A Swanky St. Pat's!

Here's wishing everyone a lucky and swanky St. Patrick's Day! Enjoy yourselves but don't get too drunk, okay? As for me I think I am going to have some Bailey's and watch The Quiet Man. I'd watch Darby O' Gill & the Little People too if I had a copy.

Cheers!

EDIT - WOW!! Someone put Darby O' Gill on Youtube! Just do a search. Shhhh.

wolfy999 03-17-2008 10:06 AM

May everyone have the luck of the Irish today!

blueerica 03-17-2008 10:19 AM

I'll be eating corned beef and cabbage tonight! Woohoo!

Motorboat Cruiser 03-17-2008 10:23 AM

I'll be doing a five hour gig at McKenna's in Long Beach. :) Come watch Eric turn green (hint: not feeling very well today.) Still, it should be fun.

Be safe everyone.

BarTopDancer 03-17-2008 10:40 AM

In support of our Dublin office I'm at work.

Oh wait. We should be closed to show our global support.

In support of our Dublin office, I'll be drinking Guinness later.

wendybeth 03-17-2008 10:58 AM

We had corned beef and cabbage last night- Tori had mac-n-cheese, of course. The only Irish movies we have are Angela's Ashes or My Left Foot, which are both a teensy bit depressing. I suppose I could pinch Tori- I'm sure she's forgotten to put on some green.

Morrigoon 03-17-2008 10:58 AM

MBC: can you post more details?

Happy wearin' o'the green, everyone! (says the girl who forgot and wore red instead)

Kevy Baby 03-17-2008 11:12 AM

Should I care?

Not Afraid 03-17-2008 11:16 AM

I'm not wearing any green. But, I'm dressed like an Irish thug - boy fit jeans, a men's crew neck T, Grey Chuck Taylors and a baseball hat.

Morrigoon 03-17-2008 11:19 AM

NA: ooh, you chav, you!

Irish thug, lesbian. You certainly are a chameleon.

blueerica 03-17-2008 11:49 AM

I'm not wearing green yet, but I'll be wearing the prettiest emerald green after I take a shower. I'm now wondering whether J is wearing green. If not, he'll have to be pinched.

Capt Jack 03-17-2008 11:57 AM

half tempted to go out and try to find some St Pats festivities, but geez....its a monday

decisions decisions

Prudence 03-17-2008 11:59 AM

I'm drinking Jones green apple soda out of a green can. The soda is also an alarmingly green color. I would be happy to replay the green color as evidence for the next person to pinch me.

BarTopDancer 03-17-2008 11:59 AM

The decision is to go out.

There was a short story on NPR last Friday about an Irish immigrant that opened an Irish bakery in San Francisco a couple years ago. He said that until he came to America he'd never had corned beef and cabbage before and it came as a surprise to him that people apparently considered it a staple of his diet.

That the American idea of Irish culture seems to have been frozen into our national psyche about 100 years ago.

The pressure is such to provide "authentic" foods that this year he added corned beef and cabbage to the menu for the month and it has been hugely popular.

Not that this is any reason to not eat corned beef, I just found it amusing. An object lesson in how you get what most people think of as "Chinese food" or the Taco Bell line-up or people not believing Lani when she says that sushi isn't really eaten at home in Japan.

Gemini Cricket 03-17-2008 12:05 PM

To celebrate St. Patrick's Day, I will be watching The Quiet Man and Once, listening to U2, puking up green beer into a toilet while Collin Farrell holds my hair back and not allow myself to march in any parades celebrating today's holiday.

:D

Capt Jack 03-17-2008 12:06 PM

ah, but where....this is the rub

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 03-17-2008 12:18 PM

I'm fully insured so I guess I can drive today...

Morrigoon 03-17-2008 12:20 PM

I forgot to pick up the corned beef from the supermarket. Dang, shoulda had that cookin' up in the crock pot today! Must remember to pop by and grab a couple (one to eat this week, one to freeze for later while it's cheap!)

CoasterMatt 03-17-2008 12:59 PM

Fvck St. Patricks Day!

Sure, I have a bit of a sore throat and... oh, you mean where we are playing? ;)

We are playing here. The address is 190 N Marina Dr, Long Beach, CA 90803. We play from 5-10pm, perhaps longer. No cover charge that I'm aware of, but it should be pretty busy.

:)

I be kidding with you of course! ;)

wendybeth 03-17-2008 01:13 PM

I knew CB&C wasn't a traditional Irish meal, but that got me to wondering what would be. Given the era that St. Patrick lived in, more than likely it was boiled mutton. I think corned beef is a (slight) improvement on that- I've never had mutton, but if it's anything close to lamb then it's nasty ****.

CoasterMatt 03-17-2008 01:21 PM

I only say Fvck St. Patrick's Day because I've experienced great personal loss on a day marred by binge drinking.

That, and the asshats that keep coming up and asking for a discount today because they're Irish

Ditto that, on knowing... An old co-worker from Ireland told me. But, it's basically the one time of the year where it's somehow acceptable that I go beyond rational cabbage eating limits and everyone else joins in, thus making the resulting gas 'OK'.

And seriously, if we're eating traditionally Irish, wouldn't we just be eating a lot of potatoes... or ??

Ooh, I'll put my bacon-y note elsewhere. Like here.

alphabassettgrrl 03-17-2008 02:39 PM

I know most "ethnic" food isn't really. I don't care an awful lot, sometimes, cuz whatever it is, it's tasty. I like sushi. I like CB&C. I like burritos.

It's a fun game to play. Maybe we'll go up to the bar and have a drink tonight. Did some drinkin' on Saturday and kind of overdid it. :) But a Guinness tonight might be in order. It won't be green, though.

Morrigoon 03-17-2008 02:41 PM

BE: Except that, of course, the potato is originally from America :)

Strangler Lewis 03-17-2008 02:58 PM

My Irish aunt would never serve sweet potatoes on Thanksgiving because where she grew up, sweet potatoes were fed to the pigs.

RStar 03-17-2008 03:35 PM

I hate corned beef and cabbage. Tonight I'll put green food coloring in my Corona, top it with a slice of lime and call it a day. ;)

Sounds like that's just as Irish as Corned Beef and Cabbage anyway....

Capt Jack 03-17-2008 03:54 PM

CB&C sounds great to me. my lil japanese mom made the best Ive ever had before or since.

<sigh>

swanie 03-17-2008 03:58 PM

I have our corned beef simmering in the crock pot with a little onion, some carrots, and a few parsnips. In another 30 mins I need to add the cabbage. It smells so good right now, but that's the sucky thing about using the crock pot. Those last couple of hours seem to last an eternity. I really don't want to wait another 2.5 hours for dinner. :(

swanie

innerSpaceman 03-17-2008 04:11 PM

OMG, I forgot to wear green today. First time I've missed in, likely, 38 years. Not exaggerating.

Oi. Well, I wore lots of green yesterday and ate corned beef ( I wouldn't eat cabbage on a bet), so let's just blame it on the recent time change and call it a day.

Monday is a lame day to go out drinking, so nix to that.

Until you add that cabbage........

;)

alphabassettgrrl 03-17-2008 04:46 PM

I like cabbage, so long as it's cooked.

Morrigoon 03-17-2008 04:49 PM

I like the cabbage too, in moderation. Helps the body digest the rest of it ;)

I'm sure I said it before, but when my lil' Japanese grandma used to make it regularly (she pretty much never makes it any more :( ) she made the best spaghetti bolognese that's ever passed my lips.

Something we can agree on: Corned Beef Good, Cabbage Bad.

Alex 03-17-2008 05:19 PM

In honor of today a local artisanal bakery was serving pizza with potato and cabbage.

It was very good.

Lamb is yummy!!!

I've had mutton... A little tough and gamy, but good. (It must be the Welsh in me.)

wolfy999 03-17-2008 06:13 PM

I love lamb also...rest of the Wolfpack doesn't have the taste for it though. Mutton is what I was brought up on..until we finally could afford lamb. Scottish here.

BDBopper 03-17-2008 06:30 PM

Lamb is awesome. Had it for the first time at a friend's house when I was invited over for their Christmas dinner. Yummy...with mint jelly. Awesome! :)

Mousey Girl 03-17-2008 06:41 PM

I just realized that I haven't eaten today...
Does a can of corned beef hash qualify as Irish?

I actually thought about going out tonight...for all of 2 seconds.

Not Afraid 03-17-2008 06:52 PM

Nothing like celebrating St Pat's with taquitos and guac.

CoasterMatt 03-17-2008 07:03 PM

I ate a green cupcake at lunch

Agreed about Angela's Ashes, and I haven't seen My Left Foot in years, but I'm thinking a little Daniel Day Lewis is always a good idea.

I remembered to wear green, but I won't be leaving the house tonight. People are crazy enough on the road when they aren't fueled by green beer.

Mousey Girl 03-17-2008 07:24 PM

I went with tuna instead of hash. I put extra relish in it to give it some extra green.

CoasterMatt 03-17-2008 07:34 PM

The green cupcakes came out even greener

alphabassettgrrl 03-17-2008 07:35 PM

Had corned beef sandwich for lunch, and cabbage with dinner. Dinner was chicken stuffed with spinach, cheese, and sour cream and wrapped with bacon. Bacon's Irish, right? :) No I didn't color it green. :)

Prudence 03-17-2008 07:40 PM

What? No love for the cabbage? Caraway seed is supposed to help with the odor before and, er, aft.

€uroMeinke 03-17-2008 07:44 PM

Not a big fan of CB&C, but I imagine that's why you'll find a lot more Irish bars than restaurants - Now if only I had some Jameson's...

wendybeth 03-18-2008 09:52 AM

Lamb has the most horrid aftertaste ever, and if it were the only meat on the planet I'd be a vegetarian. I've only tried it twice and both times I had to brush my teeth right away.

Capt Jack 03-18-2008 10:16 AM

lamb can be tricky. Ive always been told it has to be served and consumed warm. as soon as it starts to cool is when that sort of odd lamb flavor some folks hate comes out.

dang...lamb isnt till friday at my lil greek spot down the street. guess I'll have to wait.

Motorboat Cruiser 03-18-2008 11:52 AM

What a crazy night at the pub. They told us that it might not be too busy, due to many people choosing to celebrate over the weekend. That assumption was incorrect. Sardines.

And all they wanted to hear was Irish music. Granted, we came pretty prepared but we figured they might also want to dance. Nope, just lots and lots of Irish music. Five and a half hours worth of it. By the end of the night, our singer's fake Irish accent had morphed into something that sounded like an Irish pirate but nobody seemed to notice - other than the drummer and I, who kept yelling "Argghhh" each time he sang. :)

And as is becoming the tradition around here (since I'm never home on St. Paddy's Day,) Matthew and I are having our corned beef and cabbage tonight. The nice thing is that you can purchase all the ingredients on the day after for mere pennies.

wendybeth 03-18-2008 01:06 PM

One thing I am VERY happy about is that I no longer give up certain holidays every year. This year will be the first year in about 7 or 8 that I haven't worked on the Fourth of July and last December was the first time that I have not worked ANY Saturday in December in about 20 years.
