Do you have a degree?

The College for All thread got me thinking.

We're an intelligent group of people. Do we all have higher education?

Multiple Guess and anonymous.

katiesue 05-20-2008 12:36 PM

I have an AA. Lassen Commuinty College class of 1987.

Gemini Cricket 05-20-2008 12:37 PM

BFA in Communications: Film/TV Production
:)

BarTopDancer 05-20-2008 12:40 PM

AA and workin on the BA. I forgot to put an "in progress". Maybe one of our super cool mods can add that.

wendybeth 05-20-2008 12:48 PM

Do you want 'degree in progress' in the poll?

innerSpaceman 05-20-2008 12:53 PM

Meh, I didn't even graduate college. I'm an abject failure. :(

TeeHee ... not.

But I wish I'd taken a year or two off between high school and college. In my 14th straight year of education, I'd had it ... and quit.

Prudence 05-20-2008 12:55 PM

I'm up to 4 degrees.

But I can quit any time. I'm not addicted. I swear!

I feel pretty confident that taking two years between high school college was the only reason I was able to complete college. It was not the plan: I had decided to not go to college after high school, but was lucky enough to have my father offer to cover college after two years in the "real world."

I only checked the BS degree. Technically I have an AA as well, but that is superseded by the BS.

Did you get a BS or did you major in BS?
:D

Capt Jack 05-20-2008 02:17 PM

no

BarTopDancer 05-20-2008 02:22 PM

In CA, an AA is 60 units. A BA/BS is 120 units.

Some schools notate the AA and some you have to apply for.

You can transfer in to a 4-year from a community college without the AA (but with 60 transferable units).

Yes

Brigitte 05-20-2008 02:31 PM

I have a BA in Communication, Journalism. Washington State University, Class of '93 - Go Cougs :)

Obviously it was a useful waste of 4 years of my life.

Alex 05-20-2008 02:37 PM

Friends don't let friends go to WSU.

Or so said the t-shirts available for sale in the bookstore when I went to college.

Strangler Lewis 05-20-2008 03:21 PM

Who's the PhD in the joint?

BarTopDancer 05-20-2008 03:34 PM

3894 I believe (outting her cause she announced it in the other college thread).

That would be 3894 (AKA Helen)

Motorboat Cruiser 05-20-2008 03:48 PM

I graduated from the Musician's Institute in 1984, which I suppose counts as a vocational school. After graduation, I went to community college and, if I recall correctly, earned somewhere around 45-50 units before leaving to work full-time. One of these days, I may just head back and finish up my AA at least.

tracilicious 05-20-2008 04:11 PM

Do credit hours ever expire, I wonder?

LSPoorEeyorick 05-20-2008 04:18 PM

I've a BFA in theater performance (concentration in directing) and a BA in English (concentration in writing)... but my degrees don't show the 30 or so credit hours in film production and theory that I took (more, in fact, than my husband did - and he has a degree in it from another [very excellent, mind you] film school.)

As it turns out, my degrees have been very useful. Not necessarily in the sense that I can get a job because of them (though I probably have) but because the stuff I learned has been extremely helpful in my current job. Critical thinking, lots of writing, understanding of film and structure... and it'll all be extremely helpful in my goal-job, making films (instead of marketing them, as currently is my daily bread.)

For film or theater would-bees who think they can be successful without film/theater school... well, yes and no. You can't train someone without natural talent to be naturally talented - but you can make them educated about what is good and bad, you can help them improve. On the other hand, what good is natural talent without a solid background in their chosen art? It is the wisdom from my professors (and I KNOW from Tom's, too) that really matters, and is really the core benefit of participating in a film or theater program.

I have a BS in Political Science. I considered law school but decided it wasn't for me. Course I don't really use by degree anyways! I'm pretty sure no one wants a disertation on Socrates or Plato.

At least the Political Scinece Professor I had. He made an example out of me and made fun of me a lot because I voted for Harry Browne in 2000.

I'm half tempted to go back for a second bachelor's. I'd like to do an MBA eventually, but don't feel I'm in a good enough spot in my current career to a)make the most of the experience in terms of what positions I could get after school, and b) to get into a decent school, assuming I could afford it, which I can't.
