Comic-Con 2008
Hard to imagine that it's already here. I plan on attending Saturday. Anyone else going this year?
|
Working the whole thing. Hubby is a GOH this year. I get tired just thinking about it...
We will have a booth. I'll post the number later this week. |
I really wanted to go with our Bornieo, but it's not possible at the moment. I know Bornieo's going for sure.
:) |
Can someone please report back on what the Octagon Global Recruiting commercial was about?
|
one thing you might just wanna keep in mind peeps....
Comic Con 2008...going......going...... iffin ya lag, youre gonna be left out |
^^ true dat, although I've never actually paid to get in IIRC. Not so much being a creator's wife, as that's fairly recent, but I used to go the volunteer route. Before that...well we snuck in. Ssshhh. It was a very long time ago.
Anyway, don't forget you can volunteer. One year I hung out with RA Salvatore being his gofer as my "entrance fee." It was entirely pleasant. |
I have so many friends who go annually, but I've never been. And I don't think I ever will.
It's become too big and too corporate. It would be kinda like attending Burning Man now, a decade after it's slid into a pale shadow of its former. |
Burning Man went corporate?! From what I understand it's still as awesome as ever, if not more so due to insane size. [/tangent]
|
I was actually considering going this year... just for a day. Can't believe the weekend is already sold out. Oh well...
|
I'll be there the whole time. I"m still a "Pro" so I get comp'ed in. I might have an extra pass if the first person offered turns it down. PM me if interested.
ISM is right about the throng of corp. I really was considering only going a couple days this year, but there are alot of programing I wanna see. |
Say Hi to Richard Elfman!
|
I actually wanted to go this year. I don't think it's gonna happen.
|
Friday and Saturday is sold out, but I'm told Thursday is actually more fun ... because it's not insanely crowded.
AND ... this is the first time in years and years ComiCon doesn't conflict with Disneyland Birthday. BUT ... it would mean getting a third Thursday in a row off work. And, sigh, that ain't gonna happen. |
I briefly contemplated going just to attend the Night of the Living Dead re-union, but I guess it wasn't that important to me because I made no effort at all. I would like to go one year, though, just to hang out and check out all the people.

Remember when THE place to stay was the U.S. Grant? Remember when the film programming was 16mm? Remember the time we met Theodore Sturgeon, George Clayton Johnson and Harlan Ellison in the lobby of the Hotel San Diego? Remember when someone stole Jack Kirby's Eisner Award, and Harlan bitched everyone out over the intercom? Remember the time we all slept in the hospitality suite? Or when Patrick drank himself under the bed by 9:00 pm? I once slept on folding chairs in the screening room, lulled to sleep by Invaders From Mars. And what about Peter Goff and Vale Lord in elf suits? Or the haunted floor at the El Cortez? It's way too big now. |
With all you comics fans out there, I'm hoping somebody can tell me if Rex Morgan ever found the wrestling mats.
|
I'd be interested to go... some time. Can't this year, work and all.
|
Anyone know the connection between the Star Trek {premier?} night at the Aerospace Museum and the Comic Con?
|
Haven't heard about the Star Trek thing. I'm sure its to drum up business while all the geeks are in town.
|
LOL Hey, the geeks who live here resemble that remark!
thanks for that info, yeah, I guess that is seperate completely. |
Someone is trying to talk me into going

Too much.
|
A movie studio comped me and a friend. See you there.
|
I couldn't believe CC sold out completely so soon. I went a few years ago and you could buy tickets at the door. Not anymore! But from what I gather they've tried to limit the amount of people. There are a few things I want to see if I can get in but it's just sort of a fun day.
I'll be there Saturday. I'm taking the train down too! |
I'm heading down in the AM. Have a good time everyone!!!!
|
The trucks are packed...the sleep deficit has been acknowledged and ignored...the RSVPs for parties have been sent (Shhhh...: I don't want to go!). Okay...better head to bed to get some sleep as we're due up at 5. :( Soon enough, we'll be back as just fans and will have some fun, but this year it's work. I will straighten my shoulders, take a deep breath...and...San Diego, HO! See you all on the other side.
Oh and duh: our booth is 4403, in the Illustrator's Island. If you stop by and pat me on the head it will help. :) |
I'll stop by and say hi.
Parties? <<Sigh>> I miss the good ones back when Marvel paid the booze tab. Oh well... |
Ack! I just read this article. A 24 panel? Sing along "Once More... With Feeling?" Not to mention the Lost panel and the Octagon Recruiting thing.
/me dies from sadness at missing all the coolness |
I definitely do not have enough cred to show up at ComicCon. Hope all of my geek-cousins have fun! :)
Yes, I just coined that new term. Like it? |

Bolt is a Walt Disney Pictures movie. |
I am hoping to be there Thursday.
It depends upon how my dental work goes today. If my face is swollen or if I am gauzed up and yucky, I am going to pass. Darn it, too because I was looking forward to being responsibly productive and spending time with whomever I could as well as I had planned on walking over with the kids for lunch at Seaport. Well, you never know. I might be peachy keen tomorrow. |
I'll be there on Saturday. My first ComicCon (though I've done WonderCon several times since moving west).
My two greatest con experiences: - Meeting (and getting autographs from) Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster and Bob Kane at a convention my dad took me to in Philadelphia when I was ten years old. - Meeting my favorite illustrator the following year at the 1977 Phil Seuling Convention in New York (again, with my Dad). He had drawn the cover for the convention program (his Swamp Thing character), and I bought a copy of the catalog for his exhibition that year. (I hear he'll be at this years Con ;)) |

in any case, I'll be around. hope to see you all there :argghh: |
I will be there tomorrow (Thursday). Heading down early. It will be pretty cool. I haven't been in a couple years.
Looking forward to the Dexter panel. |
I want to go, but I can't.
ENVY! |
I will be there Saturday. Hoping to catch the Battlestar, Dollhouse and Pineapple Express presentations. I'll be happy for any one of those!
|
OMG, just heard that the full MST3K/Cinematic Titanic crew are doing a panel! Now I do (almost) wish I could go. :)

Oh and everything has gone swimmingly since we arrived! Opening up in just a couple of hours...and I'm already tired, but this year has a nice vibe going...woooo! |

So, con was 1/4 nightmare and 3/4 fun. Too many people and too many things that have nothing to do with comics and that sucks big time.
The train ride down was a pain because someone got hit on the tracks and we had to wait 2 hours in Chatsworth. The hotel - Holiday Inn had a nice view of the bay, though the bus to Con was always packed and always took forever to show up. We had one driver that must've been a racer in his day because he was flying around corners. That was a good ride. The con was 25% comics and the rest was crap. Getting thru and isle where any movie studio or Star Wars was based was impossible. Preview night was a major disaster as thousands of attendies were packed in the walkway in front of the con with no visable lines. The professional registration was hidden behind the attendee crowd and the "line" for Media and no visible signage. Once I found the "line" and got my badge it went smooth but you would think that a sold out convention would have some sort of order. I got a bunch of cool stuf and saw some celebs. Mostly I did the fanboy thing and got to meet some of the "old timers" like Mike Grell, Joe Staton and saw an AMAZING BBC documentary on Spiderman creator - Steve Ditko that was rock solid. In the "Fanboy" catagory I did very well. Professionally, it was hit/miss. Some neat stuff might happen in the next year but we'll see. Had a great time, but really wish this was a comic convention again. It's tragic. I suspect I will go next year but I am considering only a day or two and put my money towards a real comic-con in New York or up north. Saw Ponine, Mousepod, Capt Jack and Lizzy! Capt Jack has a pic that I hope he posts! |
I was reading a story in today's LA Times lamenting how the Con is becoming less about the comics and more about Hollywood. Your post seems to confirm that.
|
OH! ALso, I got the new Al Jaffee book "Tall Tales" which reprints his newspaper strips from the 50's and 60's. A total LOL throughout. Plus I got it autographed by the man himself. wow!

Whew! We are still recovering, but had a great time this year. It was an unusual con experience for us: we almost never left the table, and we really were not interested in the party scene this year (the Weta/Lucasfilm/Dark Horse/Gentle Giant bash was just awful -- overrun by obnoxious industry 20-somethings with cell phones glued to their hands -- we only stayed about 20 minutes).
Being stuck at the table allowed us to people-watch (the steampunk ghostbusters!) and chat with visitors (Fej, Captain Jack, Ponine, Bornieo, mousepod -- hope I didn't forget anyone) in a pretty relaxed way. We made enough to pay off our credit cards (wooo!), and were able to set up some potential gigs for hubby. It was crazy-crowded, but it can't get any worse now as they've hit the attendance ceiling. We liked being set up near one of the front doors -- I imagine if we'd been back in Artist's Alley we'd have been quite miserable. We had a few small complaints (hubby was not really treated like a GoH, the studios have practically driven comics out of the show, blah, blah, blah) but none of that was a surprise since we've been attending regularly for so many years and pretty much knew what to expect. Only one thing left me nonplussed: those weird, persistent lines for things. "Con exclusives?" Huh? I don't get it. I was hoping one of the Disney folk would start a line to nowhere near them... |
One of my favorite local kid's artists - Dan Goodsell, had a "con exclusive" - a plush Mr. Toast Vampire - complete with fangs and cape!
|
By "had" I assume you mean he no longer has it because you now have it?
|
Well, "had" as in "was for sale at the convention, which is now over."
And yes, I have one. |
Here are the Vampire Mr. Toasts:
![]() ... and why didn't Playboy include the Disney princesses in their "Girls of Comic Con"? (a Flickr search shows several snapshots of 'em) |
Those are cute toasts!
I guess I meant I didn't understand waiting in line for stuff because it'll be for sale all over the internet right after con (in my experience) and standing in lines=missing neat events/panels/hitting other booths :D , etc. But that's just me!:) |

kudos to sketchguy for the shot I cant begin tell you how thrilled I was to meet you guys, let alone how stunned I was to meet the artist for one of the most iconic comic characters in my early life, Captain Stern (theres a whole story behind that, that...well, I just cant go into without, frankly....wayyyy TMI) who knew? :snap: :snap: |
Awwww! Thanks for posting that! :D I hope I remembered to give you the little Sternn flyer-poster-promo-thingy...
|
So now we know what lizziebeth looks like. Who knew she was a ten-year-old boy in a blue shirt.
