Cool idea! But why are you looking at stairs at 1:00 in the morning? ;)

Those are very dangerous looking stairs. I wouldn't want them!

Read the comments to see how common such stairs are in older construction (including being part of the reason you can no longer tour the upper floors of Monticello). Found that little unknown bit of architectural learning interesting.

The real beauty of it is, when you're drunk they look straight.

While alternating tread stairs (also called "monk's ladders") have been around forever, and are quite safe, they are nothing like the ones in the OP. Those are mayhem just waiting to happen!

I was just cruising boingboing, and that was on there. I wasn't specifically looking for stairs at that hour of the day.

Same concept, yes; but a horrible design. The triangular treads and sharp edges are an ergonomic disaster. And on top of that, no handrail!

Oh, I definitely agree with that. I'd hate to be bringing down a box of old books out of that attic.

It looks only slightly safer then the staircase I made to our attic out of banana peels.

I see me falling down them.

I can imagine going up okay, but going down the stairs... Uh, no thanks.

No handrail is a deal breaker for me. They're pretty though.
