D&D game

So, I am finally giving in to my Geek side and am going to start a new D&D gaming group. :)

I am thinking about a game once a month whenever people can get together, at least for now, at my house, though venue is subject to change at whim. ;)

I know some of you are old hands at D&D and are just looking for an excuse to feed your addition. Well, this is the place for you. :D
Some of you, on the other hand, have always walked past the gaming groups saying "what the hell are those weirdos doing?" Well, if you want to find out I will be happy to teach you how to be a weirdo yourself. (ie. come play no matter your skill level.);)

So, on with the poll, pick a day, any day, and we'll see if we can get something going.

flippyshark 08-21-2008 07:20 PM

If you were in Florida, I'd be there.

frodo potter 08-21-2008 08:51 PM

My poll got eaten by VB:(

What day is good for everyone?
I have 6 options:

1. Friday Sept 5th (7-12 or 1)
2. Sat Sept 6th (afternoon/evening)
3. Sun Sept 7th (afternoon/evening)
4. Fri Sept 12th (7-12 or 1)
5. Sat Sept 13th (afternoon/evening)
6. Sun Sept 14th (afternoon/evening)

If any of these days work for you, just post in the thread, if not, but you still want to play, just post that too. :)

Sohrshah 08-21-2008 09:01 PM

I want to play, whatever, whenever, and thanks for posting to the group.

Once a month people, come on! You know you want to. Frodopotter's a good DM, I promise.

Chernabog 08-21-2008 09:07 PM

I'd like to play. Sundays are best :)

Sohrshah 08-21-2008 09:12 PM

SWEET!

What kind of characters do you like to play?

Well, if we can get our Wi-Fi configured... we could always Skype you in. :)

wendybeth 08-21-2008 09:57 PM

I added a poll, per request by Frodo. I allowed multiple choices as there may be several days that would work for participants and might make scheduling easier. Have fun- I wish I could be there to play!

JWBear 08-21-2008 10:36 PM

I haven't played in about 20 years!

Capt Jack 08-22-2008 08:12 AM

dont believe Ive ever actually played D&D in its pure form. many an online or other game based (oft times only vaguely) on D&D like setups, but never the actual dice roll, DM, summoner geek style.

sounds fun!

(yes, mostly I just posted to link that video) :D kinda far for me to go for a D&D game

BarTopDancer 08-22-2008 08:25 AM

I have my die and my character from 1996. I think I also have a MAGIC: The Gathering character around somewhere. But I also have 13 units in school, a full time job and hockey season. I can haz more time plz?

I'd love to play but I'm going to have to be completely non-committal at this point :(

Morrigoon 08-22-2008 08:29 AM

I could probably do it if it's on a weeknight

LSPoorEeyorick 08-22-2008 08:31 AM

The hubby was very into D&D in his younger days - and I've always been curious about it - we'll talk and see when might be good!

Kevy Baby 08-22-2008 09:19 AM

I'm up for some B&D.
_______________

Did anyone here ever play Magic: The Gathering? I was into it for a while, but never went too far with it. I don't seem to possess the RPG gene.

Ghoulish Delight 08-22-2008 09:24 AM

I am a recovered player. But I never really played with a group that got into the roleplaying side of it. We were pretty much pure dice rollers, mowing down monsters and racking up xp.

SzczerbiakManiac 08-22-2008 10:48 AM

What edition of D&D?
Where are you located? (city is fine, not asking you to reveal your address on a public web site :) )

Chernabog 08-22-2008 11:43 AM

Yeah I haven't played actual table D&D since like 5th grade. I've played some CRPGs since then (ok, well, maybe a couple hundred), some of which followed the D&D rules and/or were set in the various D&D universes.

I remember being a DM and everything then, coming up with campaigns, etc. But I always got annoyed because when we played, death was permanent.... which really annoyed me when building up a character. ;)

We're in Garden Grove, about 3 miles from DLR.

And, I think we're sticking to 3rd edition (it's not the brand new one that just released and kinda sucks). Ken will know more about that. I just roll dice and try to come up with fun ways to annoy the DM.

Sohrshah 08-22-2008 12:34 PM

Have you seen the original, 8-bit version?

hehehehe

Hey, it's only like 3 hours! :D

Hahah both of those versions are funny for different reasons. But I'm partial to the 8-bit version. Something to do with the fact that I've now beat Final Fantasy 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. ;)

Prudence 08-22-2008 12:56 PM

October is a definite possibility for me.

First night will mostly be spent creating characters anyway, so it'd be easy to add you in.

frodo potter 08-22-2008 07:28 PM

To answer the question about which version, we will be playing a mish-mash of 3.0, 3.5 and whatever sh*t i make up on the side.
To me it's more about the role playing than the rules so much. Therefore I am all over the place, taking ideas I like from books, other games, bathroom stalls, hobos I meet on the street, you know whatever. :D

Just chill on all the damn bugbears this time, will ya? :p Or, I just might have to come up with more silliness like last time - "While our trusty paladin tries to negotiate with the bugbear leader, I break out a deck of cards that I stole from the last tavern and deal out a game of Old Mage and invite the rest of the party to join in. Each round requires the losers to strip off one piece of armor..." ;)

The cool thing - I'm married to the DM, so he can't just kill me out of frustration and still expect to sleep in our bed that night.

Might even be two of us joining in. One experienced, one (me) not. Well, I have experience in causing chaos...

Me thinks you'll be chaotic neutral. ;)

lashbear 08-23-2008 07:58 AM

Maybe I can play by Skype? I have dice and a pewter female mage figurine... (Loved being the easy gal of the party...) just need to find the old blank character sheets and the old rulebooks...

Skype sounds real good, actually... "Oh gee, look at that, rolled a 20 again... too bad the DM can't see my dice.. Hehehehehe."

frodo potter 08-23-2008 08:43 AM

I used to play with a group where 1 member was in Texas and played by phone and you would be surprised at the number of 20s she rolled as well

BDBopper 08-23-2008 09:08 AM

My brother plays this game all the time, in fact his group plays most every week. Other than that I know absolutely nothing about the game. I am curious though.

Sohrshah 08-23-2008 01:33 PM

[quote=Capt Jack;234496 the game or the drive??[/QUOTE]

The drive is only about 3 hours, right? Plus there are lots of couches in the area.

Play by Skype? Oh, how modern! :) I think that's a fine idea! Though we'll have to have you show us your die rolling on camera, or someone will have to keep a percentage table on the number of 20s you rolls- and ones you don't...

BDBopper 08-23-2008 02:17 PM

In this modern world we live in isn't there somewhere on the Net where you can roll a die for D&D? Someone has got to have thought of that one

There are lots of die-rolling apps out there. In fact, here's one for the iPhone that I think is pretty damn nifty:
http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/0...oll-for-i.html

WotC is going to be rolling out some time in 2009 a digital platform that will enable players in remote locations to play at the same virtual D&D table. It is not an MMO! I saw it previewed at Gen Con and it looks pretty nice. It's part of D&D Insider.

There are a number of such services. Here's a place to make a classic d20 roll.

flippyshark 08-23-2008 02:52 PM

Oh, and here's a group that has quite the Skye D&D setup going.

BarTopDancer 08-23-2008 04:03 PM

Every unnecessary roll is a wasted roll.

Sohrshah 08-25-2008 03:15 PM

So what's the story with scheduling dork-time?

Disneyphile 08-25-2008 03:20 PM

I think we're looking at Sunday, the 14th from 3pm-9pm, if that will work for everyone.

Once we're set up, we'll make an email list to decide the next date and time that would be best for everyone, and always do that about 2 weeks prior to each game day.

Also, we're looking at using our large outdoor patio for this (whenever weather permits), mainly because of space reasons, but also for ambience - we can light the fire pit and candle lanterns, and even fire up the grill if we want to cook. And, if anyone gets a bit chilly, we can plug in our heat dish out there too.

Oh, SWEET! I LOVE this idea! Is [good] beer allowed?

Also, if space becomes an issue, I offer up my space, too. It's pretty open, though I only have so many seats right now.

frodo potter 08-28-2008 10:29 PM

Ok, so can I get a tentative head count for Sunday Sept 14th.

Raises her hand.

Morrigoon 08-28-2008 11:32 PM

Not knowing my schedule, I'm going to guess that I won't be able to play on the 14th, but keep me on the list for future games (perhaps the DM will be kind enough to revive and play with my old character. Minus the ability to attract pink fuzzy bunnies ;))
