Twitter
Anyone here playing around with this social networking option? I keep running across it and ask myself if I really need that sort of constant barrage of status messages. And yet, it's popularity and use means I may sign on to better understand how it might be used or abused in the workplace, since keeping up with such things is part of my job duties.
|
I've resisted thus far. I think I'd forget to update it after a few days. Or minutes.
|
Quote:
..I'll see if it works at work. ETA: OK, not blocked, but I don't know if I want to join a site where I have to let people know when I'm reading a mag, eating soup, or wiping my bum.... |
I recently signed up & trying it out.
I'll let you know after a week. |
it's kind of fun, but the IM feature is currently not working, so I can't really keep up with it. I don't have free texting on my cellphone.
|
I've tried it. It's okay. However they have outtages all the time. I think Twiter is something that is on the way down instead of up.
|
Huh?
|
I signed up for work. When I realized it was just a site for posting status updates, I didn't really get it. But I don't (as yet) have a smart phone. So when I sign in to leave a status update, what comes to mind is, "Sitting in front of a computer..." Some people use it to post status updates to their Facebook while they are on the go. Maybe I'll have more fun with it when I have a new phone, but I don't currently understand the appeal other than "Twitter" is a cute word. Heh.
|
Twitter is definitely on the way up. It's seriously a new way of staying in contact. The hype says that people that subscribe to each other's Twitter streams are so up to date on each other's doings that they get to know each other in a whole new way.
I kind of want to check it out but I've been resisting in an "I'm too old for this" fashion. I thought Facebook might fill this niche for me but it hasn't. If this is something I can do from my phone it makes it much more viable for me. To be honest, if others here are even vaguely interested, it bumps my interest up a few notches. |
I'm vaguely interested. But I never update my Facebook or myspace... too many cute apps that just don't ring my bell, float my boat, or tickle my fancy.

I have a few friends who use it and have it echoed to their LJ so I see it.
I have yet to see a single Twitter post where I've said "wow, glad to know that." But then I don't have any desire for people to know what I am doing at every given moment. Nor do I have an active spontaneous social life that would need to be updated on the fly. When I go out for dinner with friends I am not hoping that others will find out and tag along. The site is blocked from work so no work value there (though I'm constantly on the work filtered IM so they have constant immediate access anyway). But then I've never even been to the Facebook web site so I am definitely now in the "too old" school of internet users. Left in a corner mumbling that things were better with telnet, DOS command lines, and gopher was the pinnacle of networking on the internet. |
It feels a bit like stalking, or reading a laundry list journal where the person only writes:
7:00 a.m. I woke up. 7:30 a.m. I am finished getting dressed and now I am eating a bagel. 9:00 a.m. Back at the office. Bah. Traffic was horrible. I too don't have a desire for people to know what I'm up to every hour of the day; I'm sure it would bore. And I lack the desire to know what you're all up to every hour of the day. I suppose it could replace the postcard if one is away on vacation. I keep waiting for the day when most people use Evite for wedding invitations to save some money. But some use Twitter to post humorous 1-line observations, and they can be playful and fun. I don't much like the idea that a friendship between two people can be reduced to 1 sentence. And why bother when you can come to the LoT to carry on an actual conversation, or read a thoughtful blog post with the ability to respond, as if there was a pony express dialog taking place (albeit in "public"). MySpace has become a place I go to find new music. Facebook is something I mostly use for work, though I am having more fun playing around with it than I thought, and long lost acquaintances who didn't find me through MySpace and Friendster have contacted me on Facebook. Mostly it feels like yet another place where everything seems to happen at once but nothing is really happening at all. I do enjoy Text Twirl and Scrabulous, though. Some of the game apps are amusing. |
Quote:
Apparently Evite is considered kind of crude for it but there are several "classier" services available. Experts were split on whether this marked the end of civilized society or not. |
Don't really know what it means but Wil Wheaton (of Star Trek fame) posted this on his blog today:
Quote:
|
Yeah, I don't agree with CP that it's on the way up. I think it was trying to be on the way up, and might've been interesting (if you were a jetsetter or, like mp, went to concerts all the time, etc.) but like Friendster, it doesn't have the technology to keep up with itself.
|
Maybe I am showing my age and curmudgeonliness, but what is the point for a boring old guy like me? I am really not interested in knowing where all of my friends are at every minute of every day. And I guarantee that my life is nowhere near interesting enough for someone to want to know what I am doing right now.
What am I missing? |
I am mostly interested in the tweets done by people on the move - Pop Candy Blogger Whitney Mathison tweets while she is at conventions, etc, so she can say "just bumped into this famous celebrity and they said this interesting thing." Otherwise I am not that interested in it.
|
Quote:
If it saves money to print up a save the date card for people's fridges (if civilized people insist on having something in print) and have the bulk of the info and responses online, I say more money for vacations, etc. Granted, I don't want to get married, so maybe I'm not the best judge. |
I think wedding invitations of the future should just go on people's calendars automatically.
And before you plan the date you can use the software to scan the calendars of your guest list to find the date most people [who you want to attend] are free. You could also set it to find the dates that the people you don't want there but have to invite are busy. |
I am in favor of good ol' fashioned engraved wedding invitations (which you actually don't see much any more). But I am biased.
|
Besides, who needs Twitter when we have the Soooo thread ??

I use Twitter a lot. I get updates on basic things, plus use it to promote my own blog. I know a lot of others that use it for promotions or alerts. Yesterday while in LA I was able to get some information just by asking the cloud a question. Sean Bonner wrote a good post on how he uses Twitter (and it has links to other Twitter based articles) The LA Fire Department uses it to alert of fires, and used it a lot when we had the wildfires. Nano-blogging or Micro-blogging as it has become known as is the way things are heading. While message boards are fun and informative, the on the fly conversations and events seem to be catching on. While it is having its growing pains, I think it will survive. I wrote a post on my blog about it yesterday in fact. The only other one I use regularly is Brightkite Once more GPS enabled phones are out, I think location based social networking (like brightkite) will really take off. It also helps with the geo-tagging of pictures and events. I know a lot of people who are frustrated with Twitter, but also know too many people to try and get everyone on another service. And posting the same updates on multiple services gets really old to those who follow you on multiple services. I have tried others. Each of them has its own purpose. Pownce is good for sharing files and music, but not as good with the text updates. GO!TeamInternet is just too much to set up and doesnt seem fluid to me. Even the new ones like Plurk are bound to run into issues as they get more users. I really don't like the feel of it either. To follow me on any of those, check the link on my site under "Social Networking" |
Quote:
You can chose who you get updates from, and also which of those updates you get to your mobile device, if you so chose. Also it is real easy to turn the mobile updates off/on with an "off" or "on" text message. Twitter would actually be great for Disneyland updates. Create LoT account and update where the group will be, or anounce an impromptu Swanking. The updates can be locked so only those approved can see them. Direct messages can be sent to those who are being followed also. my $0.02 |
I think I need to avoid twitter as I don't trust myself enough to resist the urge to sneak a peak at my phone during a meeting so I don't miss a € one liner.

Considering my recent el jay rant about the inanity of facebook, something tells me twitter isn't for me.
|
I am intrigued by some of the applications Fej lays out. My original inquiry stems from reading an article on Google looking to the phone becoming the most common tool for accessing the internet. Twitter seems uniquely designed for "phone browsing" though both MySpace and Facebook have greatly improved their mobile interfaces.
I'm still at odds about the willfull loss of privacy - and wonder when the google earth integration and cell phone GPS will let you see your friends moving about a virtual globe in real time. I haven't check out all the links yet, but it seems that's already in the works. Perhaps I'm also attracted by the fact that I've started and ditched a half dozen blog entries in the last week and like the idea of distilling things into a series of real-time one-liners. Of course, we all know some people's writting is more compelling than others, and my self consciousness might prevent me from keying in 140 characters that seem dull - I have a facade to maintain afterall. Anyway, still on the fence, but maybe when I get my new cell phone I'll add this to my list of applications. |

My Space, Facebook, Twitter - all of these things seem like work to me. Homework, even. And my phone? I mostly want to use it to actually call people. (I am looking forward to getting a G3 iPhone, which will be a big leap for me. My current model has zero bells and whistles. Maybe that will change my current attitude.) Anyway, as soon as someone mentioned "constantly updating," I knew Twitter was not my bag.

As long as I've got more meaningful ways to connect with friends on the net, these so-called social networking panaceas will be meaningness drudgery to me. And I don't see the phone becoming the gateway to the internet for me either. I don't have much of an appetite for the net when I'm on-the-go, and I wouldn't much care to carry around a device large enough to have a screen suitable for that purpose. In a beautiful web coincidence, I got a 502 server error. |

I love twitter! Since I don't have an unlimited txting plan on my phone I just use the mobile browser interface to view and post tweets. Different people use it in different ways and it's interesting to be able to hear about what my friends are doing- especially those in other states. I've learned of rad bars and places I want to check out when I visit the cities where my non-Vegas friends live. It's also nice to be able to update my Facebook status on a whim. Now if only MySpace would allow Twitter to update my status as well... I can dream!
http://twitter.com/keithsuperk |
Like SuperK said, if you have the web on your phone there's no need to use texts, which is good news. Already I think I'll use it...whether anyone will deem my messages interesting is up for debate.
Do I really have to call them "tweets"?? |
Doesn't using your phone to access the web cost way more than texting on a non-web phone???

Depends what kind of phone you have.
My BB with data and texting costs less then my regular phone with texting. |
We happen to have both unlimited web and text access.

So my unlimited texting costs $5/month. What does web access cost??

I think we're paying $15/month for unlimited data.

Grrrr.
I can't access twitter from Wachovia cause it's 'adult content'. Takes too long to load on my razr v3i. Maybe I will get an iPhone. |
Depends on the provider.
My basic phone service is $39.99 a month. I pay $19.99 a month for unlimited texting and data. But remember, I have a Blackberry. I think PDA phones have different data rates then regular phones. |
And....my phone is dead. :) Guess I'll have to charge it more often...

I guess I feel I am too busy doing boring unintersting work stuff to have time to post about doing boring uninteresting work stuff.

So one day in and I get tweets about a theme park decapitation well before it hits the normal media - I guess I'm sold on this one.

In looking into it I found out that someone I wish I interacted more frequently with, even if it is just this, is on there. So I've joined just so I can interact there. Time will tell if I actually use it regularly for myself. If I do, it will probably be becasue LJ, my normal outlet, is blocked at work.

Here is my two cents on the twitter matter:
My better half uses it to keep up with his contact at SND (society of newspaper design). He also used it to update these contacts (friends) during the WB repo cruise. You can do a private post to only your fiends. Its like a public blob, but you can make it private. I'm just getting into posting and LoT is my first and will stay my first and only. Hope this helps. |
I scummed to peer pressure. DucksChickie. No idea if I'll update it on a regular basis. I suppose it wouldn't be much harder to update them MySpace and Facebook. Since I think Twitter would update Facebook. I should look into that.

I already find it annoying to get updated on my phone through SMS.
Will stick to checking the site via mobile web. |

But nothing is going on except that I'm stuck at work or sitting at home. Perfect for random and general topics such as are found here on the LoT.
But not good for twitter updates. I'm still sitting here at work? I'm posting on the LoT? What kind of boring sh!t is that? No, I'm afraid the only fun stuff I could twitter about would be when I'm on the go. I guess I could add internet to my mobile device, but ... and please get out your violins now ... When they first came back up, i had all my followees still faithful. It was only after i read about the troubles in this thread that most of them went astray.
I blame the LoT. |
I noticed that I am blocked out due to too many tweets a lot of the time.
No observation other than that. I will go back in and check at some point. |
Interesting - a few of my followers show up on the list. Not all, not none, but a few.
|
Yeah, and, well ... with how dreary most of my tweets have been this horrible week for me, I suspect a fair number of people will not re-enlist to follow me.
Sigh. What does the U.S. Military do about this problem?? |
To test, I posted a Tweet for €uroMeinke (he used to follow me, but doesn't show as following me now). Let's see what happens.
|
I am getting twits from some of the people I follow even though they don't appear on my home page list. But they do not, in return, get tweets for me.
At least not with the one person I've tested with. |
My homepage says I'm following one person (who I added on Saturday), but since midnight, I have gotten tweets from LSPE, GeminiCricket, €uro, Kevy, CP, FEJ... and a couple of others.

Um, if the LoT were this buggy, we'd be out of business in a week.

Earlier, I posted a test Tweet and asked Chris to respond. He has posted two tweets since then, but has not responded to me. However, MousePod (who is not currently listed as following me) DID see the test. KatieSue also saw the post, but she is listed as a follower. |
I've been wondering what the deal was with Twitter. Hmmm... Not planning to sign up. We'll see, but no plans. The advantage here is that it can be just text, right? That's more appealing than the myspace app things which annoy me.
|
On the plus side, the mysterious spammer that I had blocked but still showed up on my follower page is gone.
|
Now I have 6 pictures but it shows I am following/followed by 9 people.
|
I started to re-add everyone... then I realized I was simply to lazy to go on with it. :) I'll wait until its fixed more before I take that kind of time out of my day off... hehe..
|
Ok, I'm getting updates from people who's pictures don't show as my followees. Just to be on the safe and pain-in-the-butt side, I re-added everyone who's pictures don't show. Sorry if this causes any inconvenience ... tho i guess it shouldn't.

Ironically, if that was their plan, they've even failed at that. The one spammer that I had blocked but was still showing up in my Followers is indeed gone...only to be replaced by another one.

Fixed for me, too. But I don't feel like tweeting today. It may, as my early-morning tweet says, be my first drama-free day in a long while, but I'm so sad from yesterday and I want to wait till my tweets can be more upbeat.

Looks like it's fixed.

Are their twitters juicier than ours? Do they post about themselves the same things the press does? Ya know, adultery, wife beatings, breakups, nude bathing??? |
I don't normally follow celebrity anything but I do confess I have bookmarked Bai Ling's blog.

Twitters are just like blogs - there are some on all fronts.
|
Yeah, we're starting to do Twitter feeds for some of our movies now. (That was why I got on Twitter originally.)
I follow Pop Candy blogger Whitney Matheson, for her real-time convention/etc updates. I also follow LAUpdates for info on what's happening around town. |
Since Twitter is only of use to me by text message (it is blocked at work) I need to keep the volume down or I'll start missing actual important text messages and phone calls.
All I ask of any data stream is that the contents are of interest to me. When limited to 140 characters, the realm of potentially interesting stuff is drastically reduced. Almost to the point that the only reason it is interesting is because of who is saying it, not because of what is said. There are exceptions (a prominent film critic twittering first reactions while exiting each screening would be interesting to me independent of the exact person involved) but a Barack Obama press aide twittering as Obama isn't one of them. Nor is a fictional character. |

The Earthquake made Twitter a hero. Evac'd the building everyone on their cell phones - Disaster recovery people running around trying to get ahold on things - and here I stand, cell phone in hand - refreshing and reporting my Tweets:
Looks like it was felt in Santa Monica... Brea... Long Beach... Preliminary estimates 5.8 Chino Hills... All MY loved ones are safe... It was that awesome joy of childish one-upmansship. What's that - oh I'm using twitter - but it's blocked by our company as a "dating" site - dating and disaster recovery Heh I was giddy for hours even if dissappointed that we didn't hit the 6 mark |
The earthquake has finally brought me over to the darkside....my ID is swanies.

i really want to twitter on the go. my current cell provider won't let me text to twitter. i'm on the verge of sucking up the more expensive plans and getting an iPhone. i played with one last night. they are nifty, alright.
BUT ... they are too darned big. i want my portable devices to be small, literally pocketsize. i have enjoyed the last decade of my cell phone getting smaller and smaller ... and i'm not yet willing to start moving in the other direction just for incremental increases in functionality (oooh, i can check the LoT and post on twitter while i'm out in the world having fun!) Sorry, not yet. Anyone know of a SMALL web-access phone device?? |
Blackberry Pearl.
Verizon has a bunch of phones with web access about the size of the Pearl as well. |
The BB Pearl is 4.2" x 2" x 0.57" (but no QWERT keyboard)
The iPhone is 4.5" x 2.4" x 0.48" Not much of a size difference. |

Among the fictional twitterers I'm following are: Sockington, a cat (I called him/her Socks earlier by mistake,) Stephen Colbert, Dr. Horrible, Barack Obama, and Alex.
The only one following me is Barack Obama. Wait! I think I hear his footsteps behind me now! |
Am i cheating if i tweet 4 times in a row?
|
I threw in the towel on Twitter the other day. An interesting experiment but ultimately unsatisfying.
I guess the account is active so if I'm kidnapped int he woods I'll be able to let people know but I'm not getting them anymore. The noise to signal ratio was atrocious and since a fair number of people don't use the @ I couldn't filter out the significant portion that were me just seeing one side of a conversation. |
I'm enjoying posting into the ether and seeing if anything comes back. Most of the people I'm following are following each other, so, even if @ gets dropped, I can usually follow the connection. Once in a while I enjoy a good non-sequiter.
Oh look, a penguin! |
I've severely cut back on my twittering frequency but still enjoy checking in on occasion and throwing the odd post in.
|
Within the circle I was in, I had two glaring omissions in who I had no interest in following but most others did.
Plus, since the text messaging function is the only way the service was of use to me (no access by web at work) with following just 10 people I was getting more than 100 text messages a day and so even vibration was annoying which made me turn off my ringer completely meaning I wouldn't know when I was getting actual calls or text messages of value. |
I have only a few of my followees set to alert me, otherwise the damn phone would be constantly going off. That way, when I do check in, 10 or so msgs have stacked up and I can read 'em all in one fell swoop. I guess this wouldn't work if your phone doesn't have internet, though. I also don't receive alerts between midnight and 9 AM.
|
my biggest block to twitter is i can't twitter on the go. i have no mobile 'net connection, and my current cell plan won't even let me text to twitter.
I'd really like to get some friends tweeting who i don't see enough of in real life, and who i don't message board with anymore. It would be a good way to maintain some connection. Right now, most of the people i follow or who follow me are from here, the LoT ... and we have, well, the LoT. So i appreciate my 3 las vegas friends on twitter who don't post on the LoT (well 2 are technically members, but they hardly ever post here). And i'd like to convince some of my other non-LoT friends to join twitter. I love the haiku aspect of the character limit. Even though i posted 4 tweets in a row a little while ago, they were each on a different subject. But i wouldn't have to play catch-up like that if i could just tweet in real time like everyone else. But i'm not sure that twitter is enough reason for me to go to the expense of getting a device and plan with mobile internet access. Yes, i still have a plain old cell phone. How 2006 of me! |
If I had a phone like Alex or iSm I'm sure I wouldn't enjoy twitter either.
Twitter has definitely fit a very specific niche for me. I only tweet selectively, when I have something interesting to say that fits the 160 char lim style. If I have something major I'll say it elsewhere, I don't respond to tweets very much at all, and I don't follow everyone. I cut back a bit and may cut more. Doesn't mean I don't care for the people involved, just means I can't keep up. |
I forget about it most of the time. Then I'll tweet like crazy and then forget about it again.
|
I don't have a smart phone either - and I've only managed to log into mobile Twitter once. So for me it's not so much the on-the-go following of friends. I don't get any updates via phone - though I do tweet via text if there's something interesting going on, particuarly if I'm out and about doing things that are unusual. I like seeing people's habits and patterns, and unlike LoT, if there's something urgent or upsetting or very cool going on in someone's life, it's gathered in the one spot (unlike here where I have to make it through all of the appropriate threads before I know all the big news. Which I don't mind doing, but don't always have time for.)

I'm a little weirded out. |
For some reason, I decided to look at what EVERYONE on Twitter is posting (click the "Everyone" link on your Twitter Home Page).
A post came up from a user with the name "UnWantedChild." Seems someone has written a program/script that will post a series of rotating messages ever couple of minutes or so: Quote:
|
Stab in the dark: It's probably tied to an anti-abortion campaign or person.
|
Oh, I guessed similar. But what is the point? It is the same five Tweets repeated over and over.
Why are people following this person? Do they really need to see those Tweets over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over? |
I'm not sure how highlighting the abandonment of unwanted children would be anti-abortion.
Those are usually hypotheticals of the pro-choice side. My guess, and it is based on absolutely nothing, is that someone did something similar for a fetus being aborted (maybe this one found with a guess at a user name) and this is a response to that. |
I'm thinking it's related to safe haven abandonment laws where you can leave a newborn (or is it up to 3 days old) at a hospital, police station or fire station with no repercussions. And maybe anti-prop 4 (I think) that requires parental notification for minors to have an abortion.
In other news, don't accept a friend request from bin Laden. Twitter can be used for terrorist activities. |
Quote:
But your assumption is correct: the safe haven laws allow up to three days after birth to drop off with no repercussions to the mother (at least in California - I don't know the laws in other states). While researching this detail, I ran across some interesting facts from the State of California on the Safe Haven law: Quote:
|
Nebraska hurriedly trying to revise their safe haven law so parents will stop dropping off their teenagers, including one from out of state. I'm not kidding, really I'm not.
(Apropos of not much, just an interesting tidbit on unintended consequences I heard about over the weekend.) |
Quote:
|
The CA law seems reasonable. I feel bad for the kids that have been dumped under the Nebraska law. Newborns are one thing, but teens????? One guy dropped off 5. ??? Dude. Stop having babies. Better yet, don't start.

|
Not that it makes it okay, but if I remember correctly, the guy with 9 children dropped off either 6 or 7 of them. His wife had just died and he felt completely overwhelmed. Within a few days, he returned to reclaim his children.
|
Did that kid get voted off the island? Was he hogging the rice or just slacking around camp?
|
Quote:
|
I can't find any story on them being reclaimed (not that it didn't happen). Though I did find a story of another out of state kid (a girl from Iowa) being reclaimed.

About them being dropped off
Apparently they were taken in by an aunt, not the father. It was a big brooha around here, maybe they thought lots of KS parents would be heading over the state line. |

I loathe MySpace, love Facebook- and do not understand Twitter.
|
Twitter is just basicallly Facebook status updates that can be sent to you on the go (or not, if you so choose.) I use it more than Facebook because I have lots of work clients on my Facebook and I don't wish them to know as much about my personal life (or, say, when I'm taking a lunch break instead of "in a business meeting.")
|
Yeah Facebook is too public.
The few times I've posted an eyebrow-raising status, I've gotten flooded with email. I was going to link Facebook and Twitter, but decided against it. I hardly ever update my Facebook status now. Lately, I've been far too busy to tweet. My life is rapid, interesting, and commentable, but I can't. Ironic. |
Yeah, when I realized that I was easy enough to find on Facebook that my Mom possesses the technical skill to find me, I realized I would not be jumping on the "link everything into Facebook" bandwagon. I know I could do some things with privacy settings, but I don't want to spend my time micromanaging it like that. Instead, I just have a simple rule about the kind of info I put on Facebook - it's the same level of personal info that I'd be comfortable sharing at a party where the people on my friends list are guests. Anything beyond that I either don't put on the internet, or only post in place where I can be more selective about who's around.
The simple fact that Facebook is linked to my real name is enough to make me cautious about it. |
I spent the time (cause I have it) to lock down my Facebook pretty well. Those who are on it now can like what I say or remove themselves. My former co-workers are only those who knew me well enough before to know how I am in real life, vs. corporate world.
I have two Twitter accounts, one for the majority of my friends and one for a sub-sect. I doubt most of you guys would love hearing about all my hockey stuff... though it's going pretty good now hehe. Trade deadline is today; things will slow down soon. |
Geez, I can hardly maintain my Facebook and MySpace pages. In fact, both are sadly neglected. Linked In? I don't even remember how to log in. My LJ has been abandoned entirely. I can't even imagine starting with Twitter.
Two days ago I was distressed to have been tracked down on Facebook by someone from the dark past, who should not have even known the name I use there. I know I don't have to confirm the request, but the personal message begs a response of some kind. |
I went ahead and linked Twitter with FB. Like everyone, I got cautious when I started friending more distant acquaintances. So I disconnected the Twitter updates. 2 days later, I was too annoyed by not having it cross posting that I decided it's easier just to be careful what I say on Twitter or start private stuff with an @something so it doesn't cross post. So I reconnected the updates.
The nice thing is, Twitter pulls up easier on my phone (I use the web app on my phone, rather than the text app), so I can update FB quickly and easily. I enjoy the fact that on FB you can get responses. |
I'm so much of a luddite, I rarely change status on Twitter as I find it cumbersome on the web and my phone is not on often enough to update. I'm a textOphobe, I would need a new phone to text like a normal human being. iPhone is what I want, but not in the budget right now. So for now Facebook works and I've reconnected with some great people from my past, so it's been useful. LinkdIn has not done much for me, if I end up being axed in a layoff, it might be useful then since most of my contacts there are business variety.
|
I've become quite the fan of Oversoul. No more tedious typing because with the painless insertion of sub-cranial implants, I can hear what everyone in my network is thinking as soon as they think it.
As to Facebook, I think I've got it pretty well locked down, and I have no plans to post anything particularly personal. |
No Facebook
No Live Journal No My Space No Oversoul Don't update Twitter that often Just the trusty ol' LoT. If it isn't posted here, I pretty much don't know it is happening. |
I think it's broken again :(
|
I've been a bit cautious with Facebook, though I like the format. I like that I can actually find replies. I'm not entirely too sure that I like it being linked to my real name, and so far I haven't said too much to cause waves. That may change, though several people I've linked to there are... shall we say, not used to me lately? They've seen only the reasonably safe side.
Twitter... safe, got a lot of you on it, but I don't like the format at all. Myspace- loathe it. I log in once in a while but I don't stay. I made a go of it but I don't like it. Live journal... gets updated. Generally pretty safe and I like it. Tend to post random ramblings here; anything juicy is likely to go here first. Then to Facebook, most likely, or LoT. |
Okay, I've had a FB account for 2 years and never did anything with it. Today I moved into the latter half of the decade. If anyone wants to find me, my last name is Withers.
|
Quote:
|
The iphone has definitely made a difference in which apps I use and how I use them. Twitter & BiteKite rank 1st. I'll read Facebook & MySpace feeds, but usually won't do anything beyond change a status. Live Journal has suffered the most without a quality text editor that can cut and paste - I may need to get a netbook for that.

Weird: the most recent post on Twitter that I can see (via Twitter.com/home) is one from four hours ago made by StanfordSteph about not rinsing all the soap out of her coffee carafe.
The post itself isn't weird, it is the fact that either 1) none of the people I am following have Tweeted in the last four hours (highly unlikely - you are a effusive bunch), or 2) Twitter is broken. |
I'm a twitter failure. I only noticed yesterday that 18 people have reqeusted to follow my tweets, some of them over a month ago. Ooops. Well, they're going to be awful disappointed. I hardly tweet anymore.
That may change once i finally break down and buy an iPhone when the new version comes out. But I think it will take more than that. I'll have to change behaviors from someone who just flows with what's happening to someone who pauses now and then to tweet about what's happening. I've already noticed how much of a behavior modificiation it's going to take now that I finally have a camera again to become the person who pauses the flow of things that are photo-worthy to actually take those photos. It's a big and annoying step for me, and I don't know if I'll succeed. So the camera may prove to be a waste. And the cell-bill-doubling iPhone as well. I'm a walking anachronism of hasbeenhood. |

(well new to me anyways..... ) Instant movie buzz. Bruno bites, Beth Cooper seems to appeal to woman more than men etc... |
*Grrrrrrr*
OK, I give up. I've been trying to keep my profile open assuming that only people that somehow know me would care to follow me. Obviously that is not the case. Pretty much daily I'm forced to block yet another twit on twitter. I actually spent some time trying to figure out how they were finding me. After all, I'm not what you would call a high profile twitter user. My first thought was that they were just grabbing all the names from one or more of the high profile people I was following. That is obviously part of it. After following a couple of professional poker players (the World Series of Poker is happening now) I was followed by a number of poker/gaming/gambling related twits. However others seem to come literally out of the blue. Looking at who they were following/followed by showed no clear connection. Then last night I sent a tweet that mentioned "Super Soakers". This morning I find two new followers who, shocker, sell super soakers online. Wow. It makes me wonder what would happen it I sent a tweet with the word 'Viagra' in it....... Anyway I'm tired of the constant fight to ban these twits. So I'm going to change my profile to locked. I'm not sure that effect that will have on anyone that is already following me. |
Viagra Update:
Ok, so I sent a Twit with the word "Viaga" in it at 10:00am. 10:01 - First new follower. |

11:00 - Still just the one new follower. I'm kinda disappointed.....
|
Twitter is great for finding out about travel deals before they hit elsewhere. Typically you get first crack. JetBlue has a new ID JetBlueCheeps just for super cheap fares, some as low as $9 oneway.

Yeah, as a blocked profile I still get 1-2 follower requests per week. Usually t!tty girls (I assume... I refuse to click on their profiles, but their avatars usually involve cleavage)
|
Funny, I don't get many spam ollower requests. It's been months since my last. Perhaps because I don't tweet about brand names or something?
|
Aren't your tweets private?
|
Also funny, I have been followed by exactly zero new twits since I sent the "Viagra" tweet. Even the one twit that followed me one min later removed themselves.
I might be on to something here... :D |
Mine are and I still get one or two spam followers a month.
My current issue with Twitter is the people I really do want to follow but that also about half their tweets are just retweets. Once in a while is fine to alert me to someone I might want to follow but after that I grow annoyed. Does anybody know if a tool that filters out retweets? I do have a second account that is public and it is amazing how any tweet seems to draw a half dozen marketing twitter account followings. Mentioned Providence once and got three different Providence night clubs following me. |

Speaking of which - I went private so I can be absolutely sure that I can be honest and real without compromising my job and family relations. But I do feel like I'm missing out on the very public side of it. My hashtags are pointless. If I'm following someone and they aren't following me (celebrities) I can't respond to them. If people are searching for info on something, I'm of no help. And now there are possibilities like this one. Sigh. Unless Twitter adopts a per-message privacy setting, I just won't be able to participate in the next step of net evolution. |
Open two accounts and use one for public activities and one for more private with a select list of people allowed to read. A hassle, sure (my phone twitter app handles multiple accounts pretty well since it can keep multiple instances open at the same time) but would allow you a venue for saying "Head Librarian Bob Jones can go blow himself" as well as "Oh, @Wil, you're so dreamy and geeky!"

Perhaps a good app would make me feel better about it. Next phone, perhaps. |

As for the pain in the butt of separating your speaking between two accounts that certainly is a hurdle (though some good apps will make it much easier). I would like it if Twitter added some level of finesses privacy control, and it should be relatively simple. Perhaps just if you are set public you can limit to followers only by starting your tweet with @f and if you are followers only you can display a tweet public with @p. |

It need not. Twitter would just have to not count "@p" towards the 140 character limit and then filter it out from what it shows when posted. 140 is not the hard technological limit for SMS message lenght, 160 is.
But any individual tweet privacy setting would have to be included in the tweet or exclude use by SMS users. |

I'm debating the merits of re-disconnecting fb from my tweet feed. I have so many people on facebook now, that it's causing me to self censor (for example, because large amounts of family and business friends of my dad's from my childhood are friended on fb, I don't feel free to tweet about my dad's health, lest it set off a panic storm).
Having them connected is REALLY convenient, especially since I like the feedback that facebook allows for, but in the absence of a per-tweet censor, I'm starting to think I need to limit my tweets to just you guys. Haven't decided for sure yet... |
I believe there's an app that lets you tag your tweets with #fb for the ones you want to post to your Facebook page. Otherwise, they don't.
|
I use BriteKite which has post level privacy settings, alas the private one's stay only in the BriteKite world were access can be managed, but my public posts there, go to Twitter (which I keep private), and then to Facebook, where you can manage access again. At the moment Facebook is purely personal for me and I use LinkedIn to do any professional social networking.
So far the only "strangers" that have friended me on BriteKite have been real people, who commented on pictures, or were in proximity, so I've been fine with that |
I apparently need to explore britekite better. I've only really used it to post photos.

All the solutions on per-post privacy are going to be pretty much equally complex, you're just shifting around who's doing the work and how universal the result will be. |
The British Government has released a document advising civil servants about using Twitter (you know: the service with a 140 character limit). That document is 20 pages; more than 5,000 words.
|
You're the second person I've seen point to that article.
I guess I'm not seeing the irony that others apparently find in that. Twitter's own help page is several hundred times longer than the character limit of a single tweet and that's just for the overview page. |
Anyone here claim to be "min3d?"
|
Anyone here claim to be "kimbeekai?"
|
That'd be me. I forget that we haven't met in person, so you must not recognize my pic.
|
I'm still trying to figure who "min3d" is

Which would be a first for you. |
Any suggestions for a Twitter client for the iPhone? Twitterific V2 has become problematic (lots of problems being reported today) and V3 is too limited (no multiple account support unless you pay).
I am going to try, of all things, Twitter's own client. We'll see how that goes. Which client do you use? |
I like Tweetie a lot. Never had a problem with it. I dig that it shows your own tweets in green, and any replies to your tweets in blue - an easy visual cue.
Sigh, and don't know why, but I barely tweet any more. I hope that changes. |
Be aware that Twitter is about to make a major change to how clients have to communicate with the server. They've given lots of warning, so most major clients have already switched over to the new way, but if you haven't updated your client in a long time, it might break soon.
|
I use Seesmic. Not sure if it's available for the iPhone.
|
UberTwitter is freakin' awesome for Blackberry.
Too bad I lost mine. :( |

Tried to find Tweetie last night through iTunes, but I could not find. I am having Susan check for Seesmic and UberTwitter. |

So of course, just like clockwork, Tweetie stops working today - and it's no longer findable at the App Store. I'd never heard of this twitter client problem before reading this thread today, so forgive me if I blame this thread for the whole thing - because I know this wouldn't have happened it I hadn't become aware of it.
Anyway, I guess I'm in the market, so let me go back and read other people's suggestions. Bah. |
I use Echofon (the free version). It cloud-syncs with your iPhone, so when you leave your desktop and move to your iPhone, you don't have hours of tweets to re-read. It also supports location, url-shortening, pics, etc.
|
Hmmm, i may try that - even though i've just been informed that Tweetie now goes by the strange and confusing name "Twitter" - but should have triggered an update reminder on my phone just like all the other apps do - - - 17 times per week!
|
I just use the twitter app. I don't like the ads on Echophone.
|
Beware the Rainbow tweet.
|
What about the double rainbow tweet?
|
What about the Triple Dog Dare?!?
|
Is there any truth to the Twitter Virus rumor I've been hearing today? (I won't log on to Twitter because of it.) Purportedly, you can be "infected" simply by mousing over the virus link in some retweets. Is that kind of thing even possible?
|
It's been patched.
|
That is what Moonie linked to above
