Sell Your Swank! (August 16th-17th, 2008)

Hi everyone!

Just talked with Wolfy999, and she's offered up her ginormous well-located front yard for a multiple-family yard sale on August 16th and 17th. (She's had people line up as early as 6am on previous sales, and has made a small mint, due to location - in Garden Grove, not far from Disneyland, between 4 major roads.)

This gives us plenty of time to rummage through our old treasures and make some nice cash. Just about anything can be sold, so even if you don't want to part with old junk, try making up some art, crafts, BBQ items, or even baked goodies. There is plenty of room for just about anything you want to sell.

At the end of the two days, you're welcome to take back any remaining stuff, or leave it for the donation pick-up later that afternoon.

Also, if you can't be present the whole time, someone always will be, and all sales will be tracked. However, you are responsible for bringing, displaying and pricing your own stuff.

For those of you who want to join in, we could also use some extra tables and tarps for display that day, so if you have any to lend, that would be swell. I'll even bring my EZ-up so we have some shade to sit under, or to display any sun-sensitive items. Wolfy will advertise in the OCRegister, and I'll make signs for the streets. Any other advertising assistance (even if it's just plugging Craig's List for us) would be great.

Please vote your interest in the poll above, and we'll have more details in the coming month.

Morrigoon 06-18-2008 10:33 PM

Huh... good idea!

Disneyphile 06-18-2008 10:35 PM

Poll's up now.

wolfy999 06-18-2008 10:38 PM

Yep...one and all are welcome!

Let's make some extra cash to off set the economy thats setting us all back a bit!

katiesue 06-19-2008 08:51 AM

I've got a card table and a tarp. Plus a ton o stuff.

Snowflake 06-19-2008 08:55 AM

Boy, I'd love to, but I'd eat up any potential profit driving my crap down from SF. :(

Good luck guys, a great idea!

BarTopDancer 06-19-2008 09:03 AM

Where does she live?

How do you track which stuff belongs to what person?

BDBopper 06-19-2008 09:06 AM

What a fantastic idea! :) And also great two-month notice on this. Can I send a box of stuff or is this only for locals?

Garden Grove, nestled between Euclid, Brookhurst, Katella, and Orangewood.

Simple - when pricing your stuff, put your initials on your tags/stickers, then the amount is written down next to your name. Then, everything gets tallied at the end of the day and distributed. (Read: Spreadsheet with columns with each person's name at the top.)

I grew up doing this with my aunts and such, and it goes very smoothly. People just need to make sure to use good stickers/tags (so they don't fall off), and put their initials on them. A description of the items sold can also be written next to the selling price on the spreadsheet, if anyone has concern over what exactly they sold. Each amount is always written down separately, like a receipt.

It takes two people to run the cash table - one to handle the cash, and one to maintain the spreadsheet.

Oh, and my friend J. is going to join us that day as well. (Some of you know her.) She might be making some crafts to sell. :)

Kevy Baby 06-19-2008 01:16 PM

One question: I haven't participated in a garage sale in some time, but don't people usually haggle when making purchases? How will that be handled?

Ponine 06-19-2008 02:00 PM

In my family there is an agreed upon "what we will haggle on" before hand.

Any price changes are then noted on the price stickers if they are collected, or list.

But most times, in our circle, it ends of being a reason to gather, chat, drink, beer, and tan. No one ever leaves.

BDBopper 06-19-2008 02:03 PM

I can now see how this would be difficult for a non-local. Still a great idea though. Kudos to T & D for having it. :snap:

What Ponine said. ;)

Disneyphile 07-29-2008 10:23 AM

Bumping this back up to remind everyone that we have just over two weeks to gather up our old stuff. :)

katiesue 07-29-2008 10:30 AM

We went through Maddy's closet last weekend - 6 bags of clothes so far.

Disneyphile 07-29-2008 10:35 AM

I'm going through clothes this weekend. I decided it's time, since I can't put them all away without literally stuffing them into the drawers or piling on the closet floor, both of which are unacceptable. Time to get rid of crap I haven't worn in awhile, so my stuff can remain clean and non-wrinkled.

JWBear 07-29-2008 10:52 AM

Bill and I are in! We can bring our own tables.

BarTopDancer 07-29-2008 10:59 AM

I forgot about this. I should go through my stuff at home and at my parents.

Disneyphile 07-29-2008 11:17 AM

And, for those of you who are saving time by marking stuff as you're pulling it, don't forget to put your initials on the tags, so we know who gets the dough. :)

The night before, I'll print out a spreadsheet log so we can keep track of everything sold.

Oh, and a suggestion to sellers - please save up some plastic grocery bags and newspapers to wrap any fragile items.

wolfy999 07-29-2008 11:21 AM

I have a few tables/benches to use, but we're going to need more by the sounds of it. Thanks JW for pitching in a couple! Anyone else who can bring tables/benches (folding works best)?

katiesue 07-29-2008 11:44 AM

I've got a card table.

I'm bringing 3 and an EZ-up.

Kevy Baby 07-29-2008 12:09 PM

Thanks for bumping this back up - I was thinking about this the other day.

I grew up doing multi-family yardsales. We always had one in late summer and January with a few family friends and my aunts. :)

MouseWife 07-29-2008 12:53 PM

Sounds like there are a couple of you fantastic yard sellers here. Your history sounds like Ponines....I think this sale, with the location location location will be a hit!!

Well, I think with your, DP, skills with your work {including editing, I suck at photo editing...can't ever make up my mind....} you are a Queen at Organization.

{wait, I remember your comment about your overflowing drawers...but, you do see it as an issue, so, I guess that still leans towards organization}.

They weren't overflowing until I bought some new clothes a few months ago, and then realized I had no space for 'em. So, yeah... out with the old crap!

DreadPirateRoberts 07-29-2008 01:45 PM

Everytime I read this thread title, I think of something different. I must stop reading KB posts.

BarTopDancer 07-29-2008 01:50 PM

With a few exceptions, if you haven't worn it in a year you're probably going to never wear it again.

wolfy999 07-29-2008 08:45 PM

Those of you who need the address...PM me.

Not Afraid 07-30-2008 09:31 AM

I need to get stuff together. Oh, and talk to Chris about it. ;)

BDBopper 07-30-2008 11:11 AM

Sounds like this is going to be a fun & successful venture. Too bad I can't participate!

Has anyone submitted this to Craigslist and other places that yard sales can be posted about?

Dawned on me....we have NO SHADE in our front yard!

Anyone have one of those tarp thingys to give us sellers some shade?

I have an EZ-up that I plan on using over the cash table. ;)

Also, I do have some tarps to display more stuff on the lawn if needed.

Oh, and I'm going to make up a flyer and can send the file to anyone who wants to print some for their work break room, etc. I'd like to list some of what we're all selling. So, does anyone have specifics like furniture, art, cookware, etc.? I already figured that clothing is one of 'em.

And, I will also need the specific hours that the sale will be open.

wolfy999 08-02-2008 10:52 AM

I'm thinking let's only do 1 day...August 16th and have it run from 7AM until 3PM.

Since just one day, how about 'til 4 or 5? It's your home, so the final decision is yours, but there are sometimes latecomers.

Disneyphile 08-02-2008 11:35 AM

Ok, just spoke to Wolfy.

We're doing it on Saturday only from 7am-3pm, with the option of running later if customers are still coming.

Please bring a dish or snacks to share and your own drinks (a cooler and ice will be provided). We'll have a nice little potluck buffet set up all day in the kitchen for the sellers.

Also, if you have any collectibles that you wish to sell, but don't want them handled much, Wolfy is offering an inside table for display upon customer request. A sign will be posted on the EZ-up that reads, "More collectibles available inside, viewable by request."

For anything that doesn't sell and you don't want to haul back, a donation pick-up will be scheduled.

katiesue 08-02-2008 11:39 AM

We've been cleaning closets here. Mostly Maddy's clothes so far but I'll get to the better stuff next weekend.

Any general guidelines on pricing?

wolfy999 08-02-2008 11:41 AM

Whatever you think you can get.....? People are cheap, keep that in mind.

Sub la Goon 08-02-2008 11:54 AM

I like boobies.

And pancakes.

Make sure you mention any collectible type stuff on a Craigslist posting and probably post on MiceChat Collectible - Merch Buy/Sell/Trade forum.

Wish I could go and shop, but finances are tight.

JWBear 08-02-2008 11:58 AM

We have a rolling clothes rack, but no way of getting it there.

wolfy999 08-02-2008 12:04 PM

We're not that far....just roll it in!

Disneyphile 08-02-2008 12:13 PM

I usually price-to-sell. So, here is my basic guideline for non-collectible items:

10-15% of the original price/value, depending on condition and brand name of item.

(i.e. $100 evening gown worn more than 5 or 6 times - $10. $100 Guess jeans in good repair - $15. Generic Walmart jeans - $2. Basic coffee maker - $2. Short veneer bookcase, no scratches - $6. Tall oak bookcase, light scratches - $15.)

The only exception to that rule are well-read paperback books which I'll usually price at 25-50 cents each.

I keep it cheap, and I usually have very little left by day's end, and a nice pile of cash.

katiesue 08-02-2008 01:11 PM

Thanks for the info. I've been apartment living for the last 20ish years so I'm out of garage sale mode.

wolfy999 08-02-2008 01:19 PM

Have posted an ad on the local Pennysaver Internet site and in the Community Outpost on Micechat. T is taking care of Craig's List....any other free or very low cost suggestions?

I'm making up the flyer tonight and will post the link so everyone can download and print up some to post at work/school/etc.

The Craigs List posting starts tomorrow.

katiesue 08-10-2008 02:06 PM

Yay - I'm starting to pull stuff out. Maddy's polo thing got cancelled so she's in as well. Now to start pricing everything.

€uroMeinke 08-10-2008 02:14 PM

We're in and bringing some Disney collectables and god know what else.

wolfy999 08-10-2008 05:21 PM

Don't forget to bring something to share for snacking during the day....for the sellers only of course. We'll have a cooler and ice available for any drinks you may wish to bring along also. Wolfette will have lemonade for sale if you want to support her Webkinz habit!

Disneyphile 08-10-2008 11:17 PM

We've only made a slight dent in the crap we're pulling for the sale, and already have a nice pile in the living room. But, I can say, it is SO liberating to get rid of stuff that I haven't touched in years.

We also really need the dough right now, so I'm not even really hesitating on anything. I can't wait to tear through my dresser and closet, because I know there's probably at least a large garbage bag or two of clothes I can part with.

By the way, my friend Jessica is also bringing stuff to the sale and helping out. Looks like we'll have a pretty good-sized crowd. :)

Wolfy - I hope your yard's gonna be big enough. ;)

Oh, and do you have an outdoor outlet? We were going to bring a large cord and power strip to plug stuff in to show it works. (Like Ken's old stereo and my old sewing machine.) We can also bring an extra power strip in case anyone else needs to plug in too.

Disneyphile 08-12-2008 10:38 AM

Printing to what? If it is your desktop printer, it will probably look okay. The file in the posted JPEG is low res.

If it is a stock Mircrosoft image, it is probably just 72 dpi.

If we don't sell certain things of ours, any seller is welcome to 'em at the end of the day, lest they go in the donation pick-up. There are only a few collectible things we'll take back if they don't sell.

I am selling each of my DVDs for $900.00. That way, if I sell 6 I'll be virtually debt free. These people better be rich.

Some collectors do buy those, yes. As for collectible pricing, I would do a search for completed listings on eBay for a general ballpark figure on each item and go from there. That's what I'm doing with collectible stuff.

Also, just a reminder to everyone again - DON'T FORGET TO ADD YOUR INITIALS TO YOUR PRICETAGS!!!

Sorry for the shouting reminder, but it really is important - trust me. Especially if you want your money. ;)

Roll Call so far (I'm including families under one name - if anyone should be separate, please let me know, because this will help when I make the sales spreadsheet columns):

Gemini Cricket

Please let me know if I forgot you. My brain's a bit scrambled at the moment.

Oh, and Wolfy - mind if we bring the tables and EZ-up over the night before? We're gonna need all the room in the car for the stuff, and we're bringing 3-4 tables which will take up a lot of room.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 08-12-2008 10:54 PM

I've had other things come up. Also I was hoping to be moved by now and have access to my stuff - but I don't.

Of course...I was expecting you to stop by Friday anyways....we need to put up signs (at least 3) on street corners.

wolfy999 08-12-2008 11:55 PM

List of things to bring (along with the stuff you want to sell, of course):

Plastic Grocery Bags
Newspaper if you have fragile things
Snacks to share
Tables if you have them
Shade thingys if you have them
Blankets if we don't have enough tables
Drinks (we'll have a cooler with ice)

Also a positive attitude....we're going to be able to retire after this;) .

BarTopDancer 08-13-2008 08:16 AM

You can pull me off the list. Apparently we're going to either LA or San Diego, so "later" isn't going to work.

Not Afraid 08-13-2008 08:35 AM

I now have 3 visits to do before I head out to the sale. I'm either going to have to get up at the crack of dawn or come a little later to the sale. I wonder which it will be?

Not Afraid 08-14-2008 11:07 AM

I'm trying to be ruthless in my choices for garage sale items. I've got LOTS of Disney artwork/posters/prints/etc that are probably worth more than a garage will bring for them but I've been meaning to sell them om ebay for about 4 years now. If I haven't done it yet, I'm probably not going to do it, so into the garage sale pile it goes. The sad part is that, I STILL have a lot more Disneyland stuff I'm NOT selling. I forgot m,y collection was so big.

wolfy999 08-14-2008 11:59 AM

Just might be buying each other's stuff by the sounds of it!

Gemini Cricket 08-14-2008 12:01 PM

My mantra: No buy. Sell!

:D

Moonliner 08-14-2008 12:09 PM

Garage sales are funny things. In the past, just to get rid of stuff, I marked everything as "Free". Hardly anyone took anything.

The next time I tired marking stuff with higher prices and doing a discounted sale...
8:00-8:30am Marked price,
8:30-9:00am 25% off
9:00 - 9:30am 50%
9:30-10:00am 75% off
after 10:00am free.

It was like I set out a buffet for locusts. Almost everything was gone before 10:00am.

How much for your soul? Or will I get a better price on Saturday?

Who has our extra tents from camping? Kevy, did I send those home with you?

Disneyphile 08-14-2008 03:28 PM

Yeah, we gave 'em to Kevy to haul back.

BarTopDancer 08-14-2008 03:29 PM

If anyone comes across a rectangularish shaped plastic serving tray with blue, green and white geometric shapes on it, it's mine. I left it somewhere after some party.

Morrigoon 08-14-2008 04:42 PM

BTD: My house! I'm sure I saw one like that cleaning up from a party... didn't I give it back to you yet? I'll have to go looking now...

BarTopDancer 08-14-2008 04:44 PM

C, I don't think I've ever been to your house.

Maybe it ended up coming home with you at some point, but it's been missing for several years now.

Disneyphile 08-14-2008 04:53 PM

So that's where that came from!

We'll sell it back to you for just 5 dollah, BTD! ;)

(Just kidding... we don't have it.)

Pins are a good idea.

Also, we will have a bar to hang some clothing items. I'm bringing two c-stands with a large crossbar that normally supports industrial backdrops and lighting. So, we have about 10-feet of hanging space, possibly 20, if it will extend that far. :)

katiesue 08-14-2008 07:22 PM

Maddy grew 3 plus inches in just the last year - I've got 6 bags of just her clothes. Most barely worn before she was onto the next size.

JWBear 08-14-2008 07:39 PM

We have clothes too.

JWBear 08-14-2008 07:43 PM

Oh... And I'm bringing a shyt load of vintage melmac to sell. Melmac Mania!

Disneyphile 08-15-2008 01:53 AM

Ken and I just finished in the garage. We've got two full carloads, but that also includes tables, chairs, and shade.

I'll also be attempting to sell my vintage un-punched Black Hole Cygnus and V.i.n.c.e.n.t. model kits. If those sell, I'll be a very happy camper, because they're worth quite a bit. Of course, those will be displayed with the high-end collectibles inside to keep kids away from 'em.

But, we've got probably 100 books all individually tagged, a ton of crafty things, some Disney pin sets, loads of clothes, and a bunch of miscellaneous crap. We are beat!

But, it's a helluva lot better than using up valuable sleeping time tomorrow night so we can get up at the asscrack of dawn on Saturday.

Oh, and we also uncovered a potential small gold mine - in one of Ken's storage boxes were literally over 200 vintage Boy Scout patches and pins from the 60's and 70's, given to him by his great aunt. We're cataloging them next week, and those are going on eBay. Some of them are worth $35-$50 each. :D

I couldn't find it anyway, so whoever's it was, I must've gotten it back to them.

If I end up participating in the sale, I'd be a late addition (as in later Saturday). Just as I'm starting to see items I'd be interested in selling, I'm realizing we have too much going on for me to get to the sale on time :/ Consider me unlikely.

wolfy999 08-15-2008 09:17 AM

Someone has already stopped by the house (today at 9AM) to check and see what kind of dolls we'd be selling.....I have 2 boxed Collectible Barbies. We have a buyer for dolls....anyone bringing dolls?

Kevy Baby 08-15-2008 09:26 AM

Due to stuff that came up*, and the fact that we have not had time to really pull stuff together and price it, we will not be able to make it. We had been trying, but we had not committed.

But I am curious about one thing. I had inherited a large collection of dog figurines (enough to fill an entire curio cabinet). Any idea on how to start finding values on something like this? They are mostly porcelain, but also glass and metal.

* Have to get new tires installed on Saturday and we have to take one of the chameleons into the vet on Saturday for a growth on his leg.

Not Afraid 08-15-2008 09:31 AM

How are people pricing Disney pins? I have mine broken down like this:
Regular $1
Limited Edition $2
Sets $5

I'm also selling figurines and S&P shakers for $5.

Disney T's are $2

Sound about right?

I'm not going to be pricing pins since there are way too many. I will let people pick what they want, bag them up and price the lot.

My stickers have the price then my initials under the price:

$5
LC

Also, I'm not g

Sell Your Swank! (August 16th-17th, 2008)

Good luck to everyone. I am spending the entire weekend except for Sunday (that will be half of the day asleep) with my Jovi friends who are coming from Nothern CA starting this afternoon. Gonna do some sightseeing and eating out and talking Jovi today. :) If i didn't have plans i have tons of junk to sell. Oh well. Good luck.

If there are Disney collectors coming to the sale, my guess is you could double the asking price on the pins (except sets) and they're still getting a steal. Besides, that leaves room for negotiation if they ask for a "bulk" deal.

Like label all of them?

I'd be doing this until sometime in November if we did it that way.

Not Afraid 08-15-2008 10:13 AM

As far as pricing pins goes, my goal is to get rid of them and make some money. I don't mind being priced too low if it moves the crap out of my possession. I just don't want to undercut anyone else.

JWBear 08-15-2008 10:14 AM

How will the cashier know which pins are whos?

Morrigoon 08-15-2008 10:17 AM

I bet you could create paper "labels" by copying a price and initials in an Excel spreadsheet, copy and paste it into a bunch of cells, print up the page, and just pin the pin to the paper. Quicker than hand writing on stickers.

Not Afraid 08-15-2008 10:18 AM

I'm going to bag mine up after they are chosen by the customer then put a price sticker on the outside. It actually might be easier for me to just do the pin transactions myself.

I've done price stickers on lables for all of my stuff except pins. I have about 1000 pins. It would take me all day just to get them un-pinned from the pin books, let along price them.

Morrigoon 08-15-2008 10:30 AM

A thousand?

No wonder you didn't want to price them, heheh! I was just throwing that suggestion out there, since other people are selling pins as well, and hand writing that small is a pain.

Cadaverous Pallor 08-15-2008 10:37 AM

Category #of pins Price per Total

Please do not tell Maddy about the pins, hde them. Luckily she doesn't have the cash to buy them all.

Disneyphile 08-15-2008 01:21 PM

I just posted about this on MousePad too. :)

NA, I think your pins are going to be very popular. ;)

Disneyphile 08-15-2008 01:35 PM

Oh, and folks, when arriving in the morning, feel free to pull up front to unload, and then please park further down the street and come back to set-up, so that we can leave the area open for others to unload prior to customers arriving. :)

Not Afraid 08-15-2008 06:49 PM

Is someone going to be inside staffing the collectables table?

Disneyphile 08-15-2008 06:52 PM

The collectables will be viewed by request/escort only (I'm making a sign that tells people to ask to view), so yes. :)

Also, here's a great tip on pricing clothes - staple your tags on when needed. They act like pins, but don't fall off and poke anyone.

JWBear 08-15-2008 08:57 PM

Ok... We just finished packing the cars (yes, the plural was intentional... we're bringing both our cars, stuffed to the gills). The only thing we couldn't bring is our six foot folding table. It just will not fit in my Mini. We do have two smaller folding tables.

wolfy999 08-15-2008 09:16 PM

Gemini Cricket 08-15-2008 10:04 PM

Not Afraid 08-15-2008 10:45 PM

car is loaded with most of the stuff. I'm at my overnight. The alarm is set for four am. Ouch.

Disneyphile 08-16-2008 01:16 AM

I'm still up making directional signs. Ugh.

Morrigoon 08-16-2008 02:49 AM

I'm out... can't coordinate it in any way that makes sense with what else is going on that day (and the fact that I'm still up). But if anybody comes to the park afterwards, you'll find me on my actual attraction till about 5:40pm.

(And this realization comes after I've finally started thinking of things that I would have liked to sell, pfft. Not enough to throw my schedule off over though)

katiesue 08-16-2008 04:34 AM

We're hitting the road

wolfy999 08-16-2008 04:43 AM

It was fun! Sold some crap and made some money for our trip next month. Made a new cat friend. Thurston slept on my foot. Used The Secret to make Lisa buy melmac...

BDBopper 08-16-2008 05:05 PM

Fantastic!

Wow, NA, a Grand? That's awesome! I had a feeling that there was going to be good money made during this sale!

Ya know there is only one good thing about missing a sale like this one...I was not tempted to buy stuff and i can tell without knowing what the items sold were that you would have had to drag me away before I blow a whole bunch of money I shouldn't be spending.

I am going to have to figure out how to sell off a bunch of things i have that I don't need anymore on one day. It's not as easy as you think...my neighborhood does not do yard sales (too small).

wolfy999 08-16-2008 08:04 PM

I made around $850 and spent under $25 and I think I found a sofa for about $1000 (I've got an additional $200 in tips from the past 2 weeks to add to the sofa pot, so it might all work out.

MouseWife 08-17-2008 08:25 PM

Congrats to all of you!!!

Especially doing it in this summer heat.

Did you guys get a lot of Lookie Loos? Here, anymore, we rarely get people to stop by and really expect to pay more than .25 for anything. Seriously.

I went to the swapmeet today and there were a lot of garage sellers. Times are hard. Actually, there were a lot of empty stalls. I think that people couldn't afford the sellers' fee, maybe.

So, I again commend you all for doing such a wonderful job!

{NA, yay for you and a new sofa!!!}

Cadaverous Pallor 08-17-2008 09:31 PM

Wow, wtg!

Disneyphile 08-18-2008 10:29 AM

We made $143, and that was without selling any of our big-ticket items.

Story of the day:

Around 12:30, a couple with a little 4yo daughter bought a few items, one of which was GC's copy of South Park: Bigger Longer Uncut on VHS. While taking their cash, I commented to the dad that it's a great film. In broken English, he said, "It's for her. It looks cute. She picked it." and handed the tape to his little girl, who started smiling and pointing at the characters on the box while carrying it to the car.

I couldn't say anything, because I was in disbelief. Ken, who was sitting next to me raised his book to his face and was practically in tears. While they were getting in their car, I asked Ken, "Am I just tired, or did they seriously just buy South Park for their little girl?" Ken affirmed that I wasn't just tired, and much laughter followed.

I could only deduce this theory that led them to this purchase: it was VHS, meaning they're possibly a lower income family and wouldn't even have cable, added with the cultural differences, so they wouldn't have a clue as to what South Park is.

I kept praying for the next couple hours that they wouldn't watch the tape right away and come back.

Although, I kinda chuckle at the thought if they decide to let her watch the movie unattended and the little lass shows up at Kindergarten, teaching other kids how to sing "Uncle ****er".

Kevy Baby 08-18-2008 10:52 AM

wolfy999 08-18-2008 06:51 PM

Profit was about $100.00, that is with deducting what was spent.

Not Afraid 08-19-2008 08:56 AM

wolfy999 08-19-2008 09:19 AM

No, I meant the money I spent on purchases from the sale itself. Don't be silly NA, putting on the sale was my pleasure!

katiesue 08-19-2008 09:26 AM
