The Art of Pornography

This weekend some of us went to the Getty and one of their exhibitions was on nude photography. Of course I had to check this out, and was amused by the wall copy on one piece dated from the 1850's depicting two nude women in a suggestive embrace. It commented on the first use of photography being the capture of such pornographic content for explicitly private purpose. But it concluded by mentioning the age and patina of the work had degraded it's ability to arouse - as if, now (being in a museum) it clearly wasn't porn anymore. I smiled for Marcel Duchamp and Dadaist everywhere...

But what an amazing instance of synchronicity to here this on NPR coming home tonight:

World's Most Explicit Art Is on Exhibit in London

A major art exhibition in London at one of the UK's top galleries is not open to anyone younger than 18.

"Seduced," at the Barbican Gallery, is billed as the most sexually explicit fine-art exhibition ever staged. It attempts to show 2,500 years of sexuality in world art, and to explore how attitudes about what is erotic art and what is pornography have changed through the ages.
Makes me want to go back to London

Oh and you can see a few images at the Barbican site here

Ooh, the brothel frescoes from Pompeii! We saw those (and loved them!)

When I was DJ'ing for the Lifestyles organization (swingers - and I don't mean dancing), at their annual convention they always had an erotic art exhibit that was fascinating. You can get info about the current one at http://xartgallery.com/.

There is also the Museum of Sex in NYC (AKA MoSex). Susan and I visited there on our recent trip to NYC. Their site is museumofsex.com.

I really miss the Erotic Museum in Hollywood. It was one of our favorite old haunts. The sex toy box was the best... it was a big clear glass box full of lubricated sex toys. You could reach into big rubber gloves built into the side of the box and play with the toys (like they were radioactive waste in a nuclear plant.)

They also had great erotic folk art.

Sigh. How I miss thee.

€uroMeinke 11-14-2007 08:32 PM

What happened? - I thought it still existed

Moonliner 11-14-2007 08:45 PM

Wow, There were naked people over two thousand years ago? Amazing.

In the arse? That's NASTY.

I think it'd be fun to see an art of porn exhibit... reminds me of that book I need to get where it shows the bad furnishings in porn -- anyone ever see it before or can cough up an amazon link? Basically it was a book that showed porno stills with the people removed, so that you would pay attention to the AWFUL interior design skills of wherever it was shot.. so hilarious.

But also - why does this board have a bad word filter?

I found the Musée de l'érotisme. This may be the one y'all are talking about. It appears to still be alive and cooking.

I wouldn't be surprised if we (collectively here on the LoT) didn't have enough to start out own museum.

Not that I have anything to contribute!

CoasterMatt 11-15-2007 08:40 PM

I've only got an inflatable sword Happy Meal toy that Chernabog and friends used in a deviant manner...

alphabassettgrrl 11-15-2007 10:51 PM

There was a porn museum in Copenhagen but I couldn't get anybody to go with me and I ran out of time. I thought about it real hard though. :)

At work I've been put in charge of the crew while our usual guy is gone. Another woman has more seniority but was not given the spot. I think she's a little disturbed. Currently she's taking the whole show too seriously. She's caught in the middle; the designer and the two stagehands they brought are from another area, and sort of take themselves rather seriously. The second half to this is that they seem to think we're a bunch of monkeys.

It's kind of stressful and we see one of ours caught in the middle but we can't do anything to make it easier for her. She wants the non-local girl to stop freaking out about everything, but that one likes to freak out and if things go too smoothly she finds something about which to pitch a fit.

Me, the boss- who'da thunk it? Not the big boss, but a half a step up from the regular crew. What's touching is that a couple of my coworkers who I really respect - respect me back.

Maybe you should write the book. It would be a winner!

We'll just have to wait until the Swank Empire can run itself so we can take a few months off.
