Merry Christmas - MA date announced
|
Hey - That's not Coachella weekend?
|
Hmmmm....Now that my spouse is all addicted and all......
|
So I'll just start my semi annual trash talking then - You're all going down!
(now that we actually have won I've got a little something to back it up) |
Not only is it my FIL's birthday, Robb's working the Saturday (he's off Wed/Thu/Sun at the time) and Spring Break is 2 weeks before. It's not looking good for me to make it down.

Looks like this will be my first MA. I will try not to tremble in my size 10s.
That's right, size 10s. Us tall girls can't all have freakishly tiny Barbie feet, NA! |

Guess who'll be in Vegas that weekend for another Bon Jovi concert? lmao it's not official yet but waiting on word according to Vegas radio they are playing MGM grand April 12th...
|
Just in case anyone missed the email - registration starts next week.

I think Fellowship of the Mouse needs to return after the 2-year hiatus. :D
Edit: Aw, crap. Just remembered that we'll be heading to Vegas that day for NAB. Damn. |

I'd play, if I can be carried about the premises on a litter, held aloft by no less than 4 maidens, and tended to by no less than 3 waterbearers, fruitbearers, and a bacon maiden. Oh yes, no green M&Ms.

Merry Chirstmas - MA date announced
CM and i will be in Las Vegas after Bon Jovi concert the previous night at MGM Grand and not returning home til Monday 4/14...so we won't be anywhere near Anaheim.

No, they'll be otherwise occupied and I'll be otherwise working. I'm not hiding, I just probably won't be around so tracking me down wouldn't accomplish much more than an awkward "hi, I got to go now."
Lani and I no longer have APs for the park, so if there are things that need to be done for the game that don't require park entry we'll probably end up doing all of those things and save whatever two park admissions is costing these days. Plus, I may not be able to take the following Monday off from work and if so we'll have to leave early so we won't be around much afterwards. Plus, unlike Leo I doubt there'd be any particular clamor to go out of anybody's way to find me, most of the people here have met me before. |
So, what's with this needing to decide on a team name now?
|
Really - we haven't even had time to go hat shopping yet

It's very frustrating that it closes so early without much advance notice. I understand the reasons behind it but that doesn't reduce the frustration. I was without computer access from last Tues to this Mon as I was out of town and my laptop crashed. Work has been hell this week so the second I logged on and saw the thread, it was closed.
It just seems to have worked this way the past 3 times. I do tend to have the worst luck in general. I miss the old way, although I assume it will never go back to that longer window that allowed those that aren't able to be as active on the boards (due to work responsibilities) as others to get a chance to learn about it and register. I'm still and always up for iSm's game. |
NM - if you go to MousePlanet under the MouseAdventure section you can sign up for e-mail updates. That way you get notified even if you're not checking the boards.
|
Also, if you know anyone who is new to the game, the MouseAdventure 101 version is still open.

OK peeps...lets all settle down here!!! 1st off....I did not send anyone anything!!! 2nd...Myspace sucks....I have been trying for 3 weeks now for them to respond to me so I can change my password so I can fix everything...do you really think someone who is Jewish would have "Heil Hitler" as their main comment. I still have not seen this picture...that link does not work. 3rd...I do not know what comments were sent out to who...I think most of you know that I am a pretty nice and quiet person. And last I have no idea how my account was hijacked....no one knows my password, and I have not clicked on anything that would jepordize my account...Having said that....I am ready to try and kick some butt with "ALL" my team members on sunday...

The past few years have had beautiful weather. This year, not so much. |
Yes, bloody hot. See how no one posted? We were wrecked. :) Plenty of fun though, some great quests this time around.
None of the usual suspects placed, though the Brother Bears did tie for 2nd. I think we need to rally and get swankers back into the top spots next time. I'll get the shirts uploaded soon, and more details later. |
I'm filled with admiration for those who braved the weather for MA. Had it been me, I would have melted into the Esplanade like the Wicked With of the West getting hit with a bucket of water.
|
I take it for granted how gratifying it is to always know our scores the evening of the game, whereas the vast majority of people have to wait several days.
It may be embassassing, but as a Masters team, our scores are announced at the awards presentation. And before that ... well, our scores were always announced since we placed each and every time we played. Which leaves me with the meaningless of scoring Brother Bear as "would have come in 2nd" or "would have come in first." Perhaps they might have, but they're not competing. And my point is that neither are we. The Denton Affair has long since ceased to play our "competitive" game, and yesterday in the energy-sapping heat was a prime example. We did not push ourselves to do anything besides play the quests in a relaxed and devil-may-care fashion. Not that we have any illusions of being able to beat the likes of Brother Bear nowadays. But out-of-competition is out-of-competition. And out of mouseadventure is where i may be. The quests were very good and fun, but the weather was miserable and, too often, that seems to be the case with MA. Yep, I'm too old. Though I drank plenty of water, I started feeling very ill in the last 90 minutes. I'm seriously done playing in 90+ degree heat. |
*searching for all of iSm's MA YAGEs through the years*
|
Quick hits:
Best Main Street quests ever. Eye Spys seemed more fun to me (even though we didn't find very many, as usual). They gave us pics of letters from various signs, so it was easier to look for just signs. The trivia on the Mark Twain was well timed. We just barely got them done in time to disembark. We usually don't do the Twain dealio but this time got a chance. I swear, next time, we're going to ToonTown first. No more ToonTown at 2:30pm. No MORE! :p There were some lovely tricky ones, like the Periodic Table of Characters, that took try after try, but when you get it right it's so damn sweet. I still hate the ones you can't be sure you are right on. You have to pick a Goofy Water color and hope you did all the math right. Of course, since you only did it once and wrote down an answer, it was wrong. later... |
We were lame to do Main Street first along with everyone else. No more Main Street at 9am. We had to go back later to look for something we missed, and it was so much easier with a deserted Main Street at 2:30 when the Happy Haunts will be anywhere but ToonTown.
|
The Main St. quest was my favorite. We buzzed along quite nicely throughout the day and were doing quite well until the very end. TSI was closed for us (I'm not crying over that one). We ended up with 2 quests at the end of the day that were word scrambles that were frustrating. Plus, we were hot, tired, and in Toon Town. So, after a pretty successful day, it ended on a less satisfying note.
Bottom line for me is - I can't play in that kind of heat any more. What would've been fun is just not fun when it is so hot. I find that the bloom is really off both the park and the game. Maybe it's time to retire for good. |
Yep, that's it exactly. Bunch of fun quests made lots less fun because it was wilting heat.
If we were still "in play," we would have pushed ourselves into a hospital visit ... but with no competition for us, we really felt the effects of temps approaching 100 degrees. The latter quests were potentially just as fun as the earlier ones (it was a very well designed game this time), but the second half of the game was murder on me. And I was surprised how much concentration and brain power I lacked when my body temperature matched the air temparature. |
I was not into it this time around. It felt like the last MA was only 6 weeks ago, rather than 6 months. The 97˚ weather didn't help. The game felt like such a chore. I think belleh5 & I are gonna skip the next few MAs. I sure as hell don't want to play the one in Florida in 2009. No way I'm gonna spend my money to go running around Magic Kingdom (a theme park I don't like) in 130˚ heat & humidity.
Feh! |
Believe me, we'd love to be able to say "it's too hot this weekend, let's do it next weekend instead."
You'll be happy to read this sentence in yesterdays AP weather story: Quote:
|
I agree it was too damn hot but I had fun because I played with some good friends. We weren't killing ouselves to get things done but we tried to get organized and let that take us thru the game.
We did ToonTown first because it get's very hot out there in a place with no trees and tons of kids after Noon. We took time to sit and go over things. In the end, I doubt I would like to play again in the heat. WDW would be fun but only in a nice 70 degree rainstorm. :) Oh, and next time we should get a team name and maybe a mascot. |
Quote:
We tried to do the TSI quest first for much the same reasons, that island gets hot and crowded. We left the ballroom, broke off from the main herd to cut through the Grand Cal, read our packets as we went, and decided on TSI as our first stop. I guess the staff hadn't counted on us moving that quickly because we got onto TSI and there was no staff member there to give us the quest. That was kind of a crappy start. Turned out to not matter much thanks to the closure later in the day, but it did waste a good 20-30 minutes for us. But yeah, ToonTown first will be our new mantra. We didn't end up back there until around 1:30. Biiiig mistake. Our other kinda big mistake was not bothering to ride HM to get the missing name needed to finish the quest. We were right there, the line was short. But it just seemed like a huge chunk of time to spend, and I wasn't even sure I'd get the right answer even if I had ridden it (I've never bothered to get proficient at that particular type of logic puzzle...which is stupid because the MA writers seem to love 'em. I think I'd better get on that). But we really should have just gone ahead and done it. In the end we weren't rushed for time. The heat didn't really seem to get to me much. Maybe it was because we did get a lot done early and were able to slow the pace down during the hottest part of the day, or maybe the breeze that kept flipping our quest pages softened the scorching blow, but yesterday didn't stand out as all that uncomfortably hot. That's probably still reserved for a couple of those DCA events. I LOVED the Main Street quests ("Disneyland/Not Disneyland" and the hotel story one). Really clever, and led to a bizarre moment of synchronicity. After we found the "Snow Owl Peaches" in the Market House window, we stepped aside to write the answer down and figure out the next step. While we stood there, a family passes behind us. It wasn't too long after we had spotted the crate, but long enough that it's not like these people saw us pointing at it or heard us talking about it. But a little girl looked in the window and asked, "Mom, what are Snow Owl Peaches?" |
|
Lol, CP!;)

As always, brilliant shirts!

It was way too hot!! I'm gonna skip the next few MA's. I'm still sore from running all over the park and my feet are sunburnt. It was good to see everyone briefly, but I don't plan on coming back until Xmas (if it's not too hot). |
Love the shirts!
|
I posted this at MousePad, but thought I'd share here as well. I sought to quantify just how bad it is with MouseAdventure so often being on unusually hot days.
The results were not what I expected. Only 1/3rd of MouseAdventures have been held on days that were warmer than the historical average for that date. However, three of the times they've been over, it has been way over (twice by more than 20 degrees). A cherished myth shattered. But good support for why I hold personal perception (particularly by an emotionally involved group) in so little esteem as support for the reality of something. I'm sure I'll bring this up in some future discussion. Particularly ironic, to me, is that the first seven MAs were actually all cooler than average and yet we developed the idea from them. While four of the last five have been warmer than average and I think the perception has been that the days (other than this last one) were generally more temperate than in the past. ![]() |
What about a comparison to temperatures of the surrounding days/week? I think that's added to the perception, the fact that the MA days are (if memory serves, which it clearly doesn't) hotter than the days leading up to and following.
|
Yes, sorry Alex, but we humans are not cognizant of the historical average. It means zip to us. We get used the rapidly-changing seasons of Southern California (i.e., June now is not what June was like 10 years ago). And we base our subconscious expectations on the current season we are experiencing.
Regardless, it's all perception. And mine has had it. Thanks for the AP info that Anaheim tied for hottest spot in the nation at 102. I won't be doing that anymore. I have no problem bowing out Day Of based on the actual weather, but I can't do that to my teammates ... so I will just be sitting out future Spring MouseAdventures. I'll keep trying in October. Plus, with my all-too-human perception that time goes faster as we age, MA once-a-year is plenty often enough. |
I would actually be more interested in the ACTUAL temperatures on each day. Just because the actual temperature is 2 degrees under normal for that day doesn't mean that 94 degrees isn't freaking roasting*.
* And I have no idea what the actual temperatures have been - I am just pulling a number out of my arse. |
Quote:
|
I'm not at all saying that we are wrong to think it is hot. We're not. It generally is. What was surprisingly wrong is the perception that it is generally hotter than normal. I don't have the actual numbers here at work but I can say say that the median game day high for MouseAdventure is in the upper 70s.
And regardless, this last Sunday was beyond the pale (28 degrees above average high for April 13). GD: I did look at that, at least with day before and day after, and there was no significant trend. Game day was randomly warmer and cooler than the day before and after. A couple times it was significant but generally it was just a degree or two. If I have time (and am still interested) I'll extend that out to a week tonight. |
The heat didn't help. But we just sucked. Nothing ever quite jelled.
|
I'm just hoping the Fall one is on a date we can do it. I'm getting sick of having to miss every other one.
|
So Alex, what you're saying is that they've just historically chosen a bad date to hold MA? ;)
|
Not really, the average high for pretty much every day in in March/April and October/November is pretty much "low 70s" and pretty much that's where we've been with a couple major outliers.
I think what we have done wrong is historically we've chosen a bad state in which to hold MA. |
Merry Christmas - MA date announced
Ha we had nicer cooler weather in Vegas on Sunday than you guys had for MA....funny when we left yesterday it was 96 degrees out but we were in nice air conditioning...that's why i won't ever do a MA again with the heat...
|
Sydney's nice this time of year.
|
Alex, love the bar graph. Since you already have the info - can we have the temps, please? I'd like to see how much variation there is between spring and fall MAs. I doubt they're much different.

I have a left-over 1-day pass tentatively set aside for the fall MA, but might have to round up a new team. This is, of course, contingent on my employment status and domicile at the time. Oh, and snow is in the forecast for the weekend here. |
Woo hoo 14! Compared to how badly I thought we sucked - not as sucky as I thought.
|
I'm afraid to look.
|
|
It's offical we suck!! 30th place. I hate the heat!! Zapp & I will not be playing until Fall 2010.
|
Awww, we got 11th this year. :)
|
How many points was the chemistry one worth? We got it right, but apparently we were supposed to write the ride that the unscrambled phrase (toadi accelerato) referred to, not the phrase itself, so we didn't get the points for it. And since we weren't playing for keeps anyway, I have no qualms giving myself those theoretical points on that technicality. And had we not beaten the staff to TSI and managed to get the full 70 points early, rather than the consolation 30 points since the island closed...hell, I think that would have put us in 3rd place range, or there abouts! Wow, I feel a LOT better.
|
Chemistry was 50 points.
TSI was 60 points. (which we got right which kind of sucked cause we wasted an hour for a net 30 points). |
Wow, so with the theoretical points we would have been in 4th (3rd highest score). Even keeping the mental-mistake points off and just adding the 30 from TSI we rightly should have received, would have had us in 7th. I'll take a top 10.
|
Well, our sucking was equal-opportunity sucking...we each managed to goof up a big point quest. Of course we had everything we really needed to finish all of them.
I "missed" a rule in the Haunted Mansion quest, then we missed a "K" in writing down a word set in Frontierland, and then we mis-read the directions on the Fantasyland Chemistry quest. I feel better that none of them were beyond our abilities but we just didn't execute them. That would have been 170 points right there, and add that with the net 30 points on the Island quest and it is a huge difference. :( Without the silly mistakes we would have been 3rd. But, alas...we screwed up this one. ;) swanie |
who puts that many K's in a word? I mean seriously - Knickknacks. There shouldn't be two K's in the middle. Who is the Miriam Webster person and how do I file a protest?
|
Oh good - at least we beat the Denton Affair.
Otherwise that would have just been embarrassing. |
Quote:
And you know, there are a few San Diegans that would still love to meet you, should you be searching. |
Eh, I thought we did better than that. Oh well.
|
Quote:
Don't get me wrong, I'd rather MA award just half points for such closures or mishaps. But that's not what they've done in the past. And we've never been one of the teams to benefit from a quest we didn't attempt, but rather were always the team burned who got no point benefit for quests we spent significant time in getting right. |
Quote:
|
Well, at least they told you that in writing up front, as soon as you looked thru the game materials.
But there was no way to know they'd hand out full points for everyone who DIDN'T walk through the Sleeping Beauty Walk-Thru ... and full points for everyone who DIDN'T kill themselves at the Motor Boat Dock with that hellacious protractor map thing ... only to suddenly decide to award only HALF points for everyone who didn't make it to Tom Sawyer Island. Bah. I hereby award the Denton Affair's mythical score an additional mythical 35 points. What does that bring us up to? 17th??? Oh, how the mighty have fallen. But it's nice not having to play for keeps, especially when Anaheim is the second hottest place in the world (or some such bar graph statistic). |

Hey, the one time we played MA, we ran from Tomorrowland to Adventureland holding hands and screaming - some poor woman literally dove to the ground to get out of our way :D
|
TeeHee, and that reminds me, of course, of the time, admittedly after Park closing, that we joined hands and marched down Main Street, literally stretching across the entire width of the street, from building to building, and all the convenience shoppers had to duck and go under.
That was frelling awesome!!! |
MMM is $80/team ($70 if I sign up early). I have to check with Sohrshah and see if she wants to captain her own team or be on mine, but beyond that I have room to form a team. So I have either 1 spot or 3 :)

When is MMM?

Tuesday, May 20th.
