The Sexiness of Steampunk

Oh, to be more talented than I am...

http://steampunkworkshop.com/lcd.shtml

I love you, computer screen!

€uroMeinke 12-26-2007 03:11 PM

Heck - look at that keyboard!

Chernabog 12-26-2007 03:12 PM

Oh my that is too f'ing cool for words.

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 12-26-2007 03:30 PM

Yes, it really is a whole shebang kinda deal. Love the Jules Verne-iness of it all.

Pirate Bill 12-26-2007 04:04 PM

That is sweet! I love the rocker arm controls.

Cadaverous Pallor 12-26-2007 04:35 PM

Man, that keyboard is drool-worthy. Gorgeous!

JWBear 12-26-2007 04:40 PM

How would you do the mouse?

Morrigoon 12-26-2007 04:42 PM

Maybe make it look like an ink blotter?

Would probably work best on a cordless optical mouse.

Not Afraid 12-26-2007 05:32 PM

I've had quite a few drool-moments on this site. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this style!

Gemini Cricket 12-26-2007 06:10 PM

Speaking of keyboards. My assistant jumbled all of her letter key buttons so nothing actually corresponds to its letter. It's a total mindf*ck. I can't use her computer at all. Too confusing. (I guess that was the point...) :D

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 12-26-2007 06:23 PM

Very cool stuff.

Sub la Goon 12-26-2007 06:29 PM

Wicked awesome!

innerSpaceman 12-26-2007 06:39 PM

Yeah, I've been to this site before. Someone who knew I longed for an office of modern equipment done exclusively in H.G. Wells/Jules Verne style turned me on to it.

Now to raise the $90K I'll need to buy the custom furnishings and customize all the equipment.

CoasterMatt 12-26-2007 07:07 PM

Um.... I wonder if anybody around here MODS computer (and stereo equipment too)? Hmmm....

Couldn't you just see the leather wingback chair and everything?

Alex 12-26-2007 09:00 PM

Steampuck as a genre doesn't really appeal to me, but I must say that would be an awesome monitor to have (the keypboard is cool to look at but as a very fast touch typist it doesn't look like something I'd want to actually use.)

CoasterMatt 12-26-2007 09:03 PM

It's been awhile since I had my copper plate computer (with matching mouse, monitor and keyboard).

The next build of the Atomic Cookie Blast Furnace is gonna have a very different look- if I didn't already start buying stuff, I might go back to the steampunk genre.

Another great Steampunk site - it even has a Steampunk Name Generator!

€uroMeinke 12-27-2007 12:20 PM

That's cool, but too much like 2-dimensional set design and could be much improved upon - e.g. forget that flat cut-out representation of piping - put in some real brass tubing to replace the painted conduit already on the walls - I think the look is much cooler when made to actually be functional as well as decorative.

My name is the Honourable Edmund Lisney. Hmmm ok! It's almost Disney, but not quite :)

I like the steampunk genre aesthetically but can't think of anything besides William Gibson's "The Difference Engine" that was a good thing in the genre (I mean, besides elements of Jules Verne's writing). I saw an anime called "Steamboy" which had some great steampunk visuals, but fell flat in the plot department.

Not sure if comic books are your bag, but Moore's The League of Extraordinary Gentleman is a good example.

And aspects of The Golden Compass - Lyra's Oxford - were very steampunk inspired. And the book is fantastic.

Thanks EH and GD I'll have to check out those recommendations. The only one of those I've had a chance to peruse was "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen", which had a good concept, but lousy execution (in the film version... I am sure the comics are more entertaining).

The movie looked good but was complete crap. The comics are very, very well written.

I liked the steampunk elements in The Golden Compass but mostly because they were pretty minimal and mostly in the background. The movie version of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a good example of it as well but the movie thoroughly sucks (but not because of the steampunk).

While not strictly steampunk, I think my favorite title is Diamond Age.

JWBear 12-27-2007 04:11 PM

Speaking of steampunk.... Did anyone here watch The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne? Michael Praed was smokin hot as Phineas Fogg.

The company that makes that rig is called Wood Contours. They are based in Thousand Oaks, but their web site totally blows. However, I remember previously seeing that unit and knew that it was wood.

One of the pictures on the article Kevy linked (namely the Sangaku case) gave me a nice idea... what about doing a computer case in the Arts & Crafts style, using wood, a router, and opaque colored plastic? Sort of something that would fit in at Storyteller's Cafe, you know?

Oooh... or even wood and stained glass. I used to do the kind of stained glass where you applied the color with eyedroppers and outlined the image in something called liquid leading. That would be totally easy to do!

I think I might make a trip to Bohemian Crystal at the fabric district first though. They have a ton of jewelry parts for dirt cheap (including some cameos and a gob of assorted brassy things), and I'm betting that the jewelry district might even have some clock gears by the pound or something.

So, first we need a trip downtown, then a night for making the goods! :D

http://porkshanks.livejournal.com/

NirvanaMan 01-02-2008 05:28 PM

F'ing awesome. Though I appreciate the keyboard more than the monitor myself.

Though I do find myself conflicted with design for designs stake, adding nothing practical in the execution and in many ways impacting the functionality of the original design detrimentally. Hmm internal conflict on this one will not be quickly resolved.

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 01-02-2008 05:40 PM

Retrofitting in reverse is certainly a form over function enterprise, but as works of techno-art I stand impressed. It will be interesting to see how the movement progresses. Perhaps some of the I.D. issues will be tackled to improve the overall functionality.

CoasterMatt 01-02-2008 07:45 PM

Kevy Baby 03-26-2008 05:21 PM

From Tref's thread on abandoned buildings, I poked around the site and found a place in Ryhope, England that EH needs to raid:

Quote:

Ryhope, England is home to an abandoned water pumping station that almost seems like a retrofuturistic structure straight out of a cyberpunk novel. This deserted structure is a monument to the Victorian era of industrialization, dating back to the middle of the 19th Century. It was an important step in the modernization of clean water distribution in an era where urban densification and disease went hand in hand. Though the station is no longer in active use all of the machinery still works, a true testament to the capabilities of Victorian English engineers.

I found this place here.

But on a bluetooth, wouldn't some watch parts (what is the name for inner workings, I'm drawing a blank) work using a deftly disguised watch battery? Like faked bits of coal as Alex mentioned? I wish I were mechanical, this could be a fun project!

I actually really like the Victorian Steampunk House! While I love Steampunk style, I'm finding it a bit contrived, but they did a good job with the house and it certainly fits well with the architecture.

Capt Jack 04-08-2010 10:03 PM

finally got to see the SP ratrod (blocked at work for whatever reason). the video worries me a might (like when the front grill fell off...and frankly, it sounds like shyte) as Im hoping its 'a project in progress'. some interesting bits on it, but I honestly envision something a bit more raw myself. and surely not modern V8 powered.
flathead maybe.

but yeah, its surely not lacking creativity

This made me check out the 360 view this time, and yeah, not sure what they were thinking with the stained glass. Did you see that sink?? Looks like the microwave is on the to-do list.

lol! The 360 thing made me dizzier than a bearded Sloan watching Cloverfield! Is the sink brass? I'm thinking that would be a pain to maintain. Yeah, the microwave should have metal whistles, gauges and cranks on it.

Ghoulish Delight 04-09-2010 01:39 PM

Sink looks like copper, don't think it takes much maintenance but I could be wrong.

Cadaverous Pallor 04-09-2010 04:24 PM

Hmm, I thought the creamy color of the sink was more like porcelain or something.

If you like vampires and steampunk, I have a book series for you! The author is Gail Carriger, and the first book is called Soulless. The byline is "A novel of vampires, werewolves, and parasols." It has a plucky lady of impeccable manners, a handsome werewolf, high society vampires, and is set in an alternate steampunkish Victorian London. It's a delightfully frothy read!

SzczerbiakManiac 01-07-2011 10:08 AM

I'm starting in on the 3rd book. They are very enjoyable. A comedy of manners with dark undercurrents.

It also reminds one that a well equipped parasol can be most efficacious when one finds oneself in bothersome circumstances concerning danger to ones dignity.

And yes, SM, there are... eh-em... gentlemen of peculiar sensibilities; as well as an eccentric inventorix with a scandalous predilection for men's clothing. (and if that's not bad enough, she's French!)

Kevy Baby 01-18-2011 09:58 PM

This is (to me) about as sexy as it gets. Mostly safe for work (nothing is showing), but hidden just in case.

Spoiler:

Alex 01-18-2011 10:04 PM

Just doesn't do it for me. I know it makes me less male but I can't help looking at that and saying "Ah, she squished her liver down into her leg somewhere in an attempt to mutilate herself to my liking..."

I just watched David Lynch's Dune again, for the first time in many years (It was actually a decent fan-edit using footage from the "TV version" to bolster the theatrical release, but I digress).

Two things occurred to me:
- The costume and set design are so amazingly steampunk. It was really a pleasure to look at them.
- The movie was much stupider than I remembered.
