Here's to our Jewish friends at christmastime from South Park:
It's hard to be a Jew on Christmas My Friends won't let me join in any games.. And I can't sing Christmas songs Or decorate a Christmas tree.. Or leave water out for Rudolph 'cause there's something wrong with me.. My people don't believe in Jesus Christ's divinity.. I'm a Jew, a lonely Jew.. on Christmas. Hanukkah is nice, but why is it, That Santa passes over my house every year? And instead of eating Ham I have to eat Kosher Latkes.. Instead of Silent Night I'm singing hey-hach-dol-gavish.. And what the f**k is up With lighting all these f**king Candles, tell me please? I'm a Jew, a lonely Jew.. I can't be merry, 'cause i'm Hebrew.. on Christmas. Hey Little Boy, I can't help but hear, You're feeling left out of Christmas Cheer.. But i've come to see that you shouldn't be sad This is the one month that you shoud be glad.. Because it's nice to be a Jew on Christmas You don't have to deal with the season at all.. You don't have to be on your best behavior, or give to charity You don't have to go to grandma's house with your alcoholic family.. And I don't have to sit on some fake Santa's lap And have him breathe his stinky breath on me! That's right! You're a Jew, a stylin' Jew.. It's a good time, to be Hebrew.. on Christmas. And to everyone else: Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year! French - Joyeux Noël et Bonne Année! German- Fröhliche Weihnachten und ein glückliches Neues Jahr! Greek - Kala Christougenna Ki'eftihismenos O Kenourios Chronos Hawaiian- Mele Kalikimaka & Hauoli Makahiki Hou Hebrew - Mo'adim Lesimkha. Shanah Tova (I couldn't resist!) Italian - Buon Natale e Felice Anno Nuovo Japanese - Shinnen omedeto. Kurisumasu Omedeto Romanian- Craciun fericit si un An Nou fericit! Spanish- Feliz Navidad y Próspero Año Nuevo Swedish - God Jul och Gott Nytt År Vietnamese - Chuc Mung Giang Sinh - Chuc Mung Tan Nien Yiddish - Gute Vaynakhtn un a Gut Nay Yor I wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and a very happy new year! |
Merry Xmas to one and all!

We're even having a bit of snow right now. It's pretty to look at while we're home today, but I sure do hope it stops for tomorrow... |

God bless us, every one!
(says another avowed atheist) |
We just got back from my sister's. My sister always makes a wonderful Christmas dinner; prime rib, mashed potatoes, all the trimmings.... I have been looking forward to it all week!
We get there... No sit down dinner. No prime rib. No mashed potatoes. This year, it was a hors d'oeuvre type buffet with antelope meatballs as the main course. I kid you not. I'm really disappointed. :( |
Had a good Christmas....you? Kids happy, wife happy, wallet still intact, but relatives suck.
Had to go to Christmas dinner last night (tradition to do it on Christmas Eve) with a group of people including the only two genuine racists I know, and many other people (mostly non-relatives - family friends and moochers who contribute nothing to the huge feast) I just really don't like. This happens every year, and I do it for my wife, who in turn does it for her mom. So we were at the inlaws yesterday. Went back today for Christmas (late) morning with her parents. I get to go back Thursday. Both of the wife's brothers were out of town with their wives families. Both get back tomorrow. However, they can't stand to be in the same room with each other, so I have Christmas with one brother and the wife's parents on Thursday, and the other brother and the wife's parents on Saturday. Sigh. Sometimes trying to make everyone happy at Christmas makes me very unhappy. |
Scaeagles, I say you quit the self sacrifice BS and let them find their own happiness. You can never *make* anyone else feel any particular way, and if they aren't choosing your absence as an excuse to be unhappy, they'll just choose something else anyways (or so it sounds).

I was talking to my mom about it, and I remember on year we had a white Thanksgiving but I can't remember an actual Christmas snow (though it must have happened at least a couple of times and I remember having old snow on Christmas). |

But what do I know? I don't have to deal with my disfunctional family at Christmas, and I consider myself fortunate for that. |
Pretty good Christmas. Got almost everything I wanted :)
Hurt my back this morning, so moving around today was kinda annoying. But it was for a good cause ;) Alex's family does Christmas Eve dinner and a Christmas Day "brunch", so we're actually home already and probably going to enjoy some nice warm mac and cheese flavored with leftover ham. And I'll probably need to make some soup soon, using my new crock pot! |
Whew! Dance Dance Revolution is quite the workout, but for the moment at least this old dog is teaching them younglings how to boogie... :D
The gifts are all deliverd, the dinner served the dishes done, time for this Santas helper to pack it in for the night.... Merry Christmas one and all. |
t minus 1 hour and counting for the roomie to return. The house is as clean as I can get it right now, she will hopefully deal. Her box containing many tokens is wrapped and I'm going to plop on the couch and listen to the Festival of 9 Lessons and Carols and read a new book I received for Xmas.
It's been a peaceful day, Tango will soon get some shrimp (which she will enjoy much more than any of her xmas toys, spoiled cat) and I will enjoy a good cuppa tea with my roomie and listen to tales of the latest Mexican adventure. But, in the back of my mind will be lurking only the warmest of well wishes to everyone on LoT, regardless of faith or not, you're a swell bunch and any chance to tell you so is an opportunity that cannot be missed. Merry Merry and peace to all of you. |

Ours was white despite the rain showers we had Sunday. We got a dusting of snow to freshen it up yesterday. I still got in a run today. Not bad, temperature around 35 F.
|
Merry Christmas!
Merry BonJoviMas :) i just had to. Ethel and Lucy are passed out on the couch snuggled in with stuffed animals each one getting one for Xmas thanks to their mommy :) I've never seen Ethel take to a stuffed animal but i guess she knows it's Xmas. They had quite the evening last night and day at my parents in the desert so i think they got tired out :) Got a whole lot of Jovi stuff and good stuff. Friend surprised me with a couple nice gifts that i knew she was creative but wow...think she beat me this year tehehehe Can't wait i'm off Sun thru Tues of next week yay 3 days off in a row....
|
Happy Christmas everybody! I had a good day. We shared the gifting, though it was not particularly dramatic, and we went to a movie. I like this set of relatives, and we had some fun.
|
wow I really cleaned up this year!
- $20 gift certificate to Best Buy - Shoes - Mickey Shirt - Friends book (99 cent store buy) - Batman book (99 cent store buy) - $20 to Pizza Kitchen - $30 to Target. Hmmmm |
B and I had a lovely Christmas this year. Jammies, games and napping all day!
|
Drove to San Diego and back today. Got into a debate with the entire family on politics (the lone conservative in a group full of liberals). MIL is one who believes you are an idiot if you don't believe with her, so naturally, we had some issues. But otherwise a fun day!
|
I'm done with work. I'm almost done with my sewing project. I just finished eating delicious rack of lamb with cous cous and steamed veggies and all is right with the world. Thurston, however, is VERY upset that he couldn't get his chomps around one of those lamb bones.
I was driving around this evening and got to see such a wonderful display of lights in the various neighborhoods I visited......AND I saw a baby skunk. This is always my favorite time of the Holidays - the mad rush is almost over and there is a bit of time to reflect and enjoy....before NYE comes careening around the corner. Merry Christmas! |
I went to a dinner party at some friend's last night. He happens to be the executive chef at the zoo - you don't turn down an invitation like that.
Erin spent the night with me, and we had our Christmas this morning. Her mom picked her up just after noon to go to Grandma Beth's for family Christmas up there. That's when I start cooking. Every Boxing Day since Linda and I split I've had her family over for brunch. It's become a required part of Christmas. Egg cassarole, O'brian potatoes, yam and fruit gratin, apple spice bread and fruit pizza. It's been a good day. ron |
Merry Christmas, Y'all!
Hope everyone had a great day! :) ![]() What you talkin' 'bout, Everybody! |
I took the teen and twins to OC and spent the day with my folks and my brother.
We exchanged gifts, played around outside a little, and the teen and I even copped a nap on my old bunk bed while the twins were distracted by a movie. We had Chinese buffet dinner and got thoroughly stickered up by one of the 6 year olds' Dora stickers. While one of the strangest and most sullen Christmases I can recall (my first wife's funeral is scheduled for this Friday), it was great to be together and goof around. |
So I'm curious, what were all our non-christian friends up to on Christmas day? Did you really go for a movie and Chinese food? Did anyone get a bite at the zoo?

Scaeagles, I can relate. We got on the topic of funding being cut for music in schools, and my father began ranting about how high school bands are playing mariachi music now, signifying the end of American culture. Thankfully it was about time for us to leave, and we did so, abruptly. Other than that it was nice seeing everyone and stuffing ourselves with good food. |
I'm not Christian, and we spent the day celebrating Christmas. Christmas doesn't have Christian origins, so I really have no problem removing the Jesus part that wasn't supposed to be there originally. I'm not pagan either though, so I guess we just do it because it's fun. :)
|
I disagree, traci.....I'm not sure how you get that "Christ's Mass" has no Christian origins. Perhaps you are referring to the time of year? Yes, the celebration at this time was to counter the solstice celebrations (as far as I understand it), and it is indeed a conglomeration of many different things. but to say it isn't supposed to be there in the first place....not sure I agree with that. People pick and choose various aspects of how they celebrate, and that's fine, btu don't say it dioesn't belong there.
|
Merry Belated Christmas! :)
We had a really fun day. The kids didn't wake us up too early (got to "sleep in" until 7:30). We had fun opening presents and playing games with the kids all day. We watched some TV and relaxed in the afternoon. Then had a really nice Christmas dinner with my in-laws and played some more games. We also got some snow around noon that stuck for a little while. Then the snow turned to rain, then back to snow again. So this morning there was a bit of ice on the roads. But no trouble driving to work. |

Intentionally making this a separate post.

And the Pagans can't really claim origination on celebrating the holiday. Alex has posted on this in the past, but I cannopt readily find that at the moment. |
Yep, the name not withstanding, Christmas has it's origin in pre-christian religious traditions (just like Easter).

On Christmas day my daughter asked "How did they celebrate Christmas eve before Jesus?" |
I don't have any probs saying "Merry Christmas"... on Christmas Day, Christmas Eve... Saying it for the entire month of December is not my thang. Saying it in October and November is right out.

What about it does belong there? Jesus wasn't born in December. The Christmas tree has pagan origins. Other than the name there are no associations with Christianity at all, as far as I know. Though it may have had a different name (and be a bit different than the modern holiday), the holiday itself predates Christianity. I've heard the explanation that Kevy offered before as well. To the best of my knowledge, the early church took a pagan holiday and tacked on Jesus to get more conversions. That's not to say that I don't think Christians should celebrate Christmas. Whatever makes you Merry is alright with me. It just strikes me as funny when people ask what non-Christians do on Christmas. I don't even consider it a religious holiday in the least. If you do, and that works for you, then that's great. :) |
Quote:
I know for me, while I toss all that devine son-of-God mumbo-jumbo right out the window I still celebrate the man and his message. |

I guess for us it's a mix of solstice and family. I really like the darkness/going within symbolism of solstice, but we're an atheist family (with spiritual atheist leanings), so we don't celebrate the same way pagans might. I think for us Christmas is what it is for most people, Christian or otherwise...A time to be with loved ones, give what enriches their lives, and celebrate the goodness of life. I just don't see what it has to do with Jesus.
|
Christmas is an event that Americans have highjacked for commercialism. We highjacked it from the Christians, who highjacked it from the Pagans who hijacked it from someone else.
The naming of Christmas was something done by the Christians when converting the Pagans. |
