Benazir Bhutto killed at rally

She was shot twice before the attacker blew himself up. Supporters are claiming the government refused to provide requested levels of security.

This does not bode well.

Oh My Fvcking God!!

I am too unbelievably shocked and appalled and saddened and, um, worried.

Um, Pakistan tinderbox much??

Snowflake 12-27-2007 08:45 AM

Well, this makes me sad, I was hopeful that she'd be elected and survive. Charismatic woman and I had hope. Damn.

Yes, tinderbox is a good word.

Not Afraid 12-27-2007 09:46 AM

Frightening news. I'm saddened but I'm also filled with trepidation.

Alex 12-27-2007 10:07 AM

Not unexpected but sad. I really hope it doesn't turn out that Musharraf was behind it.

Morrigoon 12-27-2007 10:27 AM

Oh please, you know he is... whether he gets caught or not is another story. He's been trying to put off the elections for some time. Guess he gets his wish now.

But like any good politician, he's expressing "regret" and telling the populace to calm down.

Hope this doesn't turn out like Archduke Ferdinand.

Alex 12-27-2007 10:31 AM

Not necessarily. The several groups that have tried to assassinate Musharraf over recent years would like Bhutto even less. Just because it isn't a bad thing for him doesn't mean he coordinated it. It also doesn't mean he is upset about it.

But no, I'd not bet any money on whether he was involved.

I don't see how it could possibly be a Archduke Ferdinand situation. There is no easily triggered cascade of mutual defense agreements involved. Ferdinand may have been the trigger for WWI but he really wasn't the cause.

Morrigoon 12-27-2007 10:39 AM

Good point... but the area is such a tinder box already, I think the potential is there.

true enough, not to mention it would of course be the first thing a great many folk would assume, and would be damaging Musharraf regardless of what could or couldnt be proven. the seed of doubt would be well planted as well as serving to focus attention on him and away from those truly involved.

however Musharraf does stand to, in some ways benefit from it and a conspiracy on his part isnt out of the question by any means

regardless. its a freakin' mess

wendybeth 12-27-2007 07:43 PM

I really doubt Musharraf is behind this one. There are just too many other groups that stand to gain more from the resultant chaos to lay this one at his feet. I do have to say that she may have been brave, but she was very foolish. She should have been more cautious- so many things depended, or appeared to depend, on her survival and participation in the governing of Pakistan, and she is running around that powderkeg of a country in a ****ing convertible?

Moonliner 12-27-2007 08:03 PM

Behind it? Probably not. Did what he could to facilitate it, definitely.

This just in from HDNet...

Quote:

HDNET TO AIR DAN RATHER REPORTS INTERVIEW WITH BENAZIR BHUTTO

Version with updated commentary from Rather to air Friday, December 28

DALLAS - December 27, 2007

WHAT: HDNet will air an interview with Dan Rather and Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. The interview was originally broadcast in August of this year, just before Bhutto returned to Pakistan after a period of self-exile.

The updated version will include a new introduction by Rather including commentary about Bhutto's recent assassination.

In the original interview, Bhutto gave Rather rare insights into the political maneuvering that may be shaping Pakistan's future.

The U.S. government had reportedly been working behind the scenes to facilitate a power sharing agreement between Bhutto and Musharraf as a means of legitimizing the regime of America's close ally in the war on terror.

Bhutto was the first woman to lead a Muslim nation.

WHEN: "DAN RATHER REPORTS - A Prime Minister in Exile" airs Friday, December 28 at 6:00 p.m. ET with additional airings scheduled for Saturday, December 29 and Sunday December 30 at 9:00 a.m. ET

Was it a convertible or a Sunroof.....?

Kevy Baby 12-27-2007 11:40 PM

Sunroof

wendybeth 12-28-2007 12:37 AM

I stand corrected- it was a sunroof. She stood incorrectly, and is now dead. Sorry- don't mean to be glib, but I think her actions were incredibly stupid and now a whole lot more bad things are going to happen just because she didn't have the good sense to protect her ass better. I suspect she may have caught Martyritis- it's the only explanation I can think of for this sort of behavior on her part.

€uroMeinke 12-28-2007 10:20 AM

I think she knew that assasination was likely and had accepted that possibility. Knowing from past experience as Prime Minister that the real power of the country lies in the military and not the government I suspect she also accepted the fact that her death might bring about change perhaps more than her election would.

Regardless, she approached her role fearlessly, which is usually an admired trait in leaders. And in a world where people regularly die for causes, it's nice to see that sacrifices for democracy are made at the leadership level and not just an expectation of foot soldiers.

Finally: a voice of reason on this matter.

Blade 01-10-2008 10:03 PM

According to Pakistan and the White House she was killed by Al Quada, and the shots missed. It was the bomb that killed her.

wendybeth 01-10-2008 10:09 PM

I think it's a miracle when anyone reaches 30 in that part of the world, let alone 50-some years. Especially when one is a female challenging a very patriarchal regime.

I think they ought to put Qaddafi's chick brigade on the case. I bet they are very good at handling violent misogynists.

Blade 01-10-2008 10:19 PM

She was quite critical of the War on Terror. Funny that she was killed by terrorists isn't it? Anyone else critical of it should be happy to meet the same fate.

wendybeth 01-10-2008 10:23 PM

Oh, certainly. Anyone who dares to question the powers that be most assuradly deserves to be shot, blown up and crushed by the sunroof of a car. I think we should make that the new death penalty here in the US.

Not to stir up more trouble, but do we have a troll? and I do not mean CP!

Wow, three posts, and two of them potentially insulting to the majority of this community.

Are you saying you are against the War on Terror?

Since 9/11 we are in a new age. The Silent majority in this country are tired of those who leach off the system, want thier liberal Ideals shoved down our throats, illegaly enter this country, and sympathize with the enemy. We were attacked because they are jealous of our freedoms and want to bring down the greatest nation on earth. We are the greatest nation on earth because we are blessed by God for being a good Christian nation.

I thank God every day we have a President who can see past the polls and knows what is in the best intrest of worthy contributing members of this society.

Not Afraid 01-11-2008 07:11 PM

And, by "we" you really mean "me" or "I"

Since 9/11 we are in an age of fear which has bubbled over to other ridiculous fears manifesting themselves in other areas. It will fade away soon enough because, it's not reasonable to keep up this kind of rhetoric.

Ghoulish Delight 01-11-2008 07:12 PM

Okay, this is going to devolve quickly.

Blade - I'll try to put this simply. The members of this board do NOT tolerate partisan bullying. If you are simply trying to stir the pot, stop. If you truly believe in your stance and can find no other way to express it beyond disparaging other people, leave. If you continue with the tone you've come here with, you will be shown the door.

Everyone else...have some pity on us moderators and let him dig his own grave if he chooses to.

Oh. I thought we were a great nation because our forefathers fought for the freedom to speak out against our government when we disagree. Because of the groundwork our forefathers did we have the freedom to dress how we please, worship how we please (whatever deity it may or may not be), we have jobs, food and education available to us, regardless of race, gender or religion. Really didn't have anything to do with god. Just hard working men and women who fought for what they believed in.

If god is so great, then how come we have such a high homeless population? How come we have children who are beaten and otherwise abused, how come we have elderly who go to bed hungry?

But yeah Blade, wow us with something - there must be something unique or interesting about yourself, try sharing that. Otherwise, I think you best take Ghoulish Delight's advice and hop on the next bus back to squaresville.

I like the LoT beyotch idea, but that's just wishful thinking. Your garden variety troll makes a terrible beyotch, in that they subconsciously take themselves very seriously, and true beyotches......well, they tend to be taken for granted. Actually, it isn't funny at all. Although she was critical of it(and she even aligned herself with the Taliban at one time) she was also a key to winning it. The more democracy we have in that part of the world the better off everyone will be. With her death our road to victory got harder not easier.

The "silent majority" have not been silent since 1980. We've actually made great progress against the leaches of our society although much work is left to be done. Non-conservatives are not really trying to shove their ideals down our throats anymore.....they're just trying to tread water nowadays. As for illegals entering the country......most of them are actually conservative in nature. They lean Democrat only because of practical reasons.

Well, you're half right. We were attacked because of jealousy. As for being the greatest nation on Earth because we are blessed by G-d for being a good Christian nation.....perhaps, although I think the main reason we are the greatest nation on Earth is that we are comprised of the most adventurous and hard working people. Our Nation is an immigrant nation...moreso than any other. Immigrants tend to be risk takers, hard working, and intelligent individuals....if they were not these things they would have just stayed put. We are the children of these immigrants so we have inherited much of what made them so great....thus, we are a great nation.

Approval ratings and polls mean nothing. History will show Bush has been just what this country needed. Bush is not guided by what people think, he is guided by God. I wish he could stay another 8 years.

Sigh - someone might even listen to some of your vitriol if you learned a few manners, but It seems your real intent is to come and call names and feel good and righteous - a definite party foul.

We're here to have a good time, and I know it makes the humorless resentful, so perhaps you should leave this pit of sin and go to church and pray for our souls.

Is that what they're teaching in church these days? To laugh at others' demise?

Wow, now we know why the world is so ****ed up.

Not Afraid 01-15-2008 09:01 PM

I still do NOT get the attitude of "I'm going to walk into a private party and tell everyone there they are lunatics". It's as if we would actually CARE if some doofus thought we were lunatics. Yeah yeah....another martini please.

€uroMeinke 01-15-2008 09:06 PM

Perhaps we should go over to their place and tell them what bores they are while drinking their booze?

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 01-15-2008 09:13 PM

Wow, another snubbing.

Ya, let's get good and toasted for the impossible (yet somehow inevitable) "California falling into the ocean".

Um Blade, you might want to go to an Oceanography class and turn off those B rated T.V. movies. The tectonic plates aren't formed in a way for CA to "break off". Too bad whoever told you about this board is hasn't copped to inviting you here. I suspect they didn't anticipate the drivel you'd spew.

Ghoulish Delight 01-16-2008 12:11 AM

Heading off any speculation...Blade was likely NOT recommended by anyone and has decided on his own to waste his time and ours by bringing his brand of boring grudge-holding to us.

Welcome Blade. I'd offer you a drink, but I'm only supposed to serve them to adults.

BarTopDancer 01-16-2008 12:14 AM

Eh, I think it's attention seeking - can't get any positive, so it's time to get any that s/he can. I'm bored with it now. Can I have a drink? Or some bacon?

Motorboat Cruiser 01-16-2008 12:20 AM

I just figured Blade was Pat Robertson.

Prudence 01-16-2008 12:47 AM

I like to think that our little corner of teh intarwebs is so revolutionary that somewhere there really is another board that is preparing to launch an assault. I wonder if they sit around wondering how they can inhibit the growth of swank. Maybe they're recruiting some USDA officials to arrange a bacon shortage!

Disneyphile 01-16-2008 12:59 AM

I want bacon. Who has bacon?

Morrigoon 01-16-2008 01:17 AM

Yeah, I think Blade is just trying to stir up **** by blaming someone for his coming here. I call shenanigans.

(Hmm... that brings me to mind of something...)

Jazzman 01-16-2008 01:25 AM

What? California can't fall in the ocean?

Damnit! So much for Real Estate speculation.

Anybody know a good Realtor in Nevada?

Do they teach that at Havahd? ;)

Again, Blade is a troll and nothing more. Feed at your peril. Not that peril is a bad thing- we'd all like just a bit of peril in our lives, right?

Sorry, NA- couldn't resist.

I'm not much of an expert on board manners, but it strikes me that if you're going to act like an FBI plant in the Black Panthers, you should at least put on the big afro for a while.

No, it's too perilous.

Regan survived the exorcism. She is presumably still alive and well. The actress who portrayed her still is.

Not Afraid 01-16-2008 10:27 AM

But, I REALLY want to know about Evil Knievel.

Donald Regan, however, is still dead. At least according to Nancy Reagan's astrologer.

BarTopDancer 01-16-2008 12:02 PM

Is Kennedy?

Go away for five days and come back to a lesson:

You guys still really suck at ignoring trolls.

BarTopDancer 01-16-2008 02:54 PM

But Alex, he's our pet! I named him squishy and he shall be our squishy!

:p

Well, George Hamilton portrayed Evil Knievel in a movie, he's still alive (actually, I think preserved is a better description), does this count?

Oh, and last time I checked at Hollywood Forever, Valentino's still dead, too. In case anyone might be wondering.

Aw, you're just mad cause you missed all the fun!

Alex 01-16-2008 03:13 PM

Not really, it was an ineligant enough troll that I wouldn't have had any fun.

Besides, I was in Vegas, so I was definitely having more fun.

Yeah, I guess Vegas is much more fun than your average troll.

Disneyphile 01-16-2008 03:44 PM

While Alex was shooting craps, we were shooting crap. ;)

Morrigoon 01-16-2008 03:48 PM

We were bored. We have pointy sticks. He was a troll.

*poke*

wendybeth 01-16-2008 04:36 PM

We should all be spanked.:D

Wicked, bad, naughty Zoot!

Kevy Baby 01-16-2008 07:38 PM

Damn... I can't find any pictures of Quick-Time Harch

innerSpaceman 01-16-2008 08:04 PM

My only disappointment with Spam-a-lot was that they cut the spanking scene.

They had to pad the story with so much stuff about making Holy Grail into a Broadway show (very funny stuff, mind you) ... but it left me in puzzlement as to why they'd leave that single bit out from the original source material. (I think they left out the bridge scene, too ... not sure ... must see it again ... hysterical show.)
