New puter and I can't play with it
So, I picked up my new puter on the way home today. Just a basic iMac with wireless KB & Mouse. But I can't play with it yet.
Why? Because I can't remember the password to my freakin' network!!!! I know it is eight characters. I've tried everything I can think of (including caps lock on) to figure it out. So far, no luck. AArrrggh I am worried the only way out of this is to go buy a new router. (BTW: if anyone wants to make a suggestion, it is a Linksys Wireless router.) Thankfully I have not disconnected the old one yet. |
Didn't wait long, did you?
Gratz. |

See what happens when you go Mac? Evil follows.

Otherwise pop a hard reset to factory defaults and reconfigure that bad boy. |
That's what I was going to say - hard reset - then make a new password. And write it down somewhere. ;)

Oh, I hate this kind of problem.
So, I did a hard reset of the router. Set it with WEP security. Entered the code on the new Mac and all was fine there. Except now the Tivo (which runs through the network) and the old Mac didn't want to see the network. After some fiddling around, reset the router again and everything saw the router. Cool. Put WEP protection back on. New Mac sees the network but the old Mac and Tivo once again won't. Don't ask me what made me think of this, but I turned the wireless card off on the new Mac. Old Mac and Tivo can now see the network. Then, I turned the wireless card back on in the new Mac. Old mac and Tivo stay connected. Hmm.... |
Did you make sure that the router on your TiVO can use WEP encryption? I know the Linksys router I tried wanted a specific type of encryption (I can't remember if it is WEP or WPA).

What wireless protocols are the various devices running? It's possible that the new Mac is running a faster protocol (either g or n) and the router is detecting that and switching to the higher speed mode, leaving it incommunicado as far as the slower devices are concerned. Go into your router and make sure it's set to compatibility mode (something like "b AND g" or "b, g, AND n").

So far, everything is working okay since I did the earlier off then on of the New Mac's Airpoort card. |
As much as I like this wireless keyboard, I really miss having the 10-key, Page Up and Page Down, Home and End keys.

I'm researching if the TIVO branded card has the same restrictions. Quote:

If I remember correctly, TiVo started supporting WPA about a year ago.

Well, I set up my network with WEP and the Tivo sees it just fine (event tested it for this post).
