An American Icon Died today
He may not have been a great man, nor the most important figures in america, but he was an American icon just the same.
The Legendary Daredevil Evel Knievel Dies at 69. My parents took a road trip to see him [try to] jump the Snake River Canyon. I met him about 4 or 5 years ago, and he was having trouble walking, but seemed in good spirits. I got his autograph. My prayers go out to his family. Mr Knievel, may you rest in peace. Story here |
Sad to see that he died but he's one of those people I kinda thought was already dead so I've already made my peace.
|
I have a number of scars from imitating that man. May he successfully land his final jump to the hereafter...

Tomorrow, I'm going to get out of bed, read the news, find out that Evil Knievel died and start a threat on LoT.

PPPPfffftt!
Time for a shower. Or maybe I'll treat myself to a bath. |
Count me as one who is surprised and impressed that he made it to a full life span.

Just got home from work and I thought I'd check and see if he was still dead.

Or is he threatening to YAGE? |
EK has risen from the dead. News at 11.

(And a collective shudder goes through the PNW).
I should explain that here in the PNW, Evel wore out his welcome a long time ago. He used to party it up all over the place, from Coulee Dam to Eastern Montana, and he wasn't a nice drunk. (And he was drunk all the time). He was mean to servers, misogynistic, loud, obnoxious...... You get the picture. No one I know is feeling sorry he's gone, just surprised he lasted that long. He is still dead, right? |

Yes, I just heard that he died. |
Like most kids, in the '70s, I was a fan. I had the comic book, had his toy motorcycle (rev it up yourself!) and even was thrilled to see him drive by in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade.
Not long after, I heard that he was a racist and anti-semitic. Disgusted, I decided to use my third floor bedroom window as a launching pad for his motorcycle jumps. About a year ago, I hit the web to see if I could find any evidence that he was the nasty racist that I had heard he was, and turned up nothing. I wonder how I heard those stories... The story about his death have stirred up those feelings of confusion in me. Were the rumors true? Then good riddance, creep. Were they just rumors? Then farewell, daredevil... |
Hmm, never heard that. (Anti-semite mumblings about celebs are one of my dad's favorite topics)
