YouTubery Annex: Retro Music Videos

Music videos from the 80's and 90's and beyond.
The good, the bad and the downright crappy...

Here are a couple of funny ones:

Trouble - Nia Peeples
Ms. Peeples thinks she's Janet.

Fascinated - Company B
What's with the wigs?!

I Wanna Love You Tender - Armi & Danny
Worst Video Ever! Put on your red pants and dance along!

Got any to add?
:D

CoasterMatt 07-20-2008 11:42 PM

Europe - The Final Countdown

CoasterMatt 07-20-2008 11:46 PM

Krokus - School's Out

Gemini Cricket 07-20-2008 11:50 PM

Rock Me Amadeus - Falco
Rainbow wig craziness!
1:19 - Uh, what did he say?!
2:14 - Squawk like a bird madness!
2:34 - Did she need to refer to her music sheet for her part of the song. I mean, all she sings is "Amadeus Amadeus Amadeus... and so on."
:D

Gemini Cricket 07-21-2008 10:06 PM

Here are a couple I love:

(Keep Feeling) Fascination
What's interesting is the opening shot. This was before computers. The building was completely covered. Cool.

Cowboys, Whipped Cream and that Crossed-Eyes Chick

A Disco Ball, an Eye Patch and a Weave
As campy as this song is, he can sing. I saw him live and he can still belt out this song.

CoasterMatt 07-21-2008 10:19 PM

One of my all time favorite songs (and occasional anthem) - Dare To Be Stupid

CoasterMatt 07-21-2008 10:25 PM

Here's a video that kickstarted many boys journey to manhood :D

She's A Beauty by The Tubes - God Bless Fee Waybill!

Gemini Cricket 07-21-2008 10:40 PM

Coolest Waitress Ever!

Another Waitress Video
I love the street chick dance rebellion towards the end.
:D

And speaking of dancing in the streets...
Shimmy to Show Your Contempt for the Man!

Not Afraid 07-21-2008 11:32 PM

I used to wait up for this one to appear on MTV........almost 3 years after I first heard the song!

"Got whisky" (oooooohhh, it's "new skank")
and what's "so reet"?

Life was so much harder then. We even had to get up to change channels and stand my the phone to talk on it.

Boy Siouxsie was my fashion hero, but even back then the lyrics often made me cringe:

slanted eyes meet a new sunrise
a race of bodies small in size
chicken chow mein and chop suey
Hong Kong Garden takeaway...

Ack!
Honestly...the Cure didn't age too well either.

And I never got the overalls w/o shirts fad. Ever. AND I hated that song!

BDBopper 07-22-2008 07:45 AM

When I was really young This was my favorite video

A few years later This animated video from Paula Abdul caught my fancy.

I don't remember this video but the song rocks!

One more for this round. I was too young to remember this video as well, but again it is a favorite song of mine. Whenever I hear this song I live vicariously and imagine I had a gal who says the same things to me and loves me the same way.

Don't have time to watch them all but OMG...I remember this one! I seriously remember feeling confused and kind of frightened by this video...yet couldn't tear my eyes away. Hooray, unsupervised TV! :D

Kevy Baby 07-22-2008 08:13 AM

I think my favorite video vixen was bucking bronc girl at the 1:43 mark (and his reaction!)

Mousey Girl 07-22-2008 01:41 PM

Ok, I just reinserted my earworm. For some reason (I blame The Boy) I have had Weird Al's Yoda song stuck in my head. It is back.

CoasterMatt 07-22-2008 09:38 PM

Runaway - Bon Jovi - I think Jon Bon Jovi's hairspray caused the hole in the ozone...

CoasterMatt 07-22-2008 09:55 PM

Little Girls - Oingo Boingo - One of my favorite videos of the 80s.

Not Afraid 07-22-2008 10:43 PM

God. I forgot how much I loved Magazine.

ETA -- so this is not just another blind YT post, I'll touch on WHY: the driving bass line. I've always been a sucker for that. I remember the first time I heard Shriekback... I swear my body did a swirly, sparkly, squeeeee ...way back before we knew such words. Hmmm...must now search for Shriekback. Ahhhhhhhhh. :-) Note: not really a video, just the amazing SONG. I should also add that Shriekback is the only band that ever got me dancing on a table-top. *proud* They are also the only band that would dare name a song "My Hubris." :D

And Urgh makes me remember Klaus Nomi. This song makes me happy and sad at the same time.

Kevy Baby 07-23-2008 03:27 PM

I was always a fan of MJ's Smooth Criminal video. Although when playing the full length version (with about 1-1/2 minutes of no music as the bridge) was kinda tricky at the club. I had to mix in the dub version using vinyl (remember vinyl?) during the dead-time (starting around the 5:26 mark) and then do a slam-mix coming out.

Also, Janet Jackson's Miss You Much video with the chair dance at the end (at the 4:20 mark).

For those of you who think of the '80s as bustiers and too much product in the hair, there was another side and my God it was so chic

Gemini Cricket 07-23-2008 06:26 PM

Channel J

Jeans, Sabato Jr and a huge half tab of Aspirin
By far, my favorite Janet song and video. I often call this one my theme song. Someone I was dating once said, "Hey, this is our song!" And I said, "Uh uh, honey, this is my song."

The difference between Michael and Janet? Michael grabs his own package, Janet grabs other guys' packages.
Best dancing ever!

Really big Janet hair, Wilona and that booty on a swing.
Now I'm all grown up!

My Dad, for an unknown reason, used to tape random videos on MTV. I've got all the tapes to watch when I get nostalgic. Plus he was crap at taping so you get some VJ's and commercials as well.

I used to have a big ole crush on Martha Quinn.

CoasterMatt 07-23-2008 09:23 PM

Here's a song that brings back horrific memories (a DJ at Cedar Point played this OVER and OVER one visit) -

Boys Don't Cry - "I Wanna Be A Cowboy"

I don't think that Shock The Monkey has aged at all. It's still very cinematic, spooky, and a great song.

I never get tired of Once In A Lifetime.

It's You, Only You is the best video Lene Lovich ever made, and I just love watching her play Zorro.

I was just showing Tori tonight the gorgeousness that was Micheal- here's one of my favorite INXS songs: Kiss the Dirt (Falling Down the Mountain)

I was lucky enough to get to hang out with them in Denver during the Kick tour- still have my backstage pass! Nice group of guys, and a couple of them were really good skateboarders. Drove their manager nuts all day flying down the ramps at Fiddlers Green Amphitheater- I thought he was going to have a breakdown.

Welcome to my Jr. High Dance!

I pay the price to control the dice

It's driving me out of my mind...

while your feet are stompin'

Slow dances:

but now you're runnin' away with my heart...

all you have to do is close your eyes and just reach out your hand...

I can see your love restrained...

One for the gothy kid in all of us

One for the gay guy in all of us

Hands in the air! OOOOOooooooooOOOOOOoooooooOOOOOOOO!
