BDBopper - Atlanta - Please check in with us!
Here's hoping you're OK. Please check in and let us know that you're all right!
|
Isn't Brian outside of atlanta? I know a colleague of mine checked in from GA Tech and said everything was alright over there... but he was a few blocks from the CNN Center...
Not sure on Brian, hopefully he checks in tomorrow morning if he doesn't know about the mess out there. |
BDBopper checking in.
I am located in Lawrenceville, GA (in Gwinnett County). This is Northeast of Atlanta by about 30-40 miles. Thankfully the storm that produced the tornado did not get close to here. All we got was lightning and rain out of the system last night. We've had more storms this morning and more on the way this afternoon. It's been pretty wild down here. Thank God that no one was killed in the area where the tornado hit. Thanks for thinking and worrying about me. :) |
For those of you who are unaware here's what went down.
A spring storm popped up out of nowhere last night and headed straight for Downtown Atlanta. At about 9:30 a Tornado warning was issued for the Downtown area which was busy with several events going on around the Georgia Dome. A basketball game was taking place inside the facility (that I was watching) and suddenly around 9:45 PM you could hear a loud roar and girders and other structures in the ceiling started to swing and debris fell onto the court. They ended up reuming that game and canceling the game that was to follow. Damage is evident at the Georgia Dome, the adjacent World Congress Center (a convention facility), The CNN Center, and The Omni Hotel. There is extensive water damage and shards of glass all over the place. billboards were tossed like toys onto cars that are totaled. But thank God no one was killed. The sun is now coming up and now officials can now take stock of the extent of damage. On the radio they are describing the scene as a "War zone" |
I saw it on the news last night. Wow!
I'm glad you are ok. It's a mess that's going to have to be cleaned up, but it could have been worse. It always seems like tornadoes prefer flat outlying areas, but some have hit downtowns, like in Texas. |
Have been thinking about you....thanks for checking in.
|
It says something about our culture/world climate that areas that tornados have hit are described as "war zones," but in actual war zones nobody is going around saying, "Man, it looks like a tornado hit this place!"
|
Thanks for checking in, and We're glad you're ok! :)
|
i hope you are still ok... current radar echoes are not looking so good for northeast of Altanta. please take care.

We are now getting a break. We had one short storm that blew through here in about 5 minutes with lots of rain and hail. We had a Tornado warning at the time but nothing that bad here. Same cannot be said for other locales. Downtown Atlanta took another (albeit brief) touchdown. There were fatalities reported in Polk and Floyd Counties near Rome (about 60 miles NW of Atlanta) with heavy damage reported. We are still under a Tornado Watch until 1 AM. We are now under brilliant and bright sunshine. That's bad because even a little bit of this will increase instability and probably aide in more storm development.
|
Yeah, been thinking about you, and a handful of other friends I have from that area. Glad to hear you're okay and weathering the storm.

Thank goodness you're safe BDB! :snap: |
The breeze you feel right now is my sigh of relief. the front that will bring the end of the severe weather threat is about to go past me here and it is dry as the line of Thunderstorms with it fell apart and died. After whjat became a restless night I can sleep easy and I look forward to it!
|
Yay for a restful safe night! :)
**hugs** Glad you're safe. |
glad you are ok!!
it's looking very dreary outside here... it is windy with very black thunderclouds right over the house. i do hope it rains and thankfully, don't expect any heavy wind event. but a good clap of thunder could send me under the covers! bet the Park is thinning out tonight. |
Just got back from the park. Yes, it was thinning out quite a bit. It's quite cool out, and with the wind chill I swear it feels like 35 outside! And with the strong winds and ominous clouds it looked like we might get a tornado. I even said it looks like the one from Atlanta might pay us a visit! And a passer by said "Is this Southern Caliifornia? It never does this here!"
|
We had a few rumbles of thunder earlier, and it's been raining off and on; but nothing on the magnitude of what's going on in Atlanta.
|
It has been windy and cold here all day...not that I have been awake all day.
|
It just started raining here.
