Calling all Browncoats

Seeing as we've hijacked sweet CP's thread, and not wanting to ruffle any feathers or get shoved out an airlock, let's have us our own thread for Browncoat roll-call and news of the verse.

(And if you don't know what a Browncoat is or haven't yet been introduced to the world of Firefly or Serenity, then get yourself over to Netflix or just go buy the DVDs 'cuz there's no doubt in my mind you'll get hooked on it.)

LSPoorEeyorick 12-20-2007 06:02 PM

I love that gorram 'verse.

And all Whedonverse shows, actually. I'm excited for Dollhouse next year.

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 12-20-2007 06:30 PM

Mmm, big stupid hunky Jayne. How I love that moron. Heh.

Very happy that so many of their careers are on the up and up. Unlike the Buffy crew. Aside from A.H., fizzle! And D.B. seems the only real survivor from Angel.

blueerica 12-20-2007 06:32 PM

<-- Full-on Whedon fan here, which is actually how I came about Firefly and Serenity.

I should try and pick up some DVDs... I haven't watched it since the show was (briefly) on the air oh so many years ago...

innerSpaceman 12-20-2007 06:59 PM

So, has word fizzled that there was going be a second movie?

I loved me that Firefly. Amazing first season. And since you look back at the first season or two of most shows you love and go 'WTF??' - it's even more amazing that the show was that good from the get-go .... and so sad that it would have inevitably gotten much, much better.

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 12-20-2007 07:03 PM

And it wasn't even a full season. I'll never quite forgive Fox for airing the intial episodes out of order because they didn't think the pilot episode was exciting enough.

And it was a GREAT first episode. Bastards. Heh.

alphabassettgrrl 12-20-2007 07:22 PM

I need to watch these episodes again. We have seen a few episodes, but out of order, and anytime they repeat 'em, it seems they repeat the same two.

Hot women who can kick butt. What's not to love? :)

Alex 12-20-2007 07:40 PM

Love Firefox but not much of a Whedon fan otherwise.

I haven't ever heard anything solid about a second movie but I certainly wouldn't mind.

JWBear 12-20-2007 07:48 PM

Reporting for duty, Captain Tightpants sir!

mousepod 12-20-2007 07:52 PM

I really like that Whedon is comfortable using the medium of comics to continue his cancelled TV shows. He bridged the span between Firefly and Serenity with "Those Left Behind." Lately, I've been enjoying Buffy: Season Eight.

Stan4dSteph 12-20-2007 08:04 PM

The Collector's Edition of Serenity on DVD is on sale at Amazon for $8.99 right now.

Not Afraid 12-20-2007 09:06 PM

I feel like I woke up in an alternate universe. WTF?

That's an insane price! Too bad I already bought it.

So, I have a confession to make that I'm not really ashamed to admit. I have a man-crush on Nathan Fillion. He just so totally rocks. I was even willing to see him in Waitress (didn't care much for the movie, but of course Nathan was awesome). I hate that Fox screwed him (and Tim Minear) over once again when they cancelled Drive. Stupid Fox...again!

Anyway, over the summer a local movie theater (Mission Theater in downtown Portland) was showing all the Firefly episodes. They did the same thing for Buffy and Arrested Development. It was so fun to be able to watch Firefly with a theater packed full of Browncoats. I also got to attend Portland's Can't Stop the Serenity screening which was also really fun.

blueerica 12-20-2007 10:51 PM

Oh, see! That's the thing I loved about the cemetery screenings... being able to see my favorite movies (many of which I saw solo, considering most were "classics") with other people. Being able to watch Buffy with others would be... perhaps too much... but awesome, and I'd have to do it.

Gemini Cricket 12-20-2007 11:05 PM

I'd sleep with Jayne... and the Captain... and the doctor...and Wash...

CoasterMatt 12-20-2007 11:20 PM

I got to sit on a vehicle from Serenity, but I have no idea what it was called.

I've enjoyed the Faith arc best, because it was written by Vaughn (of Y the Last Man) instead of the TV staff writers. Great writers, but Vaughn seems to have his hand firmly in both writing styles (he wrote for LOST, as well) and gets the pacing of panel writing. Whedon has a tendency to pace his comic books like tv shows, complete with commercial interruptions. V also seemed to nail the character's voices. The first arc in the Season 8 series felt really off to me, and I think it's because the writers underestimated how much the actors brought to their roles. Reading the Faith arc, the characters felt inhabited, had weight. Very cool.

Totally missed the Firefly book. Hmmm.

I love a man who can admit to having a man crush, especially when it's a man crush on Captain Hot Pants Fillion.

My company worked on the Slither website. First, I love James Gunn, who wrote and directed Slither. And I also love the people in the cast, primarily Fillion and Elizabeth Banks (I have a girl crush on Elizabeth Banks). It was a dream to attend the premiere and after party, because I got to see some favorite celebrity types, including James Gunn (who I was too embarrassed to talk to), Joss Whedon (who I was too embarrassed to talk to), Sig Haig (who I wasn't too embarrassed to talk to, which seemed to make him uncomfortable) and Nathan Fillion. Ordinarily, I'd be way too shy to talk to a stranger that friggin' charismatic and handsome. He is just as (if not more) good looking in person. Tall and manly, by George! But I had two scotches on an empty stomach, so was feeling very brave.

I interrupted a conversation he was having with two other people. He was talking about how another actor in the movie stole the film and had all the funny lines, and the two people were disagreeing with him. "Oh, no, you were so great! So funny! The best thing in the movie."

And he said, "No, no. I'm fine with it, but he really did steal the show."

And I looked at him as I stuffed a chip in my mouth (at events where I don't know many people, I tend to stick by the chip bowl and/or bar) and said, "Oh, he *totally* did."

And he grinned wide, grabbed both my arms with his manly Nathan Fillion hands, and said, "Finally, honesty! He was great, right?!"

My brain pretty much filled up with, "Nathan Fillion is touching me. Grabbing me, even! Throw me down on the floor, Nathan Fillion! Show these people what you're really good for!"

And then he was gone and I was left, once again, at the chip bowl.

If I concentrate really hard, I can still smell him.

Gemini Cricket 12-21-2007 10:33 AM

I hear that Nathan Fillion is a big hugger, toucher kind of guy. I likes that.
:)

OMG, Nathon Fillion did that to you?!?!?!

If I had known ... I would have been too embarrassed to talk to you.

No, he grabbed my arms. I wished he was doing more. You are confusing me! Why are you confusing me?!

And this was after we'd already met, iSm.

innerSpaceman 12-21-2007 01:57 PM

Don't be confused. Have you ever noticed that two people standing right next to each other often have an entirely different experience of what happened? "Reality" is completely subjective.

If you so strongly experienced Nathan throwing you to the ground that you can discern his manly scent even now, who's to say that didn't really happen??

I love you. You make (even my past dreams) come true.

Pirate Bill 12-21-2007 02:39 PM

Eliza, I have never been as envious and jealous of another person as I am of you right now. But, my envy aside, that's an awesome story!

blueerica 12-21-2007 05:32 PM

<-- green.

So. Green. With a side of envy.

Chernabog 12-22-2007 01:28 AM

I love Nathan Fillion, even in Slither and on Desperate Housewives. He maketh my heart go piddypat!

€uroMeinke 12-22-2007 02:21 AM

I keep seeing brown shirts and am surprised to see so many Nazi sympathizers on the board

innerSpaceman 12-22-2007 09:30 AM

No, no, no .... we're United Parcel Service admirers.

Yum, the legs on those guys!

alphabassettgrrl 12-25-2007 10:41 PM

I've seen some really hot UPS women. And if she works for UPS she's strong, too............ gotta love it.

Pirate Bill 12-26-2007 12:19 PM

Does everyone listen to Firefly Talk? In the most recent episode (#60, Dec. 22) we get to learn a little more about Shepherd Book's mysterious background.

If you've been listening to Firefly Talk and/or The Signal (or other similar podcasts) you're probably familiar with the constant questions Ron Glass gets asked at conventions and in interviews about Book's background. But since he never knew anything more about Book than what was in the scripts, he never had a satisfactory answer. So he asked Joss for more info and this is what Joss faxed over to him.

1. There will be a Dark Horse Comic released next year about Book called The Shepherd's Tale
2. A part of Shepherd Book is artificial
3. He found God in a bowl of soup
4. Book is best known for his greatest failure
5. "Derrial" is not his real name. He took that name from a man he killed.

Of course, these "answers" just bring up more questions. I'm looking forward to the comic.

Moonliner 05-20-2014 09:49 AM

I'm a tad late to the party, but I'm watching Firefly for the first time.

Initial impression: Damn space is crowded. They keep running into stuff everywhere......

The population density of their civilization must be astronomical.

Cadaverous Pallor 05-20-2014 10:15 AM

Hah, I became a Browncoat a couple years ago. Love reading this thread now! Eliza's Fillion story is epic!!

Moonliner 05-20-2014 10:17 AM

I'm just a few episodes in, I'm sure it will take me a long long time to get caught up. What season are they on now?

Shh don't tell him (she whispered to nobody).

Enjoy every second.

Moonliner 05-21-2014 05:33 PM

Is it wrong that I watched the first episode and kept saying to myself, Ohh! It's Captain Hammer!

Why do I suddenly feel like Olaf?

Alex 05-21-2014 10:03 PM

Then you'll have to watch 6 seasons of Castle to catch the occasional Firefly joke.

I'd say stop watching right now. Watch Serenity, then return to the show. (No, don't really do that, unless you're fond of leaves and wind.)

Another hater of Fox Television in 3, 2...

Moonliner 06-06-2014 11:59 AM

After a few slow episodes, the series seems to be hitting it's stride with "Trash".

Things I have Googled today:

Firefly SR-71

Ice Planet.

Not surprisingly there are numerous pages on both of these.
