The Simpsons Ride

Universal Studios Orlando's "The Simpsons Ride" has soft opened.

Plenty of pictures (and spoilers) here.

lashbear 04-23-2008 08:43 PM

Sounds totally awesone, and I want it, I want it, I want it.

.......even if it IS in a wobbly vibrating building perched precariously on the side of a hill.....

flippyshark 04-23-2008 08:55 PM

Only in Hollywood. Our Orlando Simpsons building is on much more solid footing. Not that I can afford to go check it out just yet. (Or, I could get a part time job there. yeah! That's the ticket!)

CoasterMatt 04-23-2008 09:31 PM

Actually, Lashbear, if you didn't realize, about half of the upper lot "Studio Center" at USH is built on top of a parking structure (All of the area T-2 is built on).

BTTF's building is actually on VERY solid footing, and you enter far above ground level, where the park meets the side of the building :)

NEat -0! I hope it continues when I'm there next week!! :)

Not Afraid 04-23-2008 10:27 PM

Any one want to ride with me and watch the blank look on my face? ;)

Hey Marla- check out the entrance to the ride

Tref 04-23-2008 10:56 PM

Yay!

Moonliner 04-24-2008 04:29 AM

I'll be hitting the Florida version on my June trip so I'm avoiding spoilers for the most part, but what's the general consunsus on the attraction: Bad, meh, OK, great?

I'll miss back to the future so I hope it's worth it.

That would be fun! Then we could follow that up by attending a showing of Spamalot!

CoasterMatt 04-24-2008 08:48 AM

Early reviews have been pretty positive - one good thing is that many of the ride's jokes are related to theme park going in general, so even people who aren't fond of/don't know the Simpsons are enjoying it.

Moonliner 04-24-2008 09:03 AM

Excellent.

I was worried the whole late in the game change to Krustyland would have killed the attraction.

While that was pretty mean since you know I hate clowns, Krusty doesn't bother me. So there. :p

What late in the game change to Krustyland?

mousepod 04-24-2008 09:41 AM

The Krusty mouth reminds me of the room where I proposed to Heather - it's the Carousel Room of The House On The Rock in Wisconsin. There's a giant clown mouth door leading out of that room. It's the first door we went through as an engaged couple. Ah, memories.

innerSpaceman 04-24-2008 09:43 AM

The queue looks awful. Sorry, but I hate the idea that you can paint a bare warehouse with splashy colors, put up some "artwork" of cartoons and call that a themed environment.

Doesn't bode well to me.

Ummm.... The theme IS a really tacky amusement park- you know, kind of like DCA.

I read online (so you know it's true) that the original plan was to use a theme based on Mr. Burns factory, the fish cannery I think, but Harry Shearer (aka Mr. Burns) refused to lend his voice to the project and so it was changed to Crustyland.

Oh, pardon my cynicism, but how convenient for producing a really cheap attraction. Oh, it's a parody of a cheap attraction!!! How clever.

Sorry, but aside from the great Krusty Clown Face entrance, I saw nothing in the queue photos that indicated parody, and everything that smelt of typical six flags.

Yeah, but you're never happy with anything, so...

;)

innerSpaceman 04-24-2008 12:45 PM

oh yes, so much at Disneyland displeases me.

Epcot Center in its heyday made me so unhappy that I vacationed there 10 years in a row.

Paris is the suckiest town on earth.

I could go on ... but - jest or not - I'm pretty tired of the rep that I don't like anything. It's bullsh!t and based on nothing but the fact that I can rip a good hole into the many things I don't like.

I calls 'em as I see's 'em. Indy Queue Good. Krusty Kue Bad.

My post was in jest. But your rep is well earned.

innerSpaceman 04-24-2008 12:53 PM

Yes, I know your post was in jest. I have a great humor decoder. Nonetheless, and though it's all done in good spirits which I always admire, I just wanted to say that the curmudgeon rep is wearing a little thin.

I'm critical of things I don't like. People love to latch onto that for comedy. There's a lot less potentially funny when I gush about things. And, yeah, that's just the nature of comedy.

But I've been getting the feeling (perhaps undeserved) that the jokes have seeped into people's minds as reality. And sure, I am very critical and am quick to point out things I find shoddy, cheap, pathetic or (look away, Gemini Cricket) gay.

I'm just as quick to praise, extoll, laud, glorify and giggle helplessly like a little girl at the many, many, many things I love in this world.

But where's the humor in that???

Fine, humor. I'm a big fan of it. I just don't want it to define me inaccurately.

I can't quite tell yet whether this thread is going to hit bacon at any time soon but please wake me up when it does ;)

Morrigoon 04-24-2008 01:07 PM

Oh no, we had a good ol' time teasing you about San Fran. Your gushiness is nearly as funny as your curmudgeonliness :)

Besides, you know we wuv yous.

Can I just point out the inherent irony in posting how much you hate being labeled as.....

innerSpaceman 04-24-2008 02:43 PM

Which i also detected with ironyometer.

But decided to proceed anyways.

Chernabog 04-24-2008 02:48 PM

This thread is making me feel like this:

Ghoulish Delight 04-24-2008 02:56 PM

You have to see the queue (and hear it, to some extent) in person.
I wouldn't compare it to Indy, but it's better than the last few queues Disney has executed at Disneyland/DCA (Nemo/Buzz/Monsters/Superstar Limo)...

Amy Winehouse the other nite. Poor thing, she's back to Mess.

Kevy Baby 04-24-2008 03:49 PM

I didn't know she stopped being a mess.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 04-24-2008 04:21 PM

Are they gonna finish her mummification or what...?

Cadaverous Pallor 04-24-2008 04:25 PM

I'll stop calling :iSm: a curmudgeon if we can a) find a word that means "opines loudly" instead of "complains loudly" and b) if he stops calling my husband a closet homosexual, a far more undeserved moniker than his own.

It is absolutely undeserved. He isn't in the closet any more.

Deal.

(But for the record, "gayest straight man" is not calling him a closet homo. He's straight, and we all know it ... but with admirably gay tendencies. Playing soccer is not one of them, but his unusually good taste for a straight dude is. The proper term for Mr. Delight is Metrosexual, I suppose. "Gayest Straight Man" has more panache, but a deal's a deal.)

Morrigoon 04-24-2008 07:07 PM

I say we make up an adjective. Though I don't think :ism: would appreciate being told he "Limbaughs"... ;)

Oh, and GD lost his gay-card when he shaved off the face-fur. Sorry. Bear has spoken.

...maybe if CP grows a goatee......

innerSpaceman 04-25-2008 08:07 AM

Well, the first shave was not so great. But then he grew his sideburns out. Yum.

And of course there's all that back hair. ;)

The 'burns came first. I was way too chicken-sh*t to shave the beard without some other form of facial hair already in place.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 05-13-2008 12:59 PM

I got to ride on May 2nd over in Orlando! My brief review below.

Spoiler:
It was a fun ride that is extremely similar to Back to the Future. The que is very "cheep" as ISM said but it works in the atmosphere of the ride. The preshow is hysterical with alot of shots taken at theme parks. The que video that is show is real funny and takes from the show and has new stuff that explains why BTTF is not there anymore and it's now the Simpsons. The animation in the actual ride is not that great. Its all digital animation as apposed the traditional Simpson's animation. But it goes by so fast it's hard to even see. IMHO.

Moonliner 05-13-2008 01:16 PM

Excellent, Headliner and I should be able to catch this as well as Midway mania on our Florida trip next month.

Of course if your spoilered review says "It blows chunks" I will be a bit miffed but I'm still not going to look.

At least I'm assuming the Florida version will be open then...

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 05-13-2008 01:26 PM

Yeah, Florida's Simpsons is OPEN. There are ads on TV and its in the guidemap. It was down for a bit the morning I was there. I also rode Midway Mania but I will discuss that in my big WDW trip report!
