The Ax Man Cometh

I got laid off today at work.

It happened about an hour ago.

I had a feeling it was coming.

Stupid f*cking writers.

I'm bummed but I'm also relieved in a way. 20 clients are a lot to take care of. There are a couple of winners that I am going to truly miss. Others... not so much.

My former boss: "If there's anything you need... feel free to use me as a reference... this is hard for me to do... [tears - that was a nice touch]..."

I'm okay, though.
I'm going to make some calls.
Something good is coming next. I can feel it.
:)

Not Afraid 01-28-2008 08:03 PM

GAH! Well, it wasn't a surprise at least and, who knows, if the writers' strike ever gets resolved, maybe the company will come back to full strength soon. Meanwhile, you've got some great experience in your field of choice that will do you a lot of good. Hand in there.

mousepod 01-28-2008 08:07 PM

I'm sorry to hear that, GC. I know you were doing a great job and that your talent was recognized - was it a "last in, first out" situation?

Blah. I don't know what else to say. Hang in there.

Gemini Cricket 01-28-2008 08:11 PM

I guess that's it, mousepod. But I must admit, I couldn't give the best customer service spread so thin. I think it was a combination of both. I don't think my former boss knew how much I was doing.

BarTopDancer 01-28-2008 08:32 PM

Ugh GC. Sorry to hear it.

alphabassettgrrl 01-28-2008 08:35 PM

Bah. Bring on the next good thing! So who will be lucky enough to have you as an employee next? :)

CoasterMatt 01-28-2008 08:38 PM

I think GC should do something with bacon.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 01-28-2008 08:46 PM

All Cricket's always land on their feet.

DreadPirateRoberts 01-28-2008 08:48 PM

I'm sorry.

scaeagles 01-28-2008 08:52 PM

Bummer.

innerSpaceman 01-28-2008 08:53 PM

BAH. And the strike is going to end in a couple of weeks. Bah and double bah.

Except for, of course, if this is what happened ... then something better is coming for you.

In the meanwhile, feel free to lean on me for anything. :iSm:

Ghoulish Delight 01-28-2008 08:54 PM

Sucks. I imagine they had to do what they had to do, but they'll probably be scrambling to gear back up when the strike resolves itself (I'm still betting it'll happen before the Oscars).

Good luck in whatever the next step turns out to be.

LSPoorEeyorick 01-28-2008 08:57 PM

I'm sorry to hear this, but I KNOW that the next terrific thing is coming for you - the "doors and windows" adage may be trite but it always seems so true. Plus, this door may not be fully closed. The company valued you, and when it gets back on its feet, it will need you again. (That is, if somebody hasn't already filled up your dance card.)

madmonkeygirl 01-28-2008 09:19 PM

The Ax Man Cometh

Sorry to hear that GC. Keep your chin up. One door closes another one opens.

Mousey Girl 01-28-2008 10:16 PM

I know getting fired was one of the best things that has happened to me recently.

((hugs))

Gemini Cricket 01-28-2008 10:45 PM

So....
Is that Disneyland place open tomorrow?
:)

Not Afraid 01-28-2008 10:46 PM

No, it's closed. But Thurston's house is open. ;)

Jazzman 01-28-2008 11:11 PM

I'm so sorry GC. How lame. Stupid writers indeed.

Well, at least this is a good excuse to go throw back some serious martinis. Or wine. Or both. :)

I have to walk Marley at 9 and then have the day of until 5 when I have to make the long trek next door for Tito and Oliver. That's it. Tuesdays are usually my days off.

JWBear 01-28-2008 11:39 PM

That sucks, Brad! <hugs>

One of the many things I love about you is your ability to see beyond the suckiness of now and the knowledge that better things are always ahead. It usually works out too, doesn't it? And it will for you, of that I have no doubt. In the meanwhile, go to DL and have fun!

Snowflake 01-29-2008 07:57 AM

Well, one doors closed (or partially so it may sound) another will open. Does nto change the immediate suckage {hugs} to your Brad. Keep the chin up and go to Disneyland and pay a visit to Thurston!

RStar 01-29-2008 08:14 AM

GC, I'm so sorry to hear this. But I know you will bounce back. And like you said, something even better will come along.

Cadaverous Pallor 01-29-2008 08:31 AM

I'm so sorry, Brad! :( Best of luck in your next endeavor.

blueerica 01-29-2008 10:09 AM

I suck at getting to these threads while there's something new and interesting, or at least less redundant to say. (I'm sure most of us feel this way)

So, I will quote one of my favorite playwrights...

I do agree that it sucks that the writer's strike will soon end. It seems premature and really foolish of your company to do what it's doing.

And say hi to Thurston for me....

katiesue 01-29-2008 10:12 AM

OH GC - that just bites eggs. Hopefully it just means a better opportunity is coming your way.

madmonkeygirl 01-29-2008 10:42 AM

The Ax Man Cometh

GC go to Disneyland and have fun and visit Thurston. But don't make it a habit when you're unemployeed....once and awhile ya...gonna make CM stay home this weekend and WORK around the house...he seems to have alot of fun lately which is good...but come April is MY TURN...

Strangler Lewis 01-29-2008 10:58 AM

Buck up.

Tom 01-29-2008 11:00 AM

I'm so sorry, GC. If there is anything we can do to help out, you know you need only call.

Cool: Thurston is hanging out at Disneyland now. New reason to go!

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 01-29-2008 12:17 PM

Ah, kiddo. This f*!king sucks. Let me know if a box full of QAF vids will help to cheer you up this weekend.

€uroMeinke 01-29-2008 08:53 PM

I ran into GC with Coaster Matt & Borneo - they had one of their million dreams fulfilled and get to stay and extra hour after park closing (I think to actually ride ride and not just shop). Here's to an open for better days.

Gemini Cricket 01-30-2008 12:13 AM

I have made a decision to not let this get me down.
I have been in this position before and lived.
I'm going to survive.
I have a supportive family, great friends and the will to press on.

I'm not licked.

:)

Thanks for all the support, y'all. I feel like the luckiest guy on the planet to have such good friends as you.

Oh, and Strangler Lewis: isn't that a great song? Love it.

-------

No one is ever gonna bring me down!

mollywog 01-30-2008 11:40 PM

:( Here's hoping that you find a new job that you'll totally love and will pay you what you're worth!!

Thanks.

I submitted my resumes to a few places today. Here's to hopin'.

cirquelover 01-31-2008 12:37 AM

Good luck GC. I'm sure an even better opotunity will present itself soon, hang in there!

Gemini Cricket 09-08-2008 09:06 PM

Mwahahahaha!

So, seeing that I wasn't rehired at this stupid place, I just came to grips (months ago) with the fact that they had fired me and used the Writer's Strike as an excuse.

So, today I ran into someone I used to work with. She says that everyone misses me and that they have hired 3 people in a row to take my position and none of them have worked out. All three said it was too stressful and that they thought they were being overworked.

Now, 7 months later, the position remains empty and all of my former clients are not so happy.

This may be sour grapes, but it sure feels good that they shot themselves in the foot by laying me off. And by not hiring me back, they pretty much f*cked themselves.

I usually don't gloat like this but... Gloat! Gloat! Gloat!
:D

BarTopDancer 09-08-2008 09:29 PM

That is a good feeling. My position at my old job was eliminated because they automated what I did. Except the automation process needed human intervention to prevent it from failing. As of a few months ago, it's completely automated, and it's still failing.

cirquelover 09-08-2008 09:32 PM

That's what they get for not seeing the great person in front of them, that was already filling the bill. At least you don't have the stress and tribulation anymore!

lashbear 09-08-2008 10:29 PM

Go to Drinks and Ride Thurston while drinking lots of Disneylands !!!

...er, was that right?

Betty 09-09-2008 06:09 AM

I believe the respone you're looking for is:

Neener Neener Neener! ;)

3894 09-09-2008 08:10 AM

I'm sorry you lost your job.

If you feel like reading a good book, The Door in the Wall by Marguerite deAngeli is one of those children's books that has a great point of view for moments like this.

Snowflake 09-09-2008 08:32 AM

Yay for Gloating Crickets!

Bastard (the person who axed you) deserves all the headache and trouble. Oh, and of course you co-workers miss you, feel bad for them, but yay for you!

mousepod 09-09-2008 09:06 AM

Their loss is our gain. Sorry you were axed - really happy you found something to pass the time.
