Stick Shifts and Safety Belts...here I come.

Well, I probably won't be driving a stick shift anytime soon, but I did get my learners permit today. SoCal drivers, I intend you no harm, but BEWARE! all the same.

It's about time this native Angelino gets behind the wheel of a car again. First a license, then...I'll worry about getting my own damn car.

In honor of the one question I answered incorrectly (re: a driver being cited if a passenger 15 or younger isn't wearing a seatbelt; i thought both passenger and driver were cited regardless of age), I give you CAKE lyrics:

Stick shifts and safety belts
Bucket seats have all got to go
When I'm driving in my car
It makes my baby seem so far

I need you here with me
Not way over in a bucket seat
I need you to be here with me
not way over in a bucket seat

But when we driving in my Malibu
It's easy to get right next to you
I say "Baby, scoot over please"
And then she's right there next to me

I need you here with me
Not way over in a bucket seat
I need you to be here with me
Not way over in a bucket seat

Well alot of good cars are Japanese
But when we're driving far
I need my baby, I need my baby next to me

Ah..well

Stick shifts and safety belts
Bucket seats have all got to go
When I'm driving in my car
It makes my baby seem so far

I need you here with me
Not way over in a bucket seat
I need you to be here with me
Not way over in a bucket seat

I just read an article about a dude who killed himself in a car accident. He was on meth, maybe other stuff, and got into a head on collision. He might have lived, except that instead of wearing a seatbelt, he was wearing a strap made to LOOK like he was wearing a seat belt, presumably to help avoid his 33rd citation for not wearing a seatbelt.

He showed them!

Apropos of nothing except the song lyrics, I suppose.

Err, congrats EH!

Not Afraid 02-27-2008 07:38 PM

wanna come over and learn how to drive an enormous Volvo?

Congrats!

Gemini Cricket 02-27-2008 07:55 PM

Congrats, EH!
Now, if only you knew someone with a lot of cars to test drive.
:D
I say take the Thunder out when Erik's not looking and do donuts in the canyon near his house.

Yes. He. Would.

I've been more careful with the accessibility to keys after an incident last June.

And Thunder? Pfft. It's about the speed of light Brand, not the speed of sound.

Gemini Cricket 02-27-2008 09:31 PM

All I know is that it's red and it's fast.
;)

NirvanaMan 02-27-2008 09:47 PM

That guy hated seatbelts!

Last month we had a guy up here kill himself in a wreck with a tree. No, he wasn't wearing a seatbelt but the 12 pack in the passenger seat was, praise Allah.

Moonliner 02-28-2008 10:20 AM

Idiots are always going to find a way to get themselves killed. Seat belt laws are just another example of Nanny government that we can live without.

In fact this could get interesting. The rational I've always heard for these laws is that medical bills for injuries related to morons not wearing safety belts drives up the cost of insurance for everyone. However if Obama or Clinton have their way EVERYONE will have insurance effectively killing this argument.

Morrigoon 02-28-2008 11:38 AM

You know, if the government provides health care, then everyone will treat other people's health as even MORE their business, and we're going to have more of a nanny government, not less.

There are plenty of statistics that show that thousands more people die when there are no seatbelt laws. It's a freaking switch - when the law is on, less people die, when the law is off, more people die. It sucks, but it's true. (In this instance, I have switched sides and can't help but support safety instead of freedom. Why? My parents hate seatbelts and only put them on to avoid tickets.)

All kidding aside, that Land Rover was my favorite car ever. It was like driving a moving apartment.

libraryvixen 02-29-2008 01:11 AM

Yay E !!
Sorry I didn't congratulate you sooner! I'm excited to ride in a vehicle with you!! If you need a licensed driver to sit with ya... ;)
