movies at la casa de mousepod
OK... I've been threatening a "movie night" followed a by a discussion (for a podcast?) for a while now...
This Saturday evening, we'll be watching the Ghibli movie "Tales From Earthsea," based on the Ursula Le Guin "Earthsea" stories. It's directed by Goro Miyazaki, Hayao's son, and won't be released in the US until 2009 (because the Sci-Fi channel has a 5-year lock on the the rights and its miniseries aired in 2004). Luckily, the Japanese DVD contains both the Japanese dialogue (with English subtitles) and the English cast featuring Timothy Dalton, Willem Dafoe, and Mariska Hargitay. For movie viewing, our living room can comfortably seat 8, so after Heather and I are counted, that means there's room for 6, so an RSVP is probably the way to go. We'll have a vote on whether to go with subtitles or the English dub. In the event of a tie, the dogs will decide... somehow... Here's one of the trailers... |
Since I can't make most events with 2 days notice, I vote no one goes and we reschedule for a day I can go. ;)
Just kidding. I'll just steal MP's copy. |
I'd like to go, but I'm stuck here without wheels
|
How the heck did you get a copy of that? I've been dyin to see it!
Mousepod's got the connections, apparently. Or region-free goodness ;) And DUH Japanese with English subtitles!!! |
He ordered from Amazon JP and has region free goodness (like we do - but he had it first).
|
oooh, me, me ... pick me!
|
Region? What is this silliness you speak of? ;)
|
too far away for me, so I'll take a raincheck if I can get it or an invitation
|
Awww, I would have loved to go, but I've got work :(
Haven't seen EarthSea either |
A firm maybe.
|
Wow. What a pretty looking film! I miss 2D animation...
I'm a maybe as well. :) |
I tried to watch it when it originally aired on the SciFi Channel. But I kept wanting to throw things at my TV. I don't think anyone connected to the production had ever read the books. It's awfull!
|
I never bothered with the SciFi channel miniseries. Apparently Le Guin was not thrilled with the way it turned out.
Here's what she thinks of the Ghibli movie. |
Oh! You're talking about a new animated version! Cool! (I thought you were going to screen the miniseries.)
ETA: It sounds like she doesn't care much for this version either. |
It's a definite no, unless we simulcast. Then it's a yes. But I'd need to get myself region-free goodness and the DVD... and we're just trying to get ourselves a DVD player that can play some Blu-Ray or some HD. Oh, the woes of the upgrade!

Interested but don't think I can this weekend. Sorry man.
|
I haven't read the books .... maybe I'll be inspired to by the Ghibli film. And that would be the proper order - - movie first, then books.
(Though I don't look kindly toward anything that's books plural.) |
I'd like to go!!! I read the books when I was a kid but I don't remember them. (At least, I read the first three). I'll have to dig em up after Saturday (I'm still massively engrossed in re-reading the "Dune" series, which incidentally was also made into a Sci-Fi channel miniseries, lol).
|
Excellent. So let's figure to gather at my place at around 6-ish. I'll start the movie around 7 (I know that seems early, but when we did a test run with The Ruling Class, there were a couple of movie-lovers struggling to keep their eyes open...).
We'll supply microwave popcorn and soft drinks. If you want other snacks or beverages of a more "adult" nature (though what's more adult than spicy ginger beer... really?), feel free to bring 'em along. Anyone who needs my address or directions, please PM me. See you there! |

No, I kinda liked the Dune miniseries. Cherny was kind enough to give me the DVD set as a gift, which I cherish. But I kinda combine it in my head with the David Lynch version - - which compeltely sucked, but had fantastic production design.
Heheh, I saw Cherny reading Dune recently, and was reminded how that was a fantastic book ... but the sequels, imo, were lame. I never bothered reading any of the recent spate of heir-authored sequels and prequels. But the original novel is stupendous. None of this has anything to do with Earthsea, except I'm beginning to look more forward to reading the book after movie-inspiration than I am to the movie itself. How many Earthsea books are there anyway? Is there an original and several sequels? |
There are five novels and a book of short stories. I would read the first three books first: A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore.
|
And all of the books are quite short too.
Not to totally shift the focus to Dune, but to respond to what iSm said, the Frank Herbert sequels were great IMO... I haven't read any of his son's Dune novels but I'm not incredibly interested in those. Apparently they are readable, but pedestrian. |
I remember that the first time I read Dune I was 16 or 17, and it took me a whole summer.
I've only read the first 4 books. |
Well, in preparation for the language vote for the actual Earthsea movie which is, hahaha, the purported subject of this thread ... I did a little basic Wikipedia research which did not help me at all.
I'm surprised the Ghibli movie is not based on the original novel, or even the second one ... but rather loosely on the 3rd and 4th books. That gives me the same pause I have in reading the books in that I just have this general assumption that the first story is great ... and the subsquent ones not so great ... for any series of books or movies. BUT, the key question here of whether the language of EarthSea is better represented by English or Japanese is still an open one for me. Apparently, most of our good guys vaguely resemble Pacific Islanders ...and most of our bad guys resemble Northern Europeans? Is that right? I really don't give a hoot if the film's original language is Japanese. I find it very distracting to watch films that clearly take place in Europe, but have everyone speaking as if they're in Nippon. This will not be case with EarthSea, of course, but the trailer mousepod linked to made it look like the film takes place in quasi-Arabia!! Also, since I find reading the subtitles ever so, but noticeably, distracting from the beautiful images so vital to animated films ... I really can only condone the Japanese language track for stories that actually happen in Japan. Um, and it would be hard for me to vote against Timothy Dalton and Willem Dafoe as two of the actors I'd be hearing. Will of the majority (or the casa de mousepod dogs) will rule ... but I'm giving fair warning that my vote will likely be for the English language version. :iSm: |
I've only read the first Dune book (must go back to the Sci-Fi thread and post that) and loved it, but I never had enough interest to read on. The only Le Guin I've read is the Catwings series. (Duh.)
|
We're in, btw

For me, watching dubbed is so grating. It's not about what the people look like or where they're from, it's about the pace and rhythm of the language matching the visual pace and rhythm of the movie. Even if Miyazaki has said he doesn't animate to the voice acting, there is simply a narrative sensibility that is inseparable from the native language of the story teller and that sensibility comes through in the animation. I don't care how good the translation and subsequent voice acting is, there will always be a disjoint in a dubbed movie between the spoken word and the visuals and to me, it's a glaring disjoint that detracts from the whole. |

|
As for your second point ... you are, of course, entitled to that opinion, but I've rarely heard purer hogwash.
I just finished watching The Orphanage, for instance, and there was nothing discernably Spanish about the tone, or pacing, or subject matter, or any quality of the film other than that it took place in Spain. I happened to have enjoyed hearing it in Spanish because it lent authenticity to story taking place in Spain. And of course, the actors' facial expressions and performances matched the dialogue far better than dubbing could facsimilate. But the same is not true of animated films. Especially not the Ghibli ones which, imo at least, have mouth movements that don't match any language precisely. But tell you what, if you will read the subtitles out loud for me ... so I can watch the movie ... I'll reconsider my vote. :D |
Just a quick reminder that we're starting the movie at 7pm - and if you need directions, please shoot me a PM.
|
I'd like to go, if there's room.
|
There's more room now - we aren't going to make it. Have fun guys!
|
I would go but my cough is back. Would like to at another time for sure. :)
|
OK. Let me be the first to post the sad truth that the movie was not so good. While a few of us liked bits and pieces of it, we all agreed that for the most part it was a mess. The animation was pretty and at times beautiful, as evidenced by the trailer, and the music had its moments, but from a narrative perspective - blah. To say that there were plot holes would be an understatement. To paraphrase Heather, it was as if they took a long book and randomly selected a few pages from several chapters and animated them, without any explanation of how they were linked. I sure wish there had been a Le Guin fan among the group last night to explain what the heck was going on.
On the other hand - I was delighted (as always) by the folks who turned up. Other than the film itself, it was a fun night filled with great conversation, interesting sodas and lots of "coming attractions." Expect another mousepod movie night in a couple of weeks. |
I didn't care for the movie. But there was some amazing animation here and there in this flick. The backgrounds and reflections were standouts.
Last night was great fun. It was my first time at casa de mousepod y Heather. Also, meeting the doggies was nice... even though Jack didn't care for my dancing. :D Thanks for the wonderful evening. :) |
Well it just goes to show that even a crappy movie will make for a fun night at casa de mousepod. Imagine what a good movie might inspire!!
Um, but yeah, Tales of Earthsea sucked. I wasn't even particularly impressed with the animation or visuals. It was just a complete and utterly boring mess, with nary an interesting thing happening between the opening hook and the final cliched hero battle, and characters who were just as boring and unlikeable as the "story" - which I have to put in quotes. I assume there are some worthy tales among the tales of Earthsea. This wasn't one of them. So, I likely hated the film the most ... and it did not dim my enjoyment of the evening in the slightest. Such Fun! |
Did you end up watching subtitles or dub (just curious, not suggesting it would change appreciation for the movie)?
|
We watched the dubbed version.
|

|
Oh, I would have fallen asleep at least six more times during the film if we'd been reading subtitles along with the tedium of everything else that, well, didn't happen.
|
Looks like the next movie will be this Saturday, January 19. As of this moment, the plan is to meet at Monkeyhouse, our local toy store/gallery, which will be having an art opening starting at 5pm. Around 6 or 6:30 we'll head up to the house for the movie, which I'd like to start at 7, which means 8:00, apparently.
|
Dude, you have got to plan these further in advance ;) (Admittedly, we wouldn't have been available MLK weekend anyway.)

Wish I could go, but I'm skiing in Mammoth this weekend with a lot of (....where can I go to find a bride?) Queens! I'll make the next one. Hope it isn't a horror movie!!

Perhaps once I stop working Saturdays (soon!) this will work out better. |
Well, is there a film schedule?
|
What's the date this Saturday? Because there's a dreaded Saturday coming up real quick where I've been invited to two parties I really want to go to, in opposite parts of the LA Metro Area World. Ugh, I havent' responded to either one ... and i'm going to have to make a Sophie's choice real soon. But if the next case de mp movie is on Jan 26, I am right out.
(Otherwise, totally IN) |
Mark your calendars
Feb. 2 Feb. 16 Mar. 1 Mar. 15 Mar. 29 Apr. 12 Apr. 26 May 10 May 24 Jun. 7 Jun. 21 Jul. 5 Jul. 19 Aug. 2 Aug. 16 Aug. 30 Sep. 13 Sep. 27 Oct. 11 Oct. 25 Nov. 8 Nov. 22 Dec. 6 Dec. 20 Holidays and other scheduled swankings aside, maybe I can work in a trip during one of the screenings. |
(in per usual)
|
This weekend's movie has been set!
It will be the 1941 musical-comedy Hellzapoppin'. Mostly famous today for its incredible swing dance number, it's also notable for being an early deconstructionist film. Fascinating and funny, too! There's also a possibility that's we'll be having a late-night screening of Lindsay Anderson's if... . I plan to show O Lucky Man! in the near future, so I want to give everyone the opportunity to see the first movie in the Mick Travis trilogy (though you don't really need to to appreciate OLM). (and while Snowflake's dates are pretty spot-on, there's going to have to be a little shuffling - I'll use this thread for updates) |
So the final plans:
6pm : Gather at our place (we'll be at Monkeyhouse before that) 7pm : Hellzapoppin' 9:30 : if... (if anyone is interested) As always, PM me or give me a call if you need directions... |

Trust me... you'd appreciate 'em.
|
What about the sheep?
|
The sheep scene that you remember is a quick visual gag in O Lucky Man.
|
thank you
|
All I recall from O Lucky Man, other than the song, is Malcolm McDowell being nursed by an accommodating wench. I'm not sure that was worth the whole three hours.

I saw O Lucky Man at an art house in Santa Fe, NM decades ago. (The long-gone City Lights Cinema - I worked there for a while after high school.) I wasn't old enough to get the movie, but I did fall in love with Helen Mirren on sight.
|
I loved Hellzapoppin! Thank you to mousepod and his lovely lady.
I want to get a copy of it when it gets released. Funny sh!t. Love slapstick comedy. :) |
For those of you who need advance notice (you know who you are):
The next movie night at our place will take place on Saturday, Feb 9. We'll be watching two creepy films (one full-length, one short) and the usual assortment of other stuff... |
OMG, mousepod. I'll never get to a screening again. (Feb. 9 is right out for me).
BTW, I'm so sorry I posted earlier that "I'm In" for whatever movie turned out to be playing on Hellzappopin' night. I didn't realize I had made previous plans, and I also forgot that - - while I texted Gemini Cricket - - I never contacted you about not making it. Heheh, I hope you didn't wait around too long for me. Good thing G.C. wondered aloud what y'all were waiting for. Oooops, sorry. (But I love the story about him brining up Juno to your other "Steve" guest.) |

It seems worth mentioning here that the debut album of J-pop duo HALCALI was titled BACON.
|
Ah, I will have to skip the 9th, and creepy films are favorites. Three of my favorite people in the world will be in town celebrating a birthday, and I will be spending most of the weekend with them...I hope.

Well, while I have a few critters I have to see that evening, I think I can work around their schedule and be at the screening.
|
Just a bump and a reminder:
I'm an apolgist for horror movies - though I admit that the times I've been truly scared have been few. Rare is the occasion that I'll see a flick that will haunt my dreams for days. This Saturday night at 7pm, we'll be screening two films - a full-length and a short - that truly creeped me out. We'll have interesting sodas and some snacks.... See you there. |
Huzzzzzah.
|
Hmm, if we can make it, it won't be by 7PM
|
Waaaaaaaaa, i can't make it. i'm so bummed. i love creepy films, but - heheh - i'm too scared to watch them alone.
(i've been wanting to watch The Orphanage again, but i can't make myself do it. The creepiness is amplified by it being subtitled, because you can't look away from the screen and still know what's going on, heheh.) Anyways, i'm so sorry i'll be missing this one. :( |
BTW, Steve, I'd love to see the Orphanage again. I'd love to make the rest of the gang watch it with us, too.
|
I got slammed with work but I'm going to still try to make it - for part of the festivities at least.
|
Quote:
(Hahaha, i'd love to BRING a DVD to casa de mousepod for a screening, the casa with over 10 zillion DVDs in residence.) |
I'm gonna make it this Saturday, whee!!!! Heather might have to hold me though for the scary parts. :)
|
So, what scary short and what feature was this? (Wish I coulda been there)
|
Quote:
|
Oh, this is still future tense. Cool. Wish I lived on your coast. (Though, if it' something I have in my own collection, I suppose I could simul-watch it.) Have a great time, all.
|
I'm in. If there's room left.
:) |
Great films.
Wonderful night. Thanks, y'all! :) And, can I just add: 2009 remake of Don't Look Now Nooooooooooooo! Kiefer and Robin Wright Penn? Spoiler:
|
Heh, holy crap, GC, I was just searching for this thread in order to post exactly the same link, followed by exactly the same extended "nooooo...." - and between the time I typed in the search and results were returned, you'd aleady said it all for me.
I finished the BFI book; I'm still very much appreciating the film this morning. |
Great minds... :)
I started looking up all of the books in the BFI series. Very interesting, indeed. Oh and I don't know who is in the cast for the remake. Those were guesses. |
Loved the films. I'm kinda bummed we didn't see a little blonde girl on the way home. I had the whole scream-swerve-crash choreographed in my head.
I'm glad we could finally make it to a second one of these. Where else can we see these films? |
I was so happy we had another successful movie night. If my calendar is right, the next one will fall on the night before the Oscars, so Javier Bardem in Perdita Durango seems like an obvious choice. And since there seem to be so many Isabella Rossellini fans in the crowd, we might have a late night showing of Wild At Heart, where she plays Perdita.
...and for those of you reading the thread who missed the night, we watched Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now and Fellini's Toby Dammit. |
And as much as everyone enjoyed Don't Look Now, I have to say Toby Dammit was my favorite of the evening - the distilled essence of Fellini, what a short - Nino Rota score, over the top fashion and paparazzi, the devil as a little girl, and decapitation. the film was made for me - I'm glad our paths finally crossed.
|
Quote:
So, I got to sleep at 3 am then woke up at 4:30 by someone screaming. Not sure if it was outide or if is was in my head (and not sure if red was involved). LOVED the films. I'd watch 8 1/2 tonight if I didn't think I'd fall asleep (again). |
Perdita Durango was the preview that caused the most excitement to me, so I'm up for seeing it.
|
Just a bump to remind everyone that this Saturday (Feb 23), we'll be featuring the two faces of Perdita Durango.
![]() ![]() I have a German DVD of Alex de la Iglesia's Perdita Durango, which is the only anamorphic widescreen version of the uncut movie (the American version is edited and isn't even anamorphic). The film stars Rosie Perez as the title character alongside Javier Bardem as Romeo, her psychotic lover. We'll start watching it at about 7pm. At 9:30, we'll watch David Lynch's Wild At Heart. While this movie follows a different pair of star-crossed lovers (Sailor and Lula, as played by Nic Cage and Laura Dern, respectively), it also features an appearance by Perdita Durango, here played by Isabella Rossellini. Both of these movies contain pretty intense sex and violence, so if either of those makes you squeamish, this might not be the double feature for you. Show up around 6ish. There will (as always) be fun video surprises, as well as interesting beverages. See you there! |
Chris and I will be there.
|
I will be there.
:) |
I'm a wuss, but I loved Wild at Heart. It's David Lynch!
|
I'm coming.
(Oh wait, perhaps that's not the appropriate way to RSVP for a sex and violence double feature) |
Bump diggity bump.
It's this Sat. :) |
I think we should all get juiced up on mescaline!
I cleared it with Gemini Cricket, and he's cool with it. Hope the mousepods agree! |
Wha...? I've been framed, I tells ya!
:D |
Just shut up and get the junk, like ya's promised.
|
Another successful movie night. Smaller crowd than usual - six people made for a cozy gathering. We decided early on to postpone Wild At Heart for a later date - perhaps for a Lynch marathon or a double feature with The Wizard of Oz. We snacked, chatted, used the word "mélange" quite a bit, and watched some trailers and musical bits (Amy Winehouse and a subtitled(!) "Strawberry Chips") before the feature.
I'll leave it for the others to describe Perdita Durango, I'll just say that fans of Javier Bardem in No Country should see him in this. At about midnight, I decided to watch Atonement - it was the last Best Picture nominee for me to see (btw, it's out already on DVD in the UK - get it now at Amoeba - or not), but that's for a different thread. At the moment, it looks like the next movie night will be on March 8 - watch this thread for details. |
Perdita Durango was quite a mélange of action, spiked wit and even pop culture references. I dreamt of Javier Bardem all night, varying between his two ridiculous psycho-killer haircuts. Comparisons between Perdita and No Country can't be avoided; Tom pointed out, on the way home, that No Country seems a bit like he's playing an older, more grounded version of his Perdita character - and I quite agree.
|
The movie also drives home the important lesson - Look both ways before crossing the street.
|
So, if the next movie night is on my birthday, can I pic the movie(s)? :)
|
I didn't dream of being hit by a car or run over by a truck.
Good film. Gruesome and gritty and sexy all at the same time. Javier is wonderful - even with one of the most ridiculous haircuts ever. He actually "owned" the hair early on. I'm glad we saw the complete version. I can't imagine this film making sense with the bad edits. |
This Saturday, March 8, we'll be watching two rarely-seen new wave (as in the 80s music, not the cinema genre) classics. Two American flicks... both about a couple of girls who want to make it big as punk rock stars.
First up is Times Square (1980), starring Trini Alvarado and Robin Johnson, with the great Tim Curry playing DJ Johnny LaGuardia. It features an incredible soundtrack, including a duet between Robin Johnson and NY Dolls star David Johansen. Our second feature is Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains (1982), starring Diane Lane and Laura Dern. It also has great cameos by Fee Waybill & Vince Welnick of The Tubes, as well as Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols and Paul Simonon from the Clash (Steve, Paul and Paul play in a band fronted by the actor who would play Beowulf in last year's animated epic). One caveat: the copy I have of The Fabulous Stains is from a rare television broadcast. I expect to have a better quality version by the weekend, but should it not be the case, I might replace it with Breaking Glass (1980) or Starstruck (1982). Same time as always. Snacks and sodas will be waiting. (This weekend will be the only Movie Night for the month of March - we'll resume after the Easter/Spring Break) |
Hmmmm, I seem to recall a certain birthday girl requesting a certain film be screened.
or did i dream it? |

That's a name i haven't thought about in, oh, 25 years or more. |
Have a lovely time, all - this'll be the first casa de mousepod movie Tom and I have missed.
|
Sounds lovely, but as usual, the mouse owns me that evening.
|
I believe Chris and i will be there - depending on how he's feeling from his excursion to Boston.
|
I case "Hmmmmmmm" wasn't committal enough, Jen and I plan on attending.
|
Unfortunately I do not think I can make it -- next month though you'll be able to count me in!
|
I will be going to Magic Mountain bright and early Sunday morning. I'm not sure if I will be making this viewing. If I don't get enough sleep, the coasters will make me ill.
I will consult the CoasterMatt-meister and let you know. :) |
Oooh, I want to see all four of those eighties music oriented titles. I have fond memories of all of them. Sweet.
|
Just talked to H (who has been away from home for work the last 10 out of 12 days) and we've decided to postpone this movie night.
Sorry if this screws up anyone's plans - we'll reschedule our 80s new wave movie night very soon. (Maybe we'll make it an all-day quadruple feature). |
No worries. You guys have some time together!
|
J and H need some quality time together. I think canceling is a good idea.
:) |
No worries here. Chris has been in Boston all week. I'm sure staying home isn't a problem for him either.
|
Aw, i think it's sweet you two spending a Saturday night alone togther.
Don't make a habit of it. :p |
Bah, I smell favoritism. Isn't it a little convenient that the one that Heidi and Tom can't make gets canceled, salvaging their perfect record? Harumph.
|
original calendar:
Apr. 12 Apr. 26 Given that the schedule is adjustable, will there possibly be a screening April 5th? I ask because I'm thinking of coming down that weekend for the Wendybethextravaganza (if there is one) and I'd hang around overnight for a movie at casa de mousepod. |

I know that there are lots of things going on this weekend, but if anyone's up for it, we're putting the Fabulous Stains/Times Square double feature back on the schedule for this Saturday.
Please respond here or in PM if you're coming - it doesn't take that many people to fill our "screening room"... (and if there's a major outcry to reschedule, post it here, too). |
Unfortunately, I will be attending a murder mystery party at a friend's house this Saturday. But I will be at the next movie night. Promise.
:) |
I can't make it unfortunately... I'm getting some cake this Saturday nite. Mmmmmm... cake. ;)
|
Next two Saturdays tied up for me.
Um, the second one being, ya know, MouseAdventure. |

Yeah, MouseAdventure... that's like soooo 2002.

I'm keeping my options open since WenchyBeth is in town. I may end up visiting with the travelers. Sorry I can't commit.

Obviously, I can't come, but, if you set up your webcam to face your TV screen, I could watch from here. (Okay, not really.)
|
Feed me, feed me!
Can't you hear me hoooowl? Feed me, I''m a damn dog now! Yes, I remember that song from a single theatrical viewing of Times Square from back whenever it was released. ('81?) |

I'm not nearly as cool as everyone else who is going to some party or eating cake.. but I'll be at home going coocoobananas over homework.
One of these days I'll make it to a movie showing. ONE OF THESE DAYS /waves fist. |
We actually camped out overnight in line at the El Capitan (then the Paramount) for the opening of Times Square, because as Rocky Horror fans, we were devout Tim Curry fanatics.
We slept on the steps of the Masonic Temple next door (now the studios of the Jimmy Kimmel show) and, in the morning, someone from the Temple hosed down the steps without bothering to wake us up. Not a wise thing to do to Steve Zlick circa 1980 or so. That afternoon, after everyone from the Temple had gone home ... I found the hose, turned the water on full power, and stuck the hose through the mail slot into the Temple. Then left to enjoy the movie. Except, of course, the movie sucked. |
OK... so far, all "nays". Anyone want to vote to postpone this baby 'til the 19th?
|
I vote to postpone the month of April until such time as we aren't completely swamped. (in other words, we abstain as we are not free any time soon)
|
The 19th is passover, so we're available. ;)
The following week is Coachella. Then comes May. |
I'm free sometime in August, i think.
|
Oh crap. Thanks, NA. I guess Passover might preclude the 19th. How about a non-Saturday evening this month? Any suggestions? Anyone? Bueller?
|
We were trying to set an artist way meeting time and had a LOT of difficulty finding time in the month of April. With WenchyBeth and Company in Town, Pru in Town, Mouse Adventure, Passover, Coachella....suddenly it is May!
May at least looks a bit more promising for us....unless I go to France. |
Pfft, every month looks more promising when it's the next month.
|
Is anyone having a Seder? I'd love to go to one.
|
Sigh, not this year. But next year it will be 5 years since the last BIG one, and thus time for another BIG one.
And we'll be having it on a weekend day that won't be one of the first two nights of Passover ... so no excuses this time from people who have other seders to go to ... because there won't be any other seders that night! Hahahaha! |

yes, but with matzoh.

Ours is always more like a "It's a Jerry Springer Seder" then a "A very special Blossom" Seder.
Hopefully my wonderful cousin remembers to bring the vodka. Is vodka kosher for passover? B, I love you, therefore I say you really don't want to come to ours. It's also very non-Sedery. Many congregations used to have open Seders for those in the community who wanted to attend. Not as fun as going with friends though. |
I think I need to create a hedonist holiday to compete with Easter and Passover - oh wait, May Day is coming soon, not to mention Walpurgisnacht.

Can the word Schiska apply to GC? (Spelled like a schisika would spell it, of course.)

Now, it happens that most kosher wines do this anyway (thus, the super-sweet varieties like Manischewitz or Kadeem). But then there is the large contingency of Jews, especially in America, that do not strictly keep Kosher for most of the year, but do observer most of the Passover rules, which means that they'll want to avoid "normal" (i.e., non-kosher) wines, because you have no way of knowing whether they use kosher for Passover yeasts. Hmmm, I think that, just to make this thread retroactively on-topic, there should be a screening of the 10 Commandments at la casa. Or at least Prince of Egypt. Or maybe Ben-Hur. |
Ooooh, I want a double feature of The Ten Commandments and Prince of Egypt!
My unconventional seder features clips from both, btw. And though my family kept Kosher for Passover (but not regularly Kosher) when I was growing up, I have eschewed that restriction. So we drink palatable wine (and lots of it ... 4 glasses per person are proscribed!!). And we feast on foods that are not necessarily Kosher for Passover. We've combined the 2 halves of the seder into one long, pre-feast segment ... because we've found over the years that no one's really into more seder after a lot of wine and tons of food. Oh, and I've designed and manufactured a custom Haggadah (the guidebook, if you will, to the seder) that's, if I do say so myself, a work of art - with imagery taken from various Haggadahs I've liked, but mostly from a 14th Century Manuscript of surpassing gorgeousness. Oh, and as I said, we pepper our seder with film clips from The Ten Commandments and The Prince of Egypt. To my mind, the purpose of the seder is to communicate the story of to new and succeeding generations ... and I feel video is a recently-concocted way to fulfill that mandate for future humanity. As such, our seder is a multi-media folk traditional extravaganza of music and joy and carousing and feasting. It's wonderful. And yikes, Gemini Cricket practically talked me into throwing one together for this year. Anyone interested??? :iSm: |
Quote:
But I think that the Jews have too damned many rules. |
iSm, if you're doing one, I'm in. H will be out of town - and I'm not leaving the dogs behind to trek to the East Coast.
...and I still do want to have a movie get-together this month. A Friday? A Sunday brunch/movie? A school night? All good by me. |
Depending on the decided day, I'm in.
|
Quote:
|
mp, we're trying to throw one together for Saturday, April 19. We figure we need six to eight folks to make a go of it. If you're in, that makes 4 ... but I left it up to G.C. to scour up the guests. If he's successful (and that date works for people), then it's ON, BABY!
|
When you say you want a double feaure of The Ten Commandments and Prince of Egypt, you'd best specify whether you mean the Charlton Heston version (or the previous C.B. DeMille silent epic), or last year's critically reviled animated version. It flopped at theaters, and it's easy to see why. With Prince of Egypt around, there was no need for another animated Moses movie.
|
No, I mean a camcorder filming of the Val Kilmer musical theater version. ;)
Ok, to be precise ... I mean the Cecille B DeMille remake of his earlier silent The Ten Commandments, this time starring Charleton Heston and Yul Brynner. And the initial Dreamworks animated feature The Prince of Eygpt. (my seder features 3 clips from the former and 1 from the latter) |
What about that movie "Moses" with Ben Kingsley in the title role and Christopher Lee as Ramses?
For audio, there's the neat (and creepy) cd Plague Songs. Sadly, though the title might imply otherwise, there's no Passover connection to Let My People Come. (Though perhaps at a seder organized by iSm...) |
I sent mojo to iSm, but I, too, would like to partake in My First Seder.
|
Ok, here's the thing ... and I do this purely for my love of Mr. Cricket. I'm happy to throw a seder this year ... if it won't serve as spoilorz for next year's.
Ya see, once every five years, my family throws a HUGE SEDER that's a theatrical presentation of enormity with pleasure palace dimensions, diversions, and enjoyments. Four years ago, many LoT Swankers were among the 60 guests! It was an extravaganza I daresay none of them will soon forget. I know many more Swankers whom I'd love to attend our next one, which is going to be next year. And, because I'd like to have more of the JEWS, it will -for the first time ever- be happening on one of the non-seder nights of Passover.* Sigh... I don't want a seder this year to spoil the appetite, so to speak, for the more extravagant version of, well, essentially the same seder next year. BUT ... that being said, I feel like Gemini Cricket's request must be honored ... and if folks can make it for a seder on Saturday, April 19 with the proviso that they must keep an open heart for next year's invitation ... Let's Do It. * It's only recently I learned the two nights of seder I grew up with is a fairly recent revision to the roughly 5,000 year history of the cultural tradition of Passover. The second night of the seder is observed only by the jewish diaspora, and not by those in the Holy Land. Pfft, I now feel perfectly comfortable picking any damn night of the 8-day Passover to hold a seder. This year, the first night actually falls on Saturday. Next year, I will jetison even more of the constricting restrictions to better serve our pleasure and convenience on whatever Saturday falls during those 8 days. |
I'm so excited. I can't wait! My first Seder.
:) |

Hahahaha, yes, wanna come down? I'm dying to meet you, btw.
Yeah, not much Hebrew in our seder. We've cut the songs down to the Greatest Hits 5, and provided phoenetics. I only know the choruses, and it goes by too fast to actually read the phoenetics, so we mostly spout Hebraic-sounding jibberish during the verses. There's always like 18 verses to each song, so sometimes we just randomly cut a few of those out. The only other Hebrew in our seder are the brouchas (blessings) over the wine we drink in abundance, and the ceremonial foods that are mostly icky. We recite the names of the nasty plagues in Hebrew. And lastly, the kaddush which opens the seder ... which this year will be peformed by our special guest and instigator, Gemini Cricket ... who, as I understand it, doesn't speak a word of Hebrew. But he's an ACKTOR ... so he'll learn the part!! :snap: |
Sounds like great fun, but no So-Cal seder for me this year. We'll do our usual charoset and maror and quick lesson for the kids. And as I eat the charoset and maror I will reflect, as I reflect each year:
"Sh!t, this is good. I should have this more often." But then I won't. Sight unseen, I'm sure GC will do great. He can't be a worse Jew than Olivier. |
I think I can go only if there is NO circlejerking.
I will stay clothed. |
Love to have ya ....
(but i can't promise about the circle thingy. Jews in ancient times did that to taunt the Egyptians. I think cumming on the graven image of the first born was one of the plagues, if i'm not mistaken.) |
I'd love to attend if there's still room.
|
Yes, by all means.
All the way from San Diego? I'd be honored! |
Give me some Manischewitz and matzo soup and I'll be in heaven. Sign me up for the big one next year! ;)
Are latkes for Passover too? I love me some latkes. |
I didn't realize you were gonna do it on the 19th. I gots to help my mom prepare for our Seder on Sunday.
It sounds like a blast, next year would be awesome! Hey T, if you remind me, I can get my mom's recipe for latkas if you like. |
Quote:

If you bring your lovely wife, you're in. :)
And, technically, lattkes are not for Passover. Um, but I don't stand by technicalities. |
Mmmm horseradish and gefilte fish :)
I think I'll refrain from the Matzah this year. There's nothing more anally retentive than a constipated Jew. |
Quote:
|
Well, we have several (yikes) guests who will be refraining from the wine, in defiance of GOD's will, no less.
So if you want to refrain from matzoh, that doesn't mean you can't come to Gemini Cricket's seder! Would you like to? |

Latkes: Shred potatoes. Shred onions (to taste, I like a little bit less onion than potato). Mix in a bowl with just enough flour to get everything to bind together. And egg can help. Form the mix into pancakes about 3 inches in diameter. Fry wide frying pan with olive oil about 3/4"-1" deep until they look delicious. Eat.

|
me, too. Since if NA & €uro are in, I think we're full-up (leaving a space for Cherny).
It would seem poor form to announce a seder via a thread, but not allow anyone else to join in. Heheh, the Cricket was supposed to invite people .... but I told him there was nothing like posting it surrepticiously on the LoT in a thread that had nothing to do with it. Plus an easter egg is perfect for Passover. The two holidays are inextricably linked!! |
Aww, I'll never get to attend a friend's seder. :( Family obligations to two seders trump all.

Tits - porn
Boobies - for fun |
OR...
Tits - to feed children Boobies - to play with |
Or
Tits: Spoiler:
Boobies: Spoiler:
|
Jeez Alex: you are always preaching about how spoilerizing images like that still get seen by corporate filters and you go and post those. C'mon man; make up your mind.
|
I still say that "boobs" or "boobies" makes the breasts, and the woman sporting them, sound airheaded and infantile.
Of course, there is always mother's word of choice: bosoms. |
Well, if we are discussing preferred vernacular, I have always been partial to "sweater puppies"
|
I with Carrie's mother: Dirty Pillows is the way to go.
|
Among women I've had the issue of word selection up with boobs has generally been much preferred to tits.
I agree that boobies sounds infantile but I really only use the word ironically or when being silly (and I think the infantilization is more of the person saying the word than the person the word is said of). Lani and I have a code phrase used for indicating noteworthy breasts are in the area. But I can't share what it is since then it would no longer be a code. |
Your survey probably doesn't take account of regional biases. I never heard "boobs" or "butt" until I moved to California. And they don't sing about "Boobs and Butt" in A Chorus Line either.
|
Well, everybody I knew in Washington growing up used boobs much more preferentially than tits (and ass would also be used over butt). And I've never heard Lani say tits on her own and she comes to American vocabulary via British schools and Hawaii.
But yeah, I'm sure that as with all over vocabulary choices there are regional variations. |
Quote:
|
Yep, boobs and butts were California infantile niceties that I encountered when I moved here from New York, where the more crass tits and ass were commonplace.
Sometimes I miss the direct approach. |
I like "rack" or "jugs" too :)
|
Michigan used butt and ass interchangeably. But not tits - and I still think it's crass. Boobs don't sound sophomoric to me, though boobies definitely do.

All of the words that mean breasts don't mean the same kinds of breasts to me. I don't have a "rack" or "sweater puppies". (BTW Kevy, I'm never letting a real puppy near you, if that's what you do to puppies.)
I reserve the word "tits" for fantastic breasts. Some may find it crass but to me it's the real deal. The word works on a very primal level, I think. I stick to "boobs" because it's preferred vernacular, but I'm up for using any word, really. And I still think we need more varied, better words for the other bit of female genitalia. |
I wonder what this thread will be about the day after tomorrow!! :D

What's a good pairing with that? Babe?? |
What about Ferngully?
|
As Good as it Gets. Probably the greatest movie role for a dog ever. Sure it wasn't a marquee role like Turner & Hooch or Snow Dogs, but no role has ever signaled more clearly that dogs are no longer second class acting citizens, good only for racially stereotyped comedy relief, or servants treated on screen like so much set dressing. This was a solid supporting character that just happened to be a dog, not some degrading pupsploitation film.
|
Movie night -> seder rituals -> boobs -> species stereotyping in film
*sigh* only on LoT  |
The dog in The Mask was great. But then if mousepod screened it, we'd have to watch it.
We could watch Where the Red Fern Grows the remake, which stars Dave Matthews! It's not great, but Dave's in it! |
Yay! Endeadened dogs!

I still think we should watch The Magnificent Ambersons and The Third Man.

OK - I got the Orphanage on Blu-Ray (as a blind buy based on raves from Heidi and Tom, among others), but my PS3 optical drive died. I just got an email from Sony that my replacement unit has been shipped so...
This Saturday - The Orphanage @ La Case de MousePod. Sodas - snacks - other movies. I'll start "officially" showing movies late afternoon - the Orphanage will go on when it gets dark. See you there! |

I wanna go tonight, but I'm stuck in Chatsworth :(

Mousepod brunch 9/6
I'm going to merge this thread into the "movies at casa de mousepod" thread tomorrow morning... but I just want to make sure that everyone knows that we're having a movie brunch tomorrow morning at 10:30 am.
We're gonna have bagels with all the fixings and a movie... So far, the RSVPs are Not Afraid €uro iSm GC me mrs mousepod anyone else? I need to know how much food to buy... |
And i need to know if i should bring anything.
Write now as I right this, I'm leaning towards bringing the fixin's for mimosas (yeah, yeah, the host and the cat lady won't have any ... heheh, more for the rest of us!) Or, if that sounds like a distasteful (if tasty) idea, just let me know and I'll refrain. |

Thank you Senor and Senora Pod!!! Had a wonderful morning and afternoon.

Thanks for the movie brunch! It truly felt like waking up at camp, since most of the same players went to see Assassins last night.

Yes, thank you for a wonderful Friday night, Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, and Saturday night! We just got home, time to dream of top-down umbrella shots and strawberry jam. (And chips.)

Oh well. |
One of the regulars at the Casa de Mousepod screenings has never seen any David Lynch movie (one of my favorite directors).
We talked about the different options for introducing her to Lynch: Eraserhead (his first), Blue Velvet (his breakthrough), even the Pilot episode of "Twin Peaks". But last month, when I finally saw Maya Deren's "Meshes of the Afternoon", and found out how much she loves it, I decided to go with Lost Highway. The problem is, Lost Highway is a movie that Mrs. Mousepod doesn't want to revisit anytime soon. So yesterday, with the Mrs. out of town on a mission for the Mouse, we decided to have an impromptu screening of the movie (with H's blessing, of course). Alas, by the time we got the Twitter invite out, nobody else could make it. Undaunted, we decided to watch it anyway... but by the time we both finished our household duties, it was after 9 pm, too late to start the 2 hour+ movie. So it's tonight. 7:30 pm. We're going to watch the 15 minute Maya Deren film first, with Lost Highway starting no later than 8pm. |
Hmmm, I'm seriously considering it. If you start at 8 as opposed to 7:30, I'll be more inclined. (Getting from West L.A. to Silverlake on a weeknight is not pretty. Hmm, I suspect the guest of honor might have some travel tips on that route.)
|
Quote:
I just don't want to start the feature too late - it's 135 minutes long... |
Do I hear 7:45?
7:45 going once .... |
Sorry i missed. I had to work late, then run an errand taking me even further west in the wrong direction. Never would have made it on time.
|
It was really very terrifying. I enjoyed it (and was duly freaked out.)
|
Oooh - Lost Highway - creepy, beautiful, fascinating movie. I've only seen it once, but it has stuck with me something powerful.
I got the Eraserhead DVD last year and rewatched it for the first time in about 25 years. (Back in High School, I listed it as my favorite movie in various yearbook lists and school paper end of year lists. I was half kidding.) Anyway, I was surprised to find that Eraserhead is really funny. It's dark and disturbing, sure, but, gosh, I kept finding myself laughing and smiling. I want an actual director's cut of Dune. I don't think it's ever going to happen, though. |
