Music Swap and Party Talk

Hey, hey, hey. Hi, hi.

Allow me the floor for a few minutes; there are a couple of things I'd like to discuss.

PART 1 - The Book Swap Party Hardy (in Hollywood)

First things first, I've decided to throw a party sometime in the early fall, to usher in the pretty death of things before winter. I'm in the party mood now, but we're in the middle of a heat wave and my apartment doesn't have air conditioning.

The party is two fold. In the afternoon I plan to host a book swap, where people bring in their used and/or unwanted tomes to offer up for grabs. You get rid of the old and maybe bring home some new, and then I'll cart what's leftover to the local library. There will be a book swap after party and I'm hoping my friend will DJ.

My apartment isn't huge but I'd like to invite a lot of people. There's a parking lot in back that could be somewhat converted into a patio area...I'll be inviting all the neighbors, so hopefully they won't mind/complain/bitch/be miserable.

If you're at all interested in attending, please PM me your email address (don't assume I have it; I lose phone numbers and email addresses so often one would assume I hate people, which isn't the case) and I'll be sure to include you in the Evite. I'm going to aim for late September/early October...hoping the weather will have cooled a bit by then.

PART 2 - Music

I'm back on a music kick, but this time around I'm trying not to spend ungodly amounts of money. So, I'd like to organize a music swap where participants take turns putting together mixed CDs for the group. (So, if there are 10 people participating, you'll be responsible for making 10 copies of the CD and mailing them out.)

Additionally, people can make specific requests. For example, I'm looking for 5, 6, 7, 8's albums. I was going to use my iTunes gift card to purchase, but I can only find one of their songs on a mixed CD. So, if anyone has any of their albums, I'd be grateful if they could burn me a copy. And if there's anything I have that you want, I'll return the favor....

If this is of interest to anyone, let me know and I'll figure out the best way to go about it. I'm not sure using the LoT for my own purposes (aside making the announcement) is the right thing to do, or welcome. Maybe a Yahoo group or something similar would be preferable, since I'll likely be posting this request elsewhere (on LJ), as well. If anyone interested has a suggestion for how they think this would best work, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks for reading!

Cheerio,
Aud

Sounds great, I'm not local, but sounds ideal for a swanky bash.

Matterhorn Fan 08-31-2007 12:17 PM

Sounds like fun, but I'm not local either. Bummer.

Gemini Cricket 08-31-2007 12:20 PM

I'm local and I want to borrow all of Eliza's Nancy Drew books and burn copies off all of her Debbie Gibson hits.

:D

mousepod 08-31-2007 12:30 PM

tempting....

Will you be unpacked by then? ;)

I have to say, you have way more media than I've ever seen in anyone's house. Those binders are scary! But good!

I'm welcoming anyone who can make it, but my pad won't accommodate a lot of stayovers...unless there's a camp out with camping mattresses and the like!

Awww, I only have one ND book and NO Debbie Gibson albums. So, so sorry to disappoint, but I'm sure we'll be able to come up with something to swap/share/etc.

Dude, your attendance is mandatory now that you're a local. MANDATORY!

BarTopDancer 08-31-2007 12:45 PM

I don't have a lot of books but I have over 100 gigs of music with more to come in the next few weeks.

Much appreciated and tempting, believe me. I'll be in LA 9/13 (late) to 9/17. But that is not late September so, I'm likely not to be in attendance, sorry to say.

How about the Hardy Boys and Tiffany?
:D

Hopefully we'll have the chance to meet when you visit.

mousepod 08-31-2007 01:00 PM

BTW, I can't wait to make a "mixtape" for you all. Beware...

Will it have any Shina Riingo (spelling?) on it?

I was originally just going to write:

Dear Jesse,
Make me mix CDs!
Love,
Audra

But I thought I'd open it up and not put all the pressure on you.

innerSpaceman 08-31-2007 02:17 PM

Depending on when this is happening, I would really dig doin' it.

(Friends talk about music swap parties all the time, and it's such a good idea that doesn't materialize nearly enough)

Morrigoon 08-31-2007 02:40 PM

Sounds like fun!

katiesue 08-31-2007 02:48 PM

I have no Nancy Drew but I do have Trixie Belden.

Um, then it's my house you want to be visiting. Alas, I have no Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys, but I do still have all of my Debbie Gibson & Tiffany LP's. :D

Betchya I can dig up some stored Sweet Valley High action!

See, all the super cool stuff happens at Audra's. If you dig on Rick Astley vinyl & High School romance, then come to Ally country. ;) :p

Prudence 08-31-2007 03:04 PM

I have Nancy Drew AND Trixie Belden AND the Bobbsey Twins.

Alas, you'd have to come here to see them.

Ponine 08-31-2007 03:07 PM

you know, depending on the date, I would love to attend.

Esp if Zapp and his theme park collection would be available.
But otherwise, I have tons of stuff that just might be interesting.
Nothing really new, but still.

Gemini Cricket 08-31-2007 06:44 PM

I have lots of music to share.
:)

Books... well... not so much.

katiesue 08-31-2007 10:30 PM

My mom has Bobbsey Twins, perhaps I can swipe em.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 09-01-2007 01:42 AM

I have Debbie Gibson.... somewhere....hmmm

Didn't you put her in a big ziploc bag?

tracilicious 09-01-2007 10:13 PM

It just so happens we might be in town late September/ early October. Maybe we'll get lucky! (Ok, me. I would totally ditch Michael and the kids.)

Ghoulish Delight 09-03-2007 10:05 AM

Late September/early October is an impossibility for us as we will be traveling for the better part of 3 weeks. But if the music swap happens some time outside that range, we're totally in.

€uroMeinke 09-03-2007 10:11 AM

I like Media

Not Afraid 09-03-2007 11:12 AM

Great idea! I'm so there.

NirvanaMan 09-04-2007 01:10 PM

Surprsingly, I have a spattering of Nirvana CDs.

I'm gonna push the sucker to November so hopefully you'll be free then.

mousepod 09-11-2007 09:58 AM

We bought two new bookshelves and still have too many books. A major culling of fiction is going to happen very soon. Heather made me promise that even if we bring many books to the swap, we can't take any home with us (ok... maybe one or two).

Ghoulish Delight 09-11-2007 10:02 AM

We're in the same boat with music. We just bought what we thought was a ton of storage drawer space to hold our CDs...but they don't fit. We're going to have to cull the collection. Any CDs we end up taking home from a swapping session will likely be immediately converted to digital and disposed of.

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 02-13-2008 03:04 PM

I'm resurrecting old plans.... First things first: book swap, hopefully in Hollywood before the book swap. So, March? April?

LSPoorEeyorick 02-13-2008 03:08 PM

I'm in!

Though I'm out of town the first weekend of March, celebrating 2-9 on 3/9 (well, 2/10 but it's a work day) and Sweeny Toddling 3/22. I'd be open to double-booking around those latter two activities, and I'm fully open the rest of March and April...

blueerica 02-13-2008 03:17 PM

Ooh, I may be out there in March...

innerSpaceman 02-13-2008 04:55 PM

What are the participation requirements? Old books we're tired of but that we think someone else on earth might possibly enjoy?

Do they have to be fiction?

I'm in. Presuming I'm in town.

No phone books. Heh. And referably nothing too horribly damaged. A coffee stained cover, no problem. Water-logged because your house flooded, maybe not.

They can be books you read and hated. Books you read, enjoyed, but probably won't read again and would rather not keep around taking up space. I love books and I have ones I'll never give up, but I'm not exactly a collector. I've always clung to my books - wanted to own them, show them off - but I'm trying to de-clutter, be less attached to things I don't really need. I want to keep the books I'll re-read, the ones I'd like to share but ultimately have returned. But there are some I have just because I read them once upon a time, and so they are being wasted. Aesthetically I enjoy seeing books I've read or plan to read around. But I don't own a home and I will move again someday, and I don't want to keep packing up and moving books I'll never read again.

Etc.

innerSpaceman 02-13-2008 05:43 PM

Alas, I can't read anymore. I have developed such incredible book narcolepsy that a few pages will put me out like a light.

As you might imagine, it takes me years to get thru a single book. Waaaaa.

I am slightly confused. Is there some famous public book swap that you are referring to? it seems like in the bolded part you are saying "book swap before the book swap"

And is there going to be a music swap as well?

How about a wife swap?

Not Afraid 02-13-2008 06:06 PM

I think we'd be in.

You'd better be more specific, following Kevy's post.

Typo. Am reopening the book swap discussion before moving on to discuss the possibility of an ongoing music swap (that wouldn't necessary require meeting up in person, but occasional get-togethers would be swell, and swanky).

I'll show up, but no promises on whether the books I bring will be any good or not. I'm not a book purchasing type.

Great. I'm counting on you to pack up all the books no one wants and lug them back to your library, as a donation.

She says, with a jokey smile on her face. There's a library right around the corner from me, where I'll donate the unwanted. And what *they* don't want, I'll take to goodwill, etc.

innerSpaceman 02-13-2008 07:30 PM

I've a feeling no one would want the books I no longer want.

But, ya never know .... count me in.

on the book swap.

€uroMeinke 02-13-2008 09:00 PM

We have lots of books, but do we really need to cart them around? is there a virtual way to do this and still have a party?

Nope. You're going to have to bring them. It's a foolhardy plan, really. In my attempt to de-clutter, I'm actually going to end the party with a lot more unwanted books than I started out with, and then I'm going to have to - sans car - figure out a way to get them to libraries, etc. Heh.

Cadaverous Pallor 02-14-2008 01:59 PM

I volunteer to take any unclaimed books to the library for donating.
