taped Oscars (hot date tonight, had to timer them) and I have to say that I enjoyed this year a lot more than recent years. They seemed really scaled back and not as over the top, which I appreciated. My thoughts:

-First. Hurray for Balcony Lady's giganti-boobs! (And the rewind button! :D) Woo hoo! Oscar history in the making, right there.

-Hated the "Oscar at your seat" idea. Felt cheap. Loved Rock's crack about it.

-Loved the Carson tribute. Very touching, and showed what a difference real class makes.

-Balcony Lady's enormous boo.... Oh, sorry, covered that. :D

-Best Speech was definitely the recipient for the best song. Forgot his name, but very swanky route to go with his choice of acceptance speech.

-Clint Eastwood is truly worthy of his stardom. Today's John Wayne, only oozing dignity and charm.

-Morgan Freeman finally received the honor he truly deserves. It's about time!

-Jeremy Irons deadpanning at the background clanging was priceless.

-The pairing of Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek, and Salma's cleavage. Wow. I've had that dream several times.... ;)

-Jamie Foxx has completely won me over. If his speech wasn't worthy of teary eyes, then I don't know what is. And his daughter; what a little scene stealer! Bravo Mr. Foxx!

I watched the Oscars over at Al's house tonite and we very much enjoyed how this lady's tits clapped along with her. But not at the same time. It was almost as if... they had a mind of their own! OOOOOOhhhh. Spookay!

Also... did anyone notice that when that chick from Phantom came on, she had her mic set in between her breasts and you could HEAR HER HEART BEATING? ROFL..... The whole rest of the evening I was going "Oh Pierre! ... You shouldn't have COME!" :D (Please tell me I am not the only one that gets that reference).

1) Gil Cates is a ninny. What awful ceremony decisions, all down the line.

2) All of you really need to see the winning animation short, "Ryan." It was one of the best films I saw all year. Actually, all of you need to see all of the original shorts. Both categories were almost as good as Best Actress. I wish they'd release them with other films. We saw them at the Egyptian on Friday.

3) I would have voted for Staunton and Madsen, but I knew Swank and Blanchett would win. I only got five categories wrong. Woo hoo! Plus, Payne and Kauffman's wins made me particularly happy.

4) I actually thought Banderas killed "Al Otro Lado Del Rio." It's quite beautiful in its original form. But I'm just glad that Lloyd Webber and Silvestri didn't win the category.

5) Poor Marty, yes. But M$B was my favorite big film of the year, so I'm glad it won.

I found some of the presenter introductions to be...weird. Like, "The multitalented, Drew Berrymore." Or, "The likeable, Mike Meyers." Huh? Is that all they could come up with. "likeable"? Odd.

i was at an oscars party last night, very fun, I was upset that Finding Neverland did not win more, or Phantom of the Opera. both were movies i enjoyed thoroughly, however, Aviator was one I did not, IMHO, it drug on and was a bore after the 2nd hour.

oh, and thinking back now really quick, the guy that won the lifetime acheivment award last night, how many times did they pan up to shoot his balcony with his family, which included two horrendously plastic women? must have been like 8 times!

I hosted an Oscars party. Six women in the living room, three boys under the age of 8 upstairs.
The upstairs looked as if a tornado had hit, but we were able to watch the awards in relative silence.
Lots of leftovers, could have fed another small army. Lots of wine was drank by all.

I think, for me, the best moment was the interviews with the public. It'll be a long time before I forget the man who's favorite movie was Chronicles of Riddick, and then was unable to get a second fave.
One of the damn funniest bits I've seen in a while.

We were all very fond of the GAP analogies.

I was pleased with whom the awards were given to, though not at all surprised. wasnt EW about dead on in their predictions? I saw some of the men I adore... not as many as I would like, but heck.. they arent the award types anyway.
The dead on Poitier impersonation was great. And although everyone I have talked to said that Robin Williams was repeating what he's done before, it made me laugh.

I must be the only one who liked the method of having some awards handed out at the seats, so that the nominees could be "scanned" while seated as the noms were announced, and also of the groups of nominees brought on stage all at once while the noms were announced. It's been eighty years of having every bloody award delivered in the same way, and I applaud the effort to put some variety into it. And I frankly think that the nominees got more coverage this way.

I didn't hate too many outfits this year, but someone oughta tell Hillary that backless is not the Swankiest look for her.

I'm really glad The Aviator didn't make the sweep it looked like it was headed for. I guess it was top notch in all the artistic categories for which it won, but I don't think it was really better than most of the other nominated competition. Ditto for Cate Blanchett's win. Others were, I think, more deserving (cough*LauraLinney*cough), but there's no denying that Cate was the life line of her movie (which lost all its juice once her character was out of the story).

I'm really glad that Eternal Sunshine won for original screenplay, though I was routing for The Incredibles (it was a shoe-in for animated film, but would have been a breakthrough to win for it's fantastic script).

I'm bummed that Finding Neverland only won for best score. Better than totally empty-handed I suppose. But I really felt that, out of very slim pickings, it was the best of the nominated films. I thought Million Dollar Baby was a fine movie, but it's basically a tear-jerker and I detract points for that. And this is the first time that I felt the Best Animated Film was better than any of the Best Picture nominees.


Oh, and Sean Penn needs to find a sense of humor.

(That being said, Chris Rock was only so-so, and I predict he won't be back.)

I was mixed. What I disliked was the backdrop of random audience members either fidgeting (omg, that lady in the red dress during the first of these in-audience presentations. Sit still for crying out loud!) or freezing in panic nervously trying to decide whether to look at the camera or not. I found it distracting. However, I liked that chance that the nominees got to mug for the camera. I think it made some of the smaller awards stand out more.

I can't make love to a BUSH! tee-hee! OK so I am not completely crazy.

I think one of whom is the aforementioned woman with "TITS that ATE the WORLD!" Holy clapping mammaries, Batman!

I liked it too. Made the awards go by much faster.

Now if only they could chop out that middle section of the televised awards (i.e. short subjects, cinematographer, and others) the thing would be so much less boring. We want to see glamorous movie starts looking glamorous. I'm not saying they shouldn't give out awards for these things (because they should), but people at home don't really need to see it. Do what they do for the technical awards and have a prior awards ceremony.

Also, I agree with you ism about Chris Rock. Not that great.

They've been starting earlier for years, and it was still ending after 9.

Banderas was way too sweaty and cheesy on that song number. I had to switch him to the little window of my PIP.

Um, the show started at 5:30 instead of 6, and went to 8:40 instead of 9:10. Same amount of time as usual.


And yeah, lady in the red dress is the reason why the in-the-audience awards stunt should not be repeated. But I applaud the effort at trying something new.

This time around, I felt the overall event was just kind of "meh" to me. It seemed like they had handcuffs on Chris Rock, only "letting him out" for the opening monologue...

At least the food turned out well at my mom's house. Our family has this tradition where we all watch the Oscars together, starting at 3:00 p.m. with Joan Rivers and lots of champagne. :)

Instead of the usual carb-filled potluck, we went for "haute cuisine". My sister brought marinated shrimp for appetizers, my mom made a pineapple upside-down cake for dessert and I was in charge of dinner.

I made a butter lettuce salad topped with pears, walnuts and feta cheese (with some Newman's Raspberry vinaigrette). Then some Parmesan Chicken and baked potatoes. Turned out really well. Yay!

The only thing the group of us could not stomach was STAR JONES. Blech. How painful to have to turn off E! We all love Kathy Griffin but we couldn't take Star. And was Joan Rivers on some kind of drug? She's just getting odder and odder as she gets older. Maybe it's all that plastic surgery or sumthin'.... ;)

Thought Halle Berry's hairstyle was awful, loved Drew Barrymore's new darker hair color, but the hit of the night to us was Hilary Swank and her newly-chiseled body in that rockin' blue dress. You go, girl!

I heard some clips of her on Kevin and Bean this morning. Holy god, what is wrong with that woman? And what is wrong with the people at TV Guide channel to pay her 6 or 7 million dollars for that? She was an embarassment at best.

I thought Rene Zellwegger looked like Olive Oyl.

There were a few more people in similar color dresses that I thought the same thing. Color is better suited for someone with darker skin like Halley Barie (sp?)... at least to me.

Oh yeah, Natalie Portman was sporting, imo, the worst dress of the evening.

But say what you will about Halle Berry's hairstyle, I LOVED her gown. (And she had the best Chris Rock intro of the evening ... "star of the eagerly awaited Catwoman 2" - hahahahaha!)

More thoughts...

- Did anyone notice that they didn't play any film clips of the Best Picture nominees? I thought I always remembered them doing that in the past. I guess it could have been due to trying to keep things on schedule but it was weird that they weren't there.

In hindsite, I love Chris Rock's standup. He's one of my favorites. He was a very inappropriate choice for the show though. He just seemed out of place. I think there needs to be a certain element of classiness from the host of the Acadamy Awards and one of the things I love about Rock is his love of speaking his mind, no matter who it offends. Can't really do that on the show though, so his hands were pretty much tied.

Steve Martin was one of my favorite hosts. I thought he had the class thing going while being very entertaining. I wish I could have seen Carson doing it back in the day. I really enjoyed those clips.

I also enjoyed the trip to the Magic Johnson Theaters. It showed the vast disconnect between what has artistic merit and what is popular.

I thought Halle showed a lot of class showing up at the Razzies to accept her award for worst actress. I think it would have been great if she'd said something like "You hate me! You really, really hate me!"

But we got to hear "Pootytang" at the Oscars. Ya' gotta love that.

Speaking of color, I thought it was refreshing to see Charlize Theron opting not to wear... I mean be, orange this year. She looks much better in natural skin tones.


And was it just me or did Cruz and Hayek seem kind of awkward during their spiel. Kind of like, "I'm the hottest Latina movie star. Everyone knows it. Why did they put me with her?" Though, regardless, I still enjoyed their pairing. :)

When I heard about that it made me love her even more. I think it's awesome that she has a good enough sense of humor to not only take a joke, but play along with it as well. Maybe Sean Penn should hang out with her for a while; see if it rubs off.



Ya know, I did notice that. They showed hardly any clips of nominees and it bugged the hell out of me. Especially for categories like animated short, I love seeing the clips from the actual film. It was nice to see the nominees there smiling and getting some face time, but the award is for the film, so we should see some of that too. No clips for best pic is really surprising. Almost takes away the drama.
