When Seat Belts Attack

Ken and I were to meet a couple friends at the park first thing this morning. When we parked, my seat belt in his car wouldn't unlatch. The button had somehow jammed.

So, I stretched it all the way out to start climbing out, when it snapped back in and the tension locked. We tried restarting the car, but it wouldn't give. I tried wriggling a bit more, and it locked even worse, with the upper strap behind my back and the lower belt having sunk below my stomach, digging into my hipbone to the point that I was crying.

I wish I could have laughed, but it was damn painful and scary. We ended up leaving right away to head home and grab some WD40 and/or scissors. (Thank the gods we live close.)

We finally had to cut it off.

He's calling Honda and seeing what can be done about it, because it sounds like a bad defect, especially with it locking up like that.

We also started talking about how seat belts should have a manual override of sorts on the tension mechanism, because if it happened to a solo driver, it could possibly leave them trapped if no one were around and a cellphone wasn't within reach.

Anyway, that was my morning adventure. I thought I'd share, because it was just so bizarre.

That is bizarre, and I hope you aren't bruised or feeling too bad...

Disneyphile 06-11-2008 07:29 PM

I'm a little bruised on my hips, and rather frightened of seat belts at the moment. Ken ended up dropping me at the park after the ordeal, and I refused to ride anything with something other than a lap bar. ;)

That is bizarre!

I know my dads Honda tension locks all the time. So annoying.

Totally!

I didn't mean to imply that what happened to you was annoying. That was dangerous and scary.

I know. :)

Hopefully, Honda will take it seriously. Ken's car isn't even 4 years old yet, and has less than 30,000 miles on it.

Yikes! I'm glad you're okay. Sorry you're bruised, man that is bizzare. Nothing on the Honda site about this kind of deal..This sounds like a warranty/recall issue

Not Afraid 06-11-2008 09:37 PM

I believe Chris' CRV had a seatbelt recall a few years ago.

You might look into buying one of these and keeping it in your console within reach of the front passengers.

I'm glad you're doing okay, and hopefully Honda will make good on the crazy seat belt.

NickO'Time 06-12-2008 12:50 AM

Yikes! Something to look out for in our Hondas.

Sorry you had to go through that DP.

lashbear 06-12-2008 02:33 AM

I'm SO glad you weren't alone. I agree, a manual release would be an idea.

Nephythys 06-12-2008 05:33 AM

That seat belt was always crazy when I rode in the car too.

Maybe it doesn't like girls.;)

Glad you are ok-

RStar 06-12-2008 06:35 AM

Wow, perhaps you need an exorcist! That was scarry! I hope you heal physically and emotionally quickly!

This device is particularly handy in the event of unruly kids in the back seat.

alphabassettgrrl 06-12-2008 11:45 AM

Yikes! I'm glad you got away from the aggressive seatbelt. Hopefully it can be fixed properly.
