For those of you who are still closet WoW players, see you in Northrend, suckaz!!!!! :p :D |
While I'm not a WoW player, I do understand how exciting it can be to be picked for beta testing of a product you love.
Congratulations! |
Congratulatons even though I have no idea what it is other than an online game.
|
Conga-rats, Lani!
:) |
Congrats!! I was a beta tester for a few of the Everquest expansions... it is quite exciting!! :) :)
|
Congratulations, may your social life survive :D

Ooh, I can dig it. :snap: Just remember to go to the bathroom every now and then.

Man, I remember being into WOW. I was also fortunate to know one of the GMs, so I got into the beta for Burning Crusades.
Somehow in my last two semesters, I just got really busy and then never logged in. I am still friends with many of the people I gamed with, and have been fortunate to have them be a part of my life beyond the game. Have fun in the beta, and let me know how it goes! I technically still have my 70 mage... then again... she's ALLIANCE! |
My nephews are green with envy!
|
Ive done a lot of gaming betas over the years, all the way back to the original UO beta. good times.....however, they can be an excercise in frustration and a test of ones patience.
have fun |
Day 1 report from the WoW Wrath of the Lich King expansion:
4+ hours downloading 1.88Gb (but that's OK, Alex downloaded 10Gb worth of Warhammer earlier this week) Eight separately patch downloads Finally got it running last night. I had the option to create a new starter toon or copy an existing one of mine over, so I imported Tenigma. As per the terms of service, I was required to change her name when I got into the game, so I renamed her "Tenikita" ("Nikita" is northern-sounding, and this expansion is all about the north and cold weather, and "kita" means "north" in Japanese). I also went to the barbershop and gave Tenikita a new hairdo.... undead females how get a few new hairstyles including, most notably... GNOME PIGTAILS!! So of course I had to get some. Kind of funny since you can't see it most of the time since she is in shadowform. Picked up all new talents (went up to the top tier in the Shadow tree). Went out to check out the new area and quest a bit, and chatted with people who could type in complete sentences and seemed relatively mature/sm'rt. Met one level 71 Death Knight and prodded about the class... was impressed enough to roll one. Created new Death Knight--a female orc!!! I saw a ton of blood elf DKs in the starter area (that is soooo last year), quite a few tauren DKs. I think I was the only female orc. Orc orc orc!!! Rawr!!! I love female orcs, they are sooo hawt-looking. Named her Tenixia which everyone would pronounce "tenick-siya" although the name is derived from the Chinese word "xiá" which is their chivalrous hero/heroine class (and probably pronounced "sheeya" or "shya"). Without giving anything away, OMG Death Knights ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone who plays, I would recommend rolling a DK just to try out the starter area. Well, I'm assuming the Alliance area is the same. But you know, who cares about Alliance. lol. So well thought out. So now I'm having such a blast I will probably spend most of my time playing in beta. Hahahahaha. Fun! |
I was part of the beta testing for Klondike a couple of months ago
|
Apparently Lani has noticed that I am no longer listening so you all get the benefit.
|
Congrats on your ultimate geekness! :D

what's Wow ?
|
World of Warcraft. An online role playing game aka a giant timesuck.
|
I was a beta and theater tester for another online game, but we were required to sign an agreement to not divulge our participation for two years. Is WOW different in that respect, or is the company I tested for just really paranoid?

We're not in closed beta anymore, meaning people can write about it. However a person can only play the beta version if they get a select invitation from the company, as they are restricting how many users to the server at any time. After this round is over, we will go to public beta, where anyone who has the game can download the beta to test it out. Usually by them the biggest of the bugs are already fixed. |
So, Alex is trying on Warhammer for size?
We were playing Age of Conan for a bit, but J just didn't get into it (too much like WoW, which he was totally burnt out on; I found the mechanics different enough that it made that sort of game 'new' again, but ultimately just couldn't suck myself in enough to make a lasting habit of it and will be canceling it this week)... We're primarily waiting for the ever pushed back GTA MMO. Seems like a lot of people are trying out WAR. Oh, we're going to try a game called Spore.... anyone heard of it? I can't see myself playing it for lengthy periods of time, but it looks kinda cool, too... |
I'm trying it but the initial commitment is minimal. If you pre-order it comes with a code for getting into the open beta. So it only cost me $10 at Best Buy. If I am not blown away by the beta I'll not go any farther with it.
I'm generally not a huge fan of PvP so I don't have great hopes but I'm not dismissing it out of hand. |
Between this and the D&D thread I'm reallyclose to playing something.
I think my desktop could handle it. My laptop is limping through. |

I'm still playing Lord of the Rings Online... they're still having that $199 "lifetime membership" thing which has been a really good deal for me. Also in November they're going to have the first expansion, Mines of Moria (which basically covers Moria, Lothlorien and the surrounding areas). We're the largest gay guild in the game, wooot! :D |
I recently discovered SmallWorlds. It's pretty fun so far, and still in beta.
What I like - it's not very time-consuming to do things, like decorate your house, etc. I can pop in for 10 minutes while I have some work rendering. |
Chernabog: You're the first person I know personally who has continued playing for LotR for more than a month. That failure rate kept me from even trying.
Spore sounds technologically interesting but it isn't the type of game (at least as I understand it) that appeals to me for playing. |

But all online games are like that -- a lot of people try out the first month and drop out. Or they level their toon to maximum too quickly, or they don't meet friends in the game for some reason, or they just don't like the game mechanics. I've found that since I like the storyline of the Lord of the Rings universe and have a good guild to play with, it's a fun game (also it helps that it's mostly geared to the casual player). Which isn't to say I don't get bored with it every so often either (like any game you play often). Having the $199 lifetime membership thing is perfect because it is like a disney annual pass -- you can play as much or as little as you like, or take a break, or whatever, and you don't feel like you're obligated to play a certain amount each month just to get your money's worth. Mines of Moria ("Volume II"), when it comes out in November, WILL have the entirety of Shadows of Angmar ("Volume I"). So you may want to wait till then if you'd like to try the whole thing for one price, but I don't know if the pricing will remain the same (i.e. the lifetime membership thing). |
Sorry, didn't mean to suggest you're "wrong" to like it. Just saying that I hadn't run into many who stuck with it. But they were mostly in the early wave so if it has been much improved they'd probably all moved on too soon.

It was the same way with Guild Wars (which I actually don't play anymore) during the first few months, and that game is still hugely popular and churning out the expansions. |

I prefer faction-less games with siege mechanics, so I can hate anyone I damn well choose, and if I can convince enough people to hate them I can launch war. But damn it, I don't know if I'll ever have the kind of time I once did to play this. I think it'll just take the right game to suck me in. |
