Name Your Drink(s)
So what are your favorite drinks these days? What are your ordering? What are you enjoying?
I've always been a Martini man of the James Bond variety (Vodka - Shaken, not stirred). Nothing says cocktail sophistication like a clear single olive adorned Martini. However, in my travels I've been sampling Mojitos - having had an excellent one in Paris, and another good experience in Chicago. Alas, when I tried three of the four varieties at Tortilla Joes - they all disappointed. A recent household experience thanks to Mixologist Tramspotter has restored my faith in the cocktail, but seeing the complexity in preparation - I see that it would be hard to order a good one from anything but a top-notch bar. At home Bhura Pegs , have been a hit - but again, this is something you have to make yourself to ensure you have the proper ingredients. These days, my favorite drink to order has been the Manhattan - dark cousin to the martini. Done right it has just enough depth and sweetness to fully satisfy. And the bright cherry shining through the ruddy-amber mix is a quintessential icon of cocktailery. |
I've discovered Whaler's dark rum. I've been drinking it neat. It's delicious and warming.
My perenial faves are gin martinis, gin and tonic, Long Islands. The Lost Bar at the DLH makes one of the best Long Islands around. A less frequent treat is a Side Car. Hearthstone makes a good one. Dark and sweet, nice and alcoholly. |
im with GD, my favorite as of late has been the Long Island Iced Tea, TGI Fridays makes a good Ultimate LI, love it.
past that, its Cabarnet Savignion for me :) |
I don't drink very often and when I do, it is usually a glass of wine. If I happen to be in a particularly festive mood though, I like (in no particular order, just depends on the mood)
White Russian - (has to be good vodka though) Bloody Mary (a well-made one in the morning is a treat. Ditto on needing good vodka) Captain Morgans Private Reserve (yummy) Celtic Crossing (a honey flavored Irish whisky that is a bit hard to find but delicious) |
It's no secret that tequila is my alcohol of choice, but occasionally I'll take a break from it. Lately, I've sort of rediscovered Bloody Mary's, but I don't like them if the mix is too spicy. I also like Long Islands, Lemon Drops and Absolut with cranberry juice.

Black Jack, out of the bottle...
Plain wrap Vodka, out of the bottle but thats only after I've been snortin coke off the stomachs of hookers  how about a mineral water or a Shirley Temple...thats probably safer for me |
I'm a vodka girl, myself, I prefer a Ketel 1 & tonic, or on rare occassion, a Ketel 1 & Red Bull.
|
Long Islands, Midori Sours and Fuzzy Navels are my drinks of choice. I've been drinking Ketel 1 vodka tonics (thanks you know who you are ;) ). I'm not a wine or beer person, though with the right meal a glass of wine is nice.
|
Oh yes, and I'm a beer fan. My general rule is, the darker the better, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy a fine Heffenwizen or a good pale ale. A more universal rule is, the smaller the brewery the better.
|
Another Vodka girl here.
I love a raspberry martini made with raspberry absolut and chambord. Stoli Vanilla and 180 Stoli Vanilla Cosmo Grey Goose Cosmo Stoli Vanilla Lemon drop(see a trend? ;)) Once in awhile I'll go with a margarita, I prefer a Cadillac margarita or italian margarita or midori cadillac. Had a pomegranate one that was delish! If I want something to sip I like Tequlia Rose or Baileys. Last time I went out though it was SoCo/Cranberry in a nod to Disguy and Sparky. |
Vodka Chilton's - vodka, 1/2 a lemon and soda water...salt rim! Yummm!
That's probably my number one drink of choice. If I'm undecided, I'll go with a Cosmo. Or if we're dining ala Mexicana, must have a margarita. Not much of a beer girl, allthough I do actually like beer. But if you can see thru it, forget it. The darker the better. I even like Stout! And I'm no stranger to a good shot of Tequila, with a lick of salt and a squeeze of lemon. |
I have a number of favored drinks, but if we're going for the standard thing to order, I have a short list.
Once upon a time, I would order Whiskey Sours, because they were the only thing I felt I could guarantee would turn out at least okay... But after a few bad experiences in a row (and a few thirsty moments on the dance floor), I stopped that train, and hopped on the vodka tonic train. I like Grey Goose best, but Belvedere is a good vodka, and Ketel One has been a family favorite. I also like a good martini, but not too dirty. Preferred martini is up with a twist or pearl onions. The Encounter kept insisting on putting olives in my 'tinis with the lemon twist :YUCK:. I'm peculiar about my olives, and I don't care for most kinds that come in a jar in the states... So don't muddy up my perfectly good martini with your dirty olive juice! If I'm feeling cold, and want something to give me the warm and fuzzies, these days, it's been the Manhattan. Deep down, I've always been a whiskey girl. If I'm really cold, it's a brandy or Frangelico (if I've got a bit of a sweet tooth). Out to dinner: Cabernet Sauvignon, or the occasional Sauvignon Blanc. |
Whenever I'm out and in the mood for an after dinner drink, I either go for a brandy or, my favorite, a port.
|
Husband has been waaay into Stone IPA (beer) but any IPA is good for him. He's been home brewing too and made, what I'm told, was a wicked stout that was "thick and chewy". I'm not a beer drinkin' girl so all I know is that it smelled icky like beer does. ;)
For myself - I like girly-fru-fru drinks like mai tai's, pina coladas and that ilk. Gimme a pineapple juice and malibu rum or a malibu and diet coke - which tastes a lot like a cream soda for some reason. A shot of Patron (tequilla) never hurt anyone (too much anyway.) Used to drink Whiskey sours but got bored with them. I'm really liking the variety of drinks here. Want to try that Stolli Vanilla Lemon drop for sure! |
Ah, yes how foolish of me to leave out my most favorite of all - the evening Cognac. My favorite that I can find at most bars is Hennesy. but there are some pricey smaller brands that are much superior, but I can rarely afford.
If I can find it, a good Calvados (Apple Brandy) is a delight, I'll sometimes choose this instead of a desert if available. I used to order margaritas (on the rocks please) at bars since they were a difficult drink to do wrong, but I've goten board with that practice. Now I like to look through the bars specialty drink menu where I try to find something that's not disgustingly sweet. Oh, and outside the cocktail genra, it's sparkling water and coffee. Soda is usually the last beverage selected. |
I love grape nehis. Love love love 'em. But lots of places will turn up their noses and inform me that they don't SERVE that kind of drink. (So, you'll serve something called a "fuzzy navel" or "sex on the beach" but "grape nehi" is too cutesy? Whatever.) Long Island will do in a pinch. And we've got some chocolate coconut rum at home that does a happy dance when paired with vanilla coke.
And for parties: I have a great recipe for Watermelon Guava Kamikazes made by the batchful. |
Beers: Guinness, a Heffenweizen, Becks, Sapporo, and if they’re not available, Heineken.
I love a tasty Mojitos in the spring and summer. Mint Julips, too. Mmmmm. The best Scotch I have ever had, and we’re talking nectar harvested from the tit of Mother Nature herself, is Laugavulin. http://www.scotchwhisky.com/focus/lagavulin.htm |
I like me some beer too, heffeweisen is one of my favorites, or a good dark ale, but I really do stick to my wine mostly. Found a Cab Sav. at Disneyland, from a place called dynamite vineyards, YUMM
|
When I have a nasty head cold, I like heated B&B brandy. Good stuff.
|
I am the original lovah of vanilla Stoli Lemon Drops. Mmmm...mmmm!!! I've had some badly made ones, but when they're made right, they're delish!
I love a peartini lately. Tasty! Sometimes too sweet....but all the better with a flavored vodka. Last night it was Hefeweizens in the VIP section of the Rose Garden at the Blazers/Pistons game. Tonight it's listening to the melodic voice of Paul Reusabagina (did I spell that right?) with a glass of wine. I'm going to a lecture by him, followed with a Q&A, and I just found out that wine will be served. :snap: Crossing my fingers for an Oregon pinot noir. I'm flexible, drink-wise. The beer must not be see-through. Anything else cannot taste too much like alcohol, be too sweet, be served with a little umbrella, or contain chunks of fruit (unless it's an olive--are olives fruit?). |
I like me a nice root brewski.
|
Euromeinke, margaritas, defintely on the rocks!! :snap: I don't care for blended drinks. With one exception, a couple of weeks ago I had a
Georgia Peach fresh peaches fresh raspberries peach brandy peach liquer blended and swirly, first blended drink I really liked in a very long time!! |
I went to a party in Atlanta last year where the bartender employed a "drink roulette" device: you'd put a dollar down and then he'd spin the wheel to choose your drink for you. I discovered that night that I loved "sex on the beach."
Normally I'm a beer gal and don't much like the hard stuff, but a good vodka martini, stirred, not shaken! with a bleu-cheese-stuffed olive is fun occasionally. We're a Ketel 1 family. When it comes to wine, which it does sometimes, it must be red. I like a nice merlot or a Spanish table wine. Can't abide the whites... |
I'm actually not very prejudice in my alcohol consumption. Fruity, blended, hard, girly, whatever. My ONLY requirement is flavor and quality. For instance, I do drink Bud or any of that ilk. That's what I like to call "beer for people who don't like beer".

It's easier to tell you what I will NOT drink than what I will.
I will NOT drink anything with any word other than Vodka or Gin in from of the word Martini. In my opinion those are froofroo and not martini proper and the word martini should never be used. I also like: Manhatten BuraPeg KirRoyal Champagne And, at my worst, see Fej's post. |
I really have a problem with cocktails, since I can't stand Vodka. That eliminates like 90% of them, and puts me at odds with every barfly in America.
It's no secret around here that I drink only 7&7's and tequila. Tequila is my booze of choice because its effects are the most druglike of all alcohol influences (although I've never yet eaten one of those drowned worms.) I love Margaritas, but mostly go for the Tequila Sunrise. It's such a Peter Pan/manboy's drink, and how appropriate is that?! :iSm: |
Holy shiit, I'm something of a Peter Pan/manboy and I didn't even know it. I'm not usually much of a drinker but when I do drink it's mostly Tequila Sunrise or Margaritas -- and yes, I drink 7&7, too. Oh yeah, and beer. Cold, cold beer.
|
Well, here's the rundown from last year's CityWalk alcoholfest, pretty much all favorites
First up, a green apple martini at Daily Grill a Cosmopolitan at Gladstone's A pint of Maarsen at Karl Strauss A shot of Cuervo Gold at Camachos an AMF to finish me off at Saddle Ranch We didn't bother with Hard Rock Cafe or Jillian's, but I'm sure I could find something there :D  |
To quote UB40: "Red, red wine."
Merlots Pinon Noirs Whatever :) I'm not too much of a wine snob to know which winery, year and type of grape... :D |
I like Rum, straight is fine, but mixed with coke is heaven. I also like vodka, there is an Energy drink called "V" and if you mix it just right with vodka it is beautiful, beer is ok, and so is wine, I prefer white but I can go over to red anytime, not picky.
|
Baybreeze baby. Absolute Vodka, Pineapple & a Dash o' Cran.
But even better... The Capt. Morgan Parrot Bay Rum MANGO flav instead of the Absolute. Good to the last drop! |
I'll drink anything that has Malibu Rum in it.
Pineapple juice & malibu Coke & malibu Cranberry juice & malibu etc.... |
Oh that Mango Malibu has gotten the best of me before... Dangerous!
|
I've gotten smashed on a Chocolate Martini before.
Not good. ;) |
Quote:
You gotta try the Pinapple version or the Capt. Morgans Mango or Pineapple. |
Quote:
|
Of course, if I really want to get smashed, I just reach for a fine meat-tini.
(and yes, I meant I do NOT drink Bud) |
Quote:
You been talking to Tramspotter? |
|
I always liked a "Screaming Viking" with the cucumber bruised
|
I personally like anything that is bought for me, or any drink given to me by a beautiful woman. :D
|
Oh dear, I forgot that I wanted to post a link to this wonderful story on someone who actually had a $10,000 Martini at the Algonquin Hotel.
Check it out here. |
I'm not much of a drinker. Not only because I am not supposed to drink anything (cuz of meds), but I have just never developed a taste for hard liquor.
I do enjoy a good beer (if they regularly have TV commercials, I probably don't drink it). And lately I have taken a fancy to hot chocolate with Butterscotch Schnapps. Just like candy! Quote:
I've heard* that the only reason Bud is so popular is because it is the only thing a drunken person can order - being one syllable and all. * From a comedian - ALWAYS a reliable source of information! |

Cool story, €uro! I love that painting as well- "A Vicious Circle".:snap: |
I tried an Apple Martini just a few weeks ago. Yum!
My staple is Tequila Sunrise. |

Hmmmm. What I drink totally depends on my mood and the venue. For a night out at the pub, it’s usually beer. Never lager (except for Corona). Usually from a smaller, NZ brewery. Very occasionally, cider.
With dinner, it’s wine. I’m enjoying Pinot Noir at the moment for red, and sauvignon blanc for white. Hardly ever drink bubbly. Spirits-wise I like Gin & Vodka. A good gin and tonic is great. Martinis only with vodka though (and I hate olives, so a twist). I have been known to have the odd Appletini or Lemon Drop. Mojitos are great too. Back in my student days shots were my thing. Now I’m a <cough> a grown up, not so much;) Fun thread:snap: |

<---I prefer $14 martinis at the Algonquin Hotel. |
I'm a water drinker, and for an exciting evening? Chamomile tea. Water and herbal teas- that's my poison. :)
It's funny! I've always said & felt the same exact thing that Claire posted. No umbrellas! And definitely no produce sections bobbing in my elixirs. Of course, any tropical holiday is totally the exception! For me? Holiday cocktails! By this, I mean a drink that seems to be in perfect unison with my setting. I certainly don't mean this in a snobby way at all! :( Just in a fond, warm memory-kinda-way. Think of it as a liquid postcard. :) My favorites? *Brandied Keoke Coffee curled up in front of a roaring fireplace, in the Awahnee Hotel in Yosemite. Mmm..even my memory is all snuggly & blankety. *Hot Chocolate with Butterscotch Schnapps, or a Peppermint Patty after snow boarding or ice skating, in the Ski Lodge in Park City, Utah & Vail, Colorado. (Hot Toddy's are wicked Thera-Flu.) *Frothy Chi-Chi's lounging poolside, or sunbathing on the beach in Maui (the umbrella exception comes into play!) *Singapore Slings on the Island of Java, and Bali (after a few of these, I swear we all spoke the same language!) And my usual for any spot? *Belvedere martini, straight up & with a twist *Sapphire & Tonic My signature drink used to be a Cosmopolitan. I don't think I could ever down one again. I'm certain of that! |
My favorite non-alcoholic drinks are Coca Cola, V8, and fruit juice (apple, grape, orange, cranberry).
I usually have a Long Isle but I'm okay drinking just about anything except for beer or straight shots. Although I'll drink it I'm not too fond of wine either. |
Quote:
I've been on an Earl Grey kick lately. Since the weather here is getting really nice, I've been having it iced. It's so dreamy. |
If we're going non-alcoholic, I'll take a vanilla coke. Several, actually.
|
If just out of sheer volume of consumption, it would be Diet Coke. I usually have one in the morning before work, one on my first break, one with lunch, and one for the drive home. That's about 80 ounces of that carbonated stuff. I'm sure my bones hate me much for all that abuse. First runner up is water, and second runner up is 2% lowfat milk.
Now, when it comes to cocktail hour  I usually tilt back Smirnoff Ice like it was lemonade. Wait, come to think of it, it really is lemonade! A touch more potent, but lemonade just the same! :D My other favorite is Bailey's Irish Cream. Anything made with Bailey's Irish Cream! :coffee:  I've also been known to try different concoctions just to see how they taste and make me feel. But the key to my drinking has always been moderation. I never drink more than three hard drinks at any given time. If I do, I will not leave the establishment I'm drinking at for two hours after I've downed them. |
Ice-cold, non-fat milk... and lots of it!
I don't drink alcohol (never have, never will) and I don't care for carbonation in my beverages. (So sodas are right out.) If I'm in a bar I typically order a cranberry juice with lime or sometimes a virgin strawberry daiquiri. I enjoy most tropical and/or berry juices and juice blends. |
Quote:
YOU, dear UvaGirl, are a woman after my own heart. |
Generally my favorite drink is variety. I'm nearly allergic to repetition. If I've had it, I probably want something else.
That said, my favorites tend to be apple martinis (yes, I know it's not a real martini), Long Islands, Mai Tai, and nearly anything made with amaretto. I don't do much drinking because 1- hubby has a fit; his dad is an alcoholic so anything to do with alcohol makes him nervous, and 2-I usually have to drive home. I still have fun hanging out with my friends, but sometimes I do miss the cocktails. Beer? Microbrew is best. I home-brew, and will drink those. I like the line where someone said they didn't want to be able to see through their beer. Yeah. Wine? I like wine (as long as it's not Chardonnay), but usually will go for hard stuff if I'm out someplace. On Hallowe'en I do take a bottle of wine on my front step and hang out for the night with my bucket o' candy and my tarot cards. So it's not that I dislike wine, I just think I like other things better in most of my moods. |
