Whenever I hear the Dreidel song during "Believe" I think of CP.
She loves it.

And if you follow the link you'll see that it was at a New York City deli. It's not like it was at some northern Minnesota Food Barn.

Morrigoon 12-04-2007 05:13 PM

Alex: What market was that?

edit: oh, a deli. A DELI??? What kind of goyem deli does THAT?

Chappy Chanukka everyone!!

May Jesus, Jehovah or Bing Crosby bring you lots of gifts.

(I plead uninformed when it comes to Hanukkah, so a bit of humor)

Click the picture, takes you to a blog item that names Balducci's as the culprit.

Morrigoon 12-04-2007 05:39 PM

Ah, an Italian deli. Check.

Bing Crosby? Is he like the Easter Bunny of Festivus or something?

I have now had my annual potatoes. I feel, um, logy. But good.

Cadaverous Pallor 12-04-2007 11:06 PM

Happy Hanukkah, all. :) Lit some candles, called my parents.

We have a menorah at the library that someone donated. Wooden, stands 5 feet tall. I got designated to write up an explainer for staff and patrons alike, and I was entrusted with the blue and white candles. (psst - I'm the only Jew in the building.) No fire of course, but still.

Not Afraid 12-05-2007 12:43 AM

They sell little Hanukkah outfits for dogs at Target as well as squeaky Dreidel plush toys and blue and white bones that say "Kosher" on one side. I didn't buy any because I don't know if Thurston is Jewish or not. ;)

Happy Hannukah!

Nope, but he's being neutered on the 14th. Mommy buys dog toys at retail....does that count?

Happy Hanukkah!

How long does it last? My calendar only lists today as the first day.

Kevy Baby 12-05-2007 06:25 PM

Considering that the holiday commemorates the miracle of oil burning for eight days when was only supposed to burn for one (more enlightened individuals can explain the story better than I), I would say that it ends eight days after today (which would be Wednesday, 12/12).

ETA: According to Wikipedia:
Quote:

Hanukkah, from the Hebrew word for "dedication" or "consecration", marks the re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem after its desecration by the forces of Antiochus IV and commemorates the "miracle of the container of oil." According to the Talmud, at the re-dedication following the victory of the Maccabees over the Seleucid Empire, there was only enough consecrated olive oil to fuel the eternal flame in the Temple for one day. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days, which was the length of time it took to press, prepare and consecrate fresh olive oil.

Morrigoon 12-05-2007 07:23 PM

Olive oil? Seriously? I didn't know that part, cool (about the new oil being able to be made in that time and all that)

The legend of the miracle oil is a later addition to the story, but it's actually the miracle of a small band of Jews defeating the most powerful and technologically advanced army of its time that's the real miracle. (and that is a historical fact.)

blueerica 12-05-2007 11:41 PM

"We're alive! It's a miracle! Let's eat!"

Or so I've heard...

That's actually the summary of many-a-Jewish holiday.

wendybeth 12-06-2007 10:06 AM

I suppose the Catholic faith might be the opposite. You are terrible sinners- starve yourself out of mortification! (And no meat on Fridays). Oh, and since you're saving all that money by fasting, you'll feel a lot less guilty if you kick some of it our way.......

If I were a better Catholic, I might be skinnier.:D

Morrigoon 12-06-2007 10:57 AM

I don't know why, but I keep reading the thread title as "Happy Hanukkah Sweaters!"

...and I'm the bozo that WROTE it!

Shalom!

Are you going to eat all your Hanukkah ham? Because I'll take it if you don't want it.

mousepod 12-06-2007 11:20 AM

Our Disney menorah is in storage, so this year I picked up one that had me giggling for the last two nights:

Each ladybug is made of wood and is attached to the one in front of it with a little ball and loop. I've been adding one ladybug a night...
