Retro Robot

I have a feeling even Boss Radio might enjoy one of these!

Your very own Robby the Robot

Of course, not for the faint of heart financially, he's 24k!

Moonliner 01-25-2008 08:50 AM

Or, you can join their club and build your own. Geeks.

Cadaverous Pallor 01-25-2008 10:21 AM

I read the full list of what he can do...and I can't believe there isn't a video! I never watched the show, but this thing is awesome anyway.

Snowflake 01-25-2008 10:32 AM

Well, CP, if you've see Forbidden Planet (MGM overblown sci-fi of the 1950s in glorious technicolor) then you've seen Robby the Robot.

blueerica 01-25-2008 11:38 AM

Robby the Robot has also made appearances on TV shows of years past, such as Twilight Zone, Dobie Gillis, The Addams Family and many others.

There should be more information forthcoming on Robby the Robot on one of my favorite sites. I'm not sure why it isn't up yet. (Ahem!) But in the meanwhile, Robby entered the Robot Hall of Fame the same year as C-3PO, 2004. For a list of when he's been seen, Wikipedia seems to have a pretty good list going.

How funny! We were just watching Lost in Space last night.

Well, he would look pretty swanky (and pity you did not have one in the entry for NYE)

we used to watch it back in original release when I was a kid. my brothers and I just loved it

I tried to watch a bit of it recently. its just soo incredibly dated and..campy I guess would be a word for it, that I just cant do it.

innerSpaceman 01-25-2008 01:06 PM

Um, Robby the Robot is NOT the Lost in Space robot.

His name is ROBOT.

Robby the Robot is the other classic robot, predating Robot by many years. He premiered in Forbidden Planet (1956) and went on to appear in a couple of B-movies and a Twilight Zone episode (or was it Outer Limits?) Either way, the very cool, lifesize, $24,000 robot being offered on the linked website is the ultra cool ROBOT from Lost in Space.

Don't call him "Robby."

Capt Jack 01-25-2008 01:08 PM

I do believe he did appear on Lost In Space at least once.

innerSpaceman 01-25-2008 01:10 PM

Go ahead and make me a liar.

(But the replica being offered is still not Robby ... and perhaps Snowflake should stick to Valentino.) :p

mousepod 01-25-2008 01:17 PM

You can buy a Robby here. (You can also get a "Robot", a Cylon, a Gort, a Tobor...)

no lie. everything you said was absolutely correct.
I just "sort of" remember Robby showing up on Lost In Space in the early B&W episodes...

then again, thats memory based of the view of a (maybe 7?) year old.

:D iSm, you kill me.

To me, they are the same, sorry for not being entirely geeky about which Robby was which Robot. So shoot me.

Designed by the same dude, but side-by-side, definitely not the same.

Okay, DUH, you're right iSm. I'm lame. thanks GD & MP

Robby is way cool.

Boss Radio 01-25-2008 02:14 PM

Robby could synthesize food and make lovely gowns for Anne Francis.
All ROBOT really did was argue with Dr. Smith. But he did it beautifully.

Infernal bucket of bolts, indeed!

I met him at a screening of Forbidden Planet and The Day the Earth Stood Still. He was a jerk. Heh.

He reminded me of Comic Book Guy. (And not the good, hipster Jack-Black-voiced one with the girlfriend named Strawberry.)

Did ya do him/it anyways?

Cadaverous Pallor 01-25-2008 05:37 PM

Thank you to the above geeks for taking Snowflake to task - otherwise, I would have had to do it. I'm a big fan of Forbidden Planet.

That said, I'm backing up Capt Jack, from Wikipedia:
Quote:

The Forbidden Planet character Robby the Robot guest starred in two episodes: War of the Robots, and Condemned of Space. Robby was also designed by Robert Kino****a, who designed the Lost in Space robot nearly ten years later.

I didn't notice the error until your post after mine. I was too busy clicky-linky. :D

Boss Radio 01-26-2008 11:13 AM

It is awesome to see the life-size versions of such great icons of geekster childhood. And for the record, I was at that screening, but spent my time enjoying the company of Robby and Gort.

Thank you, Snowflake for finding this!

Oh, and I have much trepidation about the upcoming remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still with Keanu Reaves.

I fear it may descend into Klaatu and Gort's Excellent Adventure.

You have GOT to be kidding?!!!! This is SO not to my liking.

CoasterMatt 01-26-2008 11:58 PM

Is Keanu Reeves playing Gort?

innerSpaceman 01-27-2008 12:13 AM

Forget Keanu stepping into the ill-fitting shoes of Michael Rennie ... the bigger problem is who's gonna play Raquel Welsh in the upcoming remake of Fantastic Voyage?

Follow-up question: What will be the very last film to be remade??

Boss Radio 01-27-2008 03:08 AM

The Very Last Remake of Beau Geste.
