People who don't do their work irritate me
I have a presentation to do today for sales and marketing, support, and training on some new stuff I've developed for our system that's supopsed to be released in early January.
Yesterday afternoon I discovered a design flaw - nothing major and relatively easy to fix - that required some changes, including to the data dictionary. The design guy told me he would make the changes to the update database. The DBA told me that last night he would apply the changes from the update database to the development database so I could get the programs done in time for the 12:30 meeting. So I came in at 4:00 this morning to ensure that I could get everything done in time. No big deal, everyone has to do that sometimes. Except I came in and either the design guy didn't put the changes in the update database or the DBA didn't apply those changes to the development database. So I can't do my work. And I came in at 4:00. So I took a nap on the development couch. I have no idea when the DBA will be in to apply those changes (if they are even there to apply), so I propbably won't have everything done I need to for my presentation. That sucks. |
I hate it when others don't do their work, too.
It seems to be the story of my life.... Hope your day gets better! |

Scaeagles, that sucks. There are some coworkers that I know I have to keep tabs on, or I'll be screwed.
I sure hope nobody hates me enough to give me the beep thing. We have a few devices at the library that beep and I hate them. Every fiber in my being is triggered into action to destroy whatever is beeping. SHUT IT UP, SHUT IT UP!!! I'd probably tear apart my workspace within a half-hour to find the thing. |
It was the design guy. Development manager checked and the new databse fields aren't in the update database. I'm really, really pissed to the point of almost saying I'm sick and just going home. I have 3 hours till my meeting and he isn't in yet.
I even reminded him a couple of times yesterday. |
Ugh, sca... Ugh!
Some people are just truly inconsiderate. Though I can understand that something might not be as important to the person that's being asked, I hate it when people offer to do something that they can't do for whatever reason. And then proceed to not do it without letting me know so that I can fix/handle the problem in another way. Hate it, hate it, hate it. Looooooove the "present" linked above... hehe. Evil, indeed! |
I used to share a cube wall with pass the buck guy. His line was "I could help you but a better person to ask would be _______ ".
That sucks when other people hold up your project. |

Oh, and I would just like to add, that a thread titled "People who don't do their work irritate me" is seriously adding to my guilt level. Could you possibly change that to "People who don't do their work irritate me but only if they are not using that extra time to contribute to the LoT community".
That would make me feel better. |
I tried but the "revised" thread title is too long. ;)

I try so hard not to be a control freak. But in work situations, I simply must take total control if things are to be done, done on time, and done properly.
"If you want something done right, do it yourself" has always been my motto. I hate being that way, but too often when I leave things in the hands of others, those hands are either idle or incompetent. Of course, when you are depending on work totally outside your sphere of ability ... you are at other people's mercy. A potentially bad bad situation that I always seek to avoid. I often wonder if I'm a "do it yourself" kinda guy because it's never done "right" by others, or if it never seems to be done "right" by others because I'm a "do it yourself" kinda guy. I may never know which chicken came before which egg, but I wish I could rely on others more often than it seems I can. |
I'm in agreement with iSm.
If someone else must do what I need, I've gotten in the habit of giving earlier deadlines than necessary. "I've got a lot more work to do on this project so I need this in the next hour. Thanks." It's so hard to set a hard line but it usually works well. If the deadline is early enough, they can be late and it's still great. |
I can't wait to be freed from the forced grouping with incompetent imbeciles... it ends in 3.5 hours.
Then I get real-world imbeciles. :) ETA: I do what CP does and it's helped out a lot, even in group situations that have been less-than-favorable. For example, for my B2B Marketing class, for our final project, we broke the research and writing into 4 groups, with me doing the editing and "cohesion" stuff. So... homeboy decides to engage in some heavy-duty plagiarizing, which I caught simply because I had the time to do additional research. Early deadlines, as I have learned, not only help get things done on time, it is also gives extra time in the event that someone f*cks up. |
Meeting deadlines is a pet peave of mine. I had my previous unit well trained when it came to deadlines. I'm still working on the new one. I have two people who have yet to come to the realization that deadlines are not suggestions. They'll learn....

As my high school journalism teacher put it - (he'd draw a line on the blackboard) "this is a line, you cross it you're dead". Some people just never get it.
The best was a few years ago when I did the yearbook for Maddy's school. The other mom "helping" me actually told me that we did not need to get anything to the printers by the specified dates as we were paying them to print it they could wait  |
My job is getting vendors to do things. Sometimes it feels like my head is going to explode.

So how did the story end? Did it get fixed for the presentation, did you soft shoe it, are you in the market for a new job, are the police now looking for you?
|
Got most of the functionality working.....the people in the meeting mostly just talked about what they wanted changed rather than seeing what it did. Sigh.
I hate meetings. |
Software designer by committee? Sounds like something I need to avoid.

Sadly, we are moving toward the agile development methodology. I have long thought this was created by people who didn't want to be thorough in design.

Software release day.
On Dec 21, I was 90% done with my major project. I had a meeting that afternoon. I am now only 20% done with my project. I have had to recode almost the entire thing. And I came across another flaw which caused another (admittedly minor - maybe 6 hours of work????) redesign only about an hour ago. Don't think I'm meeting my deadline today. |

I keep running into people who don't understand a process and therefore decide it must be simple. Then start basing critical decisions on that assumption.

The running joke here at the office is that everything takes only 5 minutes (at least according to our boss).
