Burton and Disney team up again - on Alice in Wonderland

Tim Burton is returning home to Disney.

Burton has signed a two-picture deal with the company that will see him direct and produce 3-D movies of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" and a remake of Burton's own "Frankenweenie."

A small part of me hopes and prays that he will snap out of the string of mediocrity he's been in since the turn of the millennium.

The rest of me echoes Pru. Remaking Frankenweeine? Whhhaaaat?!

I don't care what he does with Frankenweenie, as he's more than welcome to fvck up his own product. But must he destroy poor Alice with *shudder* motion capture?

Meh, there have been SO many versions of Alice, none of which I consider perfect (as much as I adore the Disney animated feature, it lacks in many ways) that I don't mind yet another crack at it. Not that I have high hopes.

Burton is a has-been hack. Who cares what he does?

What's a real bummer is the lack of ideas that Disney is going through right now. I mean, thank goodness for Pixar. But this constant strip-mining of their past efforts kind of bug. Remakes of The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, Flubber, etc. It's kinda lame. I mean, I bet there are a ton of ideas floating out there that can allow the Mouse to have another hit like Beauty & the Beast or Lion King, but it seems like no one there knows how to find it or recognize it...

I get the feeling from the article that it's not a remake of the Disney Alice - but his own (a la Chocolate Factory.) Not that it makes it any better, but, you know...

And while I rather prefer new ideas, I will say that Disney re-examining Alice is really no new groove. The Alice comedies were a nod to Carroll, as was the Mickey cartoon "Thru the Mirror." Not to mention a handful of TV productions like "Adventures in Wonderland."

Actually, a Burton look would work for an Alice movie. As long as it's NOT THE SAME SCRIPT as the already classic Alice. That would really piss me off.

I love Burton's stuff- and would live in one of his make believe worlds any day.

Alice with a darker twist would be interesting.

We could use a new Alice, I think.

Is there a dark, dark, dark Alice coming out? Not by Disney...

I like the idea of Burton taking a spin with Alice. I dig those derivatives. Remaking Frankenweenie is just...odd.

If it were someone I trusted not to make things a complete mess of things, I wouldn't be so upset. But to have someone fvck it all all, and with the weight of the Disney name behind it (not that that means much any more, but still....), that ticks me off.

There was finally some good Alice merchandise popping up and now it will be replaced by Tim Burton Alice.

What about a movie based on the video game Alice? Or did we talk about that already? There was one in the works, I thought.

Oooh - one caveat - if the Sweeny Todd thing turns out to be actually cool and not a complete disaster, I might be slightly optimistic.

I'm excited to see what he does with Alice. It could be really wonderful (and, yes, it could be horrid.) Frankenwenie, eh, whatever. ;)

This isn't the one that Marilyn Manson is involved in is it?? I heard Manson is working on an Alice movie but I really hope Disney isn't involved in it. I want to see a dark and twisted Alice.

There were rumors for a long time that Manson, rather than Depp would be Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Too bad that never panned out.

There is nothing listed on imdb for Manson and Alice. I find it very hard to believe that Disney and Manson would ever be involved in the same project based upon his persona/reputation alone and Disney's target market.

It seems only recently did Disney fully accept Nightmare into it's cannon - Disney's a big studio, they could release it under a number of different brands.

I'm curious about this one, I think I might just like to see what he does with Alice.

I LOVED "American Magee's Alice" and am hoping that this one will be in the same sinister / Black / Dark / Burtony-Magee-ee style. It really works. Call me twisted, but...

OK, Don't call me twisted.

Since 2005, Slave Labor Graphics have been doing some amazing Disney-sanctioned comics, including "Wonderland," written by Tommy Kovac and illustrated by Sonny Liew. It concerns the adventures of Maryanne (the White Rabbit's housekeeper that he mistakes Alice for in the Disney movie. I sure hope that Burton checks out this great story (it's as canonical as any Disney comic...)

I don't have a problem with Burton doing his take on the story, so long as he allowed to do just that- his take. I think it would be good, done properly. Alice in Wonderland has always been sort of a scary, twisted tale and it would be nice to see what Burton does with it. It's the Disney connection that makes me nervous.

I saw they were selling Haunted Mansion SLG book over at Disneyanna, but it's not that good. TRON is a huge PoS.

I stand by my trepidation. Not on some ideological stance against remaking it, or worrying about Disney's influence. But because of Burton. He's on a string of 5 films where the BEST one gets a, "Eh, that was fun," and the worst one I couldn't stand to watch more than 5 minutes of. We'll see what happens with S.T., but at this point, in my book, he's mediocre until proven otherwise.
