So what are the new trends in SoCal this season?

I've been out of the West Coast fashion loop for a few years. What are some of the new trends?

When I left it was flare bottomed black pants and bright jersey knit tops and platform flip-flops.

BarTopDancer 01-08-2008 10:54 AM

The 80s called. They want their decade back.

Morrigoon 01-08-2008 10:55 AM

Boy isn't that the truth!

NirvanaMan 01-08-2008 10:56 AM

Dudes seem to be wearing chick pants. What the hell is up with that? Where do the boys go?

NOOOOOO!!!! I've been seeing teenage boys with those longish in their faces straight locks again. I was hoping it was another wave of anime influence and that we'd be spared yet more 80s trends.

The 80s were bad for fat people. This may explain why Wal-mart's fat girl section has been sucking as of late. I will choose to ignore fashion and hope mall bangs don't make a comeback. I skipped that one the last time around.

€uroMeinke 01-08-2008 11:00 AM

Steampunk!

Now I feel bad for being so ecstatic that long shirts and long sweaters were back, for people like me with long torsos. Yay, I can get things for work that are not only stylish, but don't make me worry about exposing my belly button.

Here's a basic online example (I don't actually shop at the Gap).

blueerica 01-08-2008 11:16 AM

You know, I don't think mall bangs are back.... but..... I was at the mall this weekend and I saw a glorious waterfall bang. I was stunned and couldn't say anything until we passed. J totally missed it.

As for fashion, right now I'm doing so so with it. What they're talking about is what the teenie boppers are wearing, and sorry guys, few of us here qualify as teenie-boppers, so I stopped worrying about following that one too closely. If I had the money (and a job) to do it, right now I'd stick with basic pants. It seems like flare might have made a tiny comeback, but have a general distaste for that look as well. I kind of like the high-waisted, tucked blouse in look, but I'm not the right height for it.

Oh yeah, so if I had the money?

I'd buy some basic, classic items. Slacks. Good pair of heeled boots or some flats. (Ballerina flats look good on just about anyone) Maybe touch it up with jewelry and accessories that are hip and leave it at that. Oh, and a pair of cords for extra snuggly measure. I love corduroys and realized when unpacking that I'd packed one pair of pants I wanted to ditch, and left a good pair of cords back in Cali.

blueerica 01-08-2008 11:17 AM

Oh, but long sweaters and shirts are awesome. The kinds that are popular now are SOOO not the stupid ones from the 80s. It's a good look for people of varying weights.

Cadaverous Pallor 01-08-2008 11:19 AM

Hey, random thought - what if we decided that we should each get one completely brand new, stylish outfit and post a pic of us in it? Perhaps give us a month to accomplish it? Don't forget the accessories!

If people are interested perhaps I'll start a thread. I need more clothes anyway.

Morrigoon 01-08-2008 11:19 AM

Yeah, ballet flats are in lately. I'm wearing mine right now, in fact.

Morrigoon 01-08-2008 11:20 AM

Nice idea CP, but I just bought myself some new clothes already :) At Walmart, amazingly enough. Nothing too trendy though, basic casual businesswear.

What if we each took a photo of ourselves in our favorite stylish outfit, though? Either new or existing. I'd be up for that :)

Actually, though the long shirts look different on bigger women, they aren't bad for us. I like being able to have my garment come down to my hips! i'll just create my own style! :)

I likes this idea, I do, I do! Then I'll have a "before" picture, too... :)

BarTopDancer 01-08-2008 11:45 AM

I stick with boot cut jeans (I love BR and Lucky but I hate spending that kind of $$).

Sweaters, button down blouses, t-shirts. Screw the 80's. I wear what's comfortable, fits and looks cute. I find Kohl's has a lot of cute, yet age appropriate stuff.

Sohrshah 01-08-2008 11:49 AM

Agreed. I have great luck at Kohl's. I also like Lord and Taylor, but I don't think they have those on the West Coast.

I don't remember- does Mervyn's have a Plus section?

Morrigoon 01-08-2008 11:53 AM

Yes, that's where I got those silk blouses from - the green/gold, for example

Cadaverous Pallor 01-08-2008 11:57 AM

I can't wear ballet flats or basic pumps of any kind - I walk right out of them. Shopping for shoes sucks.

Morrigoon 01-08-2008 11:59 AM

Mary Janes, then :)

This is why I wear Mary Janes almost exclusively. Okay, and I just love wearing Mary Janes and Stripey Socks. But not to work. :D

Cadaverous Pallor 01-08-2008 12:09 PM

Ok, stupid style question time.

I keep trying on shoes similar to mary janes etc and I get annoyed. My toes are rather long for them and you can see where the toes branch off. I've always thought this looked wrong so I don't buy them.

That is, if I don't walk out of them. I need a decent strap to keep shoes on my feet. (I also need a store with wide width shoes. Ok, I'm totally going shoe shopping soon, and I mean it this time, to hell with the prices.)

Morrigoon 01-08-2008 12:13 PM

I have the same problem. Looks wrong to me too. But I'm not exactly a style maven... I wear socks :)

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 01-08-2008 12:13 PM

I will say this only once:

Leggings are NOT pants. Don't let celebrities tell you otherwise, fashion followers!

Morrigoon 01-08-2008 12:16 PM

At my weight, leggings are not anything. Except maybe underwear for a skirt ;)

Kevy Baby 01-08-2008 12:17 PM

Another new trend: writing on pants has gone from girls' butts to guys' crotches.

Ask NM about "Juicy"

And why are there no pictures of this?!?

Ah ok, that was the question, am I crazy for not wanting my toe stalks to show. :)

My feet really look bad in strappy shoes too, so I'm pretty much stuck with full-coverage shoes, and that always suffers from style waves. Right now it seems that many kinds of straps are coming back and that's a good thing for me.

Now IZ ON ZAPPOS, LOOKN AT TEH SHUZ

Chernabog 01-08-2008 12:21 PM

I think blowjobs are back in fashion. At least, that's what I keep telling myself.

I have short toes and especially lately, I've been having this problem, too. I think it must be parrt of the 80s comeback thing. :D

I love the trend back to wide leg pants. If I were to shop today it would a pair of wide leg pants with a higher waist, a fitted sweater or a pretty blouse with a straight hem and some stitching detail and a pair of ankle strap wedges with about a 2 inch heel.

That's sounds fabulous, and works well with you being all tall and stuff.

I've crossed the threshold werein I can't wear wide legs pants, but in smaller days I do remember liking them, in spite of being too short for the look. I love ankle strap shoes, particularly mary janes (see previous posts)

I do love that trend.

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 01-08-2008 04:32 PM

Oral sex (giving and receiving) is one trend that never goes out of style.

I think Diana Vreeland would agree with me.

Why wouldn't a fashion guru be referenced in a style-related thread? Being the fashion icon that she was, I think it appropriate that she too would have good things to say about the trendiness of oral delights.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 01-08-2008 05:04 PM

Everyone is wearing Chicago shirts this season. Get with it...

Morrigoon 01-08-2008 05:13 PM

And by everyone, he means everyone with the name Borneio ;)

It's almost halfway through January, and I haven't worn my wife's pants this year- I think that trend's died.

wendybeth 01-11-2008 01:33 AM

Perhaps you can wear Nirvanaman's?

Deebs 01-11-2008 05:08 AM

I know this is San Francisco street style, but wasn't sure we needed another thread.

I have some clear favorites...

I'm thinking some of these folks might actually be working. I enjoy the hipsters sporting that 80's Jazzercise revival look, with a little drag queen mixed in.

Kevy Baby 01-11-2008 10:12 AM

How come no one posted a picture of the Juicy Pants? There HAS to be a photo somewhere.

BarTopDancer 01-11-2008 10:18 AM

I am wearing Lucky pants.

Sorry Deebs - I do enjoy fun fashion to a certain degree but most of these look like clowns to me! Guess I'm no fashionista.

Street style not working here, although some of them look like they might be working the street.

Very nice picture of you!

With a face like this, how can she look bad?

She can pretty much wear what she wants. Jealous much? ;)

And there just is no excuse:

Oh, OK, it's a party. There is a balloon. I will try to reserve judgment. I won't be hatin'.

Wow. I definitely I'll look into that last one- the clown outfit. Right.

So socal is still pretty much living up the Post Modern "anything goes" thing. Fabulous, because I refuse to wear pointy toed shoes. Ouch!
