Power out in most of Florida.

CNN is reporting massive power outages in southern Florida from Orlando to Miami.

Does anyone know if WDW is included?

Humm the WDW webcam is down...

LSPoorEeyorick 02-26-2008 12:19 PM

I dunno, but my family is there right now (and I'm flying out to meet them tomorrow.) So I hope not!

BarTopDancer 02-26-2008 12:22 PM

Humm.

That doesn't appear to be live though, so it might not be a good indicator of the power state:

Is this a LIVE web cam? Of course not.
from here

although if they simulated the power outage, that would be impressive.

figment1986 02-26-2008 01:13 PM

hmm.... WDW does have like 3 power providers... so if one went down they can draw from another... as far as i know most if not all of TECO power territories were still operational... and disney does get some power from TECO.

Alex 02-26-2008 01:18 PM

Maybe they should consider finally getting around to building their own nuclear power plant.

innerSpaceman 02-26-2008 01:37 PM

As promised in Walt's original plans for Epcot.

€uroMeinke 02-26-2008 01:52 PM

You know, the industry is expecting a resurgance of Nuclear it being more carbon freindly and all...

I get my power from a nuke plant... the only problem with nuke plants is the waste... and no one really wants the waste in their state.

Alex 02-26-2008 02:42 PM

True, but generally, waste is the only problem with the other forms of power plants as well.

What is interesting to me is that many will support hydroelectric and coal plants over nuclear when the first two do their environmental damage by design while the latter does it only when things go horribly wrong.

I'd much prefer to live next door to a nuclear plant than a coal powered plant.

Of course, it looks like the nuclear plant is the source of the today's problems.

figment1986 02-26-2008 02:50 PM

what nuke plant caused the problems today?

Kevy Baby 02-26-2008 02:57 PM

Bob's Nuclear Power Plant and Bait Shop in Tallahassee

Turkey Point near Miami.

But now I'm seeing conflicting information on whether it was the trigger or just a casualty of whatever really started it all.

I herd a substation went offline for some reason and that triggered the power plant shut down... which then causes a stress on the power grid which then caused the random black outs for different companies to compensate for the lack of power... at least the entire grid didn't go down like what happened in new england a few years ago... maybe it was a friend of at critter from new york who did it?

Alex 02-26-2008 07:06 PM

Yeah, that seems to be the confirmed story now, that a fire at a substation near Turkey Point triggered the nuclear plants to shut down and it went downhill from there. But when the story first broke (that I heard) it was that a fire at the Turkey Point plants shut them down.

Moonliner 02-26-2008 07:28 PM

Yeah that's what I heard too. It just took some time to get the cover-up team in place to erase all the real evidence, make it look like an accidental fire and then get the story out to the media.

CoasterMatt 02-26-2008 08:10 PM

It was a giant radioactive mutant turkey on fire near the nucular plant- I seen it on the Youtubes!!

Not Afraid 02-26-2008 08:26 PM

I just want to live in Turkey Point.

Well, maybe not.

CoasterMatt 02-26-2008 08:31 PM

Long Beach is now "Turkey Point" - like Dana Point, but with more tryptophan!
:)

dlrp_bopazot 02-28-2008 05:13 AM

hey we were not out of power by where i live but i heard that Disney University and some Resorts was out of power for a couple of seconds just time to the Generators to turn on .

Isn't that the story they put out just before Three Mile Island leaked radioactive water?

Moonliner 06-10-2008 11:11 AM

Interesting. I've now run across multiple sources that pin this power outage on Chinese Hackers.

Of course the official line is still "No hackers here".

However just to be safe...

Gn2Dlnd 06-10-2008 11:39 AM

Now, why would heavy smokers in China want to disrupt Florida's electricity?

Motorboat Cruiser 06-10-2008 08:00 PM

Not only did I wonder why there was nothing on the main page of CNN about this, but I also asked Heidi what time she was leaving tomorrow for Florida.

Moral of the story: Date stamps are your friend.

RStar 06-10-2008 11:28 PM

I was thinking "Oh no, not again!"

Then I looked at the original date.
