Top 50 Dystopian Movies of All Time

I've seen all but seven or eight of them, which is surprising and also depressing. I see too many movies!

I actually have most of these on DVD. Scary.

Wow, I must like this genre. I've seen 39 of the 50, and I have about half of those on DVD.


Now I want to see the others on the list.


Some of the inclusions are bogus, though. Serenity? Uh, a stretch.

But Pleasantville, WTF?

Cool list.
Metropolis, Clockwork and Children of Men... love 'em!

Damn, still haven't seen A Scanner Darkly.

I can't believe Running Man didn't make the list but some of this other schlock did. (Running Man is my type of schlock.)

I've seen about 20 of these. Wow. I impressed myself!

Not on the list and should be - The Handmaid's Tale

I'm not sure I'd rank them (the movies I've seen, at least) in the same order, but it's a cool list.

Also, I don't consider Wings of Desire a Dystopian film, but whaddeva.

I've seen a whopping 26 our of 50.

I can see how Wings of Desire made the list but I think Until The End of The World would have been a better Wim Wenders choice.

City of Lost Children AND Delicatessen. Awesome.

I counted 36 - I love the genre, but yeah, wouldn't have put Wings of Desire on the list, despite how great a film it is (End of Violence might be another Wim Wenders Choice).

So whens the Dystopia screenings?

Yeah, that one does NOT belong at all!

There were more reasons given, but I wanted to note that one since a couple of you mentioned The Handmaid's Tale.

Only 12, but I haven't seen many movies overall so that's not so bad. And the list includes some of my faves including Clockwork, Matrix and Idiocracy.

I guess Zardoz is dystopian - but when I saw it in the very early days of HBO, all I came away with was that James Bond was balding and that naked boobs can make a bad film watchable. ...and yes, I have the DVD.

Zardoz was my first R-rated movie. I think I had a sustained erection for 2 hours. We went with a friends father to get us in and I couldn't look him in the eye afterwards. Needless to say, I loved it at the time - but have never seen it since. I doubt I could ever recreate that experience.

Brazil and Twelve Monkeys are two of my all-time favorite movies. Terry Gilliam rocks.
