New Monorail is on the beam today

http://travel.latimes.com/daily-deal-blog/?p=1147

Perty, ain't it?

NickO'Time 12-20-2007 11:21 PM

Yes it is indeed! Very sleek.:D

Gemini Cricket 12-20-2007 11:39 PM

It looks like a large lipstick.

Not Afraid 12-20-2007 11:41 PM

Does it vibrate?

CoasterMatt 12-20-2007 11:45 PM

I wanna know if they still call the suspension system "gummipuffers"

This one has a few closer shots

NIIIICE!

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 12-20-2007 11:52 PM

Well, hopefully when DCA is fixed up, the Monorail will go thru a giant Vagina in the Hollywood section.

Isaac 12-21-2007 12:01 AM

About time!

CoasterMatt 12-21-2007 12:02 AM

You get to ride in February.

innerSpaceman 12-21-2007 12:19 AM

I'm sorry they couldn't put the bubble back ... but these are, imo, so much prettier than the generic brand monorails that took over from the old classics.

Hazzah, and finally!

keith - SuPeR K! 12-21-2007 05:05 AM

That looks so rad :) I'm the most excited!

Kevy Baby 12-21-2007 08:24 AM

From the bottom of the LA Times article:

Quote:

Brady MacDonald Says:
December 20th, 2007 at 9:28 pm
MiceAge columnist David “Darkbeer” Michael posted a 100-photo gallery of the new monorail’s arrival:

http://darkbeer.smugmug.com/gallery/4027522#234423982

MousePlanet staff writer Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix posted about a dozen Mark VII shots from a different vantage point:

wolfy999 12-21-2007 08:55 AM

Hopefully!

Was hoping for the bubble that was in the conception art, but OK, I'll settle for this.

Cadaverous Pallor 12-21-2007 09:22 AM

Did you notice - they said the seats will face the windows. Cool.

It's very shiny indeed.

BarTopDancer 12-21-2007 09:34 AM

Prettyful!

innerSpaceman 12-21-2007 09:35 AM

I can't help thinking that bench seating along the sides means less passenger capacity.

I could be wrong, of course, but hmmmmm.

The more stylized and prominent nosecone, however, looks like where WE should ride all the time.

Can He Who Does Not Post introduce us to any of the crop of new monorail pilots???

My worry is that it will relegate you to being able to see out of only one side. With the current seating, I know you hardly have a wonderful view out of the opposite side of the train, but at least you can lean forward and see something. If I'm sitting with my back to one side of the train, that seems like it'd be even harder.

But the body styling is fab.

Morrigoon 12-21-2007 10:39 AM

SHINY!

I like that it doesn't depart too much from the style of the Mark IVs, which I have always adored.

It's like if you handed the Mark IVs to a 50's car enthusiast and said "paint this".

Not Afraid 12-21-2007 10:47 AM

It's very lovely!

Are monorail pilots really known for their canoe boy good looks? All fresh-faced, right outta monorail school, chipper and ready to play with the controls?

Morrigoon 12-21-2007 11:50 AM

Well, suffice it to say, they know how to drive the train into the Roundhouse, if you know what I mean ;)

Ghoulish Delight 12-21-2007 11:55 AM

I wounder how long before they cover that gorgeous paint job with some ridiculous marketing overlay.

Motorboat Cruiser 12-21-2007 12:09 PM

Well, this should pretty much ensure that our passes don't remain expired for too much longer. Can't have these babies gliding around the park without being able to check them out.

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 12-21-2007 12:13 PM

I cannot mojo NA. DAMN.

Hot monorail. Hot, hot, hot.

But not as hot as Coaster Matt's icon. Hello Cthulhu, I love you!

Finally, something good comes from replacing the parking lot with DCA.

Yes, one side's view will suck (even moreso in Tomorrowland than in the Esplanade ... but at least there will be something to look at there besides finding your own car).

From the article in the OC Register:

Bench seats will face the windows, allowing visitors a full view of the parks, Downtown Disney and the Disneyland Hotel. The capacity and speed will remain the same.

CoasterMatt 12-22-2007 12:41 AM

I know a few VERY happy owners of Sybians. They're kinda like a monorail, of sorts.

A real people mover

Ghoulish Delight 04-23-2008 01:17 PM

I caught a news crawl on a tv during lunch that said the new train would be making its public debut on Friday. Any truth to this?

BarTopDancer 04-23-2008 01:26 PM

Depends what station you were watching and what your political leanings are.

:D

Gn2Dlnd 04-23-2008 01:26 PM

It's been out and about since yesterday, according to Darkbeer's photos on MiceAge.

I saw it in '96.

innerSpaceman 04-23-2008 02:52 PM

Sigh, it looks so like the old classic ... that I am both thrilled and made so sad by the absence of the bubble.

Ah, there was nothing quite like riding in the bubble. Le Deep Sigh.

wendybeth 04-23-2008 03:57 PM

We never did get a pic of it during testing, but I got a blurry shot of this one at night:

It was cool having it go right under our room. (I'm still working on getting the pics up from our trip, but will post a link when I do.)

Isaac 04-23-2008 04:22 PM

The new monorail was operating earlier today. They had signs up in the DTD station, letting guests know that the new monorail is still being tested but will open to the public next month.

I spoke w/ a CM that rode the train earlier today. He said it's "very bumpy" when you get into Tomorrowland, as you pass above the Autopia. Monorail Red is supposed to be open to the public by Memorial Day weekend but the CM doubts it.

He also confirmed that the new Monorail Blue is in the roundhouse. It arrived about a week ago.

innerSpaceman 04-23-2008 04:31 PM

Crickey, didn't Bob Gurr have a son who could knock some sense into this?

Ghoulish Delight 04-23-2008 04:37 PM

Gurr was responsible for the look, don't think he had much to do with the specifics of the engineering.

DUDE! Label your NSFW!

(I made the mistake of clicking on this one...)

innerSpaceman 04-23-2008 05:28 PM

Au contraire. I'm not sure about the monorail in particular, but Gurr did the actual engineering on a good deal of Disneyland transportation vehicles.

I'm pretty sure the monorail, however, was bought lock, stock and barrel from the German Alweg company. But I believe Gurr would have been in charge of making sure it properly fit and smoothly traveled the beamway, without parts falling off or other mishaps.

Sheesh.

I think you are correct regarding the Mark I, I believe he did design the Mark III based on this article. This series of articles is fascinating if you've never read them before.

oh.

I think he was implying that your tube had been seen on YouTube, but I think XTube would be more likely.

innerSpaceman 04-27-2008 07:09 PM

I should have done some gay porn while I could have made some $ at it.

My package is, after all .... alarming. :iSm:

Gn2Dlnd 04-27-2008 08:52 PM

At the risk of completely derailing (de-beaming?) this thread, I'm sure if you strapped on enough leather you could make just as much $ as a daddy as you could have when you were a twink.

Not that I know what any of those words mean.

Use it well.

MouseWife 04-28-2008 04:40 PM

How did this thread de-rail?

I won't ask for proof about the package but in all honesty, I am curious. But, that is as far as that goes.

That sure looks pretty. I thought I'd missed it, from the earlier posts, it looked like it debuted months ago.

My passes expired some time ago...I think it is about time to renew them...when is that tax rebate coming?

um, no no no, sir. The alarming package is quite pretty. Ask anyone.

It's the BD camping surprise that may or may not be pretty. It's too shocking to get that far.

LOL Ha! I didn't realize I set myself up there!!

LOL Like, when was the debut? ;)

Oh, I am wondering about that BD....I was telling the Hubster about the swanky camp out and he sounded interested. {he loves to cook, and, would LOVE to partake in the cooking but especially the eating...no, actually not especially, he really enjoys cooking...}

I did have to tell him it is an adult group, no kids. Unfreakin' believable, it didn't sway him!! But, I have to check the dates.....he actually has a job.

Oh, I hope we are getting money back. I have spent it in my head already!!!
We are supposedly todays group {or one of the first groups, perhaps not today} but nada yet....haven't told the son he isn't getting anything because we claimed him.

He really is interested in the cooking part. Egads, I haven't told him about the BD!!!! LOL We were talking about our upcoming housekeeping camp trip and thinking about some wonderful meals to cook but then we just said forget it, too much trouble.

ooooh, I just thought of a question to post at the camp thread....

Al posted this earlier today:

Quote:

Editor's Note 4/28 Special Update: Daytime testing of Disneyland's new monorail red train is off until later this week at the earliest. The suspension issues aren't that big an issue, but visitors were complaining as they were waiting for the lone operating train to come back while a shiny new one zipped by unused. CM's tried to explain, but hotel guests in particular were still unhappy they couldn't ride on what looked to be a perfectly good train. In light of concerns and short tempers at both stations, and some complaints at the hotel front desks, daytime testing is off until they are certain they are only days away from getting the new train signed off. - Al Lutz
