Name change-freaking out
Ok- I trust DP, I trust FP. I think I trust Orange County-
But when I signed my marriage license/certificate- I signed with my last name (maiden name) because I was told to. I did not sign with my new last name. Now I am freaking out that I did it wrong- that I should have signed it wth my new name. I am worried that now I will have trouble getting my new SSN card and license. So I am freaking out now- Reassurance anyone? Advice? Seriously concerned :( |
Signing with your maiden name was the correct thing to do.
|
Wish I knew more about it, but am glad that I'll know what's up after this.
Sorry I can't help you more... :( |

Then the SSN office wants proof of old and new name- which means I have to do the license first. I am trying to get some confirmation from the CO DMV and hitting hold times and idiots. |
When I got married and moved at the same time, the DMV just wanted a certified copy of my marriage license, which had my maiden name on it. I don't remember what SS wanted.
|
I just used my marriage license at SS, then the SS change for DMV. And since the SS lady wasn't all that quick - I did mine before we got married, they didn't notice that the copy wasn't certified yet.

As I remember, I signed with my maiden name. I'll have to see if I can find it. Do the DMV change first, as that is easy. Then you have a document with your new name and everything else should be easier.
I don't think there's much hurry; I wasn't very quick to do mine. I think we actually filed our taxes before I took care of any name change issues. |

I just didn't change my name.
|
It's really not a big deal. Relax. ;)
You signed correctly. The marriage license shows both names - your maiden one, and your new one (it comes after his). ;) |
*ok*
|
You gots da post-wedding jitters. :p
:D It's so neat, isn't it?? Mrs... wife... spouse... *happy sigh* |
It is...yes. :)

I was horribly torn over whether I was going to change my name or not. On the one hand, life will be smoother if our names match. On the other hand, it's *my* name and why shouldn't I keep it?
It's been 12 years now and I'm still secondguessing the decision. |
Well- the license change was handled successfully- now the SSN and the two major things are done.
Already changed credit cards, insurance and chiropractor records :)....but there is yet more to do. Gah! |
Changing your name is very time consuming! The SSN and the driver's license are the ones that matter because they help to verify your new name for everything else that you need to change. (Gah! That is a mighty long sentence!) I had to change my name once when I just got married... and then 5 years later when we got divorced!

Granted, that was 11 years ago, so things probably have changed. |

This may be an argument in favor of staying married for silly reasons :D |
Chris often gets called by my last name by people who know me professionally. I sometimes forget to introduce him by both his first and last names.
However, I LOVE getting calls for Mrs. Meinke. "I'm sorry, but she doesn't live here." |
I don't mind being called Mrs. Moore, even though it's not my name. I like being reminded now and then that technically that could be my name if I chose it.
|
For me, its just a good way to tell if the person calling actually knows us or not. I've been LC for all of the 24 years we've been coupled. Its usually a unwelcome caller who calls me Mrs. Meinke.
|
I just have relatives who can't get it through their head (or don't want to) that I kept my name. (They don't do it in the midwest a lot, and a lot of them didn't understand why in heaven's name I kept Powers.)
But I can see how it'd be stellar for pre-emptively dumping telemarketers! |
My mother would never intentionally violate a rule of etiquette, so all mail from her to both of us has each name on a separate line. The rest of my family, both sides, addresses mail to Him and Me Elkins.
I guess I should be happy they don't do Mr. and Mrs. Him Elkins. |
At first, when I was with Ralphie, I thought it would be kinda cool to take his last name if we got married. And then I changed my mind. I like my last name. So if I ever get married, I'll keep my name. Although I do like the sound of Brad Gyllenhaal.

GC~ :D
Geesh, I wish I could remember how I did it. As far as the family goes, there are still members who don't know my last name. I still receive xmas cards to the 'Romeros'................. So true about the calls, Lisa. You just know it is a sales call if they don't address you properly. I have to keep from laughing. Oh, and Nephy, Congratulations!! I haven't been around much and I can tell by this thread and your avatar that you've gotten married!! |
I want to change mine back. Maddy thinks then we won't "be a family" anymore. But she calls my Maiden name my "real" name and my current last name my "fake" name.
Besides - McQueen is a way cooler name than what I've got now anyway. |
I kept my maiden name for years, then finally did the hyphenated version of both of our names. Takes forever to write my signature. I just filed the marriage cert with SS, then took my new ss card to the DMV and got a new license.
|
I can weed out junk mail because some lists have me listed as "Mr. Kerry R".
|
Years ago, I once got a call from someone who asked for "the lady of the house". I replied, "speaking". He hung up. :D
|
Taking his last name was a no-brainer for me. I love my parents but a 9-4-11 letter name is a doozy. I always wanted a shorter name- now I have it- it's cute too.
Went to the SS office yesterday- could have mailed it in but I did not want to send original documents away for that long. So the big changes are done- now on to the rest. |
My maiden name is lengthy, but I love it. My married name was Nelson. *shrug* I was in the middle of the alphabet and everyone knew how to say it. What fun is that?
Would I hyphenate it if I were to wed again? Most likely not... but the thought of taking up 2 lines of my huge name on my driver's license is very tempting! ;) |
