Okay this might be a dumb question, but what are spiders & bots

Ghoulish Delight 03-08-2005 07:33 PM

Spiders and bots are programs used by search engine websites that go out and "crawl" the web, cataloging the sites they find. They load a web page, figure out what key words are on the web page, as well as where that page links to and many other bits of information that they use. All of that is cataloged and indexed in the search site's database so that it will come up in a search.

For instance, thanks to msn's spiders, if you put cameltoe and the phrase "moser jam" (yes, that's moser, not monster) in msn's search, you'll find thread on this site.

I believe that was a Jim Stafford song from the 1970s.

Well, I don't like 'em. Snakes, neither.;)

Not Afraid 03-08-2005 07:54 PM

Maybe they're looking for better words than "Cameltoe" and "Men's Untucked Shirts" to find us.

And, Tref, you are in BIG trouble!

I don't like spiders and snakes and that won't what it take to love me, like I wanna be loved by you..........

blueerica 03-08-2005 09:09 PM

All this pertinent information: What will we ever do with it all?

lashbear 03-09-2005 06:12 AM

ain't no spider-bot crawlin in MY cameltoe !

Betty 03-09-2005 06:24 AM

That's an awful lot of traffic to contribute to bots. do you have a stats program with your hosting like awstats or webalizer or something? You should be able to tell from that. Or just look at your log files and compare to the names of bots.

Even more fun is to use a program like clickstats. Probably way to much to spend for a play site like this one but you could download a free trial that's 15 or 30 days and it'll tell you all sorts of things about your visitors.

MerryPrankster 03-09-2005 08:00 AM

I can't decide what I should wear today -- hairsuit or "cameltoe" pants??? :coffee:

Yes, we have a stats programs, and it's search spiders. It's common for them to converge on a site like that.
