Earthquake

Zoinks!

Irvine to Newbury Park at least.

Now excuse me while I go freak out.

Kevy Baby 07-29-2008 11:44 AM

Dang, ya beat me to it. Felt pretty strong here in Costa Mesa.

DreadPirateRoberts 07-29-2008 11:45 AM

Our building is still rocking.

SzczerbiakManiac 07-29-2008 11:45 AM

Wow, you guys are fast! We just felt it 60 seconds ago.

Gemini Cricket 07-29-2008 11:46 AM

5.6

Motorboat Cruiser 07-29-2008 11:47 AM

Yeah, mods feel free to merge or delete my thread.

They are saying Chino Hills was the epicenter. Felt all the way in Vegas.

Neither of our cell phones are working. Hopefully it is just an abundance of traffic.

DreadPirateRoberts 07-29-2008 11:49 AM

That one rolled like the Sylmar quake in '71

Gemini Cricket 07-29-2008 11:50 AM

5.8

Kevy Baby 07-29-2008 11:50 AM

Susan can't get through to our friends in Chino Hills or Chino so she is going to go check on them.

Crazybirdman 07-29-2008 11:51 AM

did anyone panic? I'd say, like 4 people at my office freaked out. Mostly the people too young to remember Northridge. Damn, am I that old?

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 07-29-2008 11:51 AM

Land surf's up! I thought it was a rolling good time.

lizziebith 07-29-2008 11:51 AM

Felt pretty rockin' in Studio City! Biggest one hubby's felt to date...

Moonliner 07-29-2008 11:51 AM

Ahhh, I have my USGS notification level set for 6.0. So no notification for me.

Am I allowed to send hopes that everyone is alright or will that just get me ridiculed for a 5.6?

Yeah, I was living in Northridge then and it was certainly more violent. Plenty o' aftershocks, too. This felt pretty mild, though I certainly hope no one was injured and life at the epicenter may have been a bit scarier.

libraryvixen 07-29-2008 11:52 AM

Yikes all! The earthquake was a Breaking News story on cnn.com. I hope everyone's okay!

We'll give you this one.

Snowflake 07-29-2008 11:53 AM

Didn't feel a thing. ;)

Hope everyone gets through with little or better, no damage and it's only the cell phones that are jammed.

Moonliner 07-29-2008 11:53 AM

It made a banner headline on CNN.com

They must be monitoring Lot.

MouseWife 07-29-2008 11:53 AM

I am almost to the Tijuana border~I was rolling around in my computer chair. I guess that is what rolling is? Usually I hear the patio doors shake and scare the scrap out of us.

Wow.

So...I just got home from L.A., is this the second one? Should I be freaking otu? Should I let my son go to school? :D I'm sure he'd love to stay home. :D

But I'll take him. {he doesn't go in for a bit...}

BarTopDancer 07-29-2008 11:54 AM

My cell is down too.

alphabassettgrrl 07-29-2008 11:55 AM

Felt it in Camarillo for probably... at least 30 seconds. My chair bounced a little, then I could see things wobbling, and the walls moved. But my house has survived quakes before, and I felt reasonably certain it would survive this one as well, and we have. The shaking was pretty gentle by the time it got here. I'm surprised at how fast y'all are at posting. :)

Less violent than the Northridge, for me. I remember that one. But I refuse to say that makes me old. :)

Weird, Perhaps it was really a nuclear device and the EMP got the cell system. Do you see any odd shaped clouds in the distance?

I'm still freaking out a bit. My building shook HARD. Some things in the bedroom even crashed to the floor. My monitor is only still standing, because I grabbed ahold of it. And, they evacuated Target where my honey works.

I've only lived here for 9 years, so I only remember feeling a tad of shaking from Northridge when I was living in Vegas.

This is the worst one I've felt in the last 9 years I've lived here.

This is me ->

If anyone wants to plug the coordinates into Google Earth: 33° 57.5’ N, 117° 45.1’ W

Which puts it at about 10 miles from our house

Motorboat Cruiser 07-29-2008 12:01 PM

KABC is showing Disneyland right now. All rides have been evacuated.

Capt Jack 07-29-2008 12:03 PM

yeah, it was pretty queez inducing where I am as well. I guessed right on the magnitude and depth and distance from epicenter, wrong on the direction though. /shrug

kinda sad when youve been through enough of them to call em that close.

My friend was walking in Irvine and didn't feel it. But he's weird.

My cell works now, and Blackberry messenger never went down.

I am going to the Park today.....should be an interesting day at work!

Isaac 07-29-2008 12:20 PM

I was sitting in my car, waiting for the light to change and I sorta felt my car being pushed forwards and backwards. I wasn't sure why that was. Then I got to El Pollo Loco and everyone said their cell phones weren't working. So I get back to Wachovia and my dad is telling me that we just had an earthquake.

Eeh, I'm not too impressed with what I felt.
Earthquakes are like sex; don't settle for less than a 6 ;)

Disneyphile 07-29-2008 12:20 PM

Ken just came home for a few minutes. Target is evac'd until they clean up - lots of stuff is apparently on the floor. So, he'll be spending the next hour or so re-stacking the tampon boxes and vitamin bottles.

He says that the store shook hard too, so Garden Grove must be in a primo location for this one. Ugh.

From what we have found so far, we've lost the first Christmas present I gave to Ken - a ceramic eagle. And, some vintage collectibles took a spill inside one of the living room cabinets. It appears my 1960's Donald lost a foot.

Oy. I've been needing to dust anyway, so I suppose today's a good day. I hope nothing else is broken.

It's weird - the cats were making a mad scramble across the floor just prior to the initial shaking. I thought they were just chasing each other like they usually do. They made a mad dash for under the bed. Now, I'll probably freak whenever I hear claws scrambling.

Some "fun" things though - when I was standing in my office doorway, I was amused to see our Tiki dining room "come to life" - all the birds were swinging. Oh, and other amusing things - our cuckoo clock started itself up (we usually keep it off), and the Roomba just kept vacuuming the whole time, without a care in the world. If the roof had come down, at least the floor would have been clean!

Gemini Cricket 07-29-2008 12:22 PM

DP ~ Yikes.

Cadaverous Pallor 07-29-2008 12:24 PM

I was in my cube, no one else in the office. A coworker from another division walks in to talk to me.

"We're getting lunch together today, right?"

"Yup, at noon."

"I thought so."

*rumble rumble*

"What should we do?"

*RUMBLE* *both scramble under desks*

"Maybe we should skip lunch today?"

"Yeah, good idea."

Both of us raced home to make sure our respective pets and homes were ok. Bunnies are fine, thank goodness.

Before I left I checked the library and it looked like no one was really freaking out. A lot of pale faces with survival smiles and children clutching parents. Not a single book fell in our sorting room.

Kevy Baby 07-29-2008 12:27 PM

Been downgraded to a 5.4.

Gemini Cricket 07-29-2008 12:29 PM

I wonder how many people in L.A. broke things on purpose and are blaming the earthquake for it.

"I'm sorry, Honey. I don't know how all of your Precious Moments dolls broke... Must have been the earthquake!"

Mousey Girl 07-29-2008 12:32 PM

Kevy Baby 07-29-2008 12:39 PM

Our friends in Chino Hills and Chino are OK. We were actually closer to the epicenter than the friend in Chino.

I guess there is a LOT of cleaning up to do at our house (more than usual) and a couple of things broke.

Looking at YOU, ceramic eagle.

innerSpaceman 07-29-2008 12:53 PM

I enjoy quaking in an office building. They're designed to roll with the punches, so it's like a ride at a Carnival. Only no evacuation afterwards.

Much better than sitting in a car, or being outdoors. Office buildings are designed to roll with it, so they are da bomb for quake fun!

My condo, on the other hand, is designed to crumble to dust. I'm not looking forward to what I'll find when I get home this evening.

Betty 07-29-2008 12:59 PM

Knocked out our phones briefly at the office and gave us all a little excitement here in Perris. Wonder what the house is like back in Corona... hopefully no damage. A friend in Corona says they had a few things fall and break.

Gn2Dlnd 07-29-2008 01:05 PM

Of course, I was just out of the shower. Mirrors, glass shower door, etc. Lots of rumbly in the floor, which I thought was a big truck, then the place started moving. Pretty good shaking, no sharp bumps. I heard a few things falling over, but I can't seem to find what they were.

Newscasters: While I appreciate your efforts to gather information, and I appreciate you making said efforts, I despise your use of the word "efforting" as if it's actual English. Of course, calling the newsroom just gets you a busy signal.

It's always comforting when Kate Hutton, or as I like to call her, the "earthquake lesbian" from USGS, finally comes on TV to tell us we're ok. I heart the earthquake lesbian.

It sounded at first like someone in our office had taken off running upstairs, then everything got all wobbly. Part of me is really glad I was standing outside of our test lab where I would have been surrounded by endless tons of heavy equipment perilously mounted in tall narrow cabinets. Part of me wishes I'd have seen that show, although nothing seems to have budged at all.

Long after I could feel any more movement, I could see a minivan in the parking lot still swaying.

At least I think that's why it was swaying.

BarTopDancer 07-29-2008 01:27 PM

Video simulation - pretty cool

lashbear 07-29-2008 01:34 PM

BTW: I was asleep and didn't feel it at all.

BDBopper 07-29-2008 01:36 PM

Wow. Glad to hear that everyone is okay. I got a text from a friend in Newport Beach and my heart began to race. As with Moonliner my heart is definitely in Calfiornia with y'all out there. I got really worried for a few minutes there.

JWBear 07-29-2008 01:53 PM

Wow! Finally got a chance to post.

My office is also in garden grove. We had very strong shaking. I was surprised when I heard it was only a 5.something!

Not too much damage on the first floor, where I am. But the second and third are a mess! Overturned file cabinets, stuff thrown from shelves, people trapped in their offices by overturned furniture, and one fatality... a fish.

They evacuated our building. After a roll call, we were released to go to lunch about 12:15. When I got back, the building was open again.

Bill is ok. He said that it was just a gentle swaying motion at home in LB. The white trash neighbors are all freaked out. Their first.

My mom is in Anaheim Hills. She’s ok. She had just left her apartment. She was in the hallway when it hit. She said she just bounced from wall to wall until it stopped, and then, went to play Mah Jong with her friends (that’s where she was headed).

My sister who lives in Placentia said her house is a disaster.

flippyshark 07-29-2008 02:03 PM

Has anyone heard from NA or Euro? I presume everything is all right, but I wanted to check on the beasties, pug, feline or otherwise.

You had to go all the way back to 1969 to find something?!? Pansy!

RStar 07-29-2008 02:42 PM

I was in Albertson's at the time.

I was checking out at the front of the store and I looked over at the shelves and saw them shake violently and merchandise fly off onto the floor. Reminded me of the videos of earthquakes in Japan.

The checker dropped my food and ran for the exit with evryone else in the store. For about one minute I was alll alone in the store, thinking "it's only an earthquake". So I figured I'd best head outside as well. A dozen people tried, but failed, to make calls on their cell phones. After about 5 minutes the building was still standing so the manager let us back in to complete our transactions. But he closed the store while they got the merch up off the floor.

So much fun, and it only cost me $135!

My friend's mom was at Von's and several kids beach buckets (with shovels) fell on her head. She laughed about it so I can only assume she was uninjured.

Morrigoon 07-29-2008 03:14 PM

Here in Irvine, I thought it was in the mid-3's, so obviously not too dramatic. Some people guessed in the 4's. I guess we're on pretty solid ground. Barnum was GLAD to see me (full front teeth smile, never gotten one that big before) when I checked on the pups, but other than that, no noticeable effect. Nothing seems to have fallen (though, note to self, must check to see if precariously perched items on top of stove dropped)

I forgot to mention that our Anaheim office (where I used to work) sent everyone from the 2nd floor home because the ceiling grid came down in a few places!

JWBear 07-29-2008 06:50 PM

Here are a few of the tipped over file cabinets (there were about 30 total):

We also discovered some cracked drywall in one of the staircases:

alphabassettgrrl 07-29-2008 07:02 PM

What a mess. At least the damage is minor, right?

JWBear 07-29-2008 07:52 PM

BarTopDancer 07-29-2008 08:08 PM

Wow!

At home the only thing out of place was a speaker that was knocked off the top of my TV set. My precariously placed photos and ceramic Cheshire Cat remained in their proper place.

CoasterMatt 07-29-2008 08:23 PM

The Nuclear Muffin Test Kitchen is intact, no core breach for Atomic Cookie Blast Furnace or any other system.

The cats were pretty much scared ****less, though.

RStar 07-30-2008 08:33 AM

Wow, that is a mess! BTW, it looks like someone was scared pretty bad in that office, the first picture has two piles of what appears to be crap. :D ;)

And Matt, good work on the plasma containment field! A core breach would suck!

Ghoulish Delight 07-30-2008 08:40 AM

A stick of deodorant fell off our bathroom shelf. That was the extent of the damage at home.

GusGus 07-30-2008 09:00 AM

I'm still picking things up.

(Oh, and I need a good size aftershock so I can get to those Precious Moments;) )

Not Afraid 07-30-2008 09:14 AM

I'm sorry to hear about damage in people's homes and offices. No damage at home and all of the creatures are fine. I had just got back to a client's house after walking her new rescue German Shepherd. Thurston was with me as well. I felt the first jolt and said "Earthquake". Thurston barked once at the noise of the jolt but none of the dogs were phased as the ground just kept moving. I was impressed at how long the thing went on! I thought it must've been larger and farther away. I'm glad I was wrong.

It's a relief to have an earthquake. I get nervous when we go a while without one. The earth needs to relieve that stress.

Morrigoon 07-30-2008 09:16 AM

Earthquakes are so weird, the way they skip around. I'm shocked at the damage in some areas, because nothing even came off our shelves here.

Morrigoon 07-30-2008 09:17 AM

NA: We were definitely long due for one!

was at work and was impressed with the coordination and preparedness of established procedures. we had an earthquake drill in April and another planned in the near future. the communication was near flawless and those that were designated safety officers were calm and in control. exectutive teams made the rounds to check on all and provide any needed assistance. only minor damage, like bits of falling plaster was sustained. the building was evac'd for a short time and we returned after the all clear was given.

at home, "over the hill" from the epicenter, things were apparently rockin'. stuff knocked over, and pictures moved. looks like a portrait of Walt took a wild ride, but, it did not fall. Abe did not fare so well however.

A bronze bust of Lincoln was destroyed. the head still looks great though. so, i no longer have a bust - just a head. Gratefully, this very heavy bronze did NOT bounce back into the glass curio cabinet filled with memorabilia.

glad everyone is ok.

When I arrived home, I noticed several tins of Thinking Putty had fallen off a shelf and were strewn across my living room floor. I also noticed some of my Wally memorabilia had fallen over inside their glass-enclosed display, but fortunately nothing was broken.

JW, did a couple ladies in your office have their merkins fall off during the shaking?

Hmm... looking at the regional quake map, there seems to be quite a lot of (minor) activity all up and down the San Andreas in the last week.

... just sayin'.

Wow! That's amazing. Who knew that show was still on the air.

With hanging lights over their heads, I'm surprised people were so calm. Then again, they should have safety lines attached to them...

Judge Judy was outta there quick. Ran off to her panic room, I guess.
:D

All depends upon the ground that the area sits on. If one is on bedrock, not too much damage. If you are on landfill or a former marsh, you will see lots of damage.

For example, in the 1989 Loma Prieta quake, the Marina District incurred such severe damage because the land was pretty loose, being a lot of landfill on/near very wet areas.

Yes, the USGS has narrowed it down to there being "major quake" (6+ I think) somewhere in California sometime in the next 30 years

There is CONSTANTLY activity on the San Andreas. Its when it STOPS having activity, that's when one should worry.

Super mojo to the camera operator who made sure to capture all that instead of jumping ship. Now that is dedication! :snap:

As freaked out as I was, earthquakes also fascinate me. It's an awe-inspiring and humbling moment, realizing that we are powerless when it comes to the forces of nature. No matter how advanced our technology, nothing can compare to her power. We'll never stop the earth from shaking, the wind from blowing, the rain from pouring, etc., etc. At any given moment, we can be wiped off the face of the planet at her will.

Wasn't trying to be all spiritual or anything. Just observant about natural forces. :p
