Make Mine Chocolate

Our bunny was rescued (by certain awesome swankers) soon after Easter. Bunnies do not make good spontaneous gifts to young children! Many end up "in the wild", i.e., dodging cars and stray dogs, eating whatever they can find.

You can help raise money for Make Mine Chocolate today (and today only) by using GoodSearch for any searching you need to do today. Type in In the "Who do you GoodSearch for?" box, type in "Columbus House Rabbit Society" and a small amount will be donated to save bunnies every time you do a search.

It's a Yahoo engine so it should be a quality search.

If you want to buy chocolate buns that benefit MMC, you can shop here.

Munchkin appreciates it!

Thanks for the link, CP!

Another Easter issue, and I'm not sure it's been brought up here, are the ducks and chicks that get bought around this time of year as well. Many families don't know what they're getting into, and these animals are often left for dead out in the urban wild. Worse, are the chicks who are dyed various Easter colors. The whole issue saddens me.

scaeagles 03-12-2008 07:58 AM

What if you like hasenpfeffer a few months after Easter?

BDBopper 03-12-2008 08:22 AM

Oh yes. Please keep the bunnies to chocolate...or plushies (like the new Cadbury clucking plushie!). I remember hearing about all those stray bunnies in Garden Grove, CA last year...it was so sad.

Alex 03-12-2008 09:09 AM

On the other hand, unlike dogs given as pets after each re-release of 101 Dalmatians, six months after Easter, when you realize you don't want a rabbit/chicken/duck after all, you do at least have dinner.

I wonder if there'd be a huge uproar if a food bank said "hey, don't abandon them, bring them to us!"

But if anybody is going to be giving me an Easter rabbit (though strangely nobody ever seems to include me in their religious holiday planning) I'd like mine to be peanut butter please.

As good of a time as any to drag this back out:

I just thought of the name for the LoT biography: Make Mine Bacon.

People actually dye chicks?! Umm, why? Wouldn't that be harmful to the poor chick?

I never understood people buying animals for holidays, unless you wanted one for your birthday or something.

One of my bunnies was a Easter reject the other one was supposed to be snake food:( They passed away a long time ago and I haven't had another since.

blueerica 03-12-2008 10:07 AM

Link on colored chicks.

From what I understand the dye is relatively harmless, but I personally feel that it takes away from the fact that it is an actual animal that needs care and attention, rather than a toy to be bored with and throw away after the feathers grow out, which contrary to the article I linked, takes longer than just a 'couple' of weeks to fully grow out.

ETA: I do feel differently about coloring chicks for scientific purposes, which has been done, and is more understandable to me.

Dyed Dogs

Capt Jack 03-12-2008 10:42 AM

wow. for their sake, I really hope those dogs are colorblind

blueerica 03-12-2008 12:47 PM

While poodles are arguably some of the smartest dogs I've come across, I've always found groomed poodles to be one of the most ridiculous-looking breeds ever... so the bright colors fit, in a way. And yeah, for the sake of the dogs, I hope they're colorblind, as well.

Alex 03-12-2008 12:58 PM

Encyclopedia Brown taught me they were, but that asshole lied. Turns out they aren't (or aren't completely, particularly at the violet end of the spectrum).

With all the cases I've handled I've yet to represent a painted poodle. In all my trips to San Quentin, I've yet to see a painted poodle.

Humans with tattoos? That's a different story.

So what you are saying is that tattoos cause crime? ;)

cirquelover 03-12-2008 02:14 PM

For the love of Pete! Why would you do that to an animal? I just don't understand people, at all. I'm actually getting very disgusted with society this week. Ok, I have been for a while but I just don't get it, do humans no longer come with brains?!

No. More of a profiling thing.

lashbear 03-12-2008 02:41 PM

I'm imagining scaeagles trying to slit a bunny's fuzzy throat.... then bursting into tears and letting it go. ;)

You read all of those too? He taught me that squirrels don't ever move backwards down a tree, and that if there's something loose in a truckbed and the truck stops suddenly, inertia carries it forward, not back over the tailgate.

Alex 03-12-2008 06:50 PM

I read them, but the one with dogs being colorblind is the only one I actually remember (and I don't remember anything about that one, just that colorblind dogs was a fact in it) because I learned shortly afterward that this isn't entirely true and I felt very betrayed at the time).

Mousey Girl 03-12-2008 09:49 PM

With Easter coming, the one thing I miss is Chicken. She was a good Chicken. I'm just sorry she had to go the way she did... I honestly think that PoohDog misses her the most. When the hawk came back and finished her off, he was mopey for a month. He kept looking at me, as iff to say, "My pet Chicken is gone."

Not Afraid 03-12-2008 10:16 PM

Wait! I missed that the hawk finished her off! I thought she had moved to a safer location? (The Chicken Witness Protection Program???) ;)

Disneyphile 03-12-2008 10:26 PM

Poor Chicken! :(

alphabassettgrrl 03-12-2008 10:44 PM

Awww, I thought Chicken was sent to safety, too. Poor thing.

My friend used to have a rooster she'd dye. He was clearly a pet, though, and would have never been left to fend for himself. The dye wore off after a while.

Mousey Girl 03-13-2008 05:46 AM

No, she was still healing. She never had a chance. At least the 2nd attack, from how I found her, she didn't suffer.

I will definitely buy chocolate from them. Your bunny is SOOOOO adorable!

alphabassettgrrl 03-15-2008 06:30 PM

Poor Chicken.

MouseWife 03-17-2008 06:59 AM

*shhh* We went to the All Vegan store for 'chocolate' bunnies for our Vegans. Ooo, lots of yummies for their baskets!!! They will be so surprised!!! Usually we don't have anything for their baskets but this year I went DUH and went to the store.

No bunnies for effect here.

Sorry to hear about Chicken. :(

Mousey Girl 03-17-2008 03:55 PM

Nickolas called me Satruday night...they went shopping. More freakin' chickens!! He had a minor cow when I told him he could NOT bring it home. I had to tell an almost lie... I told him I saw the hawk the other day. I didn't actually see it, but PoohDog did.
