Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

I grew up loving the Rankin Bass puppet animated classic. Just heard a story on NPR about how the original Rudolph has been found and restored.

The NPR All Things Considered story will be here after 4:00 Pacfic with I hope before and after photos. He was restored by a puppeteer in LA and will be on display in Chicago and then on to PA.

Going to have to watch this again, netflix if not regular TV.

This story was on CNN the other day, let me see if I can find it.

How TV's 'Rudolph' was Saved

<snip> Two years ago, the figures were acquired by current owner Kevin Kriess. Santa's face was stained, there was mold under his beard and half his mustache was gone. Rudolph was missing the red light bulb from his nose, said Kriess, a longtime fan of the special whose Harmony, Pennslyvania-based business TimeandSpaceToys.com sells action figures and other collectibles based on movies and TV shows.

Kriess, 44, said he bought his two treasures from a person whose family had received them years ago from a relative who worked for Rankin/Bass. For many years, the delicate wood, wire and fabric puppets had been treated casually: first as toys and later as holiday decorations.

"They had Rudolph in a candy dish with candy all around him, just on a coffee table, and people would just reach in around Rudolph's body and pull out a candy cane or something," Kriess said. In the family's holiday photos, you could spot Santa slumped under a tree in a corner, he said. <snip>

My roommate always expresses surprise when I tell him I have never seen this.

How could you possibly escape it?

Of course I've never seen the Wizard of Oz all the way through so it is possible I guess. The monkeys freak me out.

It just wasn't one of those things I ever saw as a kid!!! I've seen photographs of it, and isn't there one with that Jack Frost character too (my cousin has a bobblehead of him)? I dunno. I think I only saw "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" as an adult too.

Really, my favorite Christmas movies are "Christmas Vacation" and "A Christmas Story", which I used to watch with my brother every year as a kid. But never the other ones. We were always with the rest of the Jews eating Chinese food and going to the movies on Xmas (yes, I know that is a total cliche, but we really SERIOUSLY do that every year).

I can't stand it anymore. Is your avatar supposed to look like Bjork is eating a piece of poop?

Morrigoon 12-07-2007 03:07 PM

We must resolve this issue

You can't be - you're not his roommate.

You know the person who produced his new DVD website.

On a totally, wholly, completely unrelated note, I am feeling a little sad that I am not planning to watch it this year. (Overexposure.)

I'm sure each Jew has a hole in their Xmas viewing. I didn't see "It's a Wonderful Life" until I was 19 or so, and I've never seen most of the other full length classics like "Miracle on 34th St." But Rudolph, Frosty, the Grinch, Charlie Brown...those were all must-watch opportunities for the whole family. Weird. I think my parents were ok with Xmas when it was in a cartoon...

^^ Awww crap. Should I take down my chichis?

I think the thing in her mouth was an olive or a prune. I'm looking at a larger pic of it, and it's all shiny. So unless she's been eating polyurethane, it isn't a poo :P

Morrigoon 12-07-2007 05:27 PM

I thought it was a candy

Kevy Baby 12-07-2007 06:24 PM

Poop candy?

ETA: Dang, another weird web site find: Poop Candy (AKA Chocka Ca-Ca)

Alex 12-07-2007 08:30 PM

I don't think I've seen since I was 8 or so and have no real memory of it. But that is pretty much true of all the Christmas specials.

CoasterMatt 12-08-2007 02:18 AM

Rose made a Rudolph at Build A Bear tonight, and we went all over Disneyland with his nose lit up - it was especially fun at Big Thunder and Matterhorn, where it lit the caves a little bit.
