Apple's New MacBook Air

Today, Apple introduced the MacBook Air. Even though it includes a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display that has a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, full sized backlit keyboard, Intel Core 2 Duo running at 1.6GHz, etc. this thing:
  • Is only 3/4" thick at the fattest point (actually going to .016" at the thinnest)
  • Weighs only 3 f-in pounds!
Holy crap!!!

While the standard HD is an 80 MB Parallel ATA, there is also an option for a 64 GB solid-state disk drive. That's right kiddies - a 64 GB FLASH DRIVE!

And of course, it is beautiful:

In further news, updates to the iPhone (free) and iPod Touch ($20).

They have re-configured the Apple TV and brought the price down. They also introduced (to no-ones surprise) iTunes Movie Rentals. I am not that interested in this as even though it supports HD downloads, these downloads are only 720p. Wake me when you get to 1080p

I think I've found my next laptop - now to start saving

Not Afraid 01-15-2008 08:33 PM

Yes, then you can get an iMac for your desk too, and we can get airport extreme and network all printers wirelessly. NO MORE WIRES!

Kevy Baby 01-15-2008 08:58 PM

After I posted that, I saw that the SSD drive was $1K - yikes!

Peachy Keen 01-15-2008 09:22 PM

also i found out you cannot change the battery in it. :( not cool

It's very pretty. Now that I know it exists, it makes me a) want a plain black MacBook to replace my still-too-functional-for-its-own-good iBook G4, and b)get ready for the next iPod Touch with a really big SSD.

Like the look of that, but no way in hell am I going back to 1280x800 if that is really the max resolution.

CoasterMatt 01-15-2008 11:29 PM

It's pretty and all, but 1280x800? WTF?!?!

That would be like putting a 13" black & white tube tv in a McIntosh home theater...

Jazzman 01-16-2008 01:01 AM

Oooohhhhhhh.... Jazzman want. So pretty.

My only worry is how fragile it would be. My Dell is pretty rugged and while I haven't thrown it down the stairs or anything I know that it can handle a bump here and there. But that Mac is so thin and tiny that I'd worry about it snapping in two in my bag.

NickO'Time 01-16-2008 01:42 AM

**Drool** I have got too get me one of those!:D

Snowflake 01-16-2008 08:42 AM

In the words of BtD, it is very shiny!

NirvanaMan 01-16-2008 10:12 AM

Also no optical drive, no ethernet plug, only 1 USB, and the SSD is a whopping $1,000 option.

There are other laptops that are similar in size, weight and form factor. What is most interesting about this machine is the LED backlighting for the display and the multi-touch trackpad (same technology on iPhone).

nice... so shinny and thin.
