Lucent Dossier at the Edison - Next show 5/14

Not sure if I can make this one, but I certainly must make one of the future appearances - this is probably the closest I'll come to Wiemar Cabaret in a long time:

Quote:

Wed April 16th @ the Edison!!!
On the night of Wednesday, April 16th (thats tomorrow night!)
You are cordially invited to join the stars of Lucent for an intimate night
of underground shenanigans at the Edison Downtown. If you haven't been to the Edison it is one of the most incredible underground locations in the world
Let your mind drift to the days of prohibition, when
speakeasies popped up in the most unexpected places and filled the night with the most incredible madness… Shhhhh!.

...And don't tell anyone, but this party is a very special sneak peak glimpse into what might just become our official weekly LA residency beginning very soon. So join us for our first of firsts at the Edison, knowing we ain't responsible for any of the trouble you might get yourself into, but let's just say the Absinthe will be pouring and Lucent will be jiving…
Dress in your speak-easy best! Pull out your little dresses, vests and fadoras! We are going to paint the town saucy!

The Edison 9pm - 1am
108 West 2nd Street
Los Angeles, CA 90012
Tickets Available at the door - $15 – cash only! Whisper the secret pass word "Tantra Circus" and get in for $10!!! It's a small club so get there early or reserve your table. Online ticket sales will become available before the official April 30th residency. Check back soon!

I read about this a couple of weeks ago, meant to send you the info, and promptly forgot the whole thing. I have plans to see Mortified this evening for a friend's birthday, so I too will miss out on this Wiemer experience. Not that I had anything to wear to it, anyway...

mousepod 04-16-2008 12:37 PM

Man... just when I decide I'm going to go to my first Dodgers game...

€uroMeinke 04-16-2008 08:54 PM

So while we miss the premier, we ought to see about catching a future performance

And a good game it was (it was the first one I was able to watch so far this season).

It was indeed a great solo night out (with 53,000+ others, of course).

A view from my seat (which I bought 20 minutes before game time).

An artistic self-portrait.

But to the original topic: I'm in when they start performing regularly.

Just a quote from their recent blog:

Quote:

The Edison and Lucent Dossier are re-introducing and reinventing the spirit of cabaret. Reminiscent of Paris and Berlin of the early 20's, Wednesday nights the venue is transformed into an exploration of the past — a peek into the decadent, sensuous underbelly of historic LA

innerSpaceman 04-30-2008 09:07 PM

Pick one. I'll go.

Ugh, school nite.

But as long as I remember Figueroa's a one-way street north of Olympic, I should be good.

No Singapore Sling's though. OMG.

Unless you wanna kiss me.

frodo potter 04-30-2008 09:45 PM

I am so up for this DP and I have been really wanting to go to the Edison anyway so added cabaret=added fun.

Just have to get off work early

Cadaverous Pallor 05-01-2008 07:25 AM

They were amazing at Coachella. Everyone should check this out.

Kevy Baby 05-01-2008 08:53 AM

As much as I try not to go out on a school night, this looks like something I want to check out. The pix and stories from Coachella certainly make them sound interesting

Here's their latest blog post - quoting the LAist.

Next show May 14

We Must Go!

Quote:

LAist article- "Last Night at the Edison"
LAist did an online write up on their experience with Lucent Dossier performing at the Edison (which happens bi-weekly, or every other Wednesday... our next one is on May 14th)... here's what they wrote (to go directly to their website for the article you can go to- http://laist.com/2008/05/01/photo_essay_las.php )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~
Photo Essay: Last Night at the Edison's Incandescence Wednesday
Last night we hit downtown L.A. for the Edison's weekly event, Incandescence, where vaudeville circus/dance troupe Lucent Dossier was performing from the stage, from the rafters, from the floor amid the audience. We sampled the absinthe cocktails which were served to us in vintage-looking glass bottles that we were allowed to take home. And even some of the liquor shots were handed to us in corked glass bottles that resembled those miracle elixirs con men used to shill back in the day. "Promise this will make us tipsy? Hey! It works!"
Absinthe cocktails served in glass bottles that you can take home! Get a load of the Applejack shot in the little corked bottle. (Caroline on Crack)
NEXT »
We marveled at the spectacle of the trapeze artist performing high above our heads, twining and untwining herself in reams of cloth without touching down on the floor. On stage was a dance performance of vaudevillian proportions which got our toes tapping. So much fun!
There was even this lady named Candy who walked around wearing organic strawberry cotton candy that she asked guests to taste. We reluctantly pulled a piece of her cotton candy wig and put it in our mouths. Hmm, er, umm...mmm, pretty good! Apparently she was going to walk around Edison until all her cotton candy was gone. Wish we got a pic of her at the end of the night.
The Edison crowd wasn't as Burning Man as we thought it was going to be. Rather it was a mixture of well-dressed sophisticates and circus people. Making people-watching another fun activity for the evening, which we were able to do from the comfort of our corner booth.
If you're worried that you missed the circus, don't fret. Lucent Dossier will continue to perform at the Edison every other Wednesday at 8pm.
Tickets: $10 before 8pm, $20 after 8pm, $15 with online pre-order at Edison's Web site.
Ok, the 14th!!! Me says yes!
frodo potter 05-04-2008 11:16 AM
I have been ordered not to go without DP so I will have to miss this one but probably in June DP any I will go
Disneyphile 05-04-2008 10:04 PM
Actually, we'll probably go sometime in July, so maybe some of you will want an encore trip by then. :)
I need time to finish my steampunk corset before we go. ;)
Not Afraid 05-04-2008 11:07 PM
They currently only have 2 shows scheduled at the Edison - May 14th and May 28th. They will be traveling to Lisbon and Dublin after that. Who knows if and when they will be back, but it's not on their calendar at the moment.
Either of the May dates can work for me with a little schedule massaging if I know in advance.
Ugh, last night/this morning has proven that weeknight trips into L.A. and back for entertainment are not something we need to be doing often, if at all.
Definitely will not be doing that again this month. Sorry we'll miss it, but at least we saw them 4 times in the desert.
Circus of Life (urbandaddy.com write up)
We found another online write up on Lucents night of performances every other Wed at the Edison (note- on the original write up it mentions every Wed... when in reality it is every other Wednesday... so make sure you know which Wednesday dates we are scheduled there if you want to check us out that night... we corrected this blog from any mis-information of timeslots)--- for the original online post go to - http://www.urbandaddy.com/la/1267/In...Daddy_Archives
Circus of Life
Wild New Night at the Edison
No matter how polished you are, life can sometimes spiral into a complete and utter circus...thankfully. (Too much polish can be pretty dull.)
Embrace the sheer carnival spectacle of Incandescent Wednesdays, kicking off a new residency this week at the Edison.
Through the alley, down the stairs and into the industrial heart of the cavernous nightspot, you'll now be greeted by the merry band of aerial-vaudeville-cabaret-ists known as Lucent Dossier (pictured above). The troupe takes over the stage (and the floor, and the rafters throughout) with a yesteryear-ish anything-goes act (from Prohibition-era barkers to timeless burlesque beauties) that you might avoid in any other alley...but it all seems overdue in a restored cave filled with turbines and generators that was once the city's first power plant. (All historic restorations should involve stunning women in the rafters and some gin in your hand.)
If you're ready to extend the illicit, out-of-control vibe to your next meal, there's the enticing new Carnival Platter, stuffed with throwbacks to an unchecked childhood of overindulgence—like The Elvis Sandwich (no explanation necessary) and Deep-Fried Twinkie Popsicles (ditto).
Because Wednesdays could use some overindulgence.
Incandescent Wednesdays, bi weekly, 9pm-midnight, The Edison, 108 W. 2nd St 101 (at Main), Downtown, 213-613-0000
€uroMeinke 05-12-2008 07:10 AM
Another bump to see if anyone is interested in going on Wednesday
blueerica 05-12-2008 07:31 AM
I am interested in Wednesday... the 28th.
innerSpaceman 05-12-2008 07:53 AM
This coming Wednesday has gotten tough (but not undoable) for me ... and, seeing that I'd like something especially fun for blueerica's visit ... I also vote for postponing to the 28th.
Kevy Baby 05-12-2008 09:23 AM
Can't we do both the 14th AND 28th?
BarTopDancer 05-12-2008 09:30 AM
I can't go to either, but I vote for the 28th so Erica can go!
innerSpaceman 05-12-2008 09:53 AM
I can't do both. Out carousing and drinking till 1 in the morning on a Wednesday is something my employers don't want me to do at all, so it's something I'd like to limit to once a month.
blueerica 05-12-2008 09:56 AM
And if you push it to the 28th, next month gets here more quickly!
;)
Absinthe and Aerialists at the Edison
We found yet another great write up on Lucent at the Edison... this one by Jeanina Denholm of blogdowntown.com ( for the original blog post check out- http://blogdowntown.com/2008/05/3305...-at-the-edison ) Here's what she has to say about her experience... but you should also come experience Lucent at the Edison for yourself!!!------
Absinthe and Aerialists at the Edison
Lucent Dossier at the Edison
Lucent Dossier show on the main stage at the Edison
Just when you think the Downtown bar scene might be getting a little predictable, in comes the Edison to shake up the middle of your week.
Enter Lucent Dossier, a type of vaudeville circus, a few absinthe cocktails and half naked aerialists and suddenly Wednesday is a whole lot more exciting.
I've always loved the Edison but stopped going when the lines became obnoxious and seating a bit hard to find. But when I got an invite to the Edison's Incandescence evening that described the night as a chance to experience "The Alchemy of Absinthe, Sensual Vaudeville and Aerial Sprites," how could I refuse?
First off, I've had absinthe before and wasn't really interested in seeing how difficult I could make my Thursday morning if I knocked back a few, so I stuck to a simple champagne cocktail. For those interested, my friends seemed to like the special absinthe cocktails that night, especially the mini cocktails that came in small vintage corked bottles.
The atmosphere is electric (no pun intended) and the show actually begins even before you walk in the door. All the doormen and hostesses are decked out in fun period costumes that range from beautiful 1920's flapper dresses to a shockingly bright yellow zoot suit.
Entertaining outfits weren't limited to the staff. There were all kinds of people dressed up in fabulous goth-like get ups mingling amongst the typical Edison customers.
Just when you get used to all the people watching -- the lights grow dim. A spotlight shines in the middle of the space and a tiny, half naked women starts to shimmy and twist her way up two long ceiling to floor fabric expanses. At one point she was hanging upside down from one fabric column by her ankle, nearly thirty feet off the ground. The bar crowd was remarkably quiet while taking in the sights.
The night's main headliner, Lucent Dossier, seems just right for the Absinthe pairing. With an aesthetic that reminded me of the Smashing Pumpkins mid-90s video for "Tonight, Tonight," the performance was full of sexed up, highly stylized fantasy performers. I loved it!
Incandescence is held every other Wednesday. To avoid the steep $20 cover you have to come before 8pm (or buy $15 advance tickets via the Edison's website. There's a small menu if you get hungry, but table reservations are suggested.
blueerica 05-27-2008 10:50 PM
Wait, who's going to what now?
In good news... still want to go.
In bad news... my gradumation ceremonies go on for at least two freaking hours and starts at 5PM. Plus family wanting to take pictures, plus, plus plus. I'm supremely disappointed that I might not make it there in time or could put others I want to ride up with into 'late jeopardy'... I know people have work-week lives going on. That and this is probably the first time in at least 25 years that both sides of my family have been together in such numbers. I can't just say... OK, ceremony's over... screw your pictures... gotta jet!
:(
I'm willing to be late and stay up late for a second half of their show, etc... but I don't know if anyone else is. Maybe something else fun on the horizon if this is too complex? Or maybe I'm just making this complex because I'm having visiting-my-family guilt... So, let me know your feelings on this... anyone? ... anyone?
Eliza Hodgkins 1812 05-28-2008 10:05 AM
Depending on weekend plans, I may try to catch this show at the art opening this weekend. My first night back in the apartment (after nearly 5 days away) made me realize two things:
1. The place needs a serious **** and spanning before weekend next and it's already Wednesday, and, more importantly,
2. The critters are starving for some attention.
It makes me feel like a spinster to say this, but staying at home with the cats wins this time.
Have fun, all who are able to attend!
Not Afraid 05-28-2008 10:12 AM
We are definitely going. We'll probably get there reasonable early so we have a chance of snagging a couch or some other butt-placement device. By reasonable early, I mean 7:30ish (being optimistic). I know this performance will be MUCH different than the one at the art opening (and very different from the Coachella show I saw), so I'm totally up for doing it all. I may regret it later and I keep my options for bitching open.
Kevy Baby 05-28-2008 10:40 AM
I have thrown in the towel and made a decision I will regret tomorrow morning: Susan and I are going. If anyone from the OC wants to car pool, let me know.
The "Every other Wednesday thing will be continuing for a while at The Edison. Plus there is the Glass Garage Gallery gig this Saturday (which I believe C & L and possibly others are going to).
innerSpaceman 05-29-2008 10:25 AM
Yeah, well, Wednesdays are out ... and there's another LoT thing this Saturday evening that prevents me from attending the Gallery gig.
I'm not complaining that my social life is so active, or that I have a job I can't sleep through. But I hope there's a reasonable chance to see Lucent Dossier in the future. I really wanted to go. But then again, I really want to be 20 years younger!
Let me know if you ever want to go on a Wednesday when I didn't sleep merely 3 hours on the previous Sunday.
Lucent Dossier at the Edison was a blast from the moment we walked through the door where we were greeted by the Green Fairy herself
And proffered to sample her wares - viles of Absinthe shots and other concoctions
Having secured an appropriate dose
We settled in in the glorious decore of the Edison
All that was missing was Captain Nemo
Soon we were offed dessert - Organic Cotton Candy, in the best candy dispenser ever devised
Before long the real entertainment began - and it was everywhere
There is a stage of course, but not with the best sight lines, so it was great that Lucent Dossier took their act all over the venue, showing up here and there performing snipits on stage
In the air
In the Boiler Room
And on the Bars
Even the Green Fairy was Dancing
Along with the Red Ninja
Of course it may have all been a vision due to the cocktails consumed
But I'd gladly do it again to seeif it were real
Cool pics.
At least a couple of those people are Mutants, too :)
Disneyphile 05-30-2008 12:37 AM
Ok, I admit that I had a bit of fun knocking people over with my cleavage. :blush:
Did they do similar stuff to their Coachella show?
Seeing both LD and the Edison in your pics is enough to make me jealous :)
Did you cleave anybody in two?
I was able to upload our photos. Not very many as we failed to grab a fresh battery before departure.
If anyone wants the full size version of any of these photos, let me know.
There was at least one routine from the Coachella show that was imported to the Edison (the one done to the Tin Pan Alley sampled tune), what was fun about this was how they performed around the venue and interacted with the audience.
