Mary Blair Exhibit-SF
Via boingboing
The Art and Flair of Mary Blair October 27, 2007 - March 18, 2008 "Mention the name Mary Blair, and few will recognize it. But say she designed 'Alice In Wonderland,' the 'It's A Small World' ride at Disneyland, and painted many of the most popular Little Golden Books, and people will 'Oh yeah!' in recognition. Few others working in animation in the '40s and '50s were as innovative, interesting, and accessible as Mary Blair. Through her unique color styling and graphically strong shape language, her work pushed animation design in a different direction towards a more evocative, suggested feeling of the subject matter. "Blair's work is decidedly not realistic, but it evokes powerful emotions in the audience. Her sense of color defies logical explanation, yet somehow feels emotionally perfect. No wonder Walt Disney loved her work. Like animation itself, her paintings were a caricature of real life; more intensely evocative of the thing than the thing itself." --Pete Docter, Director of "Monsters, Inc.," Pixar Animation Studios This looks pretty cool. It is at the Cartoon Museum. They also have a Edward Gorey Exhibit going on. |
Hmm... I think I owe my dad a visit :)

Oooh! How did I not know about this until now?
I'm SO going next weekend! Hopefully I can take pics and report! FEJ, many thanks! |
Thanks FEJ!! Maybe I can make it out there next weekend!
|
I hadn't heard about it. I'm not the biggest Mary Blair fan but it would probably be a good social outing for me.
|
Given the storming weather we're supposed to have, I may not brave a MUNI/BART trip to the exhibit this weekend.
I'll hope for better weather in the next week or so. |
Let me know when you plan to go. I have such a jones to get back to San Francisco that I can hardly contain myself.

Ugh, next weekend's impossible for me.
Don't delay on my account, but if you could wait until the following weekend (Jan 19, 20), I would seriously consider coming up. |

Sorry folks, my Christmas bills just came in and it's time for some serious belt-tightening. No travel for me.
My apologies for any inconvenience in delaying anyone's visit to the exhibit. |
I might go to WonderCon in February. This might be a stop for me. (wishing, wishing, wishing!)

Okay, weather permitting, I'll be going soon! (and I will post non-flash pics if they're allowed) It's raining again. |
Oh, hurumph, I will definitely be up before March 18. I am seriously considering relocating, and need to spend more time in the fair city.
