Secretary (movie)

What an interesting little find of a movie. Anyone else seen this delightful (ha!) movie about a secretary and her boss James Spader? I stumbled upon a scene from it on YouTube and had to go find it online to watch. Sadly, it was in 2 parts and I've only located parts 1 and 2 so now I must actually go rent it to see the (hopefully) exciting conclusion. :snap:

Ghoulish Delight 06-24-2008 07:18 AM

Great movie.

Betty 06-24-2008 07:34 AM

:) Indeed. Any others that I might like based upon liking that one? (that are rentable in a regular movie store, if you get my drift.)

Ghoulish Delight 06-24-2008 07:48 AM

The one that everyone points to is The Story of O (Histoire d'O), a French movie from 1975. I haven't seen it myself. Don't know how available it is.

€uroMeinke 06-24-2008 08:00 AM

Are you talking erotic films in general, or those with a Dom & Sub bent?

mousepod 06-24-2008 08:38 AM

Don't miss The Night Porter.

I've read some of that at sometime in my life. Probably a bit over the top for my tastes if my memory serves me right.

Both!?! :) But I'm thinking of the D/S at the moment, I think. Unless you have something in mind that's very good.

Alex 06-24-2008 09:12 AM

Last Tango in Paris is the first thing that comes to mind.

A note in regard to mousepod's recommendation of The Night Porter; I watched it based on an earlier recommendation on this board and I found it dreadfully dull.

For more generally erotic/mildly kinky I'd suggest The Pillow Book.

mousepod 06-24-2008 09:21 AM

Or for the more mainstream, what about 9 1/2 Weeks?

Cadaverous Pallor 06-24-2008 09:21 AM

I LOVE Secretary. If there are more films like it we must see them. :D

Betty 06-24-2008 09:26 AM

I havne't seen 9 1/2 weeks in ages but loved it when I did.

LOL - then perhaps I won't be the only one to benefit (ahem) from this thread.

LSPoorEeyorick 06-24-2008 09:44 AM

I adored Secretary - it is probably among my top 15 favorites. I'll recommend the director's next film, which several people did not like (but I enjoyed - though not as much as Secretary.) It's Fur, an Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus, starring Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr.

Betty 06-24-2008 09:47 AM

From the reviews I'm read - it seems you either LOVE it or hate the movie Secretary. Interesting to read the reviews. Some people just don't "get it".

Not Afraid 06-24-2008 10:45 AM

LOVED Secretary!

Story of O was good for soft porn, but not good filmmaking (but I saw it almost 30 years ago). I wonder how it would hold up now.

Pillow Book is wonderful and I'm liking Last Tango more and more (I hated it the first time I saw it).

I know there are others but nothing is coming to mind at the moment.

innerSpaceman 06-24-2008 10:52 AM

I'm in the HATED it camp.

Or rather, didn't care for it. The psychologys just struck me as false and improbable (yet hardly unheard of or impossible). Perhaps because I know quite a few people with the Dom/sub bent, it just struck me as terribly off-key about the admittedly prominent psychoses I personally have come across.

I think my personal feelings prevented me from appreciating it as cinema, so perhaps it's a very good film. The performances were great.

Okay then - what does qualify as a good film of that bent in your opinion? Always looking for more suggestions!

Gemini Cricket 06-24-2008 10:58 AM

Interested in seeing Secretary now.
:)

You know, I can't think of a single erotic gay mainstream film. There needs to be more of them.

Strangler Lewis 06-24-2008 10:58 AM

The Pillow Book is a clever, beautiful film. Oddly, it is also a crashing bore that is about twice as long as it needed to be. And it wasn't that long.

Bent. That's hysterical.
:D

Strangler Lewis 06-24-2008 11:00 AM

If we're prison bound, then there's the Ilse series.

mousepod 06-24-2008 11:06 AM

I'd say there are plenty of mainstream films with homoerotic undertones... like The Hitcher, for example.

Oh undertones, totally. I just watched Shane last night. ;) I was thinking about mainstream, in your face, erotic gay films.

Not Afraid 06-24-2008 11:08 AM

Women in Love?

Love that scene. Love love love. Mostly because I think wrestling is hot.
:)

Not Afraid 06-24-2008 11:14 AM

I also adore that scene. My 2 all time favorite "sex" scenes in films are that scene from WiL and the lesbian scene from The Hunger.

Gemini Cricket 06-24-2008 11:15 AM

I remember really liking the sex scene on the stairs in History of Violence. I should rewatch that one...

mousepod 06-24-2008 11:17 AM

What about Spetters?

Not Afraid 06-24-2008 11:18 AM

I haven't seen Spetters in so long! I don't want to work today. I want to watch movies.

GC, what are you up to today?

Actually, I have a date this afternoon. And maybe then going to the Love Honor Cherish thing.

mousepod 06-24-2008 11:22 AM

I've got the uncut DVD.

Wanna come by and watch Spetters tomorrow or Thursday night?

I watched Disney's Camp Rock last night and need to see something a little more... mature.

Gemini Cricket 06-24-2008 11:25 AM

I've never heard of Spetters. Must research.

mp ~ Camp Rock? **shudder**....

innerSpaceman 06-24-2008 11:27 AM

Yes, what's this "Spetters" of which you post? And what an odd title.

As for Betty's earlier question, I don't know of a single film that depicts any recognizable (to me) Dom/sub psychosis dynamic, gay or straight.

Not Afraid 06-24-2008 11:36 AM

MP, I can do Wednesday but not Thursday.

Hmmm... I thought you'd have something good for me... just seems like something you might know about. How about other kinky movies in general?

Spetters is a wonderful Dutch film made by a pre-Basic Instinct Paul Verhoeven. It's about a group of young friends who are into motorcycle racing. To say more would be to give away plot points.

As for the title, I'll quote AllMovieGuide:
Quote:

The title of Spetters is an indigenous triple-entendre -- it refers to the Dutch vernacular for "grease spatterings" (both the the oily renderings left behind by the motorcycles commandeered by the film's central characters and the grease slung by Soutendjik), is a slang term for male ejaculate, and was frequently used in the seventies and eighties to refer to people who are sexually appealing ("That girl is a spetter.")
So, anyone else up for a screening? GC? iSm?

Gemini Cricket 06-24-2008 12:05 PM

I want to see it.

innerSpaceman 06-24-2008 12:14 PM

Me, too!

I don't know if kinky is the right word, but Short Bus is a FANTASTIC movie.

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 06-24-2008 01:11 PM

I love the movie. It's a beautiful and strange love story.

Also second mp's The Night Porter recommendation, though I'd describe that as more erotic and horrifying.

Priest was very good. Don't know if that qualifies as mainstream or not, but it was advertised and widely reviewed, if I recall correctly.

Saw it. I liked it. I guess it did have its erotic moments...
:)

mousepod 06-24-2008 01:35 PM

What about Wong Kar-Wai's Happy Together or Ming Liang Tsai's The River?

If this week doesn't work, we could have a CDM© screening on July 5 or 6...

innerSpaceman 06-24-2008 01:38 PM

Tony L. is Hot Hot Hot in Happy Together, but I HATED the movie. A couple so dysfunctional it's just disturbing. Oh, and with the most horrible cinematography and editing I think I've ever seen in a released film.

Hard to belive what a polished look the director achieved just a couple of years later.

Didn't see The River.

Beautiful Thing was nice. Big Eden, too.

I'd argue that the cinematography/editing was completely intentional. Happy Together was released three years after my two favorite Wong Kar-Wai movies, Ashes Of Time and Chung King Express.

Too many tangents for me to handle right now, though. If you want to get into a Wong Kar-Wai discussion, we can get into it later... and maybe even have a mini-film festival...

Strangler Lewis 06-24-2008 02:07 PM

I saw Spetters at the Castro back in 1980. First mainstream movie I saw that had hand-to-whatsits contact.

The Fourth Man--same director, several of the same actors--had its moments, too.

Well, perhaps if it was supposed to be shot by one of the hapless gay men on their $2 a day budget, but otherwise ... I'm not buying it. The cinematography is one thing (and a bad thing at that), but there's no way anyone does crappy editing like that on purpose. If they do, they deserve all my derision.

Um, perhaps because it was a badly shot, poorly edited story of two gay men in love who had the most depressing, dysfunctional relationship in the history of Asian-Gay-Men-Stranded-in-Brazil Cinema. ;)

Not Afraid 06-24-2008 04:15 PM

If you haven't seen Short Bus....see it NOW.

innerSpaceman 06-24-2008 04:19 PM

I want the cool model of NYC.

(And membership to a club like that)

€uroMeinke 06-24-2008 06:50 PM

Another vote for Short Bus, and Pillow Book. I also liked Spetters, but that has a different tone of young-adult sexual coming of age.

I know we had an erotic film thread somewhere, but that might have been in a previous message board - My favorite of the genre include:

Bitter Moon - for creepy seduction and humiliation
Henry & June - Sexual Adventures is pre-war Paris
Dangerous Liaisons - I like just about any retelling of this one for the pure game of sex and seduction
Last Tango in Paris (I've really come to love Bertalucci's treatment of sexual subjects - The Dreamers, Stealing Beauty, Sheltering Sky - I all love but certainly am biased
Repulsion - For some early Polanski repressed sexuality (I also enjoyed Knife in the Water, but didn't like it as much in a second screening).
Eyes Wide Shut - I know people have problems with this
Belle du Jour - Housewife takes a day job as a call girl
Chocolate - Because the next best thing to good sex is chocoalte
The Unbearable Lightness of Being - for certain scenes

Have you ever seen Besieged? It's maybe my favorite of his films, but I think I'm in the minority.
