Stormy Weather

Good thoughts going out to all the Californians weathering that big storm. Stay dry and stay safe.

Not Afraid 01-04-2008 06:44 PM

I'm waiting for BIG. It would be nice to get some nice hard rain.

Oh, and to go with the weather, here's Martha Wainwright doing a SMOKING version of Stormy Weather.

CoasterMatt 01-04-2008 06:45 PM

It's pouring here- I have my door open, and I love the sound

I'm even listening to Eddie Rabbit - "I Love A Rainy Night"

LSPoorEeyorick 01-04-2008 07:04 PM

OMG, those Wainwrights. They're all so talented. Thanks for pointing me in the direction, NA; I'd never heard Martha before but I do so love her parents and her brother.

Not Afraid 01-04-2008 07:08 PM

I saw Rufus do Judy at the Bowl a few months back and the whole family was there (sans Dad). Martha did "Stormy Weather" as well as "Someone to Watch Over Me" and blew my right out of the Bowl. I had to miss her a few days later in a solo concert and i was very disappointed. She usually does more folk style music, but she does a great job of channeling Judy (as does her brother).

I love the sound of the rain too, but nooooooo, not Eddie Rabbit!

My favorite rain song.

I had to watch it twice to get the Rabbit out of my head.

Kevy Baby 01-04-2008 07:18 PM

Riders on the Storm - The Doors

alphabassettgrrl 01-04-2008 07:20 PM

Looking at the radar pictures, I was really hoping for something good. It's just an ordinary average rain so far, and we're quite far into the middle of it.

€uroMeinke 01-04-2008 08:07 PM

I had a moment of Synchronicity tonight driving home in the rain - the traffic not bad and NPR doing a feature on Jane Siberry (now known as Issa). They played her duet with k.d. lang - Calling All Angels, which I've know from the UNtil the End of the World Soundtrack - which for reason's unknown to me, is my favorite soundtrack to listen to while driving in the rain, and this song, the favorite of the soundtrack to listen to in those conditions. It made me smile and feel very happy in the rain.

Not Afraid 01-04-2008 08:27 PM

Rosemary Clooney doing Come Rain or Come Shine.

And Ann Peebles "I Can't Stand the Rain".(I actually love the version of this song on The Commitment's Soundtrack.)

Dusty Springfield "I Think It's Going to Rain Today"

(Pour your misery down on me.)

There are some GREAT rain songs out there! (I think I've got Chris doing a music library search now!)

Stan4dSteph 01-04-2008 08:57 PM

U2 - MLK

Sleep, sleep tonight
And may your dreams be realised.
If the thunder cloud passes rain
So let it rain, rain down on he.
So let it be.
So let it be.

Sleep, sleep tonight
And may your dreams be realised.
If the thunder cloud passes rain
So let it rain, let it rain
Rain down on he.

Not Afraid 01-04-2008 08:59 PM

Chris added one.
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs

wendybeth 01-04-2008 10:49 PM

The only one I can think of is from the original Pooh movie:

The rain, rain, rain came down, down, down
In rushing, rising riv'lets,
'til the river crept out of it's bed
And crept right into Piglet's!
Poor Piglet, he was frightened,
With quite a rightful fright.
And so, in desperation
A message he did write.
He placed it in a bottle
And it floated out of sight.

And the rain, rain, rain came down, down, down
So Piglet started bailing.
He was unaware, atop his chair,
While bailing he was sailing!

And the rain, rain, rain came down, down, down
And the flood rose up, up, upper.
Pooh, too, was caught and so he thought,
"I must rescue my supper!"
Ten honey pots he rescued,
Enough to see him through,
But as he sopped up his supper,
The river sopped up Pooh!
And the water twirled and tossed him
In a honey pot canoe!

Yay! Welcome to StormWatch 08!!

mousepod 01-04-2008 11:15 PM

Wow! I love Dusty's take on "I Think It's Going To Rain" - not sure whose version I like best, hers, Bobby Darin's or Randy Newman's....

Here's Tom Waits doing Strange Weather.

Not Afraid 01-04-2008 11:17 PM

I heard Madeleine Peyroux do "I Think It's Going to Rain" in concert and it was brilliant.

Sting - Heavy Cloud, No Rain

Alex 01-04-2008 11:25 PM

It's just a storm, but listening to people at work talk today you'd think Armageddon was upon us.

I can't even imagine how the local news is going haywire over it (I haven't watched any).

The Police - Shadows In The Rain

Morrigoon 01-04-2008 11:29 PM

A Little Fall of Rain from Les Miserables

And Alex insists I also post Another Rainy Night by Queensryche

Morrigoon 01-04-2008 11:41 PM

In my search for a solid Bambi clip, I came across this little Mel Torme beauty, also called April Showers. Never heard it before, but it swings a little. I like it :)

Sadly, this is the best I could come up with for Bambi's April Showers.*

(*-Kevy, consider this one a freebie!)

edit: Oh sure, NOW I find a real clip of it.

Not Afraid 01-04-2008 11:44 PM

OH! That's a great little tune!

Morrigoon 01-04-2008 11:54 PM

Ah, another lovely one... Rainy Days and Mondays by the Carpenters.

And special for Alex S, my Alex would like to dedicate Party At Ground Zero

Alex 01-05-2008 12:02 AM

Is there a joke in that I'm not getting (I'm assuming I'm the Alex S in question)?

Morrigoon 01-05-2008 12:03 AM

Raindrops Keep Fallin On My Head - song 10, staging 3. This, kids, is the ancestor of your modern music video.

RAIN by Dana Glover.

MacArthur Park by Richard Harris - Someone left the cake out in the rain!! ;)

BTW, IMO, this is one of the WORST songs ever recorded, so don't blame me if you listen to the whole thing and need years of therapy.

That is truly one of the worst things I've ever heard, even worse than Eddie Rabbit. Thank you for the warning, but you know I had to listen for a minute anyway.

How about Donna Summer's cake?

You mentioned the end of the world. Party at Ground Zero is about the end of the world due to nuclear holocaust.

We were at DL in the rain last night, meeting friends for dinner. It was pretty crazy, windy and wet. :) Haven't done that in years.

Alex 01-05-2008 11:15 AM

Oh, me dim. But I mentioned Armageddon which is a very specific ending of the world and I wasn't opening my thinking up enough. Plus I got bored about 30 seconds into the song and didn't watch the whole thing.

Gn2Dlnd 01-05-2008 11:53 AM

Rainy night synchronicity: Last night we were watching a screener of "Transformers" on the biggie TV. As downtown L.A. is getting destroyed on screen, HUGE flashes of bluepinkwhite light from our living room window, accompanied by the power going on and off. This went on (and off) for a good 45 minutes. I do like a good multi-media presentation!

Silly but enjoyable blow-em-up movie that my friend has for the sound category. I even heard the Wilhelm!

Funny line when the dad looks out into the backyard and says, "Oh, we've got a blew transformer." Blue Transformer. Get it? GET IT?

BarTopDancer 01-05-2008 02:51 PM

It started raining when I got to Anaheim. Sideways drizzle followed us in and out of the Honda Center. We were at DTD last night, left there about 1am. Scariest drive ever. Wind, rain, no desire to ever do that again.

Morrigoon 01-05-2008 04:48 PM

I go to work in about 2 hours, and there are almost no "inside" positions on trains, LOL. :)

It's pouring in San Jose right now. Yesterday was really bad. Half of San Jose had no power.

RStar 01-05-2008 10:01 PM

I recorded 1" in Garden Grove.

DPR, do you have a weather station hooked up to your computer, where that info came from? I so want one......

blueerica 01-05-2008 10:02 PM

Snowed here big time last night. I heard it's supposed to rain again there tomorrow, so that means we'll get some more... say... tomorrow night-ish.

Other than that, it was pretty warm these last couple of days and tonight's cool-down included the special treat of icy-roads... Woo-hoo! Or something like that...

yes, it's a Davis Vantage Pro2. We send data to the National Weather Service via the San Diego Mesonet.

wendybeth 01-06-2008 03:22 AM

Right now it's a balmy 26 degrees up here- and the really sad thing is that there is no sarcasm intended. Normally, it's hovering around 10.

Thankfully, no. I grew up in Western Michigan, which means not quite as cold as the east, but more snow than most people would imagine. Go lake effect! Apparently, there's also the lake effect phenomenon here from the Salt Lake, which I wouldn't have expected, since it seems so shallow to me.

On the other hand, it's been a while since I've been in the cold, and I'm shocked at how I'm simultaneously okay with it and sooooo not okay with it.

This morning featured the biggest fluffiest snow I've seen in a long time. It was purdy. Now, time to go drive in the stuff!

alphabassettgrrl 01-06-2008 08:17 PM

BE- that's good; you already know about driving in snow. I've always found it funny how the body adjusts to the cold. After a week or so home, it doesn't seem quite so miserable.

RStar 01-06-2008 08:41 PM

It's been raing steadily now for a couple of hours. I picted up my son and his Girl friend from the park about 30 minutes ago. The parks were pretty empty today, mostly walk ons. The longest wait was 30 minutes for Nemo.

Ha!! 30 minutes for Nemo?! I wonder how they was, if it was raining while they were on it?

It is storming here more now, too. My windows are moving {older home, I'm not high or anything} and I can hear the wind.

I forgot all about the Charger game and that would have been fun to watch; a game in San Diego played in the rain!! I heard it started to rain right at the game was starting.

I'm cold. I'd love some cider, please. :D

Thank you. :)

Snowflake 01-07-2008 08:19 AM

partially clear skies here, now, light drizzle on the way to work. Office parking lot had a few downed palm trees and a few that lost their heads.
